Evacuation Procedures
Great Yarmouth Racecourse has significantly enhanced Safety & Security measures this year to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency
As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards
The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance
Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;
Take your belongings with you. Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area
Health & Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if racegoers could observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst at Great Yarmouth Racecourse. We would also be grateful if parents could keep a close eye on children and prevent them from climbing on the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the FIRST AID room is located opposite the racecourse offices.
Horse & Jockey Welfare at Great Yarmouth
Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse
The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.greatyarmouth-racecourse.co.uk

The Shetland Grand National Flat Race
The Shetland Pony Grand National is a team of Shetland Ponies and jockeys that race all over the country and at the same time raising money for charity.
This year’s charity is the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and all the money raised will be going to cancer research and supporting the two Laboratories who are pioneering cancer research.
Bob Champion, for those who can remember, overcame cancer and then went on to win the Grand National on the great Aldaniti in 1981, which was a massive achievement.
Shortly after winning the race Bob formed the Bob Champion Cancer Trust and so far, he has raised over £17m for cancer research.
In 2023 the Shetland Pony Grand National team raised £38,000 and so far, the total amount raised for the Bob Champion Cancer Trust is in excess over £203,000.
All the jockeys who are racing today have gained one of the 10 places at the world famous The London International Horse Show which takes place next month at the Excel Arena just before Christmas.
In June last year, a team of 10 ponies and jockeys were asked to represent the UK at the world famous CHIO Aachen International Horse Show in Germany along with the Household Cavalry Musical Ride
All the Children taking part have to be 8 - 14 years old and must be less than 5ft in height and all the ponies that take part have to be registered with Shetland Pony Stud Book.
The Shetland Pony Grand National is a great introduction for the children who want to make a career in racing or become a professional or amateur jockey.
A number of professional Jockeys such as Sam Twiston-Davis, Tom and Ollie Garner, Joe Akehurst, Freddie and Jack Mitchell, Charlie Bennett, George Wood, Charlie Todd, Safie Osbourne, Freddie Keighley and Olive Nicholls have started their careers with the Shetland Pony Grand National. Our highest acclaimed jockey to date is Jim Crowley who was crowned Champion Flat Jockey in 2016.
The Jockeys who started their racing careers in the Shetland Pony Grand National have between them won over 7000 races.
Shetland Pony Grand National is open to anyone, so if you have a son or daughter aged 8-14 years old and below 5ft in height then please contact the Shetland Pony Grand National management team for further information on how to take part.
You can keep up to date with all the news, results and pictures by following the team on Instagram and Facebook - Shetland Pony Grand National or visit their website www.shetlandponygrandnational.co.uk

Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By know means our of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
HIIII Can be given little chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATING
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

MENGTIAN delivered a telling late challenge atWolverhampton last time and, given that he came from so far back, he probably won with more in hand than the margin of victory would suggest As such, a 2lb rise is easy to swallow and he is taken to provide the in-form Oisin Murphy with another winner. Kodebreaker is next on the list ahead of handicap debutante Perovskia and Alibaba, who was a solid second over C&D last time Tonal has a bit to prove back on turf. 1-2-3:
