Where will I study?

The full-time course will be taught in our dedicated construction workshops in Dunoon, Campbeltown, Rothesay and Lochgilphead, and in the school workshop on Islay.

What qualifications do I need to enrol on this course?

Potential students require no special qualifications for this course. All students will be interviewed individually by the Course Tutor.

How can I continue to develop my construction skills?

Apprenticeships may be available within the construction industry. We also offer SVQ2/3 Carpentry and Joinery or Brickwork at our Construction Engineering and Renewables Centre in Lochgilphead.

Do you want to improve your employment prospects through a practical and thorough understanding of general construction practices? Then Construction Skills may well be the right course for you. Taught over one year, the course will help you develop and improve your skills and gain confidence and practical experience in six of the main crafts required by the construction industry.


Bricklaying: Half Brick Walling, One Brick Walling, Fundamentals of Cavity Walling, Simple Arch Construction, Simple Decorative Brickwork, Block Walling Painting & Decorating: Prepare and Paint Surfaces, Decorative Painting, Paperhanging Carpentry & Joinery: Site Joinery Skills, Bench Joinery Skills, Repair & Maintenance, Manufacture Joinery Components Plumbing: Prepare and Secure Domestic Plumbing Appliances, Install and Connect Domestic Plumbing Appliances, Hot and Cold Water Systems, Discharge Systems Plasterwork: Solid and Bench Plasterwork Skills Roof Tiling and Slating: Plain Roof Tiling, Single Lap Roof Tiling, Roof Slating
