Veterinary Care

Horse welfare is a priority at Wolverhampton. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means without a chance

HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet If you cannot produce this, your bet will not be accepted

SEVENTH RACE 8.00 ABOUT FIVE FURLONGS [5F ABT 21YDS] FOR NOVICE THREE YRS OLD AND UPWARDS

THE BETWAY NOVICE STAKES (CLASS 5) Total race value £6500 R Owners Prize Money. 1st £2774, 2nd £1386, 3rd £694, 4th £346. (Penalty Value £3510) Weights raised 1lb and paragraphs 27 to 31 of the Weights and Handicapping Code complied with where applicable. SS

RACE STATS LEADING COURSE TRAINER (16-21): D O’Meara (55 wins from 463 runners, 12%) runs PATONTHEBACK TRAINER-IN-FORM (LAST 14 DAYS): D O’Meara (4 wins from 42 runners, 10%) runs PATONTHEBACK LONGEST TRAVELLER: PATONTHEBACK trained by D O’Meara, Upper Helmsley, 155 miles. RACE SUMMARY It’s very difficult to look beyond SEIXAS, who left the form of her sole 2-y-o start a long way behind when scoring in good style on her belated reappearance over C&D at the start of the month. She is open to improvement and should go on to better things in due course. Patontheback showed ability on debut at Newcastle and, with Pollinate probably more one for handicaps later on, he is next best. 1-2-3: 1.SEIXAS (IRE) 2.PATONTHEBACK (IRE) 3.POLLINATE KEY colours

Preference is for TRUE ROMANCE, who didn’t get the rub of the green on his latest start in this sphere at Catterick in August and has since hit the crossbar over hurdles. He remains on an attractive mark. Sophosc wasn’t at his best last time, but he was just touched off by Tazaman at Kempton previously and is taken to turn the tables on that rival here and emerge as the main danger. 1-2-3: 1.TRUE ROMANCE (IRE) 2.SOPHOSC (IRE) 3.TAZAMAN KEY colours
