Welcome
Hi Around Towners and welcome to the August edition of Billericay leading community magazine. Finally, it seems that Summer has arrived - and it’s been a scorcher! ThingamaGig was another great success this year and raised over £2,000 for Harry’s Charity and Hamelin Trust, so thank you to everyone who came along and to those who helped out over the weekend. Speaking of Harry’s Charity, our June competition - to win over £1,000 worth of prizes – was won by Hugh Maguire (pictured). Hugh was chuffed to bits when we met up and was presented with his loot by Karen Smith (Harry’s mum – also pictured). New advertisers joining the Around Town family this month are: TMA Decorating, Wat Tyler Country Park, S&D Banks, Caffe & Cream, Presscrete, Bumps Away, Bellefontaines’, Sonja’s Barbershop, Harry’s Bar and Little Flo Flowers. I must just mention that as I sit writing this at Around Town H/Q on a humid July morning, listening to the claps of thunder and down-poor of heavy rain outside, I’m convinced the sudden change in weather is a message from the Gods, alerting us of a new, important arrival – CONGRATULATIONS to William & Kate on the birth of their son and heir!!

The Wait Is Over! It’s a Boy! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (their families and the international community) have welcomed Prince George of Cambridge, the newest member of the Royal Family. The world has been waiting, in a heightened state of frenzy, for weeks for the arrival of the Royal baby, with 100’s of journalists, photographers, reporters, technicians (and fans) capturing all the comings and goings in and out of the Lindo Wing where Prince George was born and, of course, outside Buckingham Palace where, as tradition dictates, the official announcement was placed on an easel. Waiting is an unusual experience for us. We have come to expect immediate results on an almost daily basis. We have instant coffee. Instant replays. Instant messaging. Instant results. Instant food. Instant downloads. Instant loans. In truth, however, waiting has much to teach us. Noah waited 120 years from the time God told him to build the ark until the time of the flood. Abraham waited 25 years for the birth of his son Isaac. The Israelites waited 430 years before God delivered them from the Egyptians. Moses waited in the desert for 40 years before he was sent by God to rescue the Israelites. They, in turn, waited for 40 years in the wilderness before entering the land of Canaan. Jesus waited until he was 30 to start his public ministry. Waiting in life, even for a Royal arrival, is part of our human experience and it reminds us how God’s timing is not always our timing and how His ways are not always our ways. It’s a hard to comprehend the responsibility that this 8lb 6oz bundle of joy will have as third in line to the throne. Prince George is destined to be the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states and their territories and dependencies, head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations and the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. He certainly needs our prayers. Might you be able to pray this prayer (issued by the Church of England) for the newly born prince? God our Creator, who knows each of us by name and loves us from all eternity: we give you thanks for new life and human love. Bless William and Catherine as they welcome their son into the world. Give them patience and wisdom to cherish and love him as he grows. Surround the family with the light of hope and the warmth of your love today and always; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name Revd Paul A. Carr Emmanuel Church, Billericay Web: www.emmanuel-church.info Email: paul@billericaychurches.org Tweet: @EmmanuelCM12

BILLERICAY ROTARY CLUB July 14 saw a record day for Summerfest on Sun Corner. Record temperatures, record attendance, record number of participants and a new record of £6,000 raised for charity. Having looked at the stalls and bought lunch from a variety of food outlets visitors were entertained by some excellent bands: Cockney Treble, Audioscope, Rob Acton and Bigg Dogg on the stage and by the arena displays from local clubs: Mayflower Performing Arts, Billericay CC, Wendy Anderson dancers, Billericay Rugby Club and St Anne Line gymnasts, together with the ever popular dog display. Ice Cream, Frozen yoghurt, Pimms and Beer provided cooling refreshment or there was a more traditional tea room to shade from the sun. Funds raised will go towards the club’s major 2013/14 project to support Thriftwood School in establishing a sixth form college for special needs pupils. The following weekend saw the ever popular Music in the garden event hosted by Rotarian Derek Colby and his wife Yvonne in support of Shelter Box and funds were raised to purchase 3 of these life saving and sustaining survival kits that include a 12 person tent and all the essentials required to survive after a major catastrophe such as an earthquake, hurricane or tsunami. The next fund raising event is on September 8 on the river Chelmer in Chelmsford when a Bell Boat Race [similar to better known Dragon Boat race] takes place and local clubs are invited to enter a team and enjoy a fun day out [see contact details below]. djr66@aol.com | Google: Mayflower Rotary Billericay or email: rarackham@btopenworld.com
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Welcome to the Lions corner of Around Town. The club elections are now over and all the officers for the forthcoming year are almost in place. Next year our President is Trevor Hull, a keen golfer and a Lion for just 4 years! Although President Trevor will have the experience of all of us ‘older’ members to fall back on he is looking forward to the new year with just a little fear and trepidation, wondering what’s in store for him. The other officers will slide smoothly into place and keep the wheels of the club turning as usual. Indeed, new fund raising events and social outings are already in the pipeline with letters and emails flying in all directions!
The 4th Billericay Beer Festival held on June 28th – 30th at the Football Club sees out the end of the old year and we expect it be bigger and better than ever. Over 50 real ales and ciders will be available to taste, up to 9 bands will be playing throughout the weekend and there will be hot curries of all sorts to whet your appetites! Why not try it and meet all of the local Lions? For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
Consecutive days of SUN, along with some great wins in Tennis, Rugby and Cricket, not only this - the weather was great for events that took place within Billericay over the same weeks; Beer festival, Summerfest, Urban Games and not forgetting Thingamigig. If you did not know about any of these events you need to read this article more often and visit the Billericay Round Table (www.Billericay.RoundTable.co.uk) website to see what is going on in your community. We recently donated a cheque to a group called Kids Inspire who work with children. Our donation of £4559 will go towards their mentoring project which will start later in the year to directly assist our community over the coming years. It was a great experience to visit this group to get a better understanding of the work that they are involved in. Please visit their website to find more about their work www.kidsinspire.org.uk/ The school holidays are here for some to enjoy, have a great August with whatever you choose to do.

A BIG Billericay Welcome to Hamelin Trust’s Exchange on its 20th Birthday Hamelin Trust is a local charity which offers a range of care services for children and adults with profound learning difficulties. The Exchange is one of these care services and is a resource centre which runs three projects, providing opportunities, activities and employment training for adults with learning difficulties. Whether it be going to college or going horse riding, The Exchange aim to create equal opportunities for their service users. Founded in 1993 by Maureen Kieffer, The Exchange was based in Wickford for 20 years and earlier this year has moved to Hamelin Trust’s central office in Radford Crescent, Billericay. The move has bought all day services under one roof creating a community hub for the charity I went along to the new premises to welcome everyone and see how they were settling in. Maureen Kieffer lives in Billericay and is the founder and manager of The Exchange, explains “We aim to be out and about for 50% of the time and so after being based in Wickford for 20 years we built up a wonderful relationship with local community and shops, everybody knew us and would have a chat with us out and about. We look forward to doing the same in Billericay. If you see us out and about, don’t cross the roadcome over and say hi!” Already, local club Billericay Striders have got in touch and now work in partnership with The Exchange, providing weekly sports sessions for the service users in Lake Meadows. This Hard at work at the re-use and recycle centre, an year, Hamelin Trust was one of the local charities that music employment training project festival ‘Thingamagig’ raised money for. We can all do our bit to welcome these guys into the community, whether it’s ensuring our shops are more wheelchair friendly or just giving a big smile. If, like the Billericay Striders, you are a local club or group and want to get involved with The Exchange please get in touch with Maureen. The new base in Radford Crescent is a great space, but like with any move it doesn’t quite feel like home yet. Maureen wants to build a garden so that the adults can enjoy being outside this summer. She said “We have a great concreted area down the side of our building where we’d like to build a bit of a garden and get some nice features. If anybody can help us in doing so please get in touch!” The Exchange is just one of the care services in Hamelin Trust that work hard to promote choice for people with disabilities of all kinds. With this new community hub in Billericay, the charity hopes to raise awareness and also educate the public about disability in general. Maureen says “Why shouldn’t everybody get equal opportunities? Our service users are everything to me. To see their progression in learning, having fun, experiencing new things, going to college and leading a ‘normal’ life is the whole reason I am here.” By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume

REVIVE PAVING There is a kind of hush. That’s how a warm still afternoon feels in August. The birds are quiet, many are in moult, replacing old feathers with new, so they hide away quietly in the lush growth. The silence may be broken above by chattering swallows or screaming swifts but many of the latter will be away before the month ends. If there is no sound of breeze in the leaves or traffic or aeroplanes you may hear the hum of bees. For bees you often need to look no further than the back garden, as they forage for nectar in summer flowers. Bumblebees in particular are larger and more noticeable. We have 24 species of bumblebee in this country but you are only likely to see 8 of these locally. Two species have become extinct and many others are in decline. But we do have a recent arrival species, too in the tree bumblebee, which has recently spread from the continent and is often found colonising birdboxes. But bees need our help and we need them too to pollinate our plants. It was Einstein who said “no bees, no people”. Gardens are so important to our wildlife biodiversity. There are 16 million gardens in the UK and the total size is greater than all the nature reserves combined. Gardens can provide homes, feeding areas or just stopovers for wildlife moving through town and countryside. If you have a garden, you can always make some place for nature, however small. A wildlife garden does not have to be untidy. But if you can leave some piles of logs and old branches, even hidden from view, these provide places for insects which in turn provide food for birds. And plants don’t have to native. There are many imports which flower profusely and are loved by our bees and butterflies. Water is key and it brings so much more. Just a simple bird bath is a godsend to many birds especially in a long spell of warm dry weather. The smallest of ponds will harbour newts and frogs and, with some well chosen plants with over-hanging leaves, can attract damselflies. It’s a delight to see bright blue common damselflies and the crimson-coloured common darter zig-zagging over your own little piece of water. A lawn is good but not essential and even the smallest garden can be an asset, in fact its smallness could provide shelter and hence its own micro climate. A few tubs of flowers, perhaps a bird feeder or even a bug hotel can all give benefit. There is a wealth of advice out there : just put “wildlife garden” into your search engine and the advice is overwhelming. Or feel free to contact me and I’d be pleased to put you in touch with some local wildlife gardeners.

Dale Laughlin, 46, has been in the building trade for 30 years and wouldn’t want to be anywhere different. “I wasn’t academic at school. When I was stuck in a classroom as a kid I’d be gazing out the window at the other kids playing sports. I always knew I wanted to work outside. In the building game you get to work in all different environments”. Dale has been a builder for 30 years and has run his own business for 16 of them. Music lover, Dale, is a big fan of The Smiths and likes to run in his spare time. “Self employed people always say they like being their own boss but really the customer is your boss, they are always in charge.” As well as building, Dale’s business now offers a painting and decorating service so that customers don’t have the hassle of shopping around and can stick to one, local company to finish the job. THE FUN WALK TRUST This year’s charity Fun Walk, held on 19th May at Barleylands Farm, was a great success and attracted a record number of walkers nearly 900 people took part! There was a massive BBQ, music courtesy of Gateway FM, and a barn full of stalls – the objective being to raise awareness as well as money.
As of April this year, the Fun Walk has been granted charitable status and has been entered onto the Register of Charities as The Fun Walk Trust (charity no: 1151626). Being a registered charity will allow more companies to support us in the future.
Bonus pot cheques will be distributed to all 2013 participating charities and projects on Friday 13th September. The local press will be present together with our own professional photographer, to give thanks to our generous sponsors and volunteers.
Thanks go to this year’s 2013 bonus pot sponsors for their contribution: Swan Housing Association, NYSE Euronext, c2c Rail Ltd, Veolia
If you would like to join us for next year’s walk, then please phone: 07544324218 or email: funwalk@hotmail.co.uk.
500102
A unique feature of the walk is that generous corporate and individual sponsors donate money into a ‘bonus pot’ which is then distributed to the participating charities and projects, over and above what they raise themselves in sponsorship. Last year’s walk broke all records and raised over £100,000 for 100 good causes.

Arthur Lingard As Billericay sadly loses a pillar of society, we celebrate the life of one of Essex’s most influential head teachers. Arthur Lingard died on 12th June from a heart attack, aged 81. Mr. Lingard served as head teacher for Billericay school for over two decades from 1969 to 1991 and oversaw the great change to comprehensive education, developing the school into one of the largest and most successful in Essex. Sylvia Kent, Author of ‘The Billericay School’ and friend of Arthur Lingard said “He was young to be appointed as a head teacher and throughout his time bought hundreds of people to Billericay. He doubled the school roll in just a few years. He was a tremendous man and a great head teacher”.
Arthur Lingard of Westcliff, who’s love of travel put Billericay School on the map of Europe, was also a member of The Rotary Club. Peter Owen of Billericay Mayflower Rotary Club and governor of Billericay School for the past 36 years knew him well. He said, “Arthur Lingard was a member of our sister club, the Rotary Club of Billericay and through that link did all he could to foster the good name of the school. He was hugely respected in the field of education in general, but Billericay School to him was paramount. He fostered links with schools on the continent and in travel and the partnership he developed with a German school continues today nearly 40 years after it began. The many students for which he was personally responsible will be sad that a man who
influenced them and made a difference to their lives has died.” Sue Hammond current head teacher at Billericay School said “All those at The Billericay School who remember Arthur Lingard are very saddened to hear of his passing.” A memorial service was held at St Saviour’s Church, Kings Road, Westcliff on Monday 29th July and memories have been sent on postcards to the family in celebration of the life of such a great, inspirational man.

BILLERICAY CRICKET CLUB Est. 1875
With the warm hot weather of July the ground at Blunts Wall Road has been baked giving rise to excellent batting conditions with fast outfields. Bowlers have to toil to get rewards. Having started well with the fixed 50 over fixtures the 1st XI are not faring so well in mid season with the time format matches. Teams with only one or two good bowlers are no longer restricted in the number of overs they can bowl and teams beaten easily in the 50 over format have used bowlers for 20 overs or more and the Billericay batsmen have been restrained to scoring less than the benchmark 200 on a number of occasions. Nevertheless they maintain a mid table position and with more 50/50 games scheduled for the last quarter of the season are well placed to consolidate their place in league 2 following promotion last year. The 2nd XI continues to flourish and top their division, with the 3rd and 4th XIs maintaining top 4 spots in their league. On July 28 the club hosts the SNEL 20/20 semi finals and final with the winners going through to the Home Counties regional finals which will also be hosted by Billericay CC on August 11. Spectators are welcome to attend these games, entry is free, so why not enjoy an entertaining day in the sun with a refreshing pint from our well stocked bar? Billericay run 5 Saturday teams, a Sunday team, Vets midweek XI and colts teams from 9 to 17. New members and spectators are always welcome to the Blunts Wall Road ground. Upcoming 1st XI home games are: July 27 Old Southendians, Aug 10 Southend-on-Sea and Sep 7 Gidea Park & Romford. See www.billericaycc.co.uk for more details of joining and to hire the clubhouse for parties or wakes where the views over the Essex countryside and substantial parking provide an excellent setting.
