intro. Typography can often be associated with different styles of design that have been developed over time. Projects regularly require a specific style and typography plays a large part in defining the look and feel of a design. This book explores and defines different design styles that are currently trending with its often associated typography featuring fonts and inspiration.

Prominent artists associated with minimalism include Donald Judd, John McCracken, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, Anne Truitt, and Frank Stella. It derives from the reductive aspects of Modernism and is often interpreted as a reaction against abstract expressionism. Modernism can bee seen as a bridge to post minimal art and design practices.

GEOMANIST
The design features Geomanist Light in uppercase with 200 tracking. Geomanist is a clean and modern sans-serif typeface by Atipo. It features nine styles allowing for many variations when using the typeface. The clean and simplistic appeal of Geomanist makes it perfect for use in minimalistic designs. PIER SANS
Pire Sans is featured in this design in the bold variation justifying the letters to the width. Pire Sans is a modern and structured typface designed by Mathieu Desjardins. “The idea was to create a slightly off geometric font that would look as good big or very small. One of the hottest design styles at the moment is vintage. Designers are using classic typography techniques, muted colours and dirty textures to simulate designs from centuries past. The modern vintage style has adapted from the classic times quite often featuring hand drawn elements with a rustic look on image or textured backgrounds. Vintage isn’t just trending in the Graphic Design world, it can be seen throughout website design, the fashion industry and interior design.

yonder
Yonder can be seen in the design as the sub text. It is a beautiful vintage typeface with a hand drawn effect which couples very well with script fonts. Yonder was designed by Jeremy Vessey who specializes in the vintage style of graphic design and typography. The font is available for the price of $15 on Creative Market and includes 10 numbers, Various Glyphs, 26 letters with 10 alternates that promise a hand drawn look. That’s Font Folks
“That’s Font Folks” has been featured in the design as the word “Courtesy” with the “C” as an increased font size from the rest of the word. This font was designed by Jayvee D Enaguas and it draws inspiration from the mid-30s font of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies ending screen. It works nicely as vintage script with a neatly hand drawn appeal and the addition of the texture overlay brining it to life. This font is free and available for download on the Dafont website.

“Swistblnk Monthoers” is a stunning vintage typeface designed by Swistblnk Design Std. The typeface has a neat hand drawn appeal with the vintage texture apart of the font itself. “Swistblnk Monthoers” is available for free download at Dafont. Download: dafont.com/swistblnk-monthoers.font
N AU T I C A L Nautical design refers to any style concerned with navigation, sailors, or the sea. It can feature serif, script and sans serif font classifications. The colors consist primary of blues as a representation of water as well as other beach or sailor themed colours to give the nautical appeal.

KOMODA
Komoda has been featured in this design with 120 tracking. Komoda is a display, sans serif typeface suitable for headlines, editorial and poster designs. This font can be utilized throughout multiple styles and perfectly complements the modern illustration of the anchor. Komoda was designed by Asia Ang and is a free for personal and commercial use. TRAJAN PRO / 28
The design features Trajan Pro 3 with 295 tracking. The typeface includes regular and bold font variations. Trajan was perfect for adding a sophisticated sailor appeal to the design. Trajan Pro should be installed on most computers though is also available for free download online. Trajan is an old style serif typeface designed in 1989 by Carol Twombly for Adobe. The design is based on the letterforms of capitalis monumentalis or Roman square capitals, as used for the inscription at the base of Trajan’s Column from which the typeface takes its name. Since the inscription and its writing form manifests in only one case, Trajan is an all capitals typeface. Instead, small caps are commonly used, and a more complete set of glyphs contained in Trajan Pro (a 2001 update of the original typeface) includes a lower case of small caps.

OSWALD
The Design features Oswald regular in capitals referenced to the letters (L,O,V,E). Oswald is a reworking of the classic ‘Gothic’ and ‘Grotesque’ type styles, historically most usually represented by the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century faces such as, ‘News Gothic’, ‘Alternate Gothic’, ‘Franklyn Gothic’, ‘Headline Gothic’ and many more. Oswald is designed to be used freely across the internet by web browsers on desktop computers, laptops and mobile devices. The Oswald fonts are available from Google Fonts and Font Squirrel in a variety of weights and versions. Download: fontsquirrel.com/fonts/oswald
Myriad Pro is the OpenType version of the original Myriad font family. It first shipped in 2000, as Adobe moved towards the OpenType standard. Compared to Myriad MM, it added support for Latin Extended, Greek, and Cyrillic characters, as well as oldstyle figures. Myriad Pro originally included thirty fonts in three widths and five weights each, with complementary italics. Myriad Pro Regular, Bold, Italic and Bold Italic are bundled with Adobe Reader 7 and 8. In Adobe Reader 9 and onwards, the fonts are included, but not installed in the system fonts directory. / 32
MYRIAD PRO
Myriad Pro regular with 300 Tacking was used for the text shaped in a circular motion around the inner badge. Myriad is a humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Robert Slimbach and Carol Twombly for Adobe Systems. The typeface is best known for its usage by Apple, replacing Apple Garamond as Apple’s corporate font since 2002. Myriad is easily distinguished from other sans-serif fonts due to its special “y” descender (tail) and slanting “e” cut.
Wisdom Script
Wisdom Script was designed by James T Edmondson and quickly became popular after its release in July of 2011. Beginning as part of a 50 part poster series about bad advice, Wisdom is a geometric script designed to be set on a 30 degree incline. The typeface is the perfect script for hipster designs with it’s slightly vintage but still modern appeal. N EVIS
Nevis bold has been featured in the design as the subtext with 200 kerning. Nevis is a strong, angular, sans serif typeface ideal for headings, text, buttons and everything in between. It’s assertive and bold, but manages to retain a friendly tone, and looks especially good when used in all caps.
FLAT DESIGN Flat design refers to a style of design which removes any stylistic choices that give the illusion of threedimensions (such as drop shadows, gradients, textures, or other tools that add depth) and is focused on a minimalist use of simple elements, typography and flat colors. It’s easier to quickly convey information while still looking visually appealing and approachable. Flat design owes its inspiration mainly to three styles of art, which are the International Typographic Style, Modernism and the styles emerging from Bauhaus. The International Typographic style is often considered the most substantial influence on flat design and its emergence and popularization during the 1950s and 1960s is regarded as the starting point of flat design. In 2006, Microsoft released the Zune mp3 player which contained elements of flat design. The design of the Zune was clean and simple with a focus on large
lowercase typography, silhouette style logos, and monochromatic backgrounds. Microsoft continued this style of design with the 2010 release of Windows Phone 7 which built on the flat design elements introduced with the Zune. The design was dominated by large and bright shapes accompanied by sans-serif typography and flat images. Because of the success of the Windows Phone 7 design, Microsoft released their latest operating system, Windows 8, based on Metro, with the same flat design elements. Again, the design is dominated by grid shapes, sharp edges, bright colours, and clean typography. Microsoft has since moved its current products to the Metro design language, including the Xbox 360, Microsoft Office, and the Microsoft website.In 2013, Apple released iOS 7 featuring flat UI design elements, moving away from skeuomorphic design.

MUSEO
The design features both Museo and Museo Sans in various weights and tracking. The Muso font family was designed by Jos Buivenga and works perfectly with flat design adding an interesting appeal to the text while still keeping a clean appeal. Museo is a semi-serif typeface with lucid, open forms and highly original details especially the pipe-like, bent half-serifs. Museo is great for cool-looking headlines but also very effective in mediumsized texts. Museo font family has five weights (100, 300, 500, 700, 900). 3 weights are absolutely free (300, 500, 700) and 2 are paid (100. 900).
Museo Sans is based on the previous Museo typface designed for body copy. It is a sturdy, low contrast, fairly geometrical, highly legible sans serif typeface that is very well suited for any display and text use. Museo Sans font family comes in 10 variations: 5 weights (100, 300, 500, 700, 900) with each an italic. 2 fonts are absolutely free (500, 500 italic) the remaining 8 are paid. Big John
The design features Big John as the text “Foundation� with -58 tracking. Big John is an absolutely sunning all caps, sans serif, geometric typeface designed by Ion Leucine. The typeface is perfect for headings and works well in flat design with its clean letter forms. Moon Bold has been used in the design as the red words with 200 tracking. Moon is a rounded, simplistic, typeface designed by Jack Harvatt. The typeface has both thin and bold variations, free for personal use only. Affordable commercial licenses available.
abstract
Abstract design uses a visual language of shape, form, colour and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Abstraction indicates a departure from accurate representation which can be slight, partial, or complete. In Abstract design the typography is most likely to feature unique letter forms adding visual interest. The more abstract the letter forms are the less legible it becomes. It begins to questions the boundaries of typography, how much can we change a letter before it’s not a letter? Complementing the typography is often abstract images or shapes that add to the abstract appeal.

BarOn NEUE
Baron Neue was designed by Frank Hemmekam and distributed by Fontfabric. Baron Neue is an uppercase display typeface inspired by the classic sans serif font families. It’s slightly abstract letter forms make it a unique font that draws interest to the next while still being legible. It has 6 free weights available to download from their facebook page. VO VO VO VO VO VO / 44
Delicate
Delicate is a beautiful serif typeface that challenges the boundaries of what makes a letter form by removing some of it’s structure. Delicate can be described as abstract, minimalistic and elegant typeface and is it perfect for large text and headings. The downfall of this font is that the kerning is currently not up to professional standards. The font requires a small donation and comes in one font weight. Download: font-delicate.com

I N D I E
The term indie is short for independent, originally defined in music In terms of music that is independent of major labels/ mainstream stuff. Indie was originally a genre of music that then became a fashion trend in clothing forming it’s own style that can now be seen in design, photography and illustrations. I find it to be a more hippy and culture rich version of hipster. The indie style often features elements of American Indian culture, nature, animals, gypsy patterns, hippie style, vintage effects and Indian patterns. The designs are very colorful and vibrant with the essence of culture. Serif typography is primarily featured in the style, often consisting of a hand drawn font or decorative lettering.
AMATIC SC
Amatic SC can be used for titling and small runs of text. It has been designed to be used freely across the Internet by web browsers on desktop computers, laptops and mobile devices. Amatic SC was designed by Vernon Adams who studied typeface design at Reading University, UK, and Fine Art at Vestlandets Kunstakademi, Norway. He is currently producing open source fonts for the Google Font Directory. The designer is also known for many other fonts such as Monoton, Niconne, Oswald and Gruppo. Amatic SC is available from Google Fonts and Font Squirrel in both normal and bold font weights. Download: fontsquirrel.com/fonts/amatic

Skinny is a raw hand drawn typeface which is perfect for that natural effect that gives the design that indie vibe. Skinny is a completely free typeface that only comes in one variation and has a limited number of glyphs. Download: dafont.com/skinny-notfon1234.font

feminine. The feminine design style refers to having qualities or appearance traditionally associated with women, especially delicacy and prettiness. Colours often induce pinks, purple and pastel colors. Some examples of feminine typography can be described as cursive, delicate, script, serif or decorative with a girly appeal.
Manhattan Darling
Manhattan Darling typeface was created as a dual-purpose font, with gritty, imperfect, handpainted characters and an irregular baseline. The uppercase portion of the typeface (Manhattan) can be used to create a bold, organic handpainted typography. The lowercase portion (Darling) is suitable for things like beautiful branding, logo designs, invitations, wedding elements and headings. The typeface is available for purchase at Creative market.
