Summer is on its way with The Friends of Lake Meadows Back in February 2013, a group of enthusiastic Billericay residents formed a new society, The Friends of Lake Meadows. This voluntary organisation works with Basildon Borough Council, Billericay Town Council and the Billericay community to promote public interest in the park, co-ordinate improvement projects and host special events for residents throughout the year. Since the society began, The Friends of Lake Meadows has endeavoured to promote public awareness of the park by organising events for local residents. Group member Alison Bacon said ‘All our members have great skills and talents that we use to make the park a nicer place for residents to visit.’ Alison joined the society in autumn last year after arranging ‘Bark in the Park’, the first ever dog show to be held at Lake Meadows. A second ‘Bark in the Park’ will follow in September. Several more events are also planned to encourage residents to visit the park and enjoy its natural beauty, with the Seasonsthemed Grand Photography Competition due to announce its winner by the end of June and a Jazz evening on
10
12th July. The Friends of Lake Meadows also look to involve other local groups in their activities, with the local Cubs and Scouts groups recently assisting with several gardening projects. The group will also be supporting Fun in the Park 2014, an afternoon of family fun featuring music, giant inflatables, a classic car show and games for children and adults, on Sunday 29th June. Entry is free and the event runs from 12.30pm to 4.30pm. As well as organising events, the society is also passionate about the park’s conservation. Behind the tennis courts by the Lake Avenue entrance is a 1.2 acre ancient woodland believed to have once been connected to Norsey Woods. The Friends of Lake Meadows have targeted this area for improvement, by laying better paths, cutting back foliage to improve access and clearing the ditches to improve drainage to this area and the rest of the park. Alison said, ‘Our gardening group meet on the first and third Tuesday and Thursday of every month. They have several exciting projects in the pipeline at the moment, including building
the first sensory garden in the local area’. The society are also organising several tree carvings, turning woodland area near the café into dragons, magicians and wizards, with storytelling sessions to be arranged for local schoolchildren. While the society continues to organise events and take on more conservation projects, it also continues to grow. Membership is open to the public and costs just £5.00 a year. Alison said ‘It is a really nice friendly bunch of people, you can help out as little or as much as you would like and everyone is welcome’. For further information on The Friends of Lake Meadows and details on how to join, please visit www.lakemeadows.org. uk or search ‘Friends of Lake Meadows’ on Facebook.

‘Crossings, Awareness.. STOP!’ Hi Around Towners! Here’s your monthly update on my progress with Colin Lott of ‘Drive School of Motoring’ who is taking me through the process of passing my driving test. This month, Colin and I have managed more frequent lessons, which has really helped me move forward with my progress. I found the previous month far more difficult as we were having big gaps between lessons. We have made progress on roundabouts, cross roads and driving with traffic around Billericay, Laindon and Basildon, including main roundabouts near the A127 off Laindon High Road, which I completed really well. One thing to work on is slowing down on approach to roundabout and getting the speed back up once coming off and continuing on the road, but this will improve and has already got better this month. We have also looked at the 5 main types of pedestrian crossings: Zebra, Pelican, Puffin, Toucan and Equestrian – and discussed the differences between them, including a couple of handy tips to remember which is which. For example: Toucan Crossing is for pedestrians and cyclists, because ‘TWO CAN’ cross. And a Puffin Crossing can be remembered by Pedestrian User-Friendly Intelligent Crossing. Whilst learning these handy hints and tips, it has improved my awareness and reactions to potential hazards, road signs and markings, speed limits, pedestrians and much more. This included my first emergency stop, which, according to Colin, didn’t need a second attempt – it was spot on! Woo! Until next time – drive safe

A VIEW FROM THE CHURCH
The Ten Commandments: Life Transforming Rules? Last month, in my article on the film Noah starring Russell Crowe, I suggested that God has a plan for the way we should live our lives, which can be found in the Ten Commandments. How many of these can you name? You can find them in the Old Testament book of Exodus, chapter 20, if you can’t remember them all! Those who dislike religion often portray the Christian faith as an unattractive series of gloomy commands, as if God had given the Ten Commandments to depress and terrify His people. But it’s not that way at all. Unlike so many of the laws in the ancient world, these commandments are not conditional threats: “Do this or else you’re in deep trouble!” They simply lay out a way of living that enhances people’s lives and brings peace, hope and purpose. Faith doesn’t have to be complicated and difficult. That’s because all of the Ten Commandments are designed to set people free and give: freedom from a false idea of God; freedom from violence in thought or in action; freedom from the mistakes of the past;
freedom for justice; and freedom for love. Which society, if they were to live by these ten simple guidelines, couldn’t help but to live in harmony and peace and be a blessing to others? The people of the Old Testament, however, as we know in our own lives, struggled to live by the letter of the law because what should have been Life Transforming Rules became a millstone - which is why, in the New Testament (Acts chapter 2) the Holy Spirit of God was given to enable Christians to follow and serve God in a way they wouldn’t be able to do on their own and this is why the worldwide church celebrates Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit to the church, on Sunday 8 June. Charles Spurgeon, the great Baptist preacher of the 18th Century, was once asked why he preached on the need for more of the Holy Spirit, his response was simple: “Because I leak!” All of us, it seems to me, need more of God’s power in our lives to live God’s way. And it is this daily presence of the Holy Spirit that ensures that our Christian faith won’t be
short lived but will sustain us, through joy and sorrow, for the rest of our lives. My experience has been that whenever I have started to become serious with God, whenever I have started to take God up on his promises, whenever I get down on my knees and expect God to show up in my life - things start to happen. God never lets anyone down who is searching for him and are seeking a refreshing experience of the Transforming Rule of the Holy Spirit in their life. Can I encourage you to attend one of our great churches here in Billericay this Pentecost? Who knows, it might be a life-changing experience for you. With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name

Call me on 07919 241386 Visit www.bwmltd.org or email ian.nicholson@bwmltd.org
Consolidating your pensions could make financial sense It’s essential that you regularly review all your retirement plans, to make sure you know what you’ll get when you retire. If you don’t, you could be: • Paying more charges than you need to. • Investing in funds that don’t suit your goals or attitude to risk. • Paying less than you need to fund your retirement, as it’s difficult to work out what you’ll get if your pensions are paid from several pots. It’s never too late to consolidate your pensions and be able to make better plans for your retirement. Call me now and talk to the experts about the best way forward for you. The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.
Finance Matters by Ian Nicholson DipFA Beaulieu Wealth Management Ltd Finance Matters This month I’ve been asked to concentrate on the merits and benefits of protecting yourself and your families against the hardships caused by Death, Disability or ill health. It’s always a difficult subject to cover as understandably people don’t like to talk about, or even think about the consequences for their families of the worst happening. However it is a vitally important area, and one that if set up correctly and reviewed regularly can ensure that you will never have to worry if the worst happens. Lets look at the different types of Protection Insurance you can take out to cover yourself: Life Insurance This is the foundation of any protection portfolio. Life Assurance will pay out in the event of your death, usually within a specific term (ie 25 years if you’re protecting your mortgage). You should always ensure that any debts you have are covered. As well as Mortgages these could include Personal Loans and Credit card debts. After debt is covered you should provide cover to replace the income lost if either you or your partner were to die. This type of plan is called Family Income Benefit and pays out a regular income if you were to die. The term would normally coincide with either your retirement age, or when your children are past full time education. Benefits taken from Life Assurance is totally tax free. Critical Illness Insurance. This type of cover is similar to Life Assurance in as much it can be paid out either as a tax free lump sum, or as a regular tax free income. The difference with Critical Illness is that it pays out not when you die (although you can include Life Assurance in the plan), but if you were to suffer and survive a specific critical illness. Life Assurance companies will each offer slighty different lists of critical illnesses covered, but all will cover the main conditions: Heart Attack, Cancer, Stroke, MS, Kidney Failure and Major
20
Organ Transplant. ( if you need to know specific conditions covered please let me know). Put simply if you suffer one of the critical illnesses, and survive, the plan will pay out. You don’t have to be terminally ill, and you don’t have to be unable to work. The beauty of these plans is that the money you receive enables you to recover at your pace, without having as much financial pressure and worry that you could have if the protection wasn’t in place. Income Protection Insurance (Permanent Health Insurance) This type of cover pays out a regular Tax Free income if you are unable to work due to illness or disability. It generally pays out a percentage of your income, and will increase each year in line with inflation. It makes sense to have this sort of plan run until your normal retirement age. It ensures that if you are off work due to illness then your lifestyle isn’t compromised. I obviously haven’t been able to go into great detail here, but hopefully this gives you a flavour of whats available and what you should do. If you’d like a review of your own protection plans please get it touch (details below). Here’s to a June heatwave….and see you next month. Thanks for reading and see you next Month: Mob: 07919 241386 E-mail ian.nicholson@bwmltd.org Twitter @BWMLimited Web: www.BWMltd.org The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

POSTPONING GREEN-BELT? Many will be aware of the proposed developments to the west and east of Billericay. Such steps, which would include building on green-belt land, should not be taken lightly. I am glad the Council agreed to extend its consultation period to enable residents to submit their views. My consultation response stated that consideration must be given to infrastructure pressures caused by new development. A robust assessment must be made across the full spectrum of infrastructure to ensure supply meets demand. New homes will require roads and other essential amenities; more people will require investment in the NHS and education. Current
money to invest in new roads. To our minds, this means that no development can proceed to the west of Billericay.
By John Baron MP
We also doubt whether new homes can be built elsewhere in Billericay, given the lack of road investment. We must have this funding in place before any new houses are built. I am making my views known to those concerned.
residents must not suffer loss of infrastructure amenity because of new development. Furthermore, I emphasised that any development must have a guarantee that the costs of this infrastructure investment must be in place before the green light is given.
Finally, I also highlighted the importance of the Council looking into land within the local area better suited for development. All land options resulting from the ‘call for sites’ exercise should be explored before any decision is made to build upon the green belt.
Local councillors and I have been right to focus on infrastructure. There are now reports from Essex County Council that there is no

Have you heard a cuckoo yet this year? 20 years ago many more of you would have said ‘yes’, because there were many more cuckoos around. They could be heard in all of the nature reserves around Billericay and were common around the bridleways of Ramsden Heath and Stock. Locally, this year, I have heard just one. So what is causing the decline in our cuckoos? One possible reason is the decline in their favourite food, moth caterpillars. Another is that some of their ‘hosts’ are in decline, or nesting earlier before the cuckoos return cuckoos are parasites: they lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and leave all the stress of feeding their young to them. But we have also found that fewer cuckoos are making it back from the long journey to Africa, a journey that we know very little about. When a species declines, we need to gather evidence as to why, so we can take corrective action. In 2011, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) started tagging cuckoos with radio transmitters so they could find learn about cuckoo migration routes. The results are on the BTO web site: search on “BTO cuckoo tagging” and you can see the story of 22 cuckoos ‘missing in action’. In June, even without cuckoos, there is much to enjoy in the countryside. Its the best time for wildflowers and I always enjoy the guided walk on Mill Meadows (this year on Saturday 7th June) to see the orchids and other grassland specialities. We may see one of the local rarities such as the bright blue harebell. Wildflowers are easier to spot than other wildlife because they don’t run off or fly away when you get close. With warm weather predicted we should get a few butterflies too. In June, the summer butterflies gradually build up and in good years we see a proliferation of meadow browns, gatekeepers and ringlets. One butterfly that has recovered in recent years is the small tortoiseshell. A wildlife farming expert tells me that this recovery may be to do with the grass margins around the fields on some farms. These margins are part of agri-environment schemes where money is paid to farmers to encourage wildlife-friendly farming. Many of the farms along our local stretch of the River Wid are in these schemes and I do find this pays dividends in wildlife. The area has dragonflies, such as the black-tailed skimmer which are in abundance in some years, brown hares and some of our less common farmland birds. In summer you can hear the iconic song of a farmland favourite, the yellowhammer. The song sounds like “a little bit of bread and nooo cheese”. When the song is heard, you have to search the tops of bushes and trees for a view of that bright yellow head. The yellowhammer is certainly a special sight and sound of early summer.

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB May 1 – Saw the club hold its first meeting at the new venue of Burstead GC – it was generally agreed that the accommodation was more comfortable and the cuisine an improvement. The service was much better as well since it was provided by Burstead GC and not by Rotarians. We were enthralled by another presentation from the Rotary partner charity, Shelter Box that provides first line assistance for victims of disasters. Too much to report here, but an excellent charity to support. May 2 Official opening of Thriftwood 6th form college - Mayflower’s major local charity for 2013/14 was officially opened to great acclaim. May 17 Magic Night – at Stock Village Hall – Sold Out July 13 Billericay Summerfest [Platinum Sponsor Burstead Farm Shop] A full stage and arena programme has now been organised with the star attraction a 30 piece marching Caledonian pipe and drum band from Chelmsford. This will take place on Sun Corner with the usual format of stalls including the ever popular Continental Market. A beer and Pimms tent will be available to accompany the many types of foods on offer and of course there will be kiddies rides, pony rides, Punch & Judy and a classic car display. Entry is free to this annual summer community and charity fund raising event. A few stall spaces are available, but these are going fast. Keep up to date at www.billericaysummerfest.co.uk July 19 Music in the Garden I – in aid of NSPCC Aug 9 Music in the Garden II - in aid of Shelter Box Sep 7 (TBC) Bell Boat Race – Mayflower’s form of Dragon Boat racing. Applications to participate welcome. It’s great fun. Join teams from Rotary, Billericay Rugby Club, Tennis Club and others on the River Chelmer. Dec 7 Billericay Christmas Market (BCM 2014) – [Platinum Sponsors: Burstead GC, Para Bar Muir, Essex Auto Group, Paul Robinson Solicitors] - the Carousel returns this year and we have some new surprises. Santa’s Parade and Grotto will be better than ever. There are a few stall spaces left. Keep up to date at www.billericaychristmasmarket.co.uk
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB Hi Folks The Easter Hamper Raffle, held in several local pubs and restaurants, realised a final profit of just over £900. Once again, we would like to give our thanks to all those who supported our fundraiser and to the managers of all those hostelries that hosted our Easter Hampers. We have also raised £133 with a Car Park duty held in Basildon Town Centre on Easter Saturday. Our Big Band Night, Remembering Legends, held late last month proved to be another great success and was well attended by many of our usual supporters. Figures are still being worked on but a substantial donation is envisaged for J’s Hospice, a hospice dedicated to treatment of young people with cancer. One last reminder, that our last big Fund raising event of the Lions’ year is our 5th Beer Festival, held at Billericay Football Club on the last weekend in June. Over 50 ales, ciders and perries are on offer from all over the country, chosen for their taste by our ‘expert’ beer drinkers! Prices are kept very reasonable and you can order drinks from a third to a full pint. Hot and cold food will also be on offer at all sessions and together with the live bands from Friday night through until Sunday the weekend is one not to miss. Why not come along and let your hair down with the Lions? For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
As with most societies/voluntary organisations, Billericay Round Table annually elect members to take up the various positions on its committee, and each year, we change our Chairman. This helps us to try and keep our ideas fresh, and each Chairman tends to bring their own strengths to the table, so when we all remembered that this years Chairman, Dave Howell, has been running marathons for years, we knew we were in trouble, and this was confirmed when he put forward his idea of a “Chairman’s Challenge”. It appears that the exploits of Tim Butt (whom we mentioned in last months article raising money for his charity CRYathlon - www.CRYathlon.com) as a cyclist and triathlete have inspired our Chairman, and he has proposed that we undertake our own triathlon! Whilst the whole event is very much still at the planning stage, the current proposal is to run 8km to Basildon Sporting Village, then swim 1.4km, before finishing it all off with a 50km cycle. Heaven knows how some of us will manage to complete the 59.4km course if it all goes ahead, but with lots of hard work and preparation, let’s hope that some of us do! Once the finer details are worked out we will update our website with the final plan and the date that the event will take place, and we will also let visitors to the website know how our training is going, and where any sponsorship money raised will be headed. No doubt our Chairman will have plenty of other challenges for us throughout the year, along with a wide variety of social and fundraising activities, so if you are male, between the ages of 18-45 and you are interested in finding out a bit more about what we get up to, please visit www.billericay.roundtable.co.uk or email media@billericayroundtable.co.uk, we’d love to hear from you!

Home cured Scottish salmon gravadlax with beetroot salad (Serves 10)
Gravadlax is a Swedish method for curing and preserving salmon, and paired with the sweet, crisp beetroot salad, makes a deliciously light and refreshing summer dish but a good quality smoked salmon works well if you’ve not time to cure your own! Ingredients: 1 kg fillet Scottish salmon cut into fine slices For the salad dressing: 500ml rapeseed oil 100ml runny honey 100ml wholegrain mustard For the beetroot salad: 1 kg fresh beetroot, peeled and diced 1 bunch thyme leaves 250ml honey 125ml white wine vinegar 60g caster sugar 500ml rapeseed oil Whisk salad ingredients together until smooth and creamy and pour over beetroot and leave to marinate for 25 minutes. Spoon a little extra mustard on to salmon slices and arrange on a cold serving plate together with a handful of endive. Add generous helping beetroot salad to each plate and spoon over any extra dressing. Sprinkle with fresh dill and serve with lemon wedges.
