Big Fashion Fundraiser at Studio 360 Fitness Carmen Contreras Spearman, an entrepreneur from Billericay has been working hard since the start of the year to organise a charity fashion show that will take place on 23rd March in aid of Hamelin House. Enjoy Boutique, Lamps, The Moir Health Clinic and Yellow Jersey Cycles are just a few Billericay businesses who have jumped on board, lending clothes, accessories or donating treatment for the raffle. Jonas Garmendia and Stevie Woods PT at Studio 360 are donating one to one PT section for our raffle. Carmen has also secured a dress donation from a surprise high profile fashion designer that will be showcased on the catwalk. It’s not just companies, but gym goers and other members of the local community are also pulling together in a team effort to make the fashion show a success. Carmen explains “I’m excited to announce that a famous style icon has donated a dress for the catwalk. I’m holding a competition on my website where people can guess who it is in the run up to the show! It will be a fun evening for all to come down and donate to a fantastic cause”. Hamelin House situated on Stock Road in Billericay will be celebrating its 30th Birthday this May. The House provides respite care for children aged 5 to 18 who have learning difficulties and who may also have additional support needs. Manager, Sonia Buckingham was thrilled to hear about Carmen’s fundraiser. “We’re able to keep our doors open to parents and children who need us because of people like Carmen and Studio 360. The House works hard to take the children out into the community as much as possible and relies on donations, volunteers and generosity in order to provide our service users with the best quality of life. It’s so easy to overlook small local charities and I’m so grateful that this time we have been recognised.” Carmen has lived in Billericay with her husband Dave Spearman for 3 years, loves spending time with her friends and family and is always keen to learn new things. She has just launched her own company ‘Style My Shape’ that operates from Studio 360. Carmen is no stranger to the fashion world; “I moved to Essex 14 years ago from Venezuela, where I used to run my own boutique. I used to travel to New York to buy my merchandise and organise fashion shows for shopping centres and dress TV presenters. I’ve always been self employed and value my freedom. My own venture, ‘Style My Shape’ launched in February and is a personable service to help people not only achieve the body image they wish for, but also to help them make the most of their natural beauty with a full styling advice service. There are a range of non-surgical fat loss treatments available. Drawing on my experience in the fashion and styling industry, I hope to make the fashion show a fabulous success!”
Standard tickets for the show are £5 and £10 for VIP. They can be purchased from Studio 360 Fitness and the show will take place at the gym on 23rd March at 7pm. All competition entries to guess which mystery fashion designer has donated the dress can be submitted on the website www.stylemyshape.co.uk

Welcome
So it has finally started to stay lighter of an evening and let’s hope that this month we can say a firm farewell to this cold snap we’re currently enduring! As always, we’d like to thank all of you guys for your positive feedback and continued support along with our regular advertisers, for whom without you all, we wouldn’t have a magazine. We’d also like to say a big hello to some new businesses who’ve joined the Around Town Family this month, including: Thermaseal, Style My Shape, Best Friends Vets, Redwood Clarke, The Brothers Fish Bar, The White Hart Inn, Robinsons Heating Solutions, The Windmill Theatre School, Vetro Bar and La Bottega Italiana. Please support ALL local businesses! It’s so important for us to keep our High Streets and Towns thriving during these tough times! Kelly has been unwell but... like a true pro, she has still delivered us a couple of great articles – an interview with local author Sylvia Kent and why Mothers Day this year will be extra special for Kelly. Wildlife expert Neil Sumner is back reporting on the changing seasons, Revd Paul Carr is delivering an Easter service and we are ‘bowled over’ to welcome Billericay Cricket Club onboard.

The Six Nations Update! The 2013 RBS Six Nations tournament has gripped Billericay Rugby Club (BRFC) with England looking to be producing similar levels of performance to those which we enjoyed in the build up to the 2003 World Cup win. It is clearly too early to talk about World Cup predictions and even Grand Slams (England have made a hash of these things before…) but beating the All Blacks
Willowbrook Sports & Social Club Stock Road, Billericay Essex, CM4 9PQ
in the Autumn and winning Six Nations games whilst France, Wales and Ireland have faltered has given the English contingent at BRFC something to shout about. We are proud to have Irish, Welsh, Scottish and South African club members and supporters amongst our ranks and there is a healthy international rivalry when the games are televised at the club… healthy if you discount the beer of course. In a bid to build some interest in the second half of the RBS Six Nations, we thought that we’d provide a bit of a picture of how the teams have performed up to the point at which that this article was written (13th February): ENGLAND. Appear to have dismissed the demons of the 2011 World Cup and have built a squad under Stuart Lancaster that is capable of beating the best and grinding out results. They outwitted an Ireland team of more experience. England clearly have lofty ambitions that centre upon the 2015 World Cup but we’ll have to wait and see how the rest of the Six Nations pans out before people get too carried away. FRANCE. Aaahhh the French. A side full of talent, flair, artistry and other such traits that make everybody love to watch them but none keen to back them. Having lost to Italy and Wales, it is unlikely that France will trouble the engraver this year but they are more than capable of causing an upset for others. IRELAND. Irish eyes were certainly smiling going into the second round against England in Dublin. Ireland were defeated in poor conditions, but not out and a win against Scotland on February 23rd, is likely to determine whether Ireland can keep themselves in the hunt. ITALY. Surprised everybody with their opening round 23-18 win against France but like Scotland, they have grown as a team over the last few years, no longer relying on a few talented players to offer some glimmers of hope whilst being well beaten. The Azzuri are more than capable of further upsets and a climb up the final Six Nations table in 2013. SCOTLAND. The Scots have gone from strength to strength over the last few years. They have proved their collective mettle with a convincing victory over Italy having been beaten by England in their opening match. Scotland are more than capable of rocking the Irish or the Welsh in their next two games. WALES. A team that has been very strong over recent years, Wales finally ended an 8 game losing streak by beating France 6-16, having lost to Ireland 22-30 on the opening weekend. So, halfway though and all to play for. For those of you who love your rugby and want some atmosphere, come along and watch the rest of the Six Nations matches at Billericay RFC on Stock Road behind Stock Tennis Club. You’re sure to find a compatriot to share the highs, lows and a beer with.

There has defiantly been a lot of community focus taking place since the turn of the New Year. At our recent meetings we have had some interesting speakers who have taken time out of their busy schedules to inform Billericay Round Table members about the services which their organisations are providing to our ever expanding community. It was surprising to hear about all of their additional services which they provide. I wanted to take this opportunity to share some information with you. Dementia Adventure Dementia can affect adults of all ages, but is more common the older people get. This local Community Interest Company are actively working to raise the profile of Dementia in our area. Training courses, research and consultancy services provide valuable information about how nature can help people living with dementia and their carers. The team at Dementia Adventure love to get out in to the fresh air in the woods and local parks - they are offering a series of free park walks every Wednesday at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, as well as getting out on the open water with a sailing holiday on offer from Maldon in May. Round Table will stay in touch with this group to provide assistance with reaching out to our community. We would invite you to contact this group if you or anyone you know of has a diagnosis of Dementia, or if you work with people living with dementia, or to find out please do contact them to get your answers. Other than providing the specialist palliative care to individuals who are in an advanced stages of life threatening illnesses, we were surprised of to hear about other services which are provided at patients own homes or satellite centres. One particular service caught my interest which was to provide young children who have experienced a death in their family. The care and support services provided extends beyond patients to their family, their children, friends and carers, helping them to cope throughout the patients illness and then in their bereavement. As I write, cold weather has swelled the numbers of thrushes arriving into Essex from the north. Exotic-looking waxwings are also being seen, often in urban areas where they feed on the berries on ornamental trees. But with this being the March edition, thoughts should already be turning to Spring. White snowdrops are blooming in gardens and may be found naturalised in woodland. On one farm I visited recently they were mixed with a delightful patch of yellow winter aconites. Hazel bushes have dangling displays of ‘lambs tail’ catkins on the many straight stems which come from past coppicing, and catkins will soon follow on willow and alder. As the month progresses, the blackthorn bushes will give some roadside hedges a vivid ivory colour, and it is the time of year to enjoy the wood anemones in ancient woodland, especially where they proliferate in Norsey Wood. The first of our summer-visiting birds arrive, firstly the chiffchaff, which takes its name from the sound it makes. Anywhere where there are tall trees you may hear the monotonous 2-note song repeated over and over. Look for a tiny light brown bird flitting between branches as it searches for insects. The song is not to be confused with the great tit which also has a two-note song ‘tee-cher, tee-cher’ louder, bolder and often ending in a bell-like jing. Winter does not suddenly end and Spring start. The seasons and wildlife behaviour can swap almost on a daily basis as the temperature rises and falls. One day hares are boxing and chasing in the fields and song thrushes are singing, then on another day both may be searching desperately for food on frozen ground.

Christ Is Risen: He Is Risen Indeed. Alleluia! Those words will echo through the world-wide Christian Church on Easter Sunday (31st March) as we celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead. Many people look upon Jesus’ resurrection as a myth, yet there is a great deal of credible historical evidence (from secular historians) to support the fact that Jesus lived, was crucified and, more importantly, that his body was missing from the tomb when he said he would rise from the dead. One of the more tangible evidences of Jesus’ resurrection is the fact that it has changed the lives of many of his followers down the centuries, and continues to touch the hearts and minds of many in our world today - 2000 years after that first Easter Sunday morning. It is because of this that Holy Week is one of the most significant weeks in the Christian calendar as it tells one of the most compelling stories ever told: God’s story! A story that reminds us how: “God loved the world so much He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Sometimes, in the busyness of life, we often find ourselves unable to make time to remind ourselves about God’s story of love, mercy and grace. Sometimes, we need to set time aside to slow down, to quiet our mind, to lay aside our own agenda, and to be available for new experiences. This can be prayer. It can be worship. It can be meditation. It can be reading the Bible. It can be attending church. It can be quiet reflection. May I encourage you to ‘make time’ for God this Easter and journey through Holy Week, from the: Praise of Palm Sunday; Poignancy of Maundy Thursday; Sorrow of Good Friday and the Joy of Celebration on Easter Day. May I extend an invitation to join us at Emmanuel or a church near you? May God’s richest blessing be upon you during these final days of Lent as we prepare to celebrate all that Easter brings.

An Elephant in the High Street!? Writer and historian, Sylvia Kent from Billericay has enjoyed a long, eclectic career writing about all sorts of subjects, but for her ninth book she has turned her interest towards helping raise money for St Mary Magdalen church in Billericay High Street. ‘St Mary Magdalen – Billericay’s ‘Church in the High Street’’, is Sylvia’s second book to be bought out as an eBook. It was released just before Christmas and is testament to Sylvia’s fond love of Billericay and its history. “I found it so interesting researching such a beautiful church that we all know so well. I even found photographs of when a couple from the circus got married and there was an elephant roaming down Billericay High Street! I don’t go to church all that often but I realise the value of this church to its town and the great expense of its upkeep”. Writing has always been Sylvia’s passion and her thirty years in the industry boasts an impressive array of assorted experience. From OK Magazine to local newspapers, BBC Radio 4 to Essex Life, freelance columnist Sylvia enjoys writing about food, gardening and celebs. She explains “My career has taken me everywhere and I still go along to many events. Every year I get a press pass to the Chelsea flower show which I adore. I have bumped into a few faces there, JLS and Cliff Richard to name a couple”. Sylvia is a prominent figure of our community, being a regular contributor to the local press, Trustee at the Cater Museum, a public speaking judge for Mayflower High School and Archivist to the Society of Women Writers & Journalists. “I have written many short stories which you can find in the library and blog regularly about what I get up to around town. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, gardening and wine making”. You can purchase ‘St Mary Magdalen – Billericay’s ‘Church in the High Street’, online for £1.80 and Sylvia is giving 100% of the money from book sales to the church.

Mother’s Day Whilst living in China for 2 years I missed a lot that went on back home; Christmas, Birthdays, weddings and of course Mother’s Day. As much as my stint abroad was an amazing experience I did miss home and more specifically, my Mum. Her big hugs when I was down, her home cooking when I was sick of rice and noodles and just being able to see her smile in person and not on a computer screen! Nobody compares to your Mum. Former nurse, Sharon Gordon, works as a full time support worker for The Hamelin Trust and is an incredible Mum to my two younger sisters and I. Earlier this month Mum qualified as a Makaton sign language user and we couldn’t be more proud of her! They do say a Mother’s work is never done and it’s pretty evident that is true. As well as taking care of her service users everyday, Mum still has to keep tabs on three busy girls, run around after and worry about them and that can’t be an easy task! While I was away I realised that yes, it’s important to make the most of your life, go on adventures etc but it’s equally as important to make the most of the invaluable people in your life. It will be so lovely to be home to celebrate Mother’s Day this year because Sharon Gordon isn’t just my Mum, but also my best friend! By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume.
