Welcome
To the first edition of Around Town magazine! Your monthly, go-to guide on everything in Billericay, Ingatestone, Ramsden Heath and Stock. Our main aim is to support local, independent businesses and give you, the reader, all the information available to enjoy local life, while supporting the independent, bespoke boutiques, shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants and businesses which we are lucky to have in our towns. Without our valued custom, we could see our high streets filled with mainstream, global shops and we’ll lose the relationships with local butchers, greengrocers and shop keepers. We are also working quite closely with local charities and councils, who play a crucial role in our towns and villages. Check out the Billericay Round Table article (p24) And Basildon Council advert (p12). We have some great articles within Around Town too – Essex Wildlife Trust Volunteer and Billericay resident, Neil Sumner, has delivered a seasonal piece about the local wildlife on our doorstep which we probably walk past almost every day during our busy lives (p19). Around Town journalist Kelly Plume has reported on new businesses springing to life in the area (p21) and discusses the controversial arrival of PoundLand to Billericay High Street (p6). Paul A. Carr, from Emmanuel Church shares his thoughts at this Christmas time along with a guide to some of the local Church Services (p22). All of this, along with your chance to win family tickets to this years pantomime Peter Pan at the Towngate Theatre (p13). We hope you enjoy Around Town Magazine. Please feel free to contact us and let us know your thoughts on our magazine (your opinion is vital for us to deliver an interesting magazine for you) info@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk also please check us out at facebook.com/ aroundtownmagazines and our website www. aroundtownmagazines.co.uk where you can read every edition of Around Town as an E edition.

PRE-CHRISTMAS HEALTH TIPS As we move into the festive period it can be so easy to get distracted and complacent with our health and fitness, especially as the colder weather can lead to laziness, overeating and general lethargy. Group exercise = motivation = results
◊ Take part in group exercise ◊ As we enter winter our immune systems can become weakened, by taking a multivitamin, especially vitamin C you can drastically improve your chances of avoiding illness over the festive season. ◊ Taking a protein shake 1-2 times a day as a meal replacement can stop you snacking on bad things. Bargain Billericay It’s been almost 3 months since Poundland controversially opened it’s doors onto Billericay High Street and I explored whether trading director David Coxon was right in promising ‘Billericay shoppers will love us’. Providing 30 new job opportunities and offering unbeatable prices, Poundland is the newest addition to the High Street replacing supermarket, Somerfield. This has not only raised eyebrows, but many a stern opinion among those who live and shop in this traditional old market town. “It’s a tacky shop which has a big stigma attached to it” says Michael Dewhirst, 19. “ I’m pleased it’s not another restaurant but I will never use Poundland and would’ve much preferred a clothes shop”. Som Singal, has seen many shops come and go over the past 25 years being the manager of newsagent Smokers Paradise and acknowledges the diverse attitudes towards the new store. “Despite peoples negative opinion, they will still use it. Iceland had a similar divided affect on shoppers and I know of many who will still go in there but put their shopping into different carrier bags”. With an air of such judgment portrayed, it’s easy to see why the ‘snobbery’ finger is sometimes pointed at Billericay. “There is too much snobbery in this town and I think it’s positive that the likes of Iceland and Poundland address a rebalance within the community” insists parent Jane Grogan. “I shop there myself, it offers a great economic alternative to other high street outlets”. Local figure and town crier Jim Shrubb defends the standpoint of our community. “Poundland is a long way from the traditional, oldie worldy town we love. Saying that, I have been in a couple of times. If people want to call us snobs then so be it. However, it is just a matter of residents treasuring Billericay’s valuable history and heritage’. It appears that Poundland is much more than just a new shop in town and with optimistic, bustling trade, maybe a prevalent symbol of the hard times we now live in financially. What are YOUR views on the shops in our High Streets? Please let us know: info@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk or write to us at: Around Town Magazines, Radford Way, Billericay, Essex, CM12 0DE

mama wolfpack the most exciting new rock band you will see this year
Mama Wolfpack are a UK rock band whose founding members all originate from Essex.
With an undeniable love for rock music, Ben Western (vocals and rhythm guitar), Ibs (lead guitar) and David Bexon (drums) joined forces in 2011 and formed Mama Wolfpack. They were later joined by Chris Sullivan (bass guitar). The band spent the best part of a year in a gritty South Bermondsey studio to form their sound. Through poor sound proofing, damaged ear drums, broken drum sticks and a lot of trading amps and guitars, they found ‘that sound’. This sound has three stand out elements melodic yet powerful vocals, a pounding section which sits high in the mix, and guitar that injects a lot of power into sound.
– very rhythm a lead the
Mama Wolfpack have created a rock sound that in their live set will give moments of jumping to distorted guitars and a thumping rhythm such as the song “We Won’t Fight”, to the more subtle and subtle and emotionally charged moments of “She Said”. Photos - stuartbeesley.co.uk
The band started gigging in London since July 2012, and are building a strong following and are gaining great feedback from both promoters, venues and fans. Check out their website or YouTube channel to hear their demos, and like their Facebook page to keep up-to-date on future demos and gigs. You can download the bands first two demos “We Won’t Fight” and “You See Lines” from their Soundcloud page.
Expect a lot more from this band in 2013...

To mark the launch of Around Town magazine, the Editors are offering established local sports clubs the opportunity to publicise their presence within the Billericay community... Tucked away behind Stock Tennis club on Stock Road, many residents may be surprised to learn that Billericay has a thriving Rugby Club. We hope to use this article to introduce you to the club and use future editions to provide updates regarding club news, match reports and developments on and off the pitch.
A Brief History Billericay Rugby Football Club (BRFC) was formed in 1959 by members of the St John’s Cricket Club who still share the Willowbrook Sports Ground with the Rugby Club. BRFC’s first full fixture took place in February 1960 versus a Brentwood XV and since then the club has built steadily. Three senior (adult) teams turn out every week competing at varying levels of the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) London and South East league structure. With plenty of opportunities to socialise (as a playing or social member) at the club bar and recount tries that may or may not have been scored, you could say there is something for everyone. The club’s finest moments are undoubtedly the two visits to Twickenham, the home of rugby, in the RFU’s National Cup Competitions. Billericay won the competition in 1999, beating Midlands club Old Silhillians RFC by 19 points to 3, but lost to Hartpury RFC (a Gloucester Rugby Academy team) in 2007. These momentous occasions did not occur by luck or short term design, the majority of the Billericay players that competed on the hallowed Twickenham turf were the result of Billericay’s only two youth teams... until now.
The Club Today There have been some big developments at Billericay RFC with the introduction of junior rugby teams/players from 6 years and up. Over the past four seasons, volunteers from the club’s senior membership have grown a youth section “from the bottom up” and Billericay RFC now offers youth rugby to under 13 level with plans to push on through to having an under 17’s team (the link between youth and adult rugby) as quickly as possible. The 1st team (adult) currently play their league rugby in Essex Division 1 and continue to perform well in cup competitions. The 2nd and 3rd team play Merit Table rugby which is a league system predicated upon enjoyable rugby. So...that is an introduction to Billericay’s very own Rugby Club. With Rugby one of the fastest growing team sports in the world due to its principles of respect, discipline and team work, the club hope to continue to welcome new players and social members with open arms. Come along to Willowbrook on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning and take in some of the action. “Is there much wildlife around here?”. A question I was once asked by a person walking the dog on a dull and murky autumn afternoon along a local bridleway. The question was understandable because it was a quiet day, a soporific time, punctuated by just the occasional call of a bird or grey squirrel. “Yes” I replied “There is wildlife around here, but it helps to know what is there and to pick your time and place”. Nature is everywhere, but how much we can see and enjoy will depend on the season, weather and the habitat around us. Around our area we can enjoy many different habitats and the sights and sounds that are within them. Although Autumn may at times seem quiet, you may suddenly find yourself within a noisy flock of tits in a hedgerow, or see a flock of woodpigeon or finches descending into a ploughed field. Or you can just enjoy a colourful walk amongst ancient trees and coppices in Norsey Wood or Swan Wood. Just taking the time to stop, look and listen can help us appreciate some of our own local wildlife. In Winter, well-wrapped, we can sit in the hides at Hanningfield and look at flocks of duck, coot and grebes across the water, walk the footpaths and look for brown hares, or flocks of starlings and thrushes on the frosted fields and horse grazing pasture at around the River Wid and Ramsden Heath. Colder winters can mean hungry birds and animals and they become more confiding in their desperate search for food, so it’s a good time to put up feeders for garden birds. So, yes, there is wildlife around us. But you have to pick your time and place and be lucky with the weather. Perhaps get a local expert or join one of the Essex Wildlife Trust or local district council events to help you find what is there? And being out in the natural environment is good for us. The exercise and fresh air are invigorating and the views of landscapes are soothing and help us to forget our problems. Neilsumner123@aol.com follow me twitter.com/neilsumner123

New Businesses Around Town With Christmas round the corner, shopping is the main agenda, which seems to prove as a bitter reminder of the gloomy financial climate we are currently in. With phrases such as recession, credit crunch and inflation overshadowing our spending for the past four years now, we all know too well that our stocking fillers may not quite fill our stockings once again this year. Despite these tough times, if you take a wander around town, you’ll notice there is up and coming life emerging, in the shape of exciting young business’ and innovative entrepreneurs. Chris Jestico of Billericay worked in retail for 28 years before deciding to focus on launching ‘Yellow Jersey Cycles’. It’s been a year in the making but passionate cyclists, Chris and son Dan, opened their very Yellow Jersey Cycles own bespoke cycling shop in Billericay on 17th November. “We fill a gap in the market and cycling is becoming increasingly popular, especially after the Olympics”. “Billericay is a bustling commuter town and it is small independent retailers like ourselves that will keep the High Street alive”. Other recent additions to Billericay include ‘Vetro Bar’, a glamorous new hot spot on the High Street and ‘Mangal Express’, an authentic Turkish take away restaurant. More than just your average kebab shop ‘Mangal Express’, Radford Way is Ishmael’s first family run kitchen and he is thrilled to be here sharing it with us. “I have my community’s best interests at heart and I hold myself responsible for not only feeding them but providing job opportunities for them as soon as I can”. Exploring a different avenue of the food industry is young entrepreneur, Ashley Garrard, who is bringing his knowledge of global cuisine to Stock village with his brand new personal chef service. Inspired by his travels, Vetro Bar Ashley is back in his hometown and is a keen realist towards making a triumph out of ‘Ashley’s Kitchen’. “I would be silly if I wasn’t a little worried but I offer such a unique menu (including kangaroo and lama) my competition is slim. If I can get through and survive this economic climate it’ll spur me onto greater success when the circumstances improve”. Somebody who knows just how hard recent times have been and how to push through is Lucy Webb, 28, owner of Loo Loo’s children’s boutique in Ingatestone, which opened back in April. “Business slumped around summer and I thought it’d be a good time to launch an online store to boost sales. It has since picked up brilliantly but I can’t stress enough how important it is to support our local independent shops. You can get everything you need in Ingatestone, which is a great convenience. I know times are hard and some things may cost a little more but by the time you’ve got in the car and driven further afield it soon balances out”. Another optimistic and determined young business woman is Meera Khalfan, 25. Meera is opening the first UK branch of an international children’s fitness brand ‘My Gym’ in Billericay next year. “We are nearly there and it’s great to see what I’ve already achieved! It all stemmed from my 2 year old nephew telling me how much fun he Mangal Express had at ‘My Gym’ Dubai. Although a brand new concept, I am confident Billericay, as a health conscious, forward-thinking town will warm to it”. This impressive blend of new, eclectic vibrancy within our business community is enough to reconsider whether we truly are experiencing the dreary recession we are informed of. Dawn Shanahan, new pub landlady at the Cock Inn, Stock agrees that things are looking brighter and with backing from the public this will only improve. “Trade is really picking up but it is still a case of, if we don’t use it, we will lose it. For instance I only shop at my local outlets and by doing so I continue to put back into the small bustling village we all love” By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume.

Christmas 2012 It’s so hard to believe we’ve reached the end of an amazing 2012. The success of the Queens Diamond Jubilee, Wimbledon, and the Olympic and Paralympic Games seem like distant memories, don’t they? However, there is one final celebration of the year still to come. In fact, it’s the greatest celebration of all - the time when we celebrate how God sent His Son Jesus into the world, born as a child in a manger yet destined to die a death on a cross, to be our Saviour. It’s true. As an anonymous poet once said: “If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent an economist. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Saviour.” And no matter how we try, we cannot separate the Christmas story from the Easter story. The familiar words of John Lennon seem to be everywhere this time of year: “So this is Christmas and what have you done?” I’d like to change this slightly: “So this is Christmas and what will you do?” Will you celebrate that Jesus was born to be our Saviour? It is, after all, what makes Christmas worth celebrating and, just like those amazing events in the summer, it can be life changing to all of you – but only if you make the time to enjoy the celebration. ‘Churches Together in Billericay’ extend an invitation to worship with them this Christmas season. Why not put a date in your diary and be sure not to miss out on the greatest Christmas gift of all – Jesus?
