Argyll College UHI At Argyll College UHI we apply state-of-the-art information technologies – including high-speed internet access and video conferencing facilities – to allow as many students as possible to study throughout Argyll’s dispersed communities. What’s more, as one of the 13 colleges and research institutions that make up the University of the Highlands and Islands, we can now offer our students even better access to a wide choice of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. This is in addition to our existing, prolific range of vocational, full and part-time further education courses. Argyll College UHI has 13 centres throughout the Argyll region and you can also look at studying many courses at home if you wish. You choose what you study and how you study it.
Undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses In 2011 we are able to offer you access to our widest ever range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses including, Scottish History, Sustainable Rural Development, Archaeology and Child and Youth Studies. Full-time higher and further education courses For the academic year 2011/2012, we are able to offer a wide ranging selection of full-time courses. In this Prospectus, you will find a brief outline of each of these courses and an indication of which local centres will be able to offer individual courses.
Part-time, open learning and evening courses From August 2011, we are able to offer a wide selection of part-time, open learning and evening courses. In this Prospectus you will find a table outlining the courses we are proposing to offer at each of our local centres. All courses will run subject to suitable student numbers being achieved.
What will it cost to study my chosen course? Fees will vary from course to course. Staff at your local centre will be able to advise you of the exact cost of the course you have chosen. Details are also available on our website www.argyllcollege.ac.uk Our full-time courses may be eligible for bursary funding – please ask for details. Many of our courses are eligible for ILA and SAAS funding. Depending upon your individual circumstances you may well be able to apply for these non-repayable learning awards. Similarly a range of fee waivers may be applicable for many of our courses depending upon your circumstances – simply ask your local centre for details.
Commercial Courses At Argyll College UHI we offer a portfolio of over 40 commercial courses. These courses cover areas including basic and advanced food hygiene, first aid, conflict management, manual handling and reception skills. Full-Time Higher and Further Education Courses HNC Early Education and Childcare Available: Campbeltown, Oban, Islay studied over one year A course designed for students who are looking to follow a career in childcare or wish to progress to degree level study in areas such as teacher training, social work or child and youth studies. The Course involves a high degree of placement in the workplace which will help the student develop and apply knowledge, understanding and practical skills. NC Early Education and Childcare
Available: Campbeltown, Dunoon, Islay, Oban studied over one year A course aimed at school leavers, older students looking to return to education and those in employment in the early education and childcare arena who wish to study more formally to enhance their skills. The course will look at areas such as child health and development, the impact of cultural diversity and effective early education and childcare provision. The development of practical skills is a key element of this course.
SVQ2 and SVQ3 Children’s Care, Learning and Development
Available: Campbeltown, Dunoon, Lochgilphead, Oban, Rothesay each studied over one year These courses are both heavily vocational, providing students with the knowledge and skills required to work with children from 0-16 years old in a variety of settings. After successfully completing the course, SVQ2 students will be qualified to nursery assistant level. Those students studying at SVQ3 level will, upon completion of the course, be able to register with the Scottish Social Services Council at ‘Practitioner’ level.
Towards a Career in Childcare Available: Campbeltown, Dunoon, Lochgilphead, Oban, Rothesay studied over one year This course is an entry level course. It provides the basic theoretical knowledge needed to allow students to study at SVQ2 or NC level. There is a large element of work experience built into the course which allows students to develop practical skills and knowledge from the outset. SVQ2 and SVQ3 Hairdressing
Available: Campbeltown, Islay, Oban Dunoon and Rothesay SVQ2 only One year full-time/ two years part-time The SVQ2 course will give students a basic knowledge and first-hand experience of working in a salon. The SVQ3 course will build upon this knowledge and give students the necessary experience to qualify as hair stylists. Both courses can be undertaken either full-time or part-time (work based with release for college attendance).
Access to Construction Available: Campbeltown, Dunoon, Lochgilphead, Rothesay studied over one year This course will help you develop and improve your skills and gain confidence and practical experience in the six main crafts required by the construction industry. Candidates will have the opportunity to develop skills throughout the year for the specific trades they would like to pursue, with placements set up to allow experience within the work environment. NC Digital Media Computing
Available: All centres studied over one year Whether you are looking to improve your existing skills or working towards a formal digital media computing qualification, this course will help you gain practical experience in the many and varied areas of digital media computing. This course has been designed to allow students to study SQA recognised National Progression Awards and these can be studied on a part-time basis.
SVQ1 Preparation and Cooking SVQ2 or SVQ3 Professional Cookery (Preparation and Cooking)
Available: Oban studied over one year These are highly practical courses involving college attendance and work placement. Each of the three courses will develop your understanding and knowledge in a range of kitchen skills, teaching you how to produce simple or complex dishes, depending on your entry level. Upon successful completion you will have gained a recognised qualification, equipping you to work in a professional kitchen, as well as allowing you to progress to the next SVQ level.
NC Sound Production
Available: Oban studied over one year This highly practical course covers a range of topics to provide the fundamental knowledge for recording music and audio - including microphone placement techniques, multi-track recording, MIDI sequencing and the basics of mixing. The course will also give you an understanding of the industry and how it works.
HNC Administration and Information Technology
Available: All centres one year full-time/two years part-time This is a course suitable for both school leavers looking to study for a future in the world of Administration and the more mature student considering a change of career direction. The course is also suitable for those already working in this challenging arena and looking to improve their skills and career prospects and offers an industry recognised qualification.
NC Administration – Level 5
Available: All centres studied over one year An SQA recognised course introducing shorthand, audio, book-keeping, advanced word processing, human resources administration and event organisation skills. Successful completion of this course will allow the student to progress to HNC level study.
Introduction to Land-Based Skills
Available: Rothesay, Campbeltown, Islay, Tobermory studied over one year A practical course, aiming to give school leavers, mature students or those already in land-based employment an increasing knowledge and hands-on skills base. Land-based skills are used in a variety of workplaces from cattle, sheep and crop producing farms to forestry, vets practices and outdoor activity centres. The course is SQA accredited.
NC Travel and Tourism
Available: All centres studied October to Easter The course has been designed to introduce the basic knowledge, understanding and skills required for a range of occupations within the travel and tourism fields. The course will consider customer care (including customer service and technology), selling skills and employability skills. Other topics, including the growth and development of certain industry sectors and the impact of the industry upon people and places, will also be considered.
NC Beauty Care and Make-Up
Available: Campbeltown studied over one year The course has been designed to introduce a wide range of skill areas including customer care, selling skills, facial skincare, day and creative make-up and manicure. Students will also be able to study specific specialist areas including nail art, waxing and massage. The Course is SQA accredited.
Introduction to Horticulture
Available: Campbeltown, Dunoon, Islay, Oban, Tobermory* studied over over 19 weeks This short full-time course has been designed for those students interested in the horticultural aspects of land-based studies. It offers the opportunity to study and experience a range of horticultural garden maintenance tasks.
SVQ2 Youth Work
Available: Lochgilphead studied over one year A course designed to introduce students to the skills required to work with young people. Areas to be covered will include enabling relationships, maintaining dialogue, promoting equality of opportunity, safeguarding welfare and advocacy.
Natural Horsemanship – Equido Level 2
Available: Rothesay studied over one year A course designed to create a thorough and advanced working knowledge of the care and management of horses. Students will develop an understanding of the horse, its needs and requirements, from a natural psychological perspective.
Working in the Community
Available: Lochgilphead, Oban, Rothesay* a short full-time course This course will give students the opportunity to work together to produce a project in their local community - gaining valuable work related skills as they do so. Students who successfully complete the course will achieve three group awards and will be able to progress to SVQ2 Youth Work. * Other centres may be available on request.
