You Say Goodbye and I Say Hello... Bye For Now!
Greetings Around Towners,
After a year and four months of writing for Around Town Magazine, I am sad to say it’s goodbye for now as I venture off to go and live in Japan for a while (as you do). It has been a pleasure working with the Around Town team and I’ve met and spoken to so many wonderful locals who each have an amazing story to tell. From my time, I’ve learnt that our towns are brimming with incredible places, people and tales from elephants in the high street to paranormal pubs and that the most interesting stories are right on our doorstep. So, thank you all for taking the time to talk to me and I’ll catch you Around Town again in a year or so!
I’m Jo and I’m pleased to say I will be taking over the reins from the lovely Kelly and bringing you all your local news on behalf of Around Town over the coming months. I’ve always loved hunting down a good story, so I’m very excited to be dusting off my pen and notebook and venturing into town to discover many untold tales. ‘The Cook Report’ this month details how local residents are hitting back at the Council, with the Save Billericay from Housing Development group. I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to seeing you ‘Around Town’!

Billericay RFC Promotion is now in sight... At the time of going to press, that fate of Billericay’s first team is not certain. With two games remaining, away at East London followed by Ilford Wanderers at home, Billericay require just two points to secure something that hasn’t been done in seven long years… Promotion out of Essex rugby into the London Leagues. This is will a huge achievement if it happens. Both East London and Ilford Wanderers pose extremely tough opposition
and could easily halt the title celebrations. It would be great to see as many supports from Billericay come down to Willowbrook and support the team as they strive for glory! The club is always a friendly place and very welcoming to any new faces. Plus the bar is always open! Both the Billericay 2nd & 3rd XV’s are also both still in action at this, the business end of the season. They are
through to the Merit League Cup & Shield semi-finals, hoping to make it to finals days which is being held on 12th April at Romford Rugby Club. This has been a truly great season; be sure to catch the full season review next month! Oh, and don’t forgot the Annual BRFC Festival being held Saturday 26th April! Round and round and up and down Hi Around Towners! Here’s your monthly update on my progress with Colin Lott of ‘Drive School of Motoring’ who is taking me through the process of passing my driving test. Over the past month, I have been practising the method of MSPSL (Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed & Look) and employing this method when emerging and turning onto and into roads. This, along with my gear changing and steering are all improving nicely (Colin is pleased I’m not scraping the kerb as much now). I have also learnt how to successfully perform hill starts (both up and down hill) as well as taking on roundabouts and cross roads (it’s been a busy month!) Now, using a combination of MSPSL, whilst changing gear, concentrating on not hitting the kerb (or anything else) along with using clutch control or brake control on roundabouts and cross roads – for some reason my brain just couldn’t get round it all! Colin suggested we stopped the car and we discussed several different scenarios for situations on turning, roundabouts and cross roads, which made it a lot easier for me to get to grips with what I should be doing and when. This involved discussing how long before approaching a junction should the actions be performed, which action should be used (gear change / clutch or brake control) and how these actions may change more than once due to having right of way or traffic approaching after checking it’s safe to proceed. Colin and I have agreed it’s time to take stock of everything I’ve learnt over the past 2 months and reflect on how far I’ve come in such a short period, but also concentrate on getting better at using all the actions together. I didn’t anticipate how daunting this would be, but I’m determined to crack it. Colin’s patience and advice have aided me exceptionally well and I am confident it’ll be no time at all until I’m out on my own. Until next month – beep beep!

Do you know the size of your pension pot?
Call me on 07919 241386 Visit www.bwmltd.org or email ian.nicholson@bwmltd.org
Consolidating your pensions could make financial sense It’s essential that you regularly review all your retirement plans, to make sure you know what you’ll get when you retire. If you don’t, you could be: • Paying more charges than you need to. • Investing in funds that don’t suit your goals or attitude to risk. • Paying less than you need to fund your retirement, as it’s difficult to work out what you’ll get if your pensions are paid from several pots. It’s never too late to consolidate your pensions and be able to make better plans for your retirement. Call me now and talk to the experts about the best way forward for you. The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.
Finance Matters by Ian Nicholson DipFA Beaulieu Wealth Management Ltd This is the first of what will be regular articles in Around Town Magazine, covering all aspects of Financial Planning. From arranging mortgages, sorting out Life Assurance, planning to save for the future, or ensuring that your Pension is invested in the right areas. I’m a fully qualified Financial Adviser who lives in Billericay and has been advising clients on all aspects of their financial affairs for over 25 years. (Though that doesn’t make me as old as it sounds!). They may not be the sort of subjects that you think about every day, but part of what I do for clients is take away the worry of dealing with them on a day to day basis by setting things in place and reviewing them regularly. My business has always been based around giving quality face to face advice to clients on a regular basis. Too many people have taken out plans/policies that either don’t provide what they think they do, or aren’t even suitable in the first place. The worst problem is that most people don’t even know what they have. I can help with that, and ensure that whatever you do is right for you now and in the future. As you’re reading this we’re now in April and past the deadline for contributing into an Individual Savings Account (ISA) for the year ending 5th April 2014.
This can either be: • £11,880 into a stocks and shares ISA • Up to £5,940 into a cash ISA and the balance into stocks and shares ISA A cash ISA is basically a bank or building society deposit account (that is tax free). This should be for shorter term savings A stocks and shares ISA is for longer term savings (5 years plus) and is invested in various areas, such as Equities, Property Funds and other assorted investments. These funds are generally professionally managed, aiming to produce above inflation growth over the years. Whatever you decide it always pays to get advice. In the coming months I’d love to cover areas of Finance that you are interested in. So if you’d like me to discuss any aspects of Investments, Pensions, Life Assurance, Mortgages etc, or would like to speak to me about a specific matter then please contact me (details below). Thanks for reading and see you next Month: Mob: 07919 241386 E-mail ian.nicholson@bwmltd.org Twitter @BWMLimited Web: www.BWMltd.org The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.
If you’ve used up your allowance for the year (£11,520) then well done. If not well unfortunately it’s too late for 2014, but why not invest now for 2015? ISA’s are tax free investments. Ideal for saving either in lump sums or regular monthly payments. The yearly amount that can be paid into an ISA for 2014/2015 is £11,880 per person.

A VIEW FROM THE CHURCH
Easter: A Story Of Love, Sacrifice And Hope I love Easter Sunday. It is THE most significant day in the Christian calendar and tells one of the most compelling stories ever told: God’s story! It’s the day we celebrate the ultimate triumph of good over evil, as God demonstrates his victory over death. But the resurrection of Jesus isn’t just a story that sits 2,000 years ago in history. It changes the way we live our lives today: it transforms the darkest of situations and gives hope for even the most broken of people. It’s the ultimate story of love and forgiveness.
of whatever dirt or darkness is in your life, you can know the immeasurable, matchless love of Jesus.
One of the most famous of all Bible verses is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” And, believe it or not, this simple verse reveals three wonderful, amazing, life-changing truths of the Christian faith: Love, Sacrifice and Hope.
2. An Astonishing Sacrifice: In His thirty-three years of life on earth, Jesus lived a life full of love and compassion for men, women, and children. But even after He had performed miracles and clearly shown that He was God in human form, His mission had not been fully accomplished. Jesus’ astonishing sacrifice on the cross reveals His great love for you and shows how completely He understands you, how fully He feels your shame, pain and hurt, your disappointment, your discouragement and distress. He understands it all and longs to forgive, to free you, to lift you up and turn you around because He took all of that - every bit of it - when He went to the cross. It was nailed there with Him and died there with Him. So that you could be free of it all.
1. An Immeasurable Love: Jesus came to this earth because of love. He lived a life of love. He came with a clear mission: to seek and to save what was lost. The Bible teaches that we are separated from God because of our rejection of him and this damages relationships, divides families and causes so many problems in our world today. No matter what you’ve done, no matter how you feel, regardless
3. An Enduring Hope: To all of Jesus’ family, friends and followers, it was over. They were devastated. How could the one they thought was the Saviour of the world be gone? They had had such high hopes, but now their Lord was dead, wrapped in grave cloths and buried in an ugly, barren, cold stone tomb. But Jesus’ story did not end there, the Bible teaches us, and historians record, that Jesus
rose from the dead and was seen by more than 500 people and this gives us an enduring hope that death is not the end but only the beginning. In fact, Jesus’ resurrection completes the message of John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” May I encourage you to journey through Holy Week this year? From the: Praise of Palm Sunday; Poignancy of Maundy Thursday; Sorrow of Good Friday and the Joy of Celebration on Easter Sunday. May I extend an invitation to join with us here at Emmanuel or another of the many great churches in Billericay? May God’s richest blessing be upon you during these last days of Lent as we prepare to celebrate God’s immeasurable love, His astonishing sacrifice and His enduring hope.

Russell and Phil have been running Powermax for seven years. The company, based in Southend Road, Billericay, offer lawnmowers and garden equipment and services. The company pride themselves on quick turnaround times and offer a free collection and delivery service.
Russell advised it is Phil’s great technical expertise and relationship with customers that keeps them coming back. ‘Phil’s great with people - the customers love him’. Phil, 23, the company’s technical engineer, has been repairing gardening equipment for over five years and advised
there is no job too difficult, ‘If we can’t source the missing parts, I can make them’. In their spare time, Russell enjoys playing golf, and Phil, military re-enactment. Phil said, ‘It’s amazing some of the stories you hear from the veterans, I really enjoy it’.

oenix Fencin g h P The time of change. If you like walking in the woods and the wider countryside that’s something that comes to mind when you describe April. At the start of the month the woods are transparent and you can see long distances through the bare boughs and admire the crooked shapes of trunks and branches. By the time April ends, the branches see less of the woods and but much more of bright fresh greens of newly-emerged leaves.

It’s good to be in our local woods out at all times in April to see how nature changes. For the bird-watcher, the earlier in the day the better, as the birds are much more active then. Tits sing loudly and chase each other through the trees as they claim their partners, territories and nest holes. The drums of woodpeckers echo through the woods, as do their ‘pick’ calls and harsh shrill chattering as they also mark their patch for the breeding season. Whilst the trees are bare, the woodpeckers can be seen easily and sometimes you might see a profile of one in high in a tree silhouetted against the sky. As the month progresses, they are more hidden, excavating their holes and if you pause whilst walking in a wood, you might hear one tapping away deep in a thick branch or trunk. The song in the woods becomes more varied as blackcaps and other warblers arrive for the spring. Butterflies emerge too, although with the mild March this year, many of us have already seen several species, including the comma, with its ragged wings, the peacock with the patterns of purple eyes on the wings and bright yellow brimstones. A late April favourite is the orange-tip, a beautiful white butterfly although only the male has the orange-tipped wings as its name suggests. It often turns up in gardens as it patrols the area looking for females. Essex has many renowned bluebell woods and the climate this year means we can expect to see these magnificent displays before the month ends. Our local woods comprise mainly of oak, hornbeam and sweet chestnut, having been grown many years ago for coppicing to provide a sustainable source of wood. Some woods evolved for a different purpose and Thorndon Country Park is an example of a deer park where many trees were pollarded to keep the new shoots out of reach of nibbling mouths. The woods here include beech and pine plantations. I went recently to Thorndon to look for nuthatches, a rare bird around the Billericay and Stock area, but which we hope will increase as they are now returning to other parts of the county where they have been absent. Last year a pair appeared in Mill Meadows but didn’t stay to breed – perhaps this will be the year?

Planned Urbanisation of Billericay’s Green Belt Causes Outcry In Residents Basildon Council’s plans to develop up to 7% of the district’s green belt, including up to 2,500 houses in Billericay, has sparked outcry in a number of Billericay residents. The Basildon 2031 Local Plan Core Strategy, which plans to develop housing in the Outwood Common and surrounding areas, has raised concern in a number of residents, who are worried about the impact of the development on rural areas, traffic congestion and demand on public services. The plan sets aside land for housing development and employment use, which would see the building of 16,000 homes and commercial areas in the Basildon Council district by 2031, including the additional 2,500 houses in Billericay. This includes both development on green belt land and urban areas. The aim of the scheme is to generate growth in the area, and provide employment and affordable housing opportunities to the increasing population. The plans have sparked worry in residents, who feel they have not been fully consulted on the proposals. The Save Billericay from Housing Development social networking group, which has over 370 members, draws together their concerns. Mike Andrews, Billericay resident and co-founder of the group said, ‘Our concerns relate to many issues, the loss of the
green belt, the unsuitable local infrastructure, lanes not roads, Basildon Hospital in special measures, no seats on trains at rush hour even today, high risk flood area, impact on wildlife, the list goes on.’ The group encourages members to make known to the council their views by responding to the public consultation on the plan. Residents can voice their opinions via Basildon Council’s online portal and by signing an online petition, which attracted over 400 signatures in just the first four days of opening. A meeting held by Billericay Town Council on 6 March, to agree a combined response to the consultation, resulted in abandonment when 280 residents turned up to dispute the proposals. At the time of going to press, this meeting was re-scheduled for 19 March, in a bigger venue, to accommodate the ever-growing number of people who wish to make known their objections. Despite the group’s disappointment in the low provision of information regarding the developments, and for what they feel is a lack of support from their local MP, they remain determined to make their voice heard. Mike Andrews said, ‘In the short term we are focussed on the Town Council Meeting and getting our responses to the consultation
to Basildon Council by the deadline. We have received no practical support from our MP despite the Government being vocal about protecting the Green Belt when it suits them’. The group’s lobbying has not passed by without success, with the council agreeing to extend the consultation on the plans from 17 March to 1 April. Mike added ‘Four weeks ago we were 8 people in a neighbour’s front room… 5 days after that 280 people at the Town Council meeting. Support is growing throughout Billericay and South Green’. For more information regarding the Basildon 2031 Local Plan Core Strategy, visit www. basildon.gov.uk/basildon2031. BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Hello there! Lions Club members were hard at work in the high street on March 8th making their annual collection on behalf of Marie Curie nurses. They managed to raise nearly £600 on the day which will go directly to The Marie Curie Foundation. Many thanks to all those who supported us but don’t forget, there are still special collection boxes around the town, so there is still a chance for you to support this very worthwhile charity. Among other donations decided last month, was one towards Basildon Cardio Thoracic Centre. This was a figure of £1100, to pay for the necessary software, printer and supply of materials, to provide patients with a card that they could carry identifying their condition and cardiac history. Sadly this is not funded by the NHS, but is considered a very useful addition by the staff concerned, for the benefit of all cardiac outpatients. We are pleased to confirm that our Big Band Night on Saturday, May 24th, will be held at The Emmanuel Church in Laindon Road. Tickets are priced at £12 per person in advance or £15 at the door, so please book early to avoid disappointment! The Ken Turner Big Band will be playing on an evening devoted to ‘Remembering Legends’, with music from the era of Nelson Riddle, Glen Miller and Duke Ellington. There will be a licensed bar as usual and profits from the night will go to J’s Hospice in Great Baddow. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
Our club was deeply shocked and saddened to learn on 6 March that our long standing member, friend and fireworks legend, Adam Hills died suddenly aged 44. Adam was a big bear of a man who was passionate about life and helping others and his hulking physique was matched by a big heart. Adam spoke his mind plainly and didn’t suffer fools gladly but was a very kind bloke too. When community service business was discussed at meetings he was always the guy that argued donation amounts up to try and get a local good cause as much money as possible. He had a wicked sense of humour and was a revered practical joker as anyone who had been on the end of one his ruses will tell you. Adam LOVED fireworks (and bangers!) and was Event Director of our Billericay display no less than SEVEN times. He simply loved the event and it is truly inconceivable that he will not be a part of our future events. Adam also had many friends at Billericay Boxing Club where he was helping to train the next generation. A proud family man, our deepest condolences go to Carol and the rest of the family. You are deeply missed big man.
