Full-time higher and further education courses In 2012/13 we are offering our widest ever range of full-time courses - from Administration, Information Technology , Land-Based Skills and Travel and Tourism to Construction and Engineering, Childcare and Hairdressing. In the next section of this prospectus you will find a brief outline of each of our full-time and short fulltime courses and details of which centres will be offering each course. It is possible that if there is suitable demand, courses may run in additional centres to those indicated. If you are interested in a particular course which is not listed for your local centre please contact your centre to discuss your options. You’ll find a list of contact numbers for each centre manager at the back of this prospectus.
Part-time, open learning and evening courses We will have a wide selection of part-time, open learning and evening courses available across our centres from August 2012. Contact your local centre to get details of exactly which courses will be available in your area. All courses will run subject to suitable student numbers being achieved.
What will it cost to study my chosen course
Fees will vary from course to course. Staff at your local centre will be able to advise you of the exact cost of the course you have chosen. Details are also available on our website www.argyllcollege.ac.uk Our full-time courses may be eligible for bursary funding – please ask for details. Many of our courses are eligible for a Skills Development Scotland Individual Learning Account and SAAS funding. Depending upon your individual circumstances you may well be able to apply for one of these non-repayable learning awards. Similarly a range of fee waivers may be applicable for many of our courses depending upon your circumstances – simply ask your local centre for details.
Commercial Courses At Argyll College UHI we offer a portfolio of over 40 commercial courses. These courses cover areas including basic and advanced food hygiene, first aid, conflict management, manual handling and reception skills. Care Towards a Career in Childcare This course is suitable for both school leavers and more mature students wishing to return to learning or looking to change career direction. The course is designed to equip you with the basic theoretical and practical skills required for progression towards a career in the childcare industry. The course will be very practical in nature and will provide students with placements which will allow them to gain hands-on experience in the workplace.

SVQ 3 Children’s Care Learning and Development A course designed for those students who wish to continue to develop their skills enabling them to work more knowledgeably with children from 0-16 years of age at Practitioner level. The course will be very practical in nature and students will spend three days each week in placements which will allow them to gain hands-on experience in the workplace. You will also be able to study four additional units in areas which interest you specifically. These will include: promoting health and physical development in children, early intervention for the benefit of both children and families, leadership qualities, developing a childminding business, supporting children who have experienced trauma and supporting parents with numeracy, literacy and language needs.
NC Early Education and Childcare This course will equip the student with the basic theoretical and practical skills required for progression within the childcare industry. The course will provide students with 60 days in placement which will allow them to gain hands-on experience in the workplace and underpin theoretical learning. The course aims to: • • • • • •
Provide an insight into the many factors affecting a child’s health and development Increase awareness of the importance of a holistic approach to health Improve understanding of effective early education and childcare provision Increase awareness of cultural diversity within society Develop awareness of the range of professional agencies involved in the development and health of children up to the age of 12 and their individual roles Develop the student’s core skills in communication, numeracy and information technology

HNC Early Education and Childcare This course has been designed for students who wish to follow a career in childcare or education – at Practitioner level – or wish to progress to degree level study in Teacher Training, Social Work, Child and Youth Studies or a similar discipline. The course contains a strong practical element which will encourage students to develop competence in the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding needed to perform effectively in the workplace. The HNC Early Education and Childcare will provide students with an understanding of the values and principles underlying early education and childcare and will look to develop the skills appropriate for working with a range of service users in early education and childcare settings. The course will enable students to integrate knowledge, theory and practice effectively in a wide variety of workplace settings and will allow the student to understand and appreciate how the National Care Standards and SSSC Codes of Practice should be reflected in and underpin their own practice.

NC Child Health and Social Care A nationally recognised course, the NC Child Health and Social Care will encourage students to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding required to embark upon a career within the Childcare, Health Care or Social Care sectors. The course will actively improve the students’ employability skills and will develop a strong theoretical basis on which to establish good practice. Students will attend college three days per week with the remaining two days spent in a work experience placement. Students will study a range of mandatory units in addition to a selection of optional units in both Child and Social Care

SVQ 3 Youth Work This course has been designed to provide the opportunity to obtain a recognised qualification in Youth Work for those students who are either currently working or wishing to work with young people in a community setting. The course is suitable for those students who wish to work directly in front line services but also develop leadership responsibilities.
Students will study 5 mandatory units and 3 optional units and will spend 3 days per week in work placement developing a practical experience for their theoretical learning.

Beauty, Care and Make-up SVQ 2 Hairdressing This course will introduce the basic practical skills required to work in a commercial hairdressing salon. NCGA Beauty Care and Make-Up A course with a highly practical focus which will allow students to learn and develop their skills in a realistic client based work environment. The course will equip students with the knowledge, understanding and skills required either for further study within Beauty Care and Make-Up or to attain employment within the sector at a junior level.

Creative Industries NC Sound Production You may be a school leaver looking to study for a future career, you could already be working within the music and audio industry but looking to improve your skill or you may be a more mature student wishing to change career direction and return to study. This course will help you develop your skills and gain confidence and practical experience in a broad range of practical recording tasks. You will also be given the opportunity to explore some of the very diverse sound production requirements which exist within the music and audio industry in areas including recorded music, TV, radio and film. The course will introduce areas including: • • • • •

HNC Sound Production Using the latest industry standard Pro Tools software and a combination of digital and analogue recording equipment, this course will give you the opportunity to develop technical proficiency and acquire industry recognised skills and knowledge. If you are interested in studio based sound production, working in the live sound environment or in the commercial areas of film, animation and computer games this may well be the right course for you.

NPA Dance This National Progression Award (NPA) in Dance is an introductory qualification allowing candidates to explore choreography and gain an in depth understanding of dance skills and techniques. Students will also research and analyse different dance styles and practitioners. Students will need to successfully complete 3 units to achieve the award. There is one mandatory unit - Dance: Choreography - enabling students to develop choreographic skills, create movement, use stimuli and analyse a professionally choreographed dance piece. The skills they acquire will be given a practical application through tutor-led tasks and workshops.

Catering and Hospitality SVQ 1 Food Preparation and Cookery If you would like to learn the basic skills of food preparation and cooking and ready yourself for a career in hospitality at sous chef level or similar then you should consider this course. The course will be very practical in nature and will allow students many opportunities to practice and develop their skills. Two days each week will be theory based within college with the remaining three days spent working in a professional kitchen. The course will introduce the following required areas: • • •
Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment Work effectively as part of a hospitality team Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food
You will also be required to complete four additional units from a list of 14 which will include: prepare vegetables, prepare hot and cold sandwiches, package food for delivery, prepare and cook fish and meat, cook and finish simple bread and dough products and prepare and finish simple salad and fruit dishes. You will be able to choose those areas which interest you specifically.
Entry Requirements No previous experience or qualifications are required. Entry is at the discretion of the centre following interview.
SVQ 2 Professional Cookery The SVQ 2 Professional Cookery will build upon the basic food preparation and cooking skills you have already acquired to create a thorough and more advanced working knowledge of the professional cookery environment. The course will be very practical in nature and will allow students many opportunities to practice and develop their skills. Two days each week will be theory based within college with the remaining three days spent working in a professional kitchen. The course will introduce the following required areas: • Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment • Work effectively as part of a hospitality team • Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food • Maintain, handle and clean knives You will also be required to complete ten additional units from a list of 24 which will include: prepare vegetables dishes, prepare game, prepare and cook basic soups, make basic stock, liaise with care team to ensure that individual nutritional needs are met, prepare and cook basic cakes and biscuits.

You will also be required to complete four additional units from a list which will include: prepare shellfish for complex dishes, cook and finish complex game dishes, prepare and cook fresh pasta dishes, prepare and cook complex pastry products and prepare and process complex chocolate products. You will be able to choose those areas which interest you specifically.
SVQ 1 Hospitality Services Designed to allow the student to achieve a professionally recognised qualification, this course will introduce the basic skills and knowledge needed to gain an entrylevel position within a hospitality organisation. Each week, students will spend time both in college and in a professional hospitality environment allowing them to gain practical experience to support theoretical learning. The course will introduce three required areas: • • •
Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment Work effectively as part of a hospitality team Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food

SVQ 2 Hospitality Services This course will build upon the skills achieved at SVQ 1 Hospitality Services and develop a highly practical experience portfolio which will ready students for a variety of positions within the Hospitality environment.

Students will spend around one and a half days each week in College studying the many and varied skills required within the Hospitality industry and two days each week in placement developing and perfecting these skills in practice. Students will continue to study within the required areas of maintaining a safe, hygienic and secure working environment, working effectively as part of a hospitality team and maintaining food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food. In addition students will consider the importance of giving customers a positive impression of both themselves and their organisation.
