Welcome Around Towners to the February edition of Billericay’s leading community magazine. Love is in the air this month with Valentine’s Day just around the corner - everywhere you look there are hearts, candles, cards and chocolates lining the shop shelves, along with the dreaded Easter Eggs!! February also welcomes in the start of Chinese New Year – the year of the horse. Jo England joined a Slimming World group just 12 months ago, vowing to lose her post baby weight after having two children in quick succession. Open Day Sat Jan 11 This was a success resulting in several new players for both colts and seniors sections and a number of bookings to hire the clubhouse for functions. Having seen what was available they readily agreed to sign up. Some of those attending had recently relocated to Billericay because they liked the town and the local community that still exists here despite the proximity to London and want to part of that scene to which the Cricket Club is a contributor. Indoor Nets These have started in earnest in early January with a number of local clubs taking the opportunity to hire the two indoor lanes. Churches Together Love Billericay Billericay is a great place to live and work! It’s location and accessibility, its schools and clubs, the High Street with its pubs, restaurants and independent shops adds to its unique character. One of the often underrated strengths of our town is the vibrancy of Churches Together in Billericay (CTB) who are committed to serving you from: coffee mornings to youth groups; weddings to funerals; mums/dads and tots; from Fun in the Park to Remembrance Sunday and much more besides. A recent survey found that 70% of all volunteers in the UK are church based – which is quite an amazing statistic. This month I want to highlight some of the ways in which CTB volunteers are serving our community and how Saint Mary’s in the High Street is becoming a hub for many of our activities: Street Pastors: Many of you will have come across Street Pastors (SP) since they were launched in November 2013. Operating out of the ‘hub’ of Saint Mary’s, SP’s serve the night time community on Friday and Saturday evenings by supporting those who are vulnerable, ill or injured and, for those who may be a little ‘worse for wear’ provide water and flip flops and ensure they arrive home safely. You can call into see them any Friday or Saturday night or contact them on 07443601546, email Billericay@streetpastors. org.uk or Twitter @BillericaySP Essex Savers Credit Union: The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken a lot about ‘pay day loan sharks’ and is actively encouraging communities to set up Credit Unions. Current plans are to open a Credit Union service point at the Library one day a week. MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB Billericay Christmas Market We hope that you all enjoyed the atmosphere generated by this Free community event. Mayflower Rotary Club would like to thank all who attended and contributed to the £40,000 that was generated for charitable causes on the day. Retro Cult Car Winner The winning ticket 0220 was drawn out at noon on Christmas Eve by the Pink Nissan Figaro owner Claire Joyce of Billericay High Street shop enjoy….clairey fairey cakes. Claire had donated the car for raffle following her decision to move on from Cupcakes to Wedding cakes and the car was no longer required to promote her Cupcake business. The car could not have gone to a better home. The winner Tracey Atkins was at Billericay Christmas Market for the first time with her husband Barry to take her mother, who was in a wheelchair and suffering from liver cancer on the ‘Downton Abbey’ carousel. Unfortunately the carousel had not arrived due to a transport breakdown, but Barry still saw the opportunity to make the most of the day by buying a car raffle ticket for Tracey who not long after their wedding in August had spotted a pink Nissan Figaro in a car park and told Barry it was a car that she wanted. The sale of the ticket was well remembered by them and Sally Davies, headmistress of Thriftwood School from whom they bought the ticket. Tracy is a specialist 1-2-1 teacher in a Wickford primary school and fully understands the special needs of the children for whom Thriftwood cater for all of Essex. Mayflower Rotary had determined that all surpluses from the raffle should go to their main local charity project Thriftwood School 6th form college. Thriftwood School OBE Thriftwood School caters for special needs education for children from all over Essex. The creation of a 6th form college will mean that these needs are catered for beyond the age of 15. The funds raised from the Christmas Market and Retro Car Raffle will go a long way to providing equipment for the college and Mayflower Rotary will be making a presentation to Sally Davies who was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List on a visit to the college on Friday 17 Jan.
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB After collating all the costs and counting all of our income from the Christmas Sleigh run the Lions will have raised over £7000 to spend in the local community. Many thanks to everybody who supported our appeal, including EAG, Lincon Batteries, the local supermarkets and of course to you, the local people of Billericay. Despite the appalling weather conditions during the run the totals raised was right up there with the highest collections of all time. Many thanks from all at the Lions Club. There are still a few places for our Taste of Greece evening, booked for March 29th at the Emmanuel Church. For those of you who have never attended our taste nights, they are quizzes on the countries in question set around four or five courses of that country’s favourite dishes. They have proved very popular over the last few years so please book early to avoid disappointment – prices are £12 per ticket. – and no plate throwing! Our Big Band Night, earmarked for Saturday, May 24th, to be held at The Emmanuel Church in Laindon Road, is also being enquired after. Tickets are also around £12 per person, so again, please book early to avoid disappointment! Other events such as our Beer Festival held on the last weekend in June and our Easter Hamper appeal are still being considered and more details will follow in due course. I hope that quite a few of you took part in the Big Garden Birdwatch last month. At the time of writing, which is before the event, I’m not sure that the birds will be as varied and interesting as in recent years when we had colder winters. There will be common garden species such as blackbirds, robin, collared dove, woodpigeon, blue and great tits. But some birds are only possibles in a one hour time window. A wintering blackcap would be a great bonus. This little warbler has a fabulous song that enriches our woodlands and scrubby areas in the springtime. Until the 1950s it was known only as a summer visitor but then some birds from Central Europe decided to come here for the winter. We don’t know why, but they survived and many more have been doing so since. So look for a small grey bird with a black cap that’s the male, or a brown cap, sported by the female. It particularly likes raisins and apples but sunflower hearts or fatballs will do. Most of our summer blackcaps probably winter north of the Sahara. This migration behaviour has helped their population and they have increased whereas most of our summer visitors have declined. It is not only the reduction in insect life and habitat that has affected our summer visitors, it is also that food is harder to find on migration and in their wintering quarters due to change of land use and more extreme weather. Worse still, many of our songbirds that we protect and enjoy here are subject to trapped or shot as they make their way through Southern Europe and Northern Africa. Migrating birds were once an important and sustainable food source for local people but as bird populations decrease and human populations expand, any capturing now has a big impact. And nowadays much of the killing is just for sport. The birds are very disadvantaged by modern technology: high velocity rifles with telescopic sites and MP3 recordings of bird calls to lure them into the traps. There are some countries now that I try to avoid buying products from until their governments get control of this problem. But back to watching our local birds. Behaviour in the garden can be fascinating. I see the female chaffinch go confidently into the squirrel proof feeder, yet the male stands outside looking bemused (suddenly I’m reminded of the wife and myself in the aisles of Waitrose). The male resorts to picking up the fragments of seed and nut from the ground. Its not just birds, I have seen the occasional mouse doing the same. One late summer evening in the garden I was waiting to see bats and my eye was caught by a wood mouse running along the branches of the cherry tree and helping itself to seed from the bird feeder. An unexpected pleasure.

Tom Alderton, 23 always knew he wanted to be a painter and decorator and so did those around him. Established in 1974, Kamble Oriental Take Away is pretty much an institution in Billericay. So when the opportunity arose for a review of its cuisine, we obviously jumped at the chance! Run by Will Yau, Kamble, based on Billericay High Street, has grown a loyal customer base throughout the years, and it’s not hard to see why. We had a wide range of food delivered to Around Town HQ covering all the classic Chinese meals to some that were not so common on the regular orders. Each arrived piping hot, and ready to eat! As soon as the food was with us, we were hit by an aroma that you can imagine wouldn’t be out of place in a Bejing food market! Definitely got the taste buds going! To start we had two classics, mixed Hors d’Oeuvres and Crispy Aromatic Duck. The duck meat was tender and juicy, and the skin crispy and tasty, exactly as it should be. It was complimented with the traditional pancakes, spring onion, cucumber and Hoisin sauce. The Hors d’Oeuvres consisted of Satay Chicken Skewers, Prawns on Toast, Mini Spring Rolls, Spare Ribs and Crispy Seaweed. The ribs were meaty, tender and not chewy at all! Nothing was left! A testament to how good the food was! We then moved onto the mains! Well the selection here certainly did not disappoint! One thing that I have always thought when trying to decipher the age old problem of choosing between a Saturday night Chinese or Indian, is that Chinese meals have been known to be a bit ‘gloopey’. This was a bit of a worry when opening the packaging. I shouldn’t have worried, as before us was some of the lightest food, that had obviously been prepared freshly, without a heavy thick sauce in sight! We had, the amazing Salt & Chilli Squid and Ribs. Neither of which I had tried before, but now are down as 1st picks when ordering again! The squid in particular was so tasty, it would have been wrong not to go back for seconds! Another favourite were the King Prawns in Oyster Sauce. Big juicy prawns served with vegetables in a mouth-watering oyster sauce. Amazing! Shredded Beef with Chilli Peking Style was another delicacy that proved a hit, with none left when we were done! Combining these two dishes with the hot and spicy Singapore Noodles was spot on! A great tasting meal! One thing that everyone commented on was the portion size! In comparison to previous meals, the amount of food was more than enough to share around a hungry workforce without being overwhelming. There is nothing worse than opening a takeaway to find only a few chunks of meat, or a sparse covering of sauce; both were aplenty. Fresh, flavoursome, delicious food delivered promptly, makes Kamble the only choice for a Chinese Takeaway. They are even licenced to sell alcoholic drinks, offering a good range of wines and beers, so there really is no need to go elsewhere.

Beard of Billericay We are well acquainted with 2014 now and December feels like a good while back, especially for ones who went full - beard amongst us and joined St Nicholas in all his bearded glory for a Merry Hairy Christmas! Yes, they must now be feeling the nip in the air this winter! The Railway and The Chequers beard-off consisted of our bubbly, stubbly locals who participated in raising hundreds of pounds for Bowel Cancer. The competition came to a close when the winning beard was awarded with a bottle of champagne and professional wet shave courtesy of Toni and Guy’s Mens Salon. On the 29th of December the beards gathered to be styled by the beautiful Caz before being revealed to the guest judge from The British Beard Association. After much deliberation over the many different facial curls, locks, manes, tresses, bushes, twists, puffs that were displayed by our very own Billericay beardo’s it was the dense fuzz of Around Town’s very own Mr Stuart Sinclair that caught the eye of the judge! (or maybe it was just his gift of the gab that swung it) I caught up with Stuart to find out what it was like to win and how he now feels with a naked face. “I couldn’t believe it! There was some tough competition too! But as they say its not all about length, its what you do with it. My beard had got pretty long though and I shaved straight after the event. I have already started growing it again though. To me it didn’t matter who won. I am a regular in both pubs and the most important thing was raising the money and awareness for the Bowel Cancer charity. We all just happened to have a good time and a laugh whilst doing it.” This article is dedicated to Brenda!..Hi Brenda!

With the rain bringing floods throughout the area, a number of BRFC members put in some serious hard work to make the pitches playable for this Round tie. All of the players and supporters are glad they did!
Billericay 1st team dispatched a powerful Old Actonians team in the latest round of the National Vase, leaving the final just 4 games away. We knew we were going to be in for am extremely physical game, but we fronted up and took the game to the opposition. The first half went to plan with some very big defensive performances playing up the hill meaning we turned around in the lead. It was a lead that we never lost coming out eventual 13-9 winners. A home tie against Old Gravesendians awaits on Saturday 1st February (1:30pm Kick Off). Please do your best to come down and watch us at Willowbrook. Your support will really spur us on! Remember, there is always a fully stocked bar and a warm clubhouse with big screen TVs, making your local rugby club, the only place you need to be on a Saturday afternoon!

Venison in Orange and Brandy Sauce Venison is a delicious and nutritious red meat. It is high in Iron and is lower in fats in comparison with other red meats. 600g venison meat cubed 3 tblsp brandy 225g shallots 1 pinch ground coriander 1 crushed glove garlic 2 tblsp plain flour 1 tblsp black treacle 1 tblsp tomato puree 125g sliced mushrooms 2 oranges 300 ml beef stock 3 tblsp oil 1oz butter Salt & pepper to season Preheat oven to 160 C /325 F / Gas 3. Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the venison meat. Transfer meat to a casserole. In the same oil, fry the onions and garlic until golden and add to the casserole. Add the flour to the remaining oil and cook for a minute before stirring in the beef stock and bringing to the boil. of Thinly peel the oranges and cut into very thin strips. Add the strips orange rind to the sauce along with the juice of the oranges. Add the tomato puree, treacle, coriander, brandy and seasoning. Stir the mixture then pour into the casserole dish. Cover and cook casserole for 1 ½ hours. Fry the mushrooms in the butter then add to casserole then cook for a further ½ hour or until meat is tender.
