The Coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost! As the worldwide church continues to celebrates Jesus’ resurrection, we will soon remember His ascension to heaven and then recall the exciting ‘signs and wonders’ of God’s generous gift of His Holy Spirit to His church, known as Pentecost. Pentecost is much more than a bank-holiday weekend; it is a celebration of a world-changing event with permanent and eternal consequences - not a long forgotten report of a strange mystical experience that happened to a handful of people two thousand years ago. Many are sceptical about a supernatural God moving in a supernatural way, however, there are three things worth bearing in mind when we think about the Holy Spirit that should give encouragement in our journey of faith: The Holy Spirit comes to inspire us: Tired and deflated, we find our faith revitalised and refreshed. Sluggish, we find ourselves empowered with renewed vigour. Hesitant and timid, we find ourselves carried along by a momentum that owes everything to God’s leading and guiding. The Holy Spirit comes to ignite in us the passion of God: And comes to cleanse and purge whatever is dead and dry in our lives. We find ourselves - as those first disciples did - ablaze with a passion for living and inflamed afresh with God’s love for the world around us. The Holy Spirit comes to illuminate Jesus: Those early disciples might simply have enjoyed a wonderful spiritual refreshing! They could have huddled together and invited others to ‘come and share with them’ - but they didn’t. Instead, they shared their experiences of a life changed by Jesus, as Christians continue to do today, so that others may know that same life enhancing experience for themselves. We are delighted to welcome the Bishop of Bradwell to Emmanuel for our 10.30am Pentecost Sunday service on 19th May 2013. May I give you a warm invitation to join with us? Who knows, it could be a life-changing experience for you, too. May you will allow God’s Holy Spirit to: inspire; ignite and illuminate you as you walk with Him. With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name Revd Paul A. Carr Emmanuel Church, Billericay Web: www.emmanuel-church.info Email: paul@billericaychurches.org Tweet: @EmmanuelCM12

BILLERICAY CRICKET CLUB Est. 1875

Billericay’s Around Town Magazine - 1/2 page A5, May 2013

With only a week to go to the start of the season things were looking bleak at Billericay CC. The unusual long cold winter had taken its toll on the ground and had delayed preparation in readiness for the season. But, what a difference a week makes. The weather turned dramatically and 7 days of warm weather with a drying wind means that there is a real chance that matches will commence as planned. The 1st XI looking forward to the new season in Division 2 of the SNEL having gained promotion last year have strengthened their squad and welcome back Dave Houghton, the popular New Zealander who had a great season with bat and ball in 2012. Paul Robinson Solicitors have renewed their senior shirt sponsorship for 2013 but the colts are looking for a new sponsor following 3 years of support from Billericay Round Table and local companies are invited to consider advertising their company while supporting and being associated with a local club that provides a traditional community sport service. Essex 2nd XI kick off their season at Billericay with a one day 50/50 match against Suffolk on Sunday April 21, followed by a 4 day game against Durham starting on Monday April 22. Spectators are welcome, entry is free, and the bar will be open serving real ale. www.billericaycc.co.uk Blunts Wall Road, Billericay, CM12 9SA

Making the most of the summer By the time this article reaches you, Billericay Rugby Club should have hosted and enjoyed a successful Bee Festival (end of season fun day) and be looking forward to our Annual Presentation Dinner and Rugby Tour over successive weekends. We then take a break in May and June before returning to training in July (where any new members are always welcome!).

Willowbrook Sports & Social Club Stock Road, Billericay Essex, CM4 9PQ

Whilst, as Rugby players, WAGS and social members, we look forward to this period of merriment…our waistlines certainly do not and the majority of players find the first few weeks of pre-season training pretty tough. Therefore, we thought that it may be worth highlighting some summer exercise options that offer an alternative to the gym. Triathlon – a number of our members now compete in Triathlons over the summer. The mix of swimming, cycling and running gets them out of the gym and into the sunshine (if we ever get any this year…) whilst clocking up the miles that keep you in great shape. Motivation aside, it’s as easy as getting into the pool or out there on your bike or legs but if you don’t fancy going it alone then there are Triathlon Clubs that meet in Basildon (www.east-essex-triclub.co.uk) and Blackwater/Maldon (www.blackwatertri.org.uk). CrossFit – is a craze that has swept the world over recent years. The fitness regime originated by American Greg Glassman in 2000, has now become a sport with an annual “CrossFit Games” attracting an international field of some of the fittest people on the planet. The daily programmes are based upon strength and conditioning exercises whilst being constantly varied and involving functional movements i.e. helping you become stronger, more agile and better at movements that you use in sports and other active pursuits. Workouts are typically short (20 minutes or less) and intense, demanding all-out physical exertion…trust me, I’ve tried it, you could to at Crossfit 13 in Hutton or Crossfit CM2 in Chelmsford. Pilates – as you learn when getting that bit older, your body needs rest as much as it does intense exercise. This is especially true when you play rugby 7 months a year and need to shake off persistent injuries. A number of professional athletes and clubs from the worlds of rugby, football, athletics, golf, tennis and adrenaline sports are now using Pilates as a method of ‘cross training’ where they balance the effects of playing the sport (knocks, bruises, strains etc) and build core strength and stability in vital muscle groups such as the abdominals, lower back, hips and shoulder/knee stabilisers (the ones that get hurt playing rugby). Many leisure centres and clubs also offer classes outside during the summer months so you can find that Zen moment. At Billericay RFC, we are assessing the interest in a weekly summer Touch Rugby evening where groups of friends of all ages and abilities (without needing to be a BRFC member) can come and enjoy some exercise. Keep an eye on our website for details By Around Town Correspondent B.Ranger (www.pitchero.com/clubs/billericay).

Ingatestone Pub Team All Set For The Big One Adam ‘Millhouse’ Miller, 22 from Ingatestone, bought his first road bike a year ago, just a couple of weeks before he had drunkenly agreed to ride with his pub team from London to Brighton for charity. A year on and he is now looking forward to a 100 mile cycle marathon in August. Adam’s cycling career was instigated one night in Stocks bar in Ingatestone when he, Landlady, Sarah Young and his mate, Norman Swatman all agreed to take part in the London to Brighton bike ride in aid of Essex Air Ambulance. “Nobody believed we’d do it and it was amazing the amount of sponsors and backing we received! The ride was the day after I arrived home from a lads holiday in Zante but nevertheless I was there, determined and after raising over £4000, I wasn’t going to let anybody down. Sarah had never done any cycling before at all and when we crossed the finish line she was in tears!” Adam is taking part in the brand new 100 mile ride organized by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson. This new cycling event from London to Surrey and back again is in celebration of the 2012 Olympics and will be utilizing the Olympic routes. “I love raising money for charity and what better way to do it than getting out and about on your bike. It’s only when I presented our last charity cheque to Essex Air Ambulance that it hit me just how much money and support charities need to function. This time, Norman and I are raising money for the Bone Cancer Research Trust and hope to raise £2000 between us.” Just before the big one in August, Adam is cycling from London to Southend, a 52 mile ride, for the British Heart Foundation on 21st July. Adam, who works for a publishing firm, is fairly new to the cycling world but far from inexperienced after throwing himself in the deep end last year. Before riding his bike, Adam’s life was ruled by a slightly different passion. “As a teenager I was an avid footballer but after a knee injury, never fully recovered and was unable return to it. Cycling is a great form of exercise and gets me out and active again. In the future, I’d love to take part in the London to Paris bike ride but I have a long way to go until then and I am just concentrating on this summer!” You can sponsor Adam Miller online through his fundraising page www.justgiving.com/AdamM-ridelondon-surrey

This is a new feature to Around Town, where we will be introducing you to a local tradesman each month. With so many cowboy traders being exposed on TV, we thought it was time to praise the good guys! This month we are looking at Vince Doughty of Revive Paving. Vince, 43, has been in the paving business for around 4 years and has been running his own company ‘Revive Paving’ for 2. Previous to this, Vince worked in both the printing & construction industry but since the birth off his son turned his hand to paving and hasn’t looked back since. “I have a lot more control over what I do now that I’m my own boss. When you work for yourself it’s your name that is at the bottom of a job so you work to the highest possible standard”. Working in the paving game, much like in many trades, Vince is up against big name competitors. “Because I live and work in the town people give me recommendations and I’m trusted. It’s so important to put back into the local economy by supporting us. No local tradesman is likely to ever give you a shoddy job when it’s on his doorstep. If you don’t do a good job, you don’t get work. When I’m working I give my all, exactly what I’d expect if I employed somebody to work on my own house”. When he’s not paving, Vince plays darts for the Railway pub team in Billericay and likes to spend as much time as he can with his 3 year old son. This spring, why not play at being in The Voice, nature-style? You could be Tom Jones or Jessie J but in the open and early on a nice day in May. Instead of listening to aspiring vocalists, listen to bird-song. And the challenge is not to judge their quality but to separate out the distinctive song of each type of bird. It’s also a challenge to ďŹ nd the source of the song from deep within the bush – you don’t just turn your chair and look it in the eye. Bird song is a wonder. How does that tiny throat make such incredible sounds? A singing wren puts its whole small body into that song. Proclaiming its territory – “this is my patch!â€?. Attracting a mate: “I sing the loudest so I must have the best genesâ€?. Their calls can be loud too. Last year I found a family of wrens behind the New White Hart during ThingamaGig, their calls to each other penetrating the noise of a succession of rock bands. From The Voice to Harry Hill. I like the slow repetitive notes of song thrush, the purity and variety of nightingale and I like the fast rattling melodies of blackcap and garden warbler? But which is better? There’s only way to ďŹ nd out - go and listen for yourself. You can hear blackbirds, thrushes and chafďŹ nches in the gardens, warblers and dunnocks in the scrub and skylarks in the ďŹ elds. May is when the bird song peaks as arrivals from Africa join our resident birds. The season is brief, although some birds will sing on through June it does get noticeably quieter as they focus on rearing their broods. But then the warm weather brings more butteries and owers – so much to enjoy and look forward to at this special time of year. Neilsumner123@aol.com follow me twitter.com/neilsumner123

Over 70 Craft, Farmers, Trade and Charity stalls have already applied to join the stage, arena, kiddies and pony rides to create a wonderful free day out for the family. In addition there will be 200 classic cars on display. If any local businesses are interested in being associated with this event then please contact djr66@aol.com. The Rotary Club of Billericay Mayflower also organises Billericay Christmas Market.

Rotary is an international organisation that seeks to improve the world for everyone by raising funds for good causes. As well as supporting local charities Rotary has initiated and driven the eradication of Polio from the planet by funding inoculation programmes and provides water boxes to cleanse undrinkable water in areas desperate for this resource. When there is a disaster, Rotary supplies shelter boxes containing a tent, tools, water box to give shelter and enhance survival prospects. New members are welcome. BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Welcome to the Lions corner of Around Town and many thanks to the publishers for giving us this space to promote future Lions news and activities. For those people who have never heard of us, we are the guys offering books outside Poundland in Billericay High Street every Saturday morning. We also run the Christmas sleigh, the Taste Nights, the Billericay Beer Festival in June and as many other activities as we can think of to extract money for local charities. There’s usually something in the pipeline which involves us seeing and being seen in the town, fundraising or spending money on local causes – the sort of things that slip through national or local government funding. In the coming months, I hope to give you a good idea of how Lions work, as well as announcing forthcoming events, which can also be seen on our website below.

The Lions club celebrate their 34th anniversary this month, with a dinner dance at Stockbrook Golf Club, and the new Lions year starts on July 1st. So, I look forward to speaking to you again as soon as time allows, ‘bye for now. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.

After some consecutive days of good sun light I feel we can relax with the thought that spring has finally arrived. Over the coming weeks we will have a good number of events booked into our website calendar for the next year. Please keep your eye on our website for what Billericay Round Table are up to. If you feel like joining us please get in contact with us.

Hannah and friends recently organised a charity football match to raise awareness for their charity in memory of former Mayflower schoolgirl and Billericay resident Jenny Kerwood who tragically lost her life in February 2012 aged 22. If you would like to know more about Billericay Round Table or even get involved with some of the things we do, you are more than welcome to contact us at media@BillericayRoundTable.co.uk Please visit our website www.billericay.roundtable.co.uk

Harry’s Charity was founded in memory of Harry Smith, a wonderful two year old boy who died from leukaemia in January 2009. His parents, Jim and Karen Smith, started the charity as a way to thank Great Ormond Street Hospital for their efforts to save Harry’s life and to try and create something positive from a shattering tragedy. All proceeds – every penny raised goes to the aid of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Great Ormond Street. Over the past four years since the charity started we’ve raised just over £60,000 and have purchased a vital signs monitor costing £23,500 and £33,500 for special pressure relieving mattresses. Harry’s mum Karen with friends Vicki Brown and Lance Roberts (Landlord of the Railway pub, Billericay) visited Great Ormond Street in April, to present the hospital with the latest target cheque.

Karen and Jim would like to thank everyone for their continued support over the last 4 years & hope that this years’ Harry’s Day will see the start of their new target get underway. The goal is £15,000 to purchase a Continuous Veno-Venous Hemofiltration Machine for the PICU. The CVVH machine is used to clean a patients blood - the blood is run through the machine and then given back to the patient. One was actually used on Harry while he was in Great Ormond Street so this new goal is a really poignant target for Karen and Jim. Please show your support for this worthy cause and visit Billericay High Street on SATURDAY 29TH JUNE for the annual Harry’s Day event – family fun games and activities throughout the High Street from the Railway and Crown to the Rising Sun and New White Hart. Please give as little or as much as you can to help us reach our next goal. Look out for the June edition of Around Town for your chance to win over £500 worth of prizes in our biggest competition yet! If you’re a local business and would like to support Harry’s Day by donating prizes for our Around Town competition, then please PLEASE contact Stuart SinclairAROUND on 01277 TOWN 658444MAGAZINE or email stuart@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk MENTION WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS
