Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure – There is no formal dress code in this enclosure, however the removal of shirts is not permitted.

Evacuation Procedures

Great Yarmouth Racecourse has significantly enhanced Safety & Security measures this year to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment of the day. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency

As part of our Safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse In the event of a situation, which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions. Please take your immediate belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards

The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course itself, there will be two main options; firstly to return to your vehicles if safe to do so and leave via the main entrance

Secondly, should it not be safe to return to your vehicles, you will be requested to leave via emergency evacuation gates, onto the racecourse itself, where you will receive further instructions. It may give you peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party. The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, in the event of an emergency, remember;

Take your belongings with you. Under the directions of the stewards, proceed quickly and calmly to the safe area

Health & Safety Notice

The Racecourse would be grateful if racegoers could observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst at Great Yarmouth Racecourse. We would also be grateful if parents could keep a close eye on children and prevent them from climbing on the running rails and getting onto the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the FIRST AID room is located opposite the racecourse offices.

Horse & Jockey Welfare at Great Yarmouth

Nothing matters more to us when racing than the safety and welfare of both horse and rider. Central to that is the track itself and our groundstaff do everything in their power to provide an optimum racing surface On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse

The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.

It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. To find out more about our Equine Welfare policy, please visit our website www.greatyarmouth-racecourse.co.uk

Laptop computers are not allowed into the public areas of the racecourse, irrespective of their intended use. Notebooks, ipads and mobile phones are permitted but no device is to be used for the capture of horse racing video or for communication with anyone outside the racecourse for the purpose of or in connection with any betting. Still photography is permitted but for personal use only You will be politely asked to remove the device or leave the racecourse should you breach these conditions.

Photography

Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication without the permission of the racecourse executive

Star Ratings Explained

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:

HHHHH Selected to win the race

HHHHI Good chance of being placed.

HHHII By know means our of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

HIIII Can be given little chance.

OFFICIAL BHA RATING

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

You must be 18 or over to place a bet

You may be asked to provide proof of your age when placing a bet

THE RON AND ESTHER LEAHY MEMORIAL

STAKES

Great Yarmouth and horse racing evokes fond memories of our dad and mum. We have sponsored this race to celebrate their lives.

Ron Leahy was born on 22nd September 1941 in Battersea, London to Dennis and Dorothy and was the youngest of four siblings. Ron’s first job was at an engineering firm in Wandsworth, he then joined the merchant navy, with a promise to see the world, on the Port New Plymouth ship of which he was extremely proud. After the merchant navy, he joined Firestone Tyres where he stayed for several years and then joined the Royal Mail in Putney where he remained for over 25 years until he retired. Ron loved horse racing, and a bet, he would pour over the form of the horses, jockeys, and trainers each day, all to put on a 5p each way accumulator Ron died on Christmas day 2023 after emphysema got the better of him.

Esther Leahy was born on 30th November 1937 in Stepney, London to Esther and William Mills and was the third of five siblings. Esther’s first job was in dressmaking, following her mum and sister Betty. She spent several years as a pattern cutter for the fashion house Frank Usher Esther stayed at home whilst Rachel and Bill were at school thereafter, she worked as a retail assistant in fashion until she retired. Esther loved a chat, a laugh, a dance and a day at the races. Esther died on 16 December 2022 after COPD and lung fibrosis took its toll.

Our mum and dad were loving and devoted parents, grandparents and great-grand parents. They had been married for 57 years. We thank them for making us what we are today. Their spirits and love live on in our thoughts and hearts every day.

We hope you enjoy the race in their memory.
