IS DELIGHTED TO SPONSOR THE
AT ROYAL WINDSOR RACECOURSE
We are truly thrilled to be hosting the Berkshire Winter Million for the first time here at Royal Windsor Racecourse in partnership with Ascot Racecourse With 15 races over the two days of racing at Windsor on Friday 17th & Sunday 19th (with Ascot hosting 7 races on Saturday 18th), racegoers are guaranteed to see plenty of thrilling action from some of jump racing’s premier horses
On a personal level, I am truly honoured to have joined the Arena Racing Company (ARC) team as the new Executive Director for Royal Windsor Racecourse This is a genuine privilege to be appointed in this role at such an iconic racecourse as Royal Windsor, and two weeks after starting, the smile is yet to leave my face! The whole team at ARC have been fantastic in making me feel so welcome and the support network is a huge credit to the organization. Please do feel free to introduce yourselves to me during either raceday should you wish, I would be delighted to meet you.
I was fortunate to attend the ‘Return of Jump Racing’ meeting on December 15th as a guest, the first Jumps fixture at the racecourse for over 20 years, and was hugely impressed by the bumper crowd that attended (nearly 5000) and the wonderful atmosphere that was generated throughout the venue. Huge credit goes to our Clerk of the Course, Charlie Rees, and his grounds team, for their remarkable feat in transforming the racecourse to a brand-new jumps track, and equally to our Deputy GM, Hannah Chree, and her operations team for delivering such a well-run and engaging day, full of festive entertainment.
Looking to the racing itself, we are so excited by the level of prize money on offer with every race over the two days at Windsor having a minimum prize purse of £20,000. The feature race on Friday will be the Fitzdares Sovereign Handicap Hurdle (Race 6) offering a prize fund of £110,000 and on Sunday it is unquestionably the Fitzdares Fleur de Lys Steeple Chase (also Race 6) with a fantastic prize purse of £165,000.
On behalf of everyone at Windsor Racecourse, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all owners and trainers attending over the two days, many of whom will not have run horses over jumps before at Windsor. In addition, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our long-standing sponsors, Fitzdares, who have generously supported the Berkshire Winter Million as the principal sponsor, so a special thanks to their CEO, William Woodhams, and his team for their on-going support.
All that remains for me to add is that there is a whole range of fantastic entertainment taking place at the racecourse across the weekend, ranging from rock choirs and brass bands to birds of prey and facepainting, so we hope you all have a wonderful day out at Windsor Thank you.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
BF - Beaten Favourite
C - Course winner
D - Distance winner
CD - Course & Distance winner
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating

You will occasionally see letters after a horse’s form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at this course. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well-fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders in the racecard you can identify which horses run well at this course and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.

Majority funded by the HBLB
We are thrilled to be sponsoring the Weatherbys Racing Bank Handicap Hurdle at Windsor this afternoon, with an extremely competitive field of 12 set to line up for this three-mile contest.
Evan Williams’ Minella Missile is set for his long-waited return and makes his handicap debut from an opening mark of 138 after 429 days off the track. The seven-year-old is unbeaten in two starts over hurdles and was last seen landing Grade 2 honours in the Hyde Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. He clearly has plenty of class and is unexposed stepping up in trip.
Gwennie May Boy looked mightily progressive in the second half of last season when registering a hattrick of handicap wins and couldn’t have been more impressive when a wide-margin winner of the threemile handicap hurdle at Aintree’s Grand National Meeting. Dan Skelton’s gelding took a heavy fall at Haydock on return but posted an encouraging comeback when third at Carlisle last time.
In Excelsis Deo recorded a plethora of solid runs over fences at Cheltenham last season, including a fifth at the festival, and signed off the last campaign with a well-earned victory in the Silver Trophy at the track. He has been badly let down by his jumping in three starts since and reverts to hurdles here from a 5lb lower mark, so
he could prove dangerously handicapped on his first start over the smaller obstacles since moving to the UK. Jamie Snowden’s Git Maker also reverts to hurdles following an excellent third in the Scottish Grand National when last seen, and the nine-yearold goes supremely well when fresh.
Deep Cave held some smart form as a novice when in Ireland in the hands of Henry De Bromhead and registered two victories in France last season. He has since switched to the Christian Williams yard this term and has caught the eye in two fifth place finishes in strong contests at Cheltenham, dropped a pound for his latest effort. Six-year-old
Jipcot scored impressively at Newbury last time on the back of wind surgery, and he could find more improvement up in trip despite an 8lb rise in the weights.
Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Push The Button is tried in first-time cheekpieces here and he probably wasn’t suited by extremely testing conditions when pulled up at Haydock last time. He beat a smart type in a Warwick novice hurdle last term and would look well-handicapped on that form; he would appreciate any drying ground over the weekend.

JIPCOT cruised into contention before readily settling matters at Newbury last time and he’s worth a chance to follow up for all that there’s some stern opposition in the shape of Minella Missile and the likeable Gwennie May Boy.
