Veterinary Care
Horse welfare is a priority at Wolverhampton. At every meeting there are two specially qualified Equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all the horses in action. One vet is present at the start of each race and during the race follows the runners in a vehicle. Horses can be attended to in the same time as the Paramedic Teams responsible for treating injured jockeys. The second vet follows the action from the stands and coordinates the required response to any incidents. In addition, throughout the meeting a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is standard policy that in the event of a horse requiring veterinary treatment whilst on site, screens will be erected around the horse. It is designed to afford the vet and the patient some privacy. Please do not assume the worst.

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse is given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race HHHHI Good chance of being placed HHHII By no means without a chance
HHIII At least one or two hold stronger claims HIIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope IIIII Can be given little or no chance
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

This looks wide open and it may pay to side with low-mileage 5-y-o FITWOOD STAR. He made light of a 2-year absence when scoring over C&D last October and maintained his 100% record for Roger Teal when successful at Chelmsford 12 months ago. He can go well on the back of another break for his in-form yard. Hooflepuff, Bavardages and Starfighter are others to consider.

A case can be made for all of these, but SERENADING brings very solid recent form to the table and James Fanshawe’s likeable mare gets the vote. Katie’s Kitten wasn’t seen to best effect at Leicester last time and needs considering after a break, while C&D scorer Goddess of Fire and returning duo Pomelo and A’Shaari aren’t taken lightly either in an intriguing handicap.
