WE DESIGN THE CITY Arkitema Architects design and construct buildings to create the best architectural environ ment for human beings. Our approach to architecture dates back to the company’s foun dation in 1969, and over the years we have built up solid experience and expertise in the architectural profession. We empathise with the location, taking into account the needs of the community – and maintain a continuous dialogue with the client, the users and our partners. In this way, the architecture grows out of the sum of the many different stake holders in the project, and through this process, we produce architectural work that is both buildable, sustainable and aesthetically pleasing. We call it People in Architecture.

FIVE SEGMENTS We work in all scales in architecture - from interiors, to construction architecture, to urban planning. But we have specialised our professional skills in five segments: Housing, Commer cial, Health, Learning and Urban Design. Together, these five segments form the foundations of the modern Scandinavian city. This is where people spend most of their time, whether at home, at work, going around the city, in the park, at school or on visits to the doctor or the hospital – this is where people live.

10

HOUSING The Scandinavian idea of the good life is inextricably linked to the residence. We Scan dinavians spend many hours in our homes. Consequently, the first consideration of Arkitema Architects Housing is always to create aesthetic, functional and safe envi ronments for all types of people. We carefully study who the individual dwelling is intended to house, and where it is to be constructed. Is it for single people, families with children, the elderly, people with special needs? We are always responsive and make sure to consult and engage in dialogue with the coming residents. We have designed and constructed countless homes – from individual dwellings to major, extensive residential projects. Always with great attention to detail, in terms of both materials and workmanship. A home must be built in good, reliable quality. We also ensure the optimal location relative to the views and the orientation of the sun, and we express our Nordic spirit through our use of materials, colours, textures and sustainable solutions: important elements that help to secure sustainable, future- proofed housing.

12 Prästgården Gustavsberg, Sweden  |  Year: 2012  |  Size: 28 residences

Prästgården lies in a peaceful location on top of a rocky area, with views of undulating mountain scenery and pine forest on all sides. The homes relate not only to the rural context, but also to the architectural tradition of the location. Inspired by the building traditions in the archipelago, timber is the predominant material used.

The homes are built on stilts, which gives them a visually light appearance, in which they seem almost to climb the mountain.

14 Åkrogen RISSKOV, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2006  |  SIZE: 18 RESIDENCES, 3,196 M²

Åkrogen represents a new interpretation of the traditional terraced house. Using conscious displacement, the facade is a dynamic structure that secures both the best possible natural light incidence and good views from all of the houses.

16 Bindesbøll Byen RISSKOV, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2014-2019 |  SIZE: 110,000 M²

As part of Bindesbøll Byen, the Forest Houses blend gently into the wooded slopes that are so characteristic of this part of Risskov.

The new urban district will grow up around the existing Bindesbøll buildings – a main construction that the new district is inspired by and gently submits to.

19 Casa Spodsbjerg SPODSBJERG, LANGELAND, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2010  |  SIZE: 240 M²

The house has a high base of in-situ cast concrete containing a garage, a cellar, a spa and a family room with a sea view and access to a sunny spot close to the shore. The living room and bedrooms are located upstairs, cantilevered out from the base.

The living room, which has a ceiling height of 3.7 m, boasts an uninterrupted view of the sea and the small beach below the house, while the bedrooms are more sheltered.

20 Scherfigsvej TUBORG HARBOUR, COPENHAGEN, Denmark YEAR: 2014-  |  SIZE: 100 RESIDENCES, TOTAL 14,830 M²

The Scherfigsvej development consists of 100 exclusive residences alongside Tuborg Harbour. The proposal introduces various housing typologies, on a scale that relates to the surrounding area. All of the homes offer good views and optimum sunlight conditions.

22 YOUTH HOUSING, AARHUS HARBOUR AARHUS, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2012  |  SIZE: 99 RESIDENCES, 5,000 M²

The tower block has a sturdy facade in smooth white high-strength concrete, with marked fields around its many and diverse windows. Most of the homes are tworoom units that obtain daylight through windows that are proportioned in different sizes and located in varying patterns.

The building is a true zero-energy building, and makes use of a new facade system in high-strength concrete that minimises the thickness of the extremely well-insulated outer walls. With a solar energy installation on the roof and solar panels as parapet sections on the balconies to the south, as well as energy-efficient windows, decentralised ventilation, heat exchange on domestic water, etc., the building’s energy account balances.

24 FREDERIK VIII’S MANSION AMALIENBORG, COPENHAGEN, Denmark |  YEAR: 2010  |  SIZE: 4,500 M²

The Great Hall. Following its renovation and modernisation, the palace will provide a modern and forward-looking setting for the private residence of the Crown Prince and Princess, with associated representative and administrative functions.

The renovation and modernisation of Frederik VIII's Mansion encompasses internal and external refurbishment, an integrated art project and a renewal of the gardens.

Arkitema Architects is one of the leading architectural practices in Scandinavia in the use of BIM (Building Information Modelling). We design all of Arkitema’s projects in BIM, and have our own BIM procedures, tools and digital platforms. BIM allows us to obtain a well- functioning overview of a building’s contents and secure optimal interdisciplinary cooper ation, as well as helping us to manage both time and finances. With BIM, a better decision- making basis can be established for the client, user groups, contractors and suppliers. BIM boosts both the quality and the productivity of the individual projects.

BIM

In 2014, New Østfold Hospital received an award from Building Smart International as the world's best open BIM project. Read more about this project on p. 87.

COMMERCIAL If Scandinavian companies are to develop and secure their market position, they must have the right architectural setting. At Arkitema Architects, we are very conscious of how physical building design can affect a company’s success – by ensuring optimum working conditions, making a good impression on clients, and attracting new employ ees. We have more than 40 years of experience in everything from designing industrial buildings, office buildings, hotels, cinemas, shopping centres and company headquar ters to refurbishing and optimising existing facilities. And our starting-point is always the needs of the client and users. We adapt the architecture to the company, and are dedicated to providing sustainability that will secure the company a comfortable indoor climate, social spaces, and both profitable and eco-friendly operations: com mercial buildings that live up to today’s requirements and are future-proofed both technically and architecturally.

31 Aarhus City Tower is a class 2015 low-energy building that integrates solar panels into the parapet sections of the entire south facade. The solar panels are elegantly integrated into the facade expression, and are produced using low material and energy consumption.

Aarhus City Tower marks the entrance to the new urban district in Aarhus. The tower is 23 storeys tall and contains a hotel with 240 rooms and conference facilities for 1,000 people, as well as office space and private residences.

Aarhus City Tower AARHUS, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2014  |  SIZE: 25,000 M², PLUS 13,000 M² PARKING FACILITY

32 Nexus CPH COPENHAGEN, Denmark |  YEAR: 2014-2018 |  SIZE: 43,000 M²

Nexus CPH will be the new administrative hub for Rail Net Denmark, the Danish Transport Authority, the Danish Road Directorate and the Danish Energy Agency. The building will be located as a visual landmark at the entrance to central Copenhagen, as one of the largest and most significant building complexes at Kalvebod Brygge West.

Across the landscape concourse, transverse linking bridges ensure optimal flow, good logistics and lively knowledge- sharing among the building’s many users.

35 HK & KL COPENHAGEN, Denmark |  YEAR: 2002 SIZE: HK 14,000 M², KL 13,000 M²

The HK and KL buildings are two office headquarters at Ny Tøjhusgrunden in Copenhagen, housing the Union of Commercial and Clerical Employees in Denmark (HK) and Local Government Denmark (KL), respectively. HK and KL are like identical twins – superficially alike, yet fundamentally different, and they reflect the structure of the two organisations. The two buildings have the same height and width, and speak broadly the same language.

36 Udbetaling Danmark HADERSLEV, DENMARK  |  YEAR: 2013  |  SIZE: 6,500 M²

There are a total of three office clusters on each of the two upper floors and one on the ground level, i.e. seven office clusters in all. On the roof, a 340 m² solar energy system has been installed which allows the building to meet the requirements of low-energy class 2015.

Sculptural stairwell.

38 Nørre Vosborg VEMB, HOLSTEBRO, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2008  |  SIZE: 1,444 M²

The new hotel wing at Nørre Vosborg matches the largest of the complex’s buildings, the large barns, in terms of volume. But despite its size and location, it does not compete with the historical buildings, and cannot be seen from the courtyard area and the main axis of the complex.

40 Restaurant Frantzén STOCKHOLM, Sweden  |  YEAR: 2014  |  SIZE: 50 M²

The basic idea of the restaurant is to combine Japanese sophistication and awareness of materials with Swedish simplicity. The materials are therefore in discreet shades, in limestone, pine, linen, leather and copper.

Restaurant Frantzén is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed restaurants, with two Michelin stars, and is ranked number 23 in the world. The intimate premises have room for 22 guests.

43 Widespace STOCKHOLM, Sweden  |  YEAR: 2013  |  SIZE: 1,050 M²

When you arrive at the Widespace IT company you enter a large welcome lounge, which constitutes the office’s centre and focal point – a space that takes up more than one-third of the office’s total area.

Architecture from Arkitema Architects is all about optimising people’s daily lives. By incor porating both passive and active measures, we create good conditions for social interaction and life in general. Our starting-point is always with passive energy factors, such as the building’s location, sunlight and wind conditions. We combine these with a good indoor climate, reduction of raw materials consumption, and the integration of the latest technol ogy, where this makes sense. At the same time, we shift the boundaries of what is possible through innovative building components. Our goal is that sustainability should be for every one – including financially.

Urban Design The towns and cities of Scandinavia are all expanding, and are challenged by growing urbanisation. The landscape department of Arkitema Architects, Urban Design, de signs cities on the basis of social, environmental and economic conditions. We create exciting and experientially rich cities that promote communities, interaction and di versity among the residents. Cities that are dense, intense and full of life. At the same time, Urban Design also works with the immediate landscape around the various pro jects of Arkitema Architects, creating landscaping that complements and extends the spaces and features of the architecture. Applying the professional breadth and insight of Urban Designs, we tackle major chal lenges such as climate change adaptation and increasing urbanisation, and we strive to minimise the time and resources spent on transport in the Scandinavian cities. Our focus is always on the individual users and citizens – we develop urban spaces with them at hand and in mind.

48 Sluseholmen SYDHAVNEN, COPENHAGEN, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2008  |  SIZE: HOUSING: 133,000 M², COMMERCIAL AND INSTITUTIONAL: 2,000 M² - TOTAL 135,000 M²

Sluseholmen consists of eight housing islands, where town houses large and small stand side by side, forming continuous blocks.

The large central courtyard areas form green oases, providing neighbourhood spaces where residents can set up common areas for relaxation and play. Here there is room for a rose garden, a swimming pool or a small private vegetable garden.

52 Nærheden HEDEHUSENE, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2014  |  SIZE: 63.5 HA.

The NærHeden urban development project provides a model for the sustainable suburb of the future, and will be a central driver in the development of the town of Hedehusene.

The recreational areas, meeting places and varied housing clusters will develop and rethink the familiar qualities of the suburb, such as proximity to the countryside, schools and social communities.

55 HAMMERSHUS VISITOR CENTRE HAMMERSHUS, BORNHOLM  |  YEAR: 2013-2016 |  SIZE: 1,355 M²

The visitor centre consists fundamentally of three components: a roof slab that can be walked on, heavy concrete walls and wooden floor surfaces. Spatially, the visi tor centre functions like a large covered terrace, with a single continuous space offering a fantastic view of the landscape, the castle ruins and the sea.

The visitor centre has a number of features distributed along its elongated plan. From the foyer, you can either walk towards the exhibition or towards the café, which continues into the school rooms.

58 BELLAHØJ SWIMMING STADIUM Brønshøj, Denmark  |  Year: 2009  |  Size: 8.145 m² plus 23.000 m² outdoor areas

The complex forms a modelled landscape which simultaneously unites and separates the urban area and the new recreational park with its open-air pool. Across the modelled landscape stretches the building's characteristic roof surface, giving the complex a distinctly horizontal expression.

Bellahøj Swimming Stadium is divided into a swimming hall with a diving pool, a 50-metre pool and a teaching pool.

63 Nya Hovås GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN | YEAR: 2012-  |  SIZE: 80,000 M² HOUSING AND 10,000 M² COMMERCIAL PROPERTY

In Nya Hovås, the city is divided into a series of open neighbourhoods with private, semi-private and public meeting-places. A city where the different housing types vary in their materials and heights, creating a good, pleasant urban environment – a sustainable city with the focus on human beings, and where you are always close to nature.

Nya Hovås consists of a brand new district with a total of six different neighbourhoods, with commercial property and various types of housing and shops at street level.

Arkitema Architects have highly experienced and skilled project management at their dis posal. Our project management provides security for the project – all the way from develop ment and design to the actual construction process. We ensure that the architectural visions are realised, the deadlines are met, and the finances are in order. We have project managers in every branch who are always available for consultation, and who can provide comprehen sive answers to questions.

LEARNING Scandinavia’s most important resource is knowledge and innovation. At Arkitema Architects, we draw, design and construct learning environments for people of all ages: from kindergartens and primary and secondary schools to colleges and universities. Our approach to a good learning environment is primarily through dialogue. We listen to what the students, teachers and academic staff have to say. We combine their needs and visions with our experience, creativity and professional skills, and thereby create future-proofed, aesthetic and well-functioning learning environments.

68 VIBEENG SCHOOL HASLEV, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2014  |  SIZE: 6,430 M²

The school is distinguished by its red exterior and by the various displacements of its roof surface, which create ridge-like motifs on the facade and spatial variation in the interior.

Vibeeng School signals children and play through its red exterior and active learning environments – both indoors and out.

71 At Trommen Cultural Centre, an existing library and music venue – Trommen – has been turned into a combined cultural centre.

The decor includes a number of characteristic pieces of round super-furniture, distributed across the ground floor and first floor.

TROMMEN CULTURAL CENTRE HØRSHOLM, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2014  |  SIZE: 3,986 M² RENOVATION, INTERIOR DECORATION AND GENERAL PLAN

72 KUA2 – UNIVERSITY OF COPENHAGEN COPENHAGEN, Denmark |  YEAR: 2013  |  SIZE: 37,000 M²

The vision for KUA2 is to create a foundation for the future development of the Humanities, with a focus on creating a dynamic study environment and a good workplace for academic staff.

The building’s ground floor is organised around a large faculty concourse, which unites a number of service functions for users, together with the faculty administration and campus operations centre.

76 NORDSTJERNE SCHOOL FREDERIKSHAVN, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2013  |  SIZE: 13,500 M²

The school is centred on a common plaza, the heart space, where all of the school’s zones meet – a learning centre, emphasised by a large, red, sculptural library staircase. This is the school's dynamo, where learning and opportunities for socialising are woven together in an inspiring environment.

In a large school, it is important to create environments on a scale that anyone can take in and relate to, and which are safe and inspiring places to be.

78 DTU – TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF DENMARK LYNGBY  |  YEAR: 2013  |  SIZE: APPROX. 2,000 M²

The Knowledge Centre in building 101 is designed around a raised plateau with a room-height info screen. This is the knowledge centre’s communications stage, where exhibitions and information continually replace one another.

Around the communications stage, a number of niches have been established in strong signal colours. The niches also form part of the total learning environment; they create spaces which can be used for relaxation or study.

Arkitema Architects are very aware that all phases of a building project consist of a variety of processes in which it is important to involve various stakeholders. We ensure that this is facilitated in the best possible way through transparent, clear and meaningful processes. For this work, we use a variety of tools and methods which in combination help to ensure that all stakeholders are consulted, and that we fulfil their dreams, visions, wishes and re quirements. Our stakeholder involvement programme combines the practice’s specialised knowledge of architecture with the experiences and needs of users.

STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT

Vibeeng School was created through comprehensive user consultation. Read more about this project on p. 68.

HEALTH One of the cornerstones of the Scandinavian welfare model is the health service. When we need care and cure, help is always at hand. At Arkitema Architects, we help to pre serve and secure the future of a modern, welcoming and healing healthcare system. Our healthcare architecture focuses on the patient, health professionals and relatives. Our designs aim to ensure an optimal framework that can help to heal – a framework for spatialities that are both functional and experientially rich. Together, functional patient rooms, good views, beautiful light and a conscious choice of materials help to ensure that all users are given the best possible experience. We believe that an effi cient and aesthetically attractive health centre can help patients to heal, and reduce hospitalisation time.

84 VEJLE HEALTH CENTRE VEJLE, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2014  |  SIZE: 18,400 M²

In up to six storeys, Vejle Health Centre rises up as a welcoming gateway to the area, consisting of two interconnecting building volumes in a figure-eight pattern that creates interaction between the public, common areas and leased areas designed for the specific needs of each tenant.

The house interweaves the various functions and ensures good visual links internally. The interior is bright, open and welcoming, and using simple techniques, it supports the various functions of the building. A large sculptural staircase in the atrium binds the house together, integrating both comfortable seating steps and a functional walking area.

87 NEW ØSTFOLD HOSPITAL SARPSBORG, NORWAY  |  YEAR: 2008-2015 |  SIZE: 120,000 M²

New Østfold Hospital brings together a number of hospitals in a single large hospital to serve the south-eastern part of Norway, as part of a strategic plan by the Norwegian government to streamline and improve the Norwegian hospital system.

88 KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET SOUTH – MAIN BUILDING HUDDINGE, SWEDEN  |  YEAR: 2002  |  SIZE: 25,000 M²

In the space between the existing building and the extension, we have established a large, bright atrium that unites the entire building, with amongst other things a café and a library.

The south-east-facing facade has black parapets of fibre cement panels and external aluminium sun screening.

91 DNV Gødstrup is one of Denmark's biggest new developments in the health sector, setting the standard for future Danish hospital construction.

As a natural extension of the landscape’s horizontal lines, DNV Gødstrup is rooted in an extended base that includes outpatient departments, diagnostic imaging, surgical departments and offices, while the wards are located above the base.

DNV Gødstrup GØDSTRUP, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2011-2016 (PHASE 1)  |  SIZE: 115,000 M²

92 VEJLE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL VEJLE, Denmark  |  YEAR: 2014-2017 |  SIZE: 17,000 M²

The green aspect of the new psychiatric hospital makes a distinctive impression: the landscape is drawn right in between the buildings and into the attractive courtyards.

Patients and visitors are received in a bright and welcoming environment.

The coming psychiatric hospital make use of a simple and functional architectural concept: it consists of eight blocks attached to a circular flow, which is where the administration, services and staff functions are located.

95 The new psychiatric centre in Skejby builds upon the planned structure, which is modelled on a city, with neighbourhoods, streets, plazas and squares.

The psychiatric centre will form part of the New University Hospital in Aarhus, and will contain an adult and a children’s psychiatric department with outpatient clinics and wards, as well as a separately located department of forensic psychiatry.

WE ARE SCANDINAVIAN Arkitema Architects was founded in Aarhus in 1969. Today, the practice is one of Scan dinavia’s biggest architectural firms, with eleven Danish partners, a Swedish partner, two Norwegian partners and a staff of 380 employees, divided between branches in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Stockholm, Malmö and Oslo: five Nordic branches that all think out, design and construct architecture on the basis of a Nordic idiom. We are therefore focused on the location, the daylight conditions and the changing seasons, and aim to create good, functional solutions in simple, robust and sensual materials. We also share our knowledge between branches and between countries, thereby securing our strong position in the field of architecture.
