The Fun Walk Trust(Registered Charity number: 1151626) organises the whole event. Last year, over 100 local causes and charities raised £110,000 – bringing the total raised by the Fun Walk to over £844,000 since its inception in 2002. Many local charities now see this as their main fundraising event of the year.
The Fun Walk this year will take place on Sunday 21st May, once again at Barleylands Farm.
A unique feature of the Walk is that, because of the generosity of corporate and individual sponsors, each charity and good cause will receive a bonus over and above what they raise themselves. In 2016 for example, for every £100 raised in sponsorship, £53 was added by way of a bonus.
As before, the committee of
This year’s ‘bonus pot’ is as
John Baron Conservative Parliamentary MP For Basildon and Billericay
strong as ever, with sponsors already pledging over £32,000. This amount looks set to rise, as some have yet to decide how much they will contribute. Sponsors so far are: Swan Housing Association, c2c Rail Ltd, Butyl Products Ltd, Hallmark Care Homes, Private Ambulance Services Ltd and MacDonald’s. Our thanks go to Barleylands Farm for hosting the event. If you know of a project that would benefit, then do come and join in – it is not too late to register. For more information please contact the Walk on 07544 324 218 or on funwalk@ hotmail.co.uk – you will then be sent a Factsheet and registration forms. More information is available on the website – www. thefunwalktrust.co.uk.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company
policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Billericay, Ingatestone, Ramsden &
Stock and manager Chris Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Flat Roofing Guaranteed for Life Advertorial
Around 70% of homes in the UK incorporate a mineral felt flat roof. Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home. A failing roof & the warning signs - Look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. Felt will attract moss and algae further degrading the roof surface.
IMPORTANT: - ALL PROPERTY OWNERS PLEASE BE AWARE When a flat roof is replaced there are Part L Building Regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. Please call for free information regarding the Part L Law. The home-owner should also be made aware that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old. In 1999, High-Tech Roofing first introduced the most advanced flat roof technology to the

Protan is predominantly an architect-specified roofing system, winning many awards serving the very competitive commercial sector.

There were, and stmas remember Day - ‘Familyin Communion’ at 10.00am are, many ignorant and untruthful viewpoints expressed - on both sides of the debate - and there are some politicians whose opinions turn my stomach.
Many in our town voted for Brexit and others voted to remain. That means the Win/Lose and Brexit/Remain divide runs right through us - separating young and old and families and friends alike. However, just because someone voted the opposite way to you, doesn’t mean they were ignorant or politically naïve. Voting, for many, wasn’t an easy decision. Some people voted to remain for economical reasons whilst others chose Brexit for constitutional reasons. Some of you will be feeling victorious and others unsettled. Some of you will be feeling quite optimistic, others pessimistic. Some of you will feel as though you belong, others will feel rejected. Whilst we may have voted to leave the EU we’ve still got to work out what kind of United Kingdom we want to become and the kind of morals, values and ethics we want to guide us. This historic moment is a time to speak to each other about what we want our society
www.billericaychurches.org
to be. This is not a conversation for our leaders alone, nor is it the exclusive possession of those who voted to Brexit in the referendum campaign. It is for every person in the UK to make a contribution. Christians are commanded in the Bible to ‘pray for all who have authority, that we may live peaceful lives’. Churches are praying for the Prime Minister, her Cabinet, and all those involved in the negotiations around our withdrawal from the EU in the coming months. We pray that God would give His wisdom to those He has given authority and influence and we pray for the ‘common good’ of our community, constituency and nation and that the outcomes of the negotiations would be fair and just for everyone. Christians have a vital contribution to make to these conversations as we speak out for a society that upholds freedom, maintains justice and pursues truth as we pursue the difficult task of loving our neighbour as ourselves. We share the prime minister’s desire for a fairer society for all and should look forward to engaging in that conversation in the months ahead. Remember, even in our uncertainty, we believe and trust in a King who rules the nations. Let’s demonstrate that as we pray for each other and for our leaders both national and international. To be living at such a time as this is, surely, a significant opportunity for Christian’s to offer a distinctively different way of living for those who have lost hope and confidence in Westminster by reminding them of the hope and confidence we can have in the Lord Jesus, who is: ‘The same yesterday, today and forever.’ Let’s deliberately and positively model loving our neighbours, honouring our leaders and serving others. May God’s richest blessing be upon you in these times of uncertainty. revpacman.wordpress.com paul@billericaychurches.org @revPACman

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB A whole range of good causes locally, nationally and internationally are to benefit from donations made in recent weeks by Billericay Mayflower Rotarians. More than £12,000 has been donated thanks to the generosity of Billericay families supporting the club’s major events headed by the December Christmas Market. President Sri Srivastava said: “We could not support these worthy causes without the help and goodwill of the people of Billericay.” Part of the money is aimed at helping young people like the £1,000 towards a new sensory room at Little Havens children’s hospice, £1,500 for Thriftwood College special students preparing for the world of work, £1,000 for Hope and Homes for Children, almost £500 towards a global Rotary grant for early childhood development and £250 for Amy’s Angels. Support for those striving to improve health has seen £1,200 for End Polio Now, a worldwide campaign flagshipped by Rotary with the support of the World Health Organisation and the Bill Gates organisation. Another £1,000 each has gone for specialist screens at St Luke’s Hospice and Roll Out the Barrel water programme easing the life of African villagers. Further donations have gone to Friends of Lake Meadows, Basildon Saturday Club and a Chemistry at Work event. The club’s latest fund-raising event , a quiz brought in £1,100 for Macmillan Nurses. Rotary Foundation the world’s biggest privately run charity providing education and aid thanks to contributions from clubs globally also benefits from Mayflower’s £3,750.
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB
In March this year the Lions Clubs in East Anglia District chose a Billericay Lion, Derek Prior, for the honour of becoming District Governor for the year from 1st July. He will be responsible not just for the 1200 Lions and 60 clubs in East Anglia but will also be a part of the Council of 12 Governors from all over The British Isles who are in charge of all of England Scotland and Wales, with over 800 clubs and 12,500 members. Congratulations to Derek – we wish you a very successful year. Tickets are now on sale for our fundraising concert on Saturday evening 10th June to be performed by the Harmonie Concert Band. Entitled ‘Out Of This World’, it will feature themes from favourite sci-fi productions, big band, pop and classical music. The venue is the Mayflower school hall in Stock Road Billericay and tickets cost £12.
Preparations continue apace for our annual beer festival at the Billericay Football Club, to be held on the weekend of 23rd/25th June. Make a note in your diary not to miss this popular local event. Sponsorship is available for individual barrels of beer at £50 per barrel, with the sponsor’s name featuring on the barrel, in the leaflets and on our website. If you’d like to sponsor a barrel please see the contact details on our website. For details of Lions events or if you are interested in joining, please have a look at our website www.billericaylions.com
Looking forward, we are back into the regular routine of our monthly social/ sports events and reviewing donation requests. As ever, we are looking to attract new members who are up for a bit of fun and looking to do some extra-ordinary things - things which you would not typically arrange with your normal mates! Check us out at www.facebook.com/billericayroundtable and www.billericayroundtable.co.uk or contact us directly on bepartofit@ billericayroundtable.co.uk. We would also really like to hear about any special causes which we might be able to offer monetary support for – no matter how small or large the value, we treat all cases individually and in confidence. Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 The walk is undulating, through oak and birch, sometimes opening out to spreads of restored heathland. We are at Lingwood Common, which is within a mosaic of nature reserves and wildlife sites collectively known as Danbury Ridge and featuring ancient woodlands, wildflower meadows, heaths, lowland raised bogs and streams. This area was immortalised in the book ‘The Hill of Summer’ by J A Baker. Written in the early 60’s, the book includes sightings of wildlife long gone from the area: Red Squirrels, Common Redstarts and Hawfinches. But Danbury Ridge still has much to credit it. As we walked past reams of Bluebells we heard Willow Warblers and Nightingales, rare now in South Essex, singing in the denser valleys. A Lesser Spotted Woodpecker called from high in the trees but we couldn’t locate it: the name is due to its smaller size but could also mean that it is less often seen. Neither did we find any of the Adders which bathe on the heath edges although they are easily missed, being so well camouflaged against dead bracken. Alerted by a rustle in dead leaves under low stems of bramble we glimpse small dark brown furry bodies chasing each other rapidly through the dead leaves. These were probably Bank Voles, which are more likely to be found in woods than their cousins, the Field Voles.

Our explorations took us east to Pheasant House Farm which has nearly 40 acres of meadow grazed by cattle and rich enough to house hundreds of butterflies in July and to provide hunting grounds for Tawny Owls and Kestrels that dwell in the nestboxes. The farm has been restored as a working asset by Essex Wildlife Trust, with dilapidated buildings and fences removed. Nearly 2,000 hedgerows trees have been planted here to link the surrounding woodlands. Nearby is Woodham Walter, with its steep slopes and Sessile Oaks in some small parts being visually reminiscent of Welsh hanging oakwoods. We end at Danbury Common where more Nightingales greet us. One sings very obligingly from the lower branches of a nearby oak sapling, giving us a perfect view. It obviously hadn’t read the books that describe it as a shy and skulking bird. We are grateful for that, as we are for the work of Essex Wildlife Trust, the National Trust and the volunteers in the local communities that make this such a special area.

wallet workout Go grab your purse or wallet. You need it next to you during the five minutes it’ll take you to read this. However, it should be lucrative. Our wallets are a treasure trove of financial information. One of my party tricks is to take a look at someone’s and save them £100s in minutes – and now I want to do it for you. This is my wallet workout, a self-inspection of contents to save you cash. 1. Pull out your debit card – do you have a winner? A debit card reveals where you bank; and mistakes there are a plenty. Do you pay a monthly fee? If so, work out its annual cost (£15/month = £180) and then ask yourself if the ‘extras’ the bank gives are worth this. If not, cancel it. Plus, if you were flogged it or told you had to have it, you may be able to reclaim all packaged bank account fees (see www.mse.me/reclaimpackagefees). Does your bank make you happy? If not, then www.FirstDirect.com is worth considering switching to. It’s a fee-free account (as long as you pay in £1,000 a month), pays switchers £100 and has a linked 6% savings account. It’s won every service poll I’ve ever done, with 92% of its customers rating it ‘great’. Or www.Co-operativeBank.co.uk is giving £150, plus up to £5.50 if you qualify for its Everyday Rewards scheme, and 70% of its customers rate it ‘great’. Are you overdrawn? Debit cards can be debt cards too, and sometimes costlier than credit. For small overdrafts, you can switch again to www.FirstDirect.com which gives a £250 0% overdraft, and the £100 switch bonus will help clear some of it. Or the www.Nationwide. co.uk FlexDirect gives a 0% overdraft for the first 12 months. For larger amounts, you can use special 0% credit cards to clear it - see www.mse.me/moneytransfers
Do you have savings? If so, use your bank account to max the interest, as some now pay by far the highest interest on savings. The top picks are www.Santander.co.uk’s 123, which pays 3% on up to £20,000 and www. LloydsBank.com’s ClubLloyds, which pays 4% on £4,000-£5,000. There’s also the www.Tsb. co.uk Classic Plus, which pays 5% on up to £2,000, plus up to £5-a-month cashback on contactless purchases. 2. Pull out your photo driving licence – is it valid? A whopping 2.2 million licences have a picture that’s out of date. To check yours, look at section 4b on your photo card licence, it’ll show the expiry date. If you don’t and it’s expired, you risk a fine of up to £1,000. You can renew it online at www.gov.uk/renewdriving-licence or at the post office.
“...YOU’LL RISK A FINE OF UP TO £1,000” 3. Got a credit card(s) that you pay interest on? STOP It’s possible to save £100s or even £1,000s a year by getting a 0% balance transfer credit card – that’s where the new card pays off debt on old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. This means more of your repayments clear the actual debt rather than just paying the interest, making you debt-free quicker. There’s up to 40 months 0% available with a fee, or 24 months 0% fee-free. My full best balance transfers guide at www. moneysavingexpert.com/bts includes a free eligibility calculator which gives card-by-card odds of which you’re most likely to get – so you can home in on your winner. Savings can be huge, as Victoria tweeted
me: “I got my fiancé to transfer his credit card balances to a 0%, saved £1,500 interest.” 4. Do you have a donor card? It’s a big decision, but joining the Organ Donor Register could mean you save or improve up to nine lives. If it’s for you, sign up at www. organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23. 5. Got a credit card and always repay in full? Make it PAY YOU Every time you use a card, the retailer pays the card firm a transaction fee. With a cashback card, you effectively get this put back in your pocket. As new regulations have cut these fees recently, cashback’s been cut too, yet Amex cards are mostly exempted, so still pay a good whack. The fee-free www.AmericanExpress.com Everyday pays 5% cashback (max £100) for the first three months, then tiered up to 1.25% after. The best non-Amex ishttp:// money.asda.com Mastercard which pays 0.5% cashback (1% in Asda). As Anna tweeted me: “@MartinSLewisGlad I read about Amex cashback card: I’ll get over £200 paid.” Yet only do this if you’ll set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month or you’ll pay 22.9% (Amex) or 18.9% (Asda) rep APR interest, which more than wipes the cashback gain. 6.Sign up for a my Waitrose card for FREE daily tea and coffee Get the www.waitrose.com loyalty card –
martin l e w IS Money Saving Expert
then in most stores you can get a totally free takeaway hot drink, every day from the selfservice machine without buying anything. 7. Not got a credit card…? You’re less protected Pay using a credit card and you get extra protection under the ‘Section 75 law’ – which means buy something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card, and pay for any of it (even 1p) on it, and the card firm’s jointly liable with the retailer for the entire amount. This get-out-of-jail-free card is hugely powerful if the retailer goes bust or won’t play fair, as Michelle found. She tweeted: “Successful Section 75 credit card claim, refunded £125 for non-delivery of phone order, used template on your website, thanks.” PS: If you’ve been burnt with credit cards in the past, or have little financial discipline, then ignore this point. Better safe than sorry. Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. TriaThlon
After completing a 1 mile swim, a 25 mile bike ride or a 6.2 mile run, I am certain that a great sense of achievement would overcome any feelings of exhaustion or tiredness. The ultimate test in stamina would be completing all three of these back to back. Welcome to the world of Triathlon!
The famous London Marathon sends more and more people all over Essex to the streets, stepping up their training in preparation for the great event. However, Triathlon is fast becoming the new way to test your stamina and being used all the time to raise money for charities in need. My first exposure to the world of Triathlon was while watching the Sydney Olympics in 2000, a number of people plunged into Sydney harbour with the Opera house glistening in the background, they were starting the first leg of the gruelling event. After the swim a commentator then said “now for the 25 mile bike ride”, my eyebrows immediately rose, but nearly entered a state of shock when I realised it climaxed with a 6 mile run. Now, 15 years later, I can totally see that if you are ready to test yourself to limit that Triathlon not only offers you variety, but pushes your entire body to the maximum. There are people that train individually for such an event and produce great results. However, there is a club in Essex that are tapping into those that like to train within a group of people and also those who thrive the competitive element of sport and wish to compete against and train with peers and friends regularly. The East Essex Triathlon Club based just down the A127 in Rayleigh has been going for many years and they are the club to join if you are looking to train for events throughout the year in Essex. They train every week, Saturday morning they do a long run and on Sunday morning they hit the roads of Essex on their bikes, this all starts from the Market Car Park in Rayleigh. During the week they have Tuesday night track sessions
at the Basildon Sporting Village as well as Monday night swimming sessions at Runnymede pool Castle Point and Thursday night at the Basildon Sporting Village again. I have been speaking to Zena, a member of the club about Triathlon and its growing popularity. It seems as though Triathlon is now becoming the ultimate challenge, even rivalling marathons and half marathons? Why is popularity increasing? More generations of 40+ adults are still enjoying sport. Some may have come from other sports such as athletics or swimming and realise they can still be competitive at triathlon, which celebrates winners from age groups in 5 year gaps. Many people start triathlon just for a one off event but stay because they find it a friendly inclusive sport. We have also had Olympic and world championship success with the likes of the Brownlee brothers and Chrissie Wellington which has increased the popularity too. London 2012 no doubt has had a big impact, especially the success of the Brownlee brothers as you have mentioned. With Rio looming, what can we expect from East Essex Club to get more youngsters taking an interest and giving it a go? We have regular training sessions for any young people wishing to take part in triathlon and also host a number of events each year including the Go-Tri series, which provides a short, low key taster event at Basildon Sporting Village (for adults and children) and can be entered on the day! The East Essex Club offers a chance to train with Triathlon enthusiasts for either a one off challenge or to explore your hobby of competitive running, swimming and biking. The price of annual membership is £33 for adults and £12 for children and with 300 members from 8-80, the club is going from strength to strength. Fling Festival 2017
Fling Festival returns to Hylands Park, Chelmsford on Saturday 1 July, 2017.
The Fling is like no other, curated purely for adults with curiosity encouraged, and featuring a diverse mix of entertainment including music, comedy, theatre, cabaret, crafts, burlesque, curious sideshows, food, drinkand more. This year’s festival includes a main stage headline performance from legendary British band, The Blockheads, who are bestknown for their hits singles, recorded with original lead singer Ian Dury; Billericay Dickie, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Reasons to be Cheerful Part 3, plus their hugely successful Number One song, Hit Me with Your Rhythm Stick. Other headline performances includea very special spoken word set from the original punk poet, the Bard of Salford, Dr John Cooper Clarke. Not only is he adored across Europe as an elder statesman of subversive art but, also proves his relevance is as strong today with regularly features on TV shows Have I Got News For You, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Would I Lie To You. Headlining this year’s comedy stage is the charismatic motor-mouth, Seann Walsh. Regarded as one of the most
exciting new acts on the circuit who’s assured delivery and self-depreciating silliness has won over critics, promoters and audiences up and down the country and on TV. On top of this there is a World Exclusive BBC 6 Music DJ battle with Steve Lamacq Vs Shaun Keaveny, the return of the award winning Cabaret host, Dusty Limits, and performances from the world of Cirque du Soleil. And not forgetting the usual Fling favourites; Silent Disco, Horse World, Bollywood tent, Fire Garden and the craft making Rubbish to Treasure. This year promises to be the best yet with more bars, more walkabout fun, and more surprises lined up to satisfy, entertain and wow the crowds. VIP, Tier 1 and Tier 2 have sold out. The last & final tier is currently on sale. For up-to-date festival information, including exciting announcements coming up over the next few weeks please visit the official website www.FlingFestival.com, or follow the social media pages, facebook.com/flingfestival, twitter.com/flingfestival
The Fling Festival is produced by Chelmsford City Council Events and Engagement Team with support from Essex & Suffolk Water..
