Billericay’s Lauren Platt’s X Factor Live Show Dream Billericay’s very own rising star, Lauren Platt, 16 from Ramsden Heath, has been wowing television audiences with her singing talent in the early stages of this year’s X Factor. At the time of going to press, Lauren had already got through the first two stages of the competition, impressing the judges with renditions of Queen Latifah’s ‘I Know Where I Have Been’ in the first round, and her own version of Whitney Houston’s ‘How Will I Know’ at the arena auditions, in front of 5,000 people. The judges heaped praise on Lauren, with Mel B exclaiming ‘I’m so excited I could slap you’. Lauren, who has been singing and performing for most of her life, said ‘It was really nerve-wracking and quite daunting being in front of the judges at first. But once I started singing I felt ready. The arena auditions were weird, I felt so small (on stage). It’s really exciting though’.

For Lauren, who has lived in Billericay since aged nine, and has been singing for as long as she can remember, there was never any doubt that the X Factor was the competition for her. ‘I’ve been watching X Factor since I was eight and I have always dreamed of being able to audition and sing for the judges.’ As for being one of youngest contenders, and on the criticism reality TV shows face for putting pressure on their young stars, Lauren is assured in her outlook ‘If you are 100% ready you are 100% ready, it doesn’t matter how old you are.’ And her goals for the show and beyond? ‘To get to the live shows would be amazing. I don’t want to think any further than that. Ultimately, I just want to be able to sing and make people happy. I just want to be the best that I can be’.

Head Out Around Town This Autumn Following the late Indian summer, as we sadly pack up our summer shorts and barbecues for another year, we prepare for winter, digging out our thick coats and wellies, and deciding whether it’s X Factor, Strictly, or the latest celebrated US television drama (Breaking Bad anyone?) that is going to keep us occupied on those cold wintry nights. But as October draws upon us and we move into November, there are plenty of events in the Billericay area, of both a spooky and jovial nature, to entertain residents in the run up to Christmas. At the end of the month, the spooky and paranormal will descend upon us with the onset of Halloween. Believed to have both Celtic and pagan origin, All Hallows’ Eve is a time of year dedicated to celebrating all things ghostly and has become more and more popular in the UK every year. Typical festivities include trick-ortreating, fancy dress parties, apple bobbing and pumpkin carving, and more and more public attractions in the area are marking the festival with special events. On 30th and 31st October, Barleylands Farm Park & Craft Village

are holding ‘Spooky Nights’. Running from 6.30pm to 9.00pm, Spooky Nights offer spine-chilling activities for families and children of all ages, including opportunities to come face to face with snakes and creepy crawlies, join a devilish disco or explore the heart-pounding Haze Maze, filled with atmospheric ‘smoke’, special effects and spooky surprises. Also on offer is Wat Tyler Country Park’s ‘The Cursed’, a week long event starting on 24th October and running until 1st November. Then, as we leave the spooky goings-on of October behind and head into winter in earnest, we pay tribute to the infamous anarchist Guy Fawkes with Bonfire Night on 5th November. Once again this year, residents of Billericay and across Essex

will be marking the occasion by heading to the annual fireworks display at Lake Meadows on Saturday 8th November. Organised by Billericay Round Table, the display is in its 45th year, and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever, with over 20,000 people expected to turn out for the event. Gates open from 5.30pm and the event kicks off with its usual torchlight procession, lighting of the bonfire and the Heart FM Roadshow with Martin & Su. Advanced tickets are £6.00 for adults and £4.00 for senior citizens and under 15s, with under 4s going free. They are available online at www. billericayfireworks.co.uk and from local retailers. So, in short, residents of Billericay needn’t turn in for the winter just yet. IMPROVING ENERGY EFFICIENCY As the summer draws to a close, and we approach the colder weather, initiatives to help lower household energy bills are worth exploring. BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Hello there! Our Senior Citizens Concert proved a roaring success with over 150 people attending. They were ‘royally’ entertained by the Town Community Choir, Alexis Steele and Martin Weaver, before being taken home in style by Club members. Just to cap our charity work so far, we have promised a donation of £500 for a new audio computer to help those with blindness disabilities as well as other smaller donations where appropriate. The International Disabled Swimming event planned for October is now under way when 6 of our club members will travel to Bruges with 10 disabled people plus helpers This is an International swimming gala between Lions’ clubs in Germany and Belgium and is held bi-annually in alternate venues. We have managed to sneak a fund raising quiz in on November 15th at Christchurch Hall, entitled The Year in Question – 2014 being the theme. There is no food or drink provided so bring your own nibbles and refreshment, tickets are £5 per person. Plans for the Christmas Market, the Christmas Sleigh and our popular Taste of......... The South Essex Wildlife hospital were kind enough to lend me a hedgehog recently. Although they don’t normally lend animals in their care this was a special favour as I was taking it to a local primary school. Many of the children had never seen a live hedgehog which is not surprising, given the decline, something I wrote about in Nature Notes one year ago. And many of the areas they live in have been isolated by building and removal of vegetation so small populations become isolated and die out. This was the point I wanted to make to children: telling a story written by Essex Wildlife Trust about a hedgehog whose garden refuge had been paved over. I asked the children what hedgehogs eat and answers given were typically ‘grass’ and leaves’. The children were quite surprised that the diet consisted of beetles, caterpillars, worms, sometimes eggs and young of ground-nesting birds, small snakes, frogs and slugs. Because the latter have been prolific this year those of us who have gardens would welcome a hedgehog. If you are lucky enough to have one visit the garden please don’t give it cow’s milk as they are lactose intolerant. But they are partial to a bit of cat food. Hedgehogs may be an animal that benefits from one of the solar farms that are appearing in our countryside. These are controversial as it is often development on Green Belt land and many of us don’t want a vista of open farmland replaced by rows of solar panels. The naturalists may take a different view. If the proposed site is adjacent to a nature reserve and imposing on the vital links to this reserve then we will be worried. If the area is currently intensive arable farmland with little wildlife then we will see the solar farm as a net gain, provided that it is surrounded by often promised new hedgerows and grassland and that any left over fragments of land are allowed to scrub over. The application does discuss long grass for brown hares, boxes for bats and wildflower strips. We want assurances that these measures will happen if the development goes ahead. Autumn often brings ‘Zugunruhe’. This is a German word that describes the restless behaviour of animals when they feel it is time to migrate. I don’t know if it was Zugenruhe or just a cool north-easterly breeze that, one day late last month, made the birds more active after the soporific summer. I only saw common local birds but they were numerous and restless. Amongst them, 3 song thrushes chased each other around a rowan tree, a party of 6 jays flapped in circles and chaffinches flew into trees and made ‘chink’ calls characteristic of autumn. Many more birds are migratory than we realise and we get many wintering continental birds – the jays, finches and thrushes we see in the parks and gardens in winter may not be the same individuals we hear singing in the spring.

Train ticket prices are to logic what reindeer are to scrabble. In other words, they’ve nothing in common. If you want to save money on the train, take the logic book and throw it out of the window. While travelling by train can be cheap, efficient and easy, the pricing system is a mess. So to really hone down the cheapest priced tickets you need to understand and combine first the simple tips, then the bizarre… Book 12 weeks early for cheaper fares. Most people know if you book early you’ll get cheaper advance train tickets. Yet it’s important to understand these are generally sold in tranches, in other words there’s a set number of each type, so the aim is to buy them before they go. The key time to look is around 12 weeks before you want to travel, as that’s when the timetable is set so most operators launch their advance tickets then or within a couple of weeks giving you maximum choice. So if you know you’ve got something pencilled in you need to travel to, diarise so you can be ready to pounce. Grab a (discounted) railcard There are more national railcards available than there used to be. These normally cost £30 (though often there are codes to discount this check on www.mse.me/traindeals) and reduce all fares by a third. Therefore if you’re likely to spend over £90 even on a one-off trip it’s worth it. The main cards are… Family & Friends Railcard. Two people can be named on this, and then a named person and up to three other adults can travel and get 30% off the fare, providing you’re travelling with between one and four kids, who get 60% off. Two Together Railcard. This one’s relatively new. It gives two named people on the card providing they’re travelling together a third off. If you often travel with different people, you could be named on more than one card to cover the combinations.

Senior Railcard. This gets over 60’s a third off. 16-25 Railcard. Also a third off, though it’s often cheapest to buy the 3 years card (and worth remembering to do it before your 24th birthday to give you maximum time). Split tickets, not the journey Now it’s time to really throw the logic book out of the window to make some really big savings. Instead of buying tickets for the whole journey, instead bizarrely buying tickets for its constituent parts separately can slash the price – even though you’re travelling on exactly the same train, at the same time, possibly in the same seat. It’s perfectly allowed within the National Rail Conditions of Carriage and the only rule is that the train must call at the stations you buy tickets for. I’ve built a tool www.mse.me/ ticketysplit that searches for variants for you to see if you can save. One of the best ever examples I’ve seen of this was on a direct London to Durham return when the cheapest ticket was £301. Yet buying four singles for the same journey: London to York, which was one of the stops, York to Durham, and then in reverse, was £82 for the same train at the same time - possibly even the same seats. However, it’s important to understand that this is an example the savings vary train by train. Even an hour later the same split may not work, so you need to check each time or use the various web tools available to find your split. Look for hidden promos Lots of train companies have hidden promotions buried on their websites – which you won’t find if you’re going through a ticket booking website, such as TheTrainline.com or Redspottedhanky.com. For example, at the time of writing East Coast has 10% off some advance online fares and 50% off selected super off-peak tickets to London, while

Buy rail tickets when not travelling by train to get discounts This sneaky trick sounds bizarre but it works. National Rail offers 2for1 discounts on a host of attractions across the UK – you just download and print out a voucher and present it with a train ticket. Attractions include Ascot Racecourse, Alton Towers and Madame Tussauds. For example, if you wanted two tickets to London Zoo, as an adult ticket costs £24, providing the train ticket is less, it’s worth buying one even if you won’t actually go by train (just pop to a station on the way). Though of course it’s an even better saving if you’re actually using it. Know your train refund rights You may be entitled to money back for delays over 30 minutes, every operator has different rules. Technically the delay or cancellation needs be the operators fault, such as train or signal failures. Yet even when not, such as weather, strikes or maintenance work, some firms will pay out if you claim (as for a claim form when you arrive). More help in www.mse.me/ traindelays.

Breaking Free From Addiction Sadly, few areas of society are free from the oppression that drug and alcohol addiction brings. They affect a great diversity of people, from: young to old; employed to the out of work; high achiever to those caught up in the mundane things of life. And for those of you struggling to cope with family, friends and colleagues caught up in the downward spiral of addiction, hope can sometimes be in short supply. Which is why I want to give you an invitation to Emmanuel on Sunday 19 October to meet some of the team from Teen Challenge London and hear some of their success stories. Teen Challenge grew out of the extraordinary ministry of David Wilkerson to the street gangs of New York, documented in his book: ‘The Cross and the Switchblade’ which became an international bestseller. One of the gang members who became a Christian, Nicky Cruz, also told his amazing story in the book: ‘Run Baby Run.’ Teen Challenge is now an internationally renowned organisation and is one of the world’s leading rehabilitation centres and holds a remarkably high documented cure rate for helping people become free from drugs

and alcohol. Statistics show that many secular government funded rehabilitation programmes have less than a 10% cure rate after treatment. However, independent research in the United States has consistently shown that over 70% of Teen Challenge graduates have remained drug and alcohol free – when surveyed five years after graduation! Remarkable statistics indeed and a wonderful reminder of God’s ability to touch hearts and change lives in our current generation. Teen Challenge London is an 18-month, faith-based, residential rehabilitation programme located in East London. Based on Christian principles, the programme offers men aged between 18-40 spiritual and academic training, equipping individuals to return to society as responsible adults free from drug and alcohol addiction. Teen Challenge London last visited Emmanuel in April 2010 and many of us were deeply moved with stories of release from addictions and, especially, reconciliation in families. Be sure not to miss another amazing morning on Sunday 19th October at

It was on a warm September evening, that I was invited to try Billericay’s newest Italian restaurant, Pizza Express. Replacing one Italian with another, Pizza Express is situated in the middle of the High Street, where its predecessor Strada had sat for some 6 years, although you wouldn’t have guessed it. We were greeted by a wonderfully refurbished restaurant, with open plan bar and kitchen, decked out in the company’s corporate branding of white and black. We were shown to our table, selected our drinks and began to peruse the menu. Feeling slightly overwhelmed by the number of dishes available, we opted for the ‘Mozzarella & Tomato Salad’ and signature dish ‘Pizza Express Dough Balls – served with garlic butter’. Both meals were of a suitable size and left us feeling ready to tackle a main course. My dining partner chose the ‘American Hot – Classic Pizza’, comprising of pepperoni, mozzarella & tomato, with jalapeño peppers – a mouth and eye watering experience for even the most adventurous of diners! My main course, selected from the ‘Al Forno’ section of the menu, was still sizzling when it arrived to the table – ‘Lasagna Classica’ or simply Classic Lasagne, filled with layers of tomato covered beef and mushrooms in between succulent pasta, made for a hearty meal. Feeling rather full and content, whilst sipping on a peroni, it was time to look at deserts - something to help complete and compliment our dining experience. A ‘Raspberry Sorbet’ and ‘Chocolate Fudge Cake’ were enjoyed whilst having a chat with restaurant Manager Chris Oakenfull, who came over to ensure our visit had been enjoyable. Having been with the company some years, and cutting his teeth at Pizza Express in Colchester, Chris explained how he was both excited and confident at taking on the new site in our humble town. A big sleep was welcomed when arriving home – one of those ‘Sunday afternoon’ feelings – you can’t beat it!
