Welcome
Happy Easter to all you Around Towners! We at Around Town HQ will be taking a well deserved break over the weekend, ready to return back to work revitalised and on top form on Tuesday 2nd April! Please join me in saying a big warm welcome to our new advertisers this month – Powermax, The Old Kings Head, The Star, Swan Home Improvements, Helen Arber Performing Arts, Chelmsford Council & the Dance Steps Academy. Please remember to mention Around Town when responding to the adverts inside as we rely on your support to keep our local businesses going and we appreciate all of your support. Kelly is back and has penned a great article on the national Horse meat scandal that has taken the country by storm these past few months and we have (pardon the pun) the low down from the horses mouths – that being our local, independent butchers – Masons of Billericay, P.M Andrews of Ramsden Heath & Greens Family Butchers of Ingatestone. Kelly has also been getting up close and personal with non other than Billericay resident Brian Belo.

www.billericay.roundtable.co.uk
Our current Chairman, Simon Poole, is now within his last month in the role after what has been another busy year around town. We’re fairly sure he will be ‘lost’ over the next few months as the new Chairman will take over the reigns and start steering Billericay Round Table in his chosen direction. We would like to provide you all with some important updates on some of the charities and projects we’ve been involved with recently and some of the fun that Billericay Round Table members have been having in the process. The donations that we are so grateful to be able to make come from money raised by our fundraising that we work on throughout the year within the community – the biggest event obviously being our fireworks spectacular in Lake Meadows. (Don’t panic – our social events are funded by each of our members!) You may have seen in the local press recently details of our recent donation to St Lukes Hospice in Basildon. The hospice’s van had to be taken off the road at Christmas and has caused headaches in the meantime as it was a vital asset enabling them to support their fundraising stores. Following a £12,000 donation from Billericay Round Table they are very pleased with their nearly-new van and they can continue the excellent work they do around the community. We are also assisting local groups such as Synergy which provides vital services to community members that really need their assistance. The Princes Trust were also very pleased to receive support from the Round Table and they will be working closely with some local individuals to provide them with the support and guidance needed to progress in our community. The new Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit at Basildon University Hospital will soon receive a new ECG unit from us which will stay in their department to support and assist our community members when we, our friends and family may need it most. This equipment will also be used for their 6 week structured exercise and education programme. Have you heard about ‘Jenny’s Match’? (Google it, there is a great write up on this at www.BillericayEssex.co.uk) This was a charity football match organised by Ross Kerwood which will raise money for Cardiac Risk in the Young – in memory of his sister who tragically lost her life in February 2012 while playing football. It was an inspiration to hear about Ross’s efforts in organising this event and Billericay Round Table wanted to show our support to him and his family with a donation to the charity. Other than the work at Round Table we often get out for social events – the latest was when a large group of us went down to Rayleigh Karting where a great time was had. Obviously some tactics were being planned to halt last year’s winner but it was clear from the start that there was going to be a new winner this time round which was great to see. Our next social will be a few beers in the high street followed by a curry – there’s even rumour of a trip to Bas Vegas to relive our youth! If you would like to know more about Billericay Round Table or even get involved with some of the things we do, you are more than welcome to contact us at

Scrub! This is not an instruction to wash. I mean it as a noun and in the context of plants. Put simply, scrub is native plants which generated naturally. The word ‘scrub’ sounds derogatory: implying that it is stuff to be removed, something untidy, messy. But the nature lover sees it in a different context, as a haven for wildlife. Scrub is a stage between open ground and woodland. We have to control it especially on rare wildflower meadows and, if left, our lawns would eventually turn into scrub. In turn, trees will seed and eventually grow and shade out the shrubby plants. Younger scrub is usually bramble, which is so valuable for wildlife. In the spring the flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies and hoverflies. It provides dense nesting habitat for many bird species - longtailed tits are already building their domed mossy nests in bramble bushes. In the summer, spiders adorn it with webs and in the autumn it provides blackberries for many species, including us! All year round it provides cover for small mammals, including our declining hedgehogs. Hawthorn and blackthorn are other plants which will flourish in scrub. The perfect scrub has a mix of plants including tall herbs and grasses growing along its edges. I am always looking for scrub, especially in the spring as with it will come birds. The bigger the patch of scrub the greater the variety of birds and other wildlife. My favourite local patch is in Queens Park Country Park. On May 11th I will lead a bird walk and, if the weather is reasonable, it will be alive with a variety of song from warblers, finches and thrushes. If you’d like to come along please email me for details.

Touch Rugby
taking the world by storm In the 1960’s, Australian Rugby League players created a warm up drill that involved simply touching their opponents to signify a ‘tackle’. This allowed them to stretch their legs whilst practicing the core skills of rugby – running, handling, evasion and support play without the fear of injury from a stray tackle.
Willowbrook Sports & Social Club Stock Road, Billericay Essex, CM4 9PQ
Since then ‘touch rugby’ has become a staple training ground activity for Rugby Clubs (league and union) across the globe and more recently, it has become a recognised sport in its own right. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) now supports the rapid growth of the game in this country with more than 15,000 adults playing regularly across the UK in social competitions. The game is very simple: all you need is a rugby ball, a space to play and a group of friends. Teams are normally six-a-side and can be of all abilities and ages with men and women playing in mixed teams. So, with such a wave of interest, Billericay Rugby Club are joining the revolution and are welcoming groups of friends, workmates, pub teams, retired 15-a-side players, referees who fancy a smaller pitch and supporters to come and join in the fun. Following a trial run last year, our annual ‘Bee Festival’ (advertised overleaf), to be held on Saturday 27th April, will centre around an open invitation touch tournament and provides a great day out for family and friends. Visit our website www.pitchero.com/clubs/billericay for further details and to register a team. We are then trying to promote a weekly 6 a-side touch tournament over the summer where teams can enjoy some exercise and then a cold beverage or two with their team mates and opponents. Again, check out our website for more details as they become available. So, why not ditch a session at the gym, get some fresh air and enjoy some Touch Rugby with your mates this spring/summer?! by Around Town Rugby Correspondent Chris Goldsmith

Neighbourhood or Community? I have recently completed studying for an MA and, for my dissertation, I examined the significance of Neighbourhood and Community. I found that neighbourhoods are chosen very carefully with many factors involved in deciding where to live, such as: location; style of housing; quality of schools; commutability; shopping and leisure facilities.Increasingly, however, it is being recognised that communities are defined as much by the networks people move in as by the neighbourhoods they live in. We know that many people travel long distances to participate in community, such as the gym; sports club; hobby group; pub; even church! This raises the question, of course, whether community is physical or relational. Some sociologists propose five essential areas when defining the nature of community: • • • • •
Geographical: Where you live; walk the dog and shop! Professional: Your place of work; school, college or university. Social: The pub; restaurant; gym; and sports club. Cultural: This would include arts; music; and cultural experiences. Spiritual: This may be a church, temple, synagogue or other places of worship.
All of these, it is suggested, have equal importance if we are to develop as wholesome human beings who contribute to the well being of the community, and the neighbourhood, in which we live. The Bible has a lot to say about community. In fact, some of Jesus’ most famous words challenge us about what it means to be a good neighbour. Remember when Jesus said that we are to: “... Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and Love your neighbour as yourself” (Luke 10:27). What is the difference between a neighbourhood and a community? Might it be that a neighbourhood is where we live but a community is how we live? As both Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury reminded us recently: ‘in humility and simplicity, we are to protect each other and our world.’ What might you be able to do this month to support your neighbours and to strengthen the community in which you have chosen to live? You’ll be surprised at the difference you can make. With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name

Around Town with Brian I caught up with the lovely Brian Belo in Vetro bar earlier this month to talk about what he’s been up to since his Big Brother fame, growing up and why he doesn’t mind that some people may call him stupid. Billericay’s own, Brian was thrown into the limelight as a teenager in 2007, winning Channel 4’s Big Brother. Now, at the age of 25, he has recently moved into his own house, been concentrating on his career in writing and is currently working on his first pilot drama. “I can’t believe six years has passed since Big Brother! I was 19 when I went into the house and it was like a lad’s holiday to Faliraki for 3 months straight, only broadcast to the whole country. People who know me from the show know the teenage Brian. I was like most normal Essex lads at that age, just up for a laugh. Time has flown by, but saying that it’s more noticeable because all my mates are starting to settle down now, think about marriage and children - it’s that transition between being a teenager and an adult.” Growing up in Essex, Brian always knew he wanted a career in television and his A* grades in media studies at school reflected that. “At school I always wanted to be behind the scenes in telly, have a career in production or something like that. I wasn’t a crowd follower, but more of a crowd hopper. I had lots of different groups of friends and was very much my own person. I think there is a lot of stigma attached to ‘Essex’ and being from Essex which is why some may brand me as stupid. I don’t mind that though because I’m quite a private person so only people who take the time to get to know me, know who I am.” After winning the most talked about reality show in the world, Brian’s life changed dramatically. I wanted to know what it is like when everybody knows your name and a few tips to handling it. “It is crazy being recognised all the time, even still. I am thankful to the show because it has taken me everywhere and has given me so many opportunities. Meeting Cheryl Cole was amazing, it’s the most star struck I’ve ever been, she’s such a sweet girl. I don’t have many celebrity friends, most of my mates are labourers or plumbers but Razor Ruddock is a lovely bloke, I have all the time in the world for him and also Jodie (Marsh) is a good friend. “My advice to anybody, in the industry or not, is to be nice to everyone. From the tea boy or the runner right up to the person at the top. Everything goes round and will come back on you in the end and people are constantly climbing up and down so it’s all one big circuit. Never take yourself too seriously and don’t listen to critics. There will always (always!) be critics.” Since the sudden whirlwind of fame at a young age, adulthood has been a bit calmer for Brian and he is now embarking on new ventures towards his career in writing. “I have done a lot of reading in my twenties and have learnt so much. It has really broadened my horizons and mind. I’d love to write thought provoking books. I recently moved into my own house, (How grown up!) I’ve had to learn how to use a washing machine and iron my clothes and everything! I’m doing well but feel bad because my Mum always ironed my bed sheets but I just can’t face that- It’d take me hours. Getting post through my door is pretty exciting as we didn’t get much when I lived at home. I don’t go to many celebrity events at all and have recently been working on a new project. I’ve written a satire drama ‘Team Panache’ and the first read through for the pilot was at Elstree film studios a couple of weeks ago. I’ve got a great cast together for it! It’s all very exciting but hard work and I can’t wait to start filming later this month.” As well as keeping your eye out for ‘Team Panache’, you can catch Brian on new Saturday night panel show ‘I Love My Country’ on BBC One later in the year. I was 19 when I went into the house and it was like a lad’s holiday
Peter Andrews, owner of P.M.Andrews butchers in Ramsden explains, to Faliraki for 3 months straight, only broadcast to the whole country. People who know me from the show know the “Business is up at least 25% due to scandal. I think it’s sickening that teenage Brian. I was like most normal Essex lads at that age, just up for a laugh. Time has flown by, but saying that some meat has travelled over 7 different countries to reach outlets in the it’s more noticeable because all my mates are starting to settle down now, think about marriage and children - it’s that UK. That in itself, horse meat or not, is scary enough. I can honestly say between being a teenager and an adult.” Itransition have never eaten a ready meal! And now, especially, I don’t ever intend to”. Growing up in Essex, Brian always knew he wanted a career in television and his A* grades in media studies at school reflected school I always wanted to be the scenes in telly, have a career in production or something like Peter, 52,that. has “At lived in Ramsden all his life andbehind has owned the butchers that. After winning the most talked about reality show in the world, Brian’s life changed dramatically. I don’t have many celebrity friends, most of my mates are labourers or plumbers but Razor Ruddock is a lovely bloke, I have Quality Family Butchers all the time in the world for him and also Jodie (Marsh) is a good friend.
P.M.ANDREWS
“My advice to anybody, in the industry or not, is to be nice to everyone. From the tea boy or the runner right up to the person at the top. Everything goes round and will come P.M.ANDREWS back on you in the end and people are constantly climbing up and down so it’s all one big circuit. Never take yourself too seriously and don’t listen to critics. There will always (always!) be critics.”
Quality Family Butchers
Since the sudden whirlwind of fame at a young age, adulthood has been a bit calmer for Brian and he is now embarking on new ventures towards his career in writing. “I have done a lot of reading in my twenties and have learnt so much. It has really broadened my horizons and mind. I’d love to write thought provoking books. I recently Traditional High Class Family Butcher moved into my own house, (How grown up!) “Apart from the odd crocodile request it’s just the usual stuff. I’ve never been asked for horse meat and so there certainly isn’t a market for it.” I went to see Martin Green of Greens butchers in Ingatestone to find out his views on the matter. “It’s a constant topic here; the whole town are talking about it with us. We are trusted and so we should be, we can tell you every detail about the meat you get from us. I am not surprised by the scandal simply because you just can make 4 burgers for a pound. Outlets are selling meat cheaper and cheaper for silly prices and it’s just not doable.” Martin, who claims to be the best looking butcher in the area, and his son Jennifer & Robert Mason Bradley have run the family butchers for 3 years and love their local clientele. Trade has increased significantly since the debacle and the Greens are glad to be providing good quality, local meat to their customers. “I don’t eat any other meat. My wife and I take turns to cook at home and my favourite is probably rump steak. However, my speciality is toad in the hole with our sausages.” With business booming for our town’s butchers there is a welcome sense of loyal community spirit in the area. Robert Mason of Masons in Billericay High Street, is another example of why you just can’t beat your local butchers.
Kelly with Bradley and Martin Green
“Billericay has such a fantastic community and its exceptional High Street is the flagship of the town in many ways. Of course, I have taken a chance to compete with the larger stores and supermarkets but I genuinely believe there is room for a quality butchers shop in any high street.” By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume.

Harry’s Charity was founded in memory of Harry Smith, a wonderful two year old boy who died from leukaemia in January 2009. His parents, Jim and Karen Smith, started the charity as a way to thank Great Ormond Street Hospital for their efforts to save Harry’s life and to try and create something positive from a shattering tragedy. All proceeds – every penny raised goes to the aid of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Great Ormond Street. In the four years since the charity started we’ve raised about £60,000 and we achieved this goal on Harry’s Night which was held on February 23rd at Stockbrook Manor!
The next big event is Harry’s Day on Saturday June 29th and it takes place in the Billericay High Street. All the pubs in the High Street get involved as well as several other businesses and it’s a proper old fashioned family fun day. To find out more or to get involved please contact Karen Smith on MENTION AROUND MAGAZINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS 24 PLEASE 07971175152 or Sue Kilcommons on TOWN 07964054488
