Welcome to this months edition of Around Town... You will notice our theme this month is centred around the centenary of World War One. 100 years ago the people of Great Britain became part of the Great War and now we have the chance to reflect, remember, honour and celebrate the lives of everyone involved in the First World War. This month’s edition includes an article by local historian Sylvia Kent on the memories of local resident Mary Needham as she recalled the break out of WW1, a Women’s Institute WW1 inspired recipe and of course our local Reverend looks back on religion playing a part in the war commencing. Please read on and enjoy... FROM THE

BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB

If you cast your minds back to the end of June, we held our 5th Billericay Beer Festival at Billericay Town Football Club. Despite the inclement weather, the people of Billericay – plus some from Sheffield, Walsall, Edinburgh, the USA, and even Brazil – came along and had a great time over the weekend sampling our lovely real ales & ciders, catching up with friends old & new, and enjoying the music in our marquee. Our friends from Harry’s Day also entertained the families on Sunday. The numbers are still being crunched, but with your support and those of our generous sponsors we hope to have raised over £4,000 for distribution to worthy causes in the local community. So – cheers! Our first community services event of the Lionistic year was taking children who are growing up in the region of, and still affected by, the terrible Chernobyl disaster. A day at the seaside at Southend went a small, but important way to bringing some joy into their lives – and provided an excuse for our members to have an ice-cream. Our next community services event will be our annual Senior Citizens Concert at Emmanuelle Church Hall on Saturday the 20th of September. As ever we will be provided a free evening of variety and entertainment to our more chronologically gifted local residents. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.

Well, what a busy few weeks we’ve had! As most people know, Billericay Round Table is famed for its legendary annual fireworks spectacular, but that doesn’t mean we sit on our hands for the rest of the year! We regularly get a call or an email to ask if we can help provide bodies at other organisations events, and June/July proved to be no different. At the end of June we were involved with Fun In The Park at Lake Meadows, and as well as a couple of our members mending one of the old rowing boats to let people have a boat ride on the lake, and also helped with the running of the climbing wall that was brought in for the afternoon. In early July we helped support the running of the Urban Games, both with bodies to help on the day, and a some funding to help the event go ahead. The day after this event, some of our members were on hand to help out at the Summerfest event at Sun Corner! The following weekend was filled with music as we manned the gates at Thingamagig at the New White Hart, with some of our members even dressing up as characters from cult tv comedy The Mighty Boosh, so if you wondered why there was a gorilla wandering the streets, you know now! The day after this, we were off to Ingatestone to help with Y In The Park, a music event put on by the youth town council, and on this occasion, one of our team was even djing and MCing the event! It’s been fantastic getting involved with so many community events, and hopefully we’ve helped put a few smiles on some faces along the way! If you’d like to find out more about what we get up to, either visit www.billericay.roundtable.co.uk or email us at info@billericayroundtable.co.uk

Drawing comparisons as we look back through history is what we do as people on a daily basis and as the WW1 centenary date is upon us, I wanted to focus our attention on comparing on, what now, is an expected lifetime achievement or goal is… driving. Who was driving back then? The question should be who owned cars? You have to remember people were evolving from a time where horse and carriage dominated the streets and longer journeys were completed via train or boat. The invention of the car was very much a way for the upper class members of the community to sit back and relax and have a driver or employee drive them from A to B, in what was, at the time, described as a glorified horse and carriage. The working men who could afford a car would most certainly drive, however the consistent thought process was that you would know whether someone was doing well for themselves based on the very fact they had a car. Who is driving now? It has become as routine and expected as getting a job. When you hit 17 years of age, driving should be up there in the list of priorities. Also, whereas the minority of people drove during WW1, that fact has certainly flipped on its head in

2014. Over 70% of people who are eligible to drive now hold a UK licence. However, much like in the early 1900s nothing confirms status in people’s minds like a car. It’s still an attention grabber now in 2014 and whilst Henry Ford’s Model T created in 1908, has now been replaced with the latest Ford GT40, there is still that psychological assumption that the person driving the newest and most expensive car MUST be of wealth.

In addition, I’m certain there have been many Grandads and Grandmothers worrying about their newly passed grandsons and granddaughters driving irresponsibly nowadays, but considering you could buy a licence for 5 shillings (no test required) in the early 1900s must give the contemporary 17 year old the final word in that discussion! Big Business then and most certainly now Something else that hasn’t changed since the early 1900s is the goldmine that is “driving”. With the invention of more

and more reliable cars from 1890 onwards, Ford and other companies began to mass produce vehicles with ease as time went by. This resulted in more roads being built and the opportunity to transport goods became substantially easier too. All of a sudden you would become a local businessman to nationwide businessman operating with a lot more speed and efficiency. In America this aided the above board businessmen and the underground “wheeler dealers”. Infamous people such as Al Capone ceased on the ability to trade using cars touring the USA with illegal alcohol during the prohibition with trips from New York to Chicago or Philadelphia to Florida. In this respect we have not changed. Next time you are driving down the M25, I’m sure you will encounter lorry after lorry transporting foods, domestic home items, clothing and much more. In summary, circumstances are different and the logistics have changed as we have evolved here in Billericay and Britain, however some of our traits, attitudes and overall needs when it comes to our cars and driving have not changed since the days of WW1 and I don’t believe they will change for some time yet. Finance Matters by Ian Nicholson DipFA Beaulieu Wealth Management Ltd Savings….why should we? As we’re now well into the summer months, the kids are on school holidays, and our thoughts turn towards summer breaks in far flung lands, the last thought unfortunately on people’s minds are savings! However, unless you’re fortunate enough to be independently wealthy, or be lucky and win the lottery, it always makes sense to try to put money away. This should be for short, medium and long term reasons Short Term In the short term we should always try to have some easily accessible money handy for emergencies (the boiler goes, guttering needs replacing etc). This should ideally be 3x your monthly regular outgoings. This will ensure that should the worst happen you have the funds available to tie you over. It makes sense tax wise to place these type of savings in a New ISA (NISA). This as I’ve explained before is a tax free savings plan. The rules changed recently so that each individual can now place £15,000 each into a NISA. For short term savings you should place the funds into the CASH portion of the NISA. This should mean easy access. Medium Term Savings Medium term savings are for things such as future holidays, planned events (new car etc), or maybe children’s education. How much you invest is personal choice but if you have a specific goal, and that goal has a financial figure, then a Financial Adviser should be able to give you an idea as to what you should be putting away. Again investing Tax Efficiently always makes sense, and a NISA would usually make sense for these types of savings needs. The shorter term medium savings can be invested in the Cash Portion of the NISA, whilst the longer term (5+ years) can be placed in the stocks and shares element. If you’re a couple, then you’ll have £30k pa scope for these investments which

Do you know the size of your pension pot?

should be enough. Longer Savings Lastly we look at longer term savings. This generally means looking at saving for when you will be stopping working (retirement), and therefore needing income not generated by working. Personal Pension plans still offer a really good option for saving for retirement. If you’re employed you will have (or will soon) be auto enrolled into a workplace pension by your employer. Even if you have, you can still contribute to your own personal scheme in addition. If you’re self-employed it obviously makes sense to pay into a scheme for yourself. Pensions still offer great tax advantages, and after the budget even more flexibility, so they are certainly worth looking at. Hopefully that’s given you some food for thought. As always if you’d like any more information, or a personal review, please contact me on the numbers below. Have a great August and see you next month. Thanks for reading and see you next Month: Mob: 07919 241386 E-mail ian.nicholson@bwmltd.org Twitter @BWMLimited Web: www.BWMltd.org The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

Consolidating your pensions could make financial sense It’s essential that you regularly review all your retirement plans, to make sure you know what you’ll get when you retire. If you don’t, you could be: • Paying more charges than you need to. • Investing in funds that don’t suit your goals or attitude to risk. • Paying less than you need to fund your retirement, as it’s difficult to work out what you’ll get if your pensions are paid from several pots. It’s never too late to consolidate your pensions and be able to make better plans for your retirement. Call me now and talk to the experts about the best way forward for you. The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

LAW AND ORDER

year-olds, they would be handed down a minimum four month detention and training order.

I believe we generally get law and order right in this country, with a healthy balance between public prevention and private responsibility. We are also lucky to have a first-class legal system – we may not like it when Russian oligarchs use our courts to settle their differences, but it is a compliment nevertheless.

policing, coupled with the ‘broken windows’ policy, led to significant reductions in crime.

However, I believe we should get still tougher on law and order. We should adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ approach, combined with more neighbourhood policing and longer sentences. It is instructive to refer to Rudy Giuliani’s tenure as Mayor of New York in the 1990s, where an application of zero tolerance

It was for these reasons that I recently supported an amendment to the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill, which is currently making its way through Parliament. The amendment will impose a minimum gaol term of six months for offenders on their second conviction for carrying a knife. In the case of 16-18

By John Baron MP

Though opposed by the Government – these measures not being in the Coalition Agreement – the amendment was successfully passed with cross-party support from Labour and Conservative back benchers. On knife crime, the figures speak for themselves: in 2013, over 16,000 offenders were caught in possession of a knife, but 75% were let off merely with a caution, fine or community sentence. Parliament was right to send a tough message.

Driving through the Essex countryside near the Blackwater last month I saw the bright red haze of a bank of earth covered in poppies. The bank was the result of some land work and the seeds, which may have lain dormant in the soil for decades, germinated and rose from the bare earth, as they did in the battlefields of WW1. On the Western Front, trench warfare transformed the landscape. When I toured the battlefields and memorials I thought at first that the arable farmland looked similar to ours, but then noted that it doesn’t have the copses of ancient woodland that we have, as these were logged or destroyed by shells. Patches of young woodland have been allowed to generate and they have their wildlife too, so in our tour we were sometimes treated to the song of nightingales and warblers.

Constable Landscapes Ltd WE CAN TURN YOUR GARDEN INTO A PICTURE

For all your driveway and patio requirements,

Bird song is mentioned in many memoires and poems of WW1 soldiers. The birds were reminders of their home and a symbol of freedom. After bombardment, when the guns were hushed, skylarks sang as men clambered out of the trenches. There is a story of swallows nesting in a dugout and tales of masses of wildflowers and butterflies being the first to recolonise the bare ground as the front line edged west and east. Plants and creatures of the natural world, oblivious to the horror of man’s war, continued the instinctive pattern of their lifecycle. Back in our home county, remnants of the wars exist in many nature reserves. The Haven Plotlands Museum at EWT Langdon Hills paints a history of life in WW2. The track to Belfairs Visitor Centre was once used by anti aircraft guns and in Norsey Wood, you can still see the ditches left by a network of practice and defence trenches. At Stow Maries, a WW1 aerodrome was created to defend us against zeppelins and this is now part of a farm renowned for its wildlife and featured on TV. At the start of WW1 our landscape was very different than it is today. Farming had been in a period of depression for several decades as imports reduced the price of grain. Much of the less productive higher ground along the ridge on which Billericay lies was scrub. In WW2, the supply of imported food was cut off and so much more land was converted to agriculture, leading to the mechanised farming we have today.

Hence poppies alongside a field of wheat is a rarer pleasure now than it was in twentieth century wartime. And it is at risk of becoming rarer, as the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy threatens to reduce conservation measures in farming. But when roaming the country, watching and working for wildlife, it is so easy to be engrossed in the good and the bad news about wildlife fortunes and to take for granted the freedom that we have to do this in our land in modern times. Commemorations remind us of this freedom. In Flanders you can imagine that the voices speak from the farmed soil, the cornerstone of human welfare, and say “For your Tomorrow, we gave our Today”.

The national dailies are concentrating on the centenary of the Great War. Although interesting, there’s much to learn about how this period affected people in Billericay. One person, no longer with us, was Mary Needham, daughter of the Union Workhouse Master in Norsey Road. During 1997 Mary kindly agreed to be interviewed for my book BILLERICAY VOICES. Although then in her 90s, her memory was sharp and she recalled:

“In 1914 Billericay was a small village of about 2,000 people. Farms were scattered along Norsey, London and Stock Roads and more in Great Burstead. No roads had hard surfaces so were muddy in winter and dusty in summer. When blackberry-picking, the hedges were white with dust so fruit had to be carefully washed. “In the High Street there were lamp-posts with little glassedin gas-lamps produced in Job Salter’s foundry in the Laindon Road. Every evening the lamp-lighter arrived and pulled a chain with a hook on the end of a stick to set the lights

going. Carts and wagons full of wheat trundled down the High Street to market. People either walked or rode bicycles. “The first inkling of war came when soldiers arrived to stay with our family in the Workhouse. There was a camp down Mountnessing Road, but the extras were billeted with local people around town.” Mary’s family welcomed soldiers from the 6th Warwickshire Regiment. These men had volunteered at the beginning of the war. The captain and lieutenants boarded with Mary and her family in the Workhouse accommodation. She became so fond of them, but sadly none ever returned from war. The Worcestershire Regiment soldiers followed, with others arriving from different regiments over the years. One abiding memory was embarkation day at Billericay station. Although ordinarily stoic, she dissolved into tears when remembering the music from the band that accompanied the marching troops down the High Street towards this first stage of their embarkation to France.

The song “It’s a Long way to Tipperary” was particularly poignant for her. Then in 1916 Billericay hit world headlines. Mary and her family were awoken during the early hours of Sunday 24 September. The German L32 Naval Zeppelin airship was shot down, crashing at Snails Hall Farm. This “super” new Zeppelin was one of four that flew that night, via Belgium, over London, intent on destruction. Little had been achieved in the development of aircraft for military use, but Germany had pursued the science of aeronautics from its inception. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s enormous dirigible airships with their fearsome 5-ton bomb-loads terrified everyone. Sharp-eyed Second Lt. Frederick Sowrey had been on routine patrol in his BE2c aeroplane and had spotted the airship in the Sutton’s Farm aerodrome searchlights at Hornchurch. He reacted immediately, repeatedly firing and hitting the centre of the Zeppelin. Within seconds,

these were removed and utilised in the war that followed. There were also several lime trees initially but just two now remain.

it exploded and plunged earthwards. Local farmer John Maryon in Greens Farm Lane was the unlucky recipient of the huge burning airship. All 22 crewmen perished and were buried in Great Burstead churchyard, removed in the ‘60s to the German Military Cemetery, Cannock. The Great War finally came to an end on 11 November 1918 with a loss of millions of lives on both sides. There are

several war memorials around the Great Burstead area, but the most prominent is the stone memorial close to St Mary’s Magdalen church in Billericay High Street. This memorial was unveiled on 16 October 1921 by Major-General Sir William Thwaites KCMG, CB. Sixty two men from Billericay who lost their lives are etched thereon. From old photographs we can see that the area was originally enclosed by iron railings but

Every year on the Sunday nearest Remembrance Day November 11th, the town’s people gather around the war memorial and pay homage to those who died. The Royal British Legion members lead the parade which is conducted by the 2393 Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets. The parade is joined by the Army Cadet Force, youth groups and community leaders. Wreaths are laid by the town’s organisations and schools. Our bugler plays the Last Post and the town falls silent for two minutes as each individual, in their own way, remembers those who gave their lives for our today. (On August 3/4 St Mary Magdalen will display World War 1 exhibits and the Cater Museum is currently displaying Zeppelin artefacts and WWI ephemera). By Sylvia Kent.

The 4th of August 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of the day Great Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the Great War. This was later to be known as the First World War with fighting continuing until the 11th of November 1918, Armistice Day. The Royal British Legion was founded by British Veterans in the aftermath of the First World War and is at the forefront of Centenary Commemorations. As we come together in Remembrance of the events a century ago, we are also

reminded of the important work the Legion continues to provide today and which we will need to provide in the future following the many conflicts that have followed including the Second World War, the Falklands, Iraq and most recently Afghanistan. Nearly everyone in the UK has an ancestor directly affected by the First World War and all of us live with its effects today. The losses were felt in nearly every UK Town and Village including Stock where many names lay carved in stone on the War Memorial situated in

the High Street. As the UK’s Custodian of Remembrance, the Royal British Legion will be leading the Nation in respecting the sacrifices of the First World War, holding a number of Commemorative Centenary Acts of Remembrance at National, County and Branch level which will include an Act of Remembrance to be held at the War Memorial Stock at 11.00 on Monday the 4th August to which all are invited and welcome to come and join us to pay their respects.

By 1914, public performances of films had led to the rise of the purpose-built ‘picture house’, with a permanent picture house appearing in almost every town. Back then, feature film was only just beginning to arrive, with most cinematic offerings consisting of just short films, including travelogues and news items, and average shows just lasting an hour. The start of the Great War in August 1914 forced some picture houses to close, while others served useful in conveying war news, entertaining troops and raising money for war histories. 1914 also saw debut of silent comedian Charlie Chaplin, and by the end of the year he had made 35 short films, making him one of the world’s first great film stars.

Now in 2014, not only is there still a cinema in almost every town in the county, but numerous other opportunities for film to be enjoyed; from on-demand Internet streaming via companies like Netflix, to home cinema entertainment systems. Iain Martin, 36, from Leigh-onSea, has been passionate about home cinema after years working with high end audio and video technology. His company iCubed Home Cinema have been providing design, supply, installation and set up of Home Cinema and Smart Home Technologies to private clients, since 2012. Delivering the project to the highest possible standard, on time and on budget is a must to ensure client satisfaction and recommendations’. In his spare time, Iain is a family man and enjoys nothing more than spending time with his wife and four children. He added ‘And of course films and music score highly’. Billericay CC (Shirts sponsored by Paul Robinson LLP) 2nd XI Going strong, 3rds and 4ths well placed but 1stXI falters Having gained promotion last year the 2nd XI continue their winning ways, being top of their division and looking good for successive promotions while the 3rd and 4th XIs are well placed to challenge for promotion in their divisions. However, the 1st XI season is now proving to be disappointing with the batsmen failing to perform this year, the one exception being Paul Walter who is regularly making high scores. The 1st XI plight has not been helped with rain claiming games against weaker teams & having finished 3rd last year, the 1st XI now find themselves having to improve to avoid the prospect of relegation. Open Day games v Austria & Belgium national sides and ICC Trophy a Success On June 22 Open Day Billericay

narrowly lost their T20 match to the Austrian National Team but beat Belgium. Both games offered great entertainment on a well attended day that showed BCC at its best. During the following week BCC hosted 8 matches in the Pepsi ICC Europe Division 2 World Cup qualifying tournament which was won by Norway. The ICC applauded Billericay for their management of the days which progressed without problem apart from a freak whirlwind which threw benches in the air and tore down marquees. Fortunately this was on a non playing day so no one was hurt. Essex Fixtures August will see a full programme of representative games at Billericay. Spectators are welcome and admission is free. Credit scoring has become a key part of our financial lives. It impacts far more than most people think. It’s not just about whether you can get mortgages, credit cards and loans, but can also effect contract mobile phones, monthly car insurance, bank accounts, even if you can pay energy bills the cheapest way. Even if you’re accepted, we live in a ‘rate for risk’ world, so credit scoring then dictates what you pay too. Many people get unstuck by this. They apply for today’s record cheap rates, but find they’re charged more. So here’s what you need to know… You DON’T have a universal credit rating - there’s no blacklist. This is a myth. In the UK, there’s no universal credit rating or score, there’s no blacklist of banned people. Each lender scores you differently and secretly. So a rejection by one doesn’t mean a rejection by all. Their aim is to see if you match their profitable customer wish list. A key part is assessing the risk of non-repayment. If that’s high, many won’t lend to you; but some specialist lenders will like you more as they can charge you high. Yet even those who are good risks can be rejected, because the lender thinks you won’t make it money. Or perhaps you’re applying for a credit card, but it wants to cross-sell mortgages, so scores you on how likely you are to get one. What they know about you. Lenders assess you with 3 key pieces of information: 1) Your application form. Many underrate how crucial this is. Be consistent on each application form, eg, job title, salary. Regular inconsistencies can trigger rejection as you hit a ‘fraud score’ trigger. 2) Any past dealings with you. A lender you’ve banked with can interrogate your behaviour far more than others. This can work both for and against you. 3) Your credit reference files. These

come from either Equifax, Experian or Callcredit and contain info on the electoral roll, court judgments, what credit applications you’ve made, products you have and if you’ve paid on time. However, they don’t know everything. They don’t know your criminal record, medical history, speeding fines, salary, student loans, declined applications and more – don’t get too conspiracy theorist about it.

Do this even if just for the minimum repayment, then you can call up and pay more on top each month, see it as an insurance policy. 6) Don’t let ‘paid-for credit scores’ overly worry you. In recent years credit reference agencies have started to flog these, but don’t take too much notice. They’re only based on your credit file, not the other info lenders look at, and remember each lender scores differently. One may see cancelling a credit card as good as it reduces available credit, another as bad as it’s closing down a long term relationship. 7) Payday loans can kill mortgage applications. Some mortgage underwriters simply won’t lend to anyone with payday loans.

How to make yourself more attractive. Getting accepted for credit is like going on the pull - like people, different lenders find different things attractive. It’s more art than science, but there are some cosmetic changes that work for most. Here are 10 tips:

8) Deal with unfair defaults. First go to the firm that put them there and ask it to remove them. If not ask for a ‘notice of correction’ to be added to your credit file where you can explain briefly why it’s unfair and appeal to the Financial Ombudsman.

1) Get on the electoral roll. If not, getting credit’s tough. Check if you’re on it and apply via www.aboutmyvote. co.uk. If you’re not eligible, write a notice on all the credit files that you’ve proof of residency.

9) Check for address errors. An old, active, but unused mobile phone registered to your old address could even cause a mortgage rejection.

2) Stability’s good. If possible, put a landline, not mobile, on applications.

10) Don’t withdraw cash on credit cards. This is both expensive and seen as evidence of poor money management - AVOID.

3). Beware over applying. Too many applications for products especially in a short space of time can hurt. So if you’re about to get a mortgage, don’t apply for lots of credit cards just before. One problem though is often the only way to know what rate you’ll get is to apply, so the system is antishopping around. 4) Time it right. Problems stay on your file for 6 years, applications for 1 year. So if you can wait until they’ve lapsed to apply, it should boost your score. 5) Never miss or be late on repayments. Small errors can hurt large. Set up a direct debit to be sure you never miss.

O G O D , O U R H E L P I N A G E S PA S T

The Centenary of the outbreak of the First World War falls on 4th August 2014 and during these past several months, historians, politicians and sociologists have been reviewing what caused it and asking who was to blame for its beginning and its effect on the history of the rest of the twentieth century. But these debates mask the real stories of that terrible war – the thoughts, hopes and fears of the ordinary people that fought in the mud and blood of the trenches, or at sea or in the air. That’s because war is first and foremost about people, and people are individuals who have to make sense of the horrific circumstances in which they find themselves. Some may choose to argue about whose side God was on in the ‘Great War’ but that is a futile argument, because God does not take sides in war. The Bible teaches that He is passionately concerned for the people who live in countries caught up in war and that’s because He made us and He loves us and wants the best for us. In peace or war God is interested in us as individuals. We see this In Psalm 116 when King David shares his heart (these words could so easily have been written by a soldier on the front line): “I love the Lord, because He hears me; He listens to my prayers. He listens to me every time I call to him. The danger of death was all round me; the horrors of the grave closed in

on me; I was filled with fear and anxiety. Then I called to the Lord, ‘I beg you, Lord, save me!’ The Lord is merciful and good; our God is compassionate. The Lord protects the helpless; when I was in danger, He saved me. Be confident, my heart, because the Lord has been good to me. ”

One of the most popular hymns of the First World War opens with these memorable words: “O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, Our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home. ” And this ‘hope’ for many in our Armed Forces, both then and now, is one of the reasons General Lord Richard Dannatt, when he was Chief of the General Staff, instructed the Chaplain General to: “Make sure that everyone deployed on operations has some understanding of the Christian message.” Should they fail to return from their tour of duty. To make sense of war we can do nothing more than to enjoy the peace and freedom that is ours through the sacrifice of thousands and to place our faith and eternal hope in God and in his Son, Jesus Christ

to work towards the freedom and peace God desires us all to enjoy - whatever our creed or colour.

The Royal British Legion (www. britishlegion.org.uk) have started a brilliant campaign, beginning now and continuing through to 2018, called ‘Every Man Remembered’. It proposes to honour every single commonwealth serviceman who fell in the First World War and echoes the famous poem ‘For The Fallen’ written by Laurence Binyon in September 1914, just a few weeks after the First World War began, which has become synonymous with Remembrance Sunday: “They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. ” The 4th August 2014, a day of remembrance! With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name

The centenary of the First World War is not, as some suggest, a day to glorify war, it is a day to remember the horror and barbarity of war and its death and destruction. It is a day to commit ourselves, once again, to the struggle against evil, the struggle against the very things that to lead to war in the first place and Web: www.emmanuel-church.info Email: paul@billericaychurches.org
