Welcome

Hi Around Towners and welcome to the February edition of Rayleigh’s newest community magazine. Love is in the air this month with Valentine’s Day just around the corner - everywhere you look there are hearts, candles, cards and chocolates lining the shop shelves, along with the dreaded Easter Eggs!! (still a couple of months to go til Easter though guys – don’t panic). Inside this month we have a great article on the Rayleigh Neighbourhood Watch. There has been a spate of crimes hitting our streets over the past couple of months, so we thought we’d give you some extra information from the local committee. Kelly has also been in touch with Celia Clark from RRAVS (Rayleigh, Rochford & District Association for Voluntary Services) who do a great job for the voluntary sector but are also encouraging local, independent businesses to get involved too. We’ve also got all the regular updates from Rev. Mike Lodge, Nature Notes with Neil Sumner, MP Mark Francois and both the Rayleigh Rotary and Lions Clubs. So read on and enjoy... Is there something we’re missing? What would you like to see from YOUR community magazine? A subject we aren’t including, which you think would be of interest to fellow readers? Please get in touch and let us know – sales@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk or call 01277 658444.

That’s the community Spirit! Tucked away at 105a on Rayleigh High Street is the real heart of our district. Rayleigh and Rochford District Association for Voluntary Services (RRAVS) have been the strong pedals for our community for almost 35 years and the driving force behind outreaching appeals, services and organisations for our children, our elderly and everybody in between. From family care and support to Christmas Carol services, RRAVS is the platform for a multitude of voluntary facilities for us all, ensuring we are all catered for no matter what our wants and needs. RRAVS advises on funding programmes for community and charity projects and events that take place. The volunteer centre from which they operate consists of committed volunteers giving up their time to give back to local groups and services. Lend a hand, gain work experience, meet new people and gain new skills whilst giving back to our towns. This winter, RRAVS distributed hundreds of care packages to organisations aiding our over 60’s, low income families and children in the district. This is just one fantastic example of why volunteering your time can really make a difference to our friends and neighbours and how something small can make a big impact. For latest news, newsletters or any information you can visit their website www.rravs.co.uk. If you are interested in volunteering and giving something back to our town please download an application form from the website or drop by and go and say hi! It REALLY DOES mean a lot. by Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume

especially heartened to hear recently that residents in the Rochford District have reclaimed their title of being the best in England when it comes to recycling. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) placed Rochford at the top of the 2012/2013 league, with a recycling rate of 66.7 per cent, beating the nearest rival South Oxfordshire, as well as more than 350 other local authorities across England. The district previously topped the table in 2010/11 and is now once again in first place after slipping back to third in 2011/12.

I hope that quite a few of you took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch last month. At the time of writing, which is before the event, I’m not sure that the birds will be as varied and interesting as in recent years when we had colder winters. There will be common garden species such as blackbirds, robin, collared dove, woodpigeon, blue and great tits. But some birds are only possibles in a one hour time window. A wintering blackcap would be a great bonus. This little warbler has a fabulous song that enriches our woodlands and scrubby areas in the springtime. Until the 1950s it was known only as a summer visitor but then some birds from Central Europe decided to come here for the winter. We don’t know why, but they survived and many more have been doing so since. So look for a small grey bird with a black cap that’s the male, or a brown cap, sported by the female. It particularly likes raisins and apples but sunflower hearts or fatballs will do. Most of our summer blackcaps probably winter north of the Sahara. This migration behaviour has helped their population and they have increased whereas most of our summer visitors have declined. It is not only the reduction in insect life and habitat that has affected our summer visitors, it is also that food is harder to find on migration and in their wintering quarters due to change of land use and more extreme weather.

Worse still, many of our songbirds that we protect and enjoy here are subject to trapped or shot as they make their way through Southern Europe and Northern Africa. Migrating birds were once an important and sustainable food source for local people but as bird populations decrease and human populations expand, any capturing now has a big impact. And nowadays much of the killing is just for sport. The birds are very disadvantaged by modern technology: high velocity rifles with telescopic sites and MP3 recordings of bird calls to lure them into the traps. There are some countries now that I try to avoid buying products from until their governments get control of this problem. But back to watching our local birds. Behaviour in the garden can be fascinating. I see the female chaffinch go confidently into the squirrel proof feeder, yet the male stands outside looking bemused (suddenly I’m reminded of the wife and myself in the aisles of Waitrose). The male resorts to picking up the fragments of seed and nut from the ground. Its not just birds, I have seen the occasional mouse doing the same. One late summer evening in the garden I was waiting to see bats and my eye was caught by a wood mouse running along the branches of the cherry tree and helping itself to seed from the bird feeder. An unexpected pleasure.

R AYLEI G H ROTARY CLUB Welcome again to the Rotary section of Rayleigh Around Town magazine. Christmas and the New Year now seem a long time ago but so far none of our club members have offered to enhance our charity money with the offer of a sponsored diet! We held our first fundraising Casino night at Rayleigh Lanes on 11th January which was a great success with 70 members and non members enjoying a ‘flutter’ and helping us raise over £600 on the night, we look forward to repeating the event. On Monday 17th February we are holding an ‘Introduction to Rotary’ at 7.30pm at The Rayleigh Golf and Country Club, Hullbridge Road, Rayleigh and we would be pleased to welcome anyone to join us who would like to know more about the things we do at our club. We probably do not match the stereotype image of a Rotary Club! If you wanted to see what we have done in previous years and particularly the background to our ‘Royal Philharmonic Concert in the Park’ plus some details of the charities we have supported in the past do look up our club website www.rotary-club. org.uk. Following a two course dinner the meeting will include a talk on the history of Rayleigh by Mike Davies, well known for his ‘Rayleigh through the Looking Glass’ web site on Rayleigh events. Mike is a very good speaker and his talks are always worth experiencing. Please contact Andrew Shackleton on 01702 201783 or robertashackleton@googlemail.com to make arrangements.

Love is… It’s said that one of the golden rules of marriage is not to forget your wedding anniversary! I think that you can also add to that, don’t forget Valentine’s Day on 14 February, birthdays and every other special occasion you can think of…! I don’t want to focus specifically on weddings anniversaries or Valentine’s Day itself, but more generally about all of our relationships with one another, surrounded by family and friends and also our relationship with God, whether you are married, in a relationship or single… There are many quotes to help couples in their marriages and relationships, such as “It’s not marrying the right person, it’s being the right partner”, or “Never go to sleep angry”, and so on. But, what couples really need to know is: • Why do men’s socks smell like that? • Why do women like cats? • What are those gritty bits that men leave in the bath or shower? • What do they do in the bathroom with all those little bottles? • What do women find so fascinating about curtains? • What do men find so fascinating about the offside rule? In all this there is one key component which is vital; love. The word loves occurs over 500 times in the Bible. And in a well-known Bible passage, sometimes called a hymn to love, the word love appears nine times. It’s in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthian people where he suggests that: ‘Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.’ 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, verses 4-7. With regard to our relationships with each other and in our relationship with God, there’s more to it than just love. The best piece of practical advice that I can suggest in all of our relationships is not to give and take, but to give and give, to love and love. Love is about commitment, faithfulness, togetherness and sensitivity, and we are able to apply this to all of our relationships with one another and with our relationship with God, through our understanding of who Jesus is and can be in our lives; an expression of unconditional love. And why should we love? As we read in the Bible, in John’s first letter, Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. (1 John Chapter 4, verses 11-12). Happy Valentines Day! Yours in the love of Jesus,

The Revd Canon Mike Lodge Team Rector Parish of Rayleigh
