Why should I consider an SVQ1 Food Preparation and Cooking course?

Do you want to learn the basic skills of food preparation and cooking? Do you want to embark on a career in hospitality at sous chef level or similar? Do you want to work towards a recognised professional qualification which will enable you to study further at SVQ2 level and beyond? If yes, then SVQ1 Food Preparation and Cooking is the right course for you. Taught full-time, this course is designed to equip you with the skills required for an entry level position in the hospitality industry. The course will be very practical in nature and will allow students many opportunities to practice and develop their skills. Two days each week will be theory based within college with the remaining three days spent working in a professional kitchen The course will introduce the following required areas: •

Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment

Work effectively as part of a hospitality team

Maintain food safety when storing, preparing and cooking food.

You will also be required to complete four additional units from a list of 14 which will include: prepare vegetables, prepare hot and cold sandwiches, package food for delivery, prepare and cook fish and meat, cook and finish simple bread and dough products and prepare and finish simple salad and fruit dishes. You will be able to choose those areas which interest you specifically.

You do not need any specific qualifications to enrol on this course.

How can I continue to develop my food preparation and cooking skills? A natural next step for those students who wish to develop their skills further would be SVQ2 Professional Cookery.
