ITS OK CAMPAIGN

T

Its ok not to be ok

he Its OK Campaign started just a month ago because of an idea Myself and Sarah Flynn had. I have personally been diagnosed with Military PTSD from my time in the Royal Air Force and also Bipolar. Sarah Suffers with Anxiety and Depression. So with our own personal battles with Mental Health and how hard we have found it to get help, we wanted to raise awareness by starting our own campaign.

to help us and in turn help others when it comes to mental health. We

are currently interviewing Paralympian Hannah Stodel, Footballer Jamie O’Hara, Olympic Gold Medallist Amy Williams and Celebrity Calum Best. These interviews will make up an instrumental part of our Project to go into schools and colleges to speak to students about mental health. Telling the stories of great sports people and their experiences with mental health will show that it can affect anyone. In addition to this, we have recently announced Nicola McLean as our first Campaign Ambassador.

...IT CAN AFFECT ANYONE.

We started by holding Instagram Live Chats every Wednesday evening at 8pm. After the first one we noticed our follows drastically grew. On that basis I had the idea that maybe if people heard celebrities talk about their battles with mental health, other people would think it was such a taboo subject. We have now been in touch with a number of celebrities and sports personalities that all want

If anyone would like to contact us or even keep track of our progress and stories then just follow us on instagram and Twitter - @itsok_campaign

LOCAL MP

I

Update From The Local MP

am very pleased to be able to write in the first edition of the Beaulieu Park Magazine. There are a number of different community magazines across different parts of Chelmsford. I hope this one for Beaulieu Park residents has a long and successful future. Chelmsford has recently been named as the top place to live in the whole East of England. It is a huge honour to represent you in Parliament. I was first elected as Member of Parliament for Chelmsford last year. I am the first woman to hold the post. This has been an exciting year for women in Parliament as we have been celebrating the centenary of women first being given the right to vote, and also the right to stand in elections. In Westminster I chair the All Party Group for Women in Parliament. I also sit on the Science and Technology Select Committee as well as the committee for Women and Equalities. In addition, I have recently taken on a role as the Parliamentary Private Secretary for the Foreign Office ministerial team. This is a fascinating role at this important time. In November we remembered 100 years since the end of World War 1. Many of the streets in Beaulieu Park are named after individuals who gave their lives in 1914-1918. As the sun set on Remembrance Sunday I was able to join local residents for a very special service. Together we read the names of the servicemen each of 8

the streets is named after. We reminded ourselves of how they each served and how they died. When I was elected I promised that I would make local infrastructure one of my top priorities. I have recently been in Beaulieu Park at the opening of the new community centre and to visit the new school. Both have been extremely happy visits. It is very good to see these promised local facilities now up and running. They are so vital to making sure the entire community can blossom. Chelmsford’s second railway station at Beaulieu Park has been promised for many decades but not yet delivered. Earlier this year we heard the good news that the bid for funding this and the North East Bypass have been put forward for the final round of the Housing Infrastructure Fund. The cost of these projects is substantial and could be up to £250 million. Essex County Council are in the process of finalising the details of the bid. I expect it to be submitted early next year. In last month’s budget the Government agreed to increase the amount of funding

available across England by a further £500 million. I am told that our train line is the busiest in the country, so building the new station is an extremely complicated project and will take time both to plan and then to deliver. But we need it and I will fight for it. Another good bit of news is the work that has been happening in and around the Chelmsford city centre. Essex Police have recently recruited an additional 150 police officers, there is also a team of new Police Community Support Officers busy in and around the High Street areas. The “Pubwatch” scheme which brings together local pubs, clubs and voluntary organisations to keep the centre safe at night has recently won a national award as the best scheme in the entire country. In Westminster MPs have obviously been very busy, especially with the very complex situation regarding the UK/EU negotiations. If you do have an individual issue that you would like me to help with then do email on vicky.ford.mp@parliament.uk or you can make an appointment at one of my fortnightly surgeries.

DAN THE VICAR

I

Seasons Greetings!

I love this time of year. No humbug nonsense in our house. It’s true that I don’t get quite as eye-poppingly mind-bogglingly super excited as I used to but I do get to enjoy watching my 3 boys build up with gleeful anticipation. Christmas is coming! You’ll hear people insist that Christmas has lost its “real meaning”. They’ll complain that people tend to only give a cursory nod to the baby in the thingy with the star and the angels and shepherds and stuff. Some Christians will whine that this time of year has been hijacked by commercialism and to an extent that’s true but let’s not whine about it, let’s do something! Have some fun! If Christ’s coming is a celebration – celebrate!

I look with a degree of envy at the festivities and rituals of many cultures at important times in their calendar. Take the Desert Festival of Jaisalmer in India, the Rio carnival in Brazil, the Mardi Gras in Louisiana USA, the Mexican Day of the Dead or the Songkran Water Festival in Thailand. I look at these and feel I could learn a lot from them about how to really party. So you won’t hear this vicar bemoan the absence of the “real meaning” of Christmas. I simply want to learn how best to celebrate the presence of God during this season. I love this time of year not least because of the birth of Jesus who has changed and is changing my life. I want this reality to re-enchant my Christmas celebrations rather

than joining those who get stroppy because others enjoy the various evolved elements of trees and tinsel and cake and crackers and mulled wine. There’s not a day goes by when I don’t thank God for the love he’s shown me. If that hasn’t yet been your understanding and experience of Christmas then I won’t give you a hard time. My prayer is that in the years ahead the church I help lead (St Francis Community Church) will grow some epic Christmas traditions that bring even more joy to you and the rest of our community in north Chelmsford. Until then, may you be blessed with the knowledge of God’s love for you today and may you have an absolute knock out Christmas whatever you’re doing.

The finest Sparkling White Wines from the South of France, delivered straight to your door. Legend has it that in 1531 Dom PĂŠrignon visited the Abbey at St. Hilaire near Limoux in the South of France. There he was shown the process the Benedictine monks used to make sparkling Blanquette wines by allowing a second fermentation to take place in the bottle. On his return to Rheims he used the technique with local wines and Champagne was born. Our Original Fizz comes from La Digne d'Aval which is just a stone's throw from Limoux.

THE SAVINGS GURU Savings Roundup Marcus drives easy access savings rates higher In October, I wrote about the launch of Marcus, part of Goldman Sachs. Prior to their launch, the best easy access accounts were paying 1.35%, so it was a surprise when such a big name entered the market with a headline rate of 1.50%. Although 0.15% of this is a bonus for twelve months, the revert rate of 1.35% after a year comfortably sat in our best buys anyway. Unsurprisingly, the bank announced they had attracted 50,000 savers within ten days of launching! Early in November, Marcus announced that figure had doubled to 100,000 with more than £2.3bn saved with them. There haven’t been any updates since which may be due to their growth slowing. This is because their arrival to the market has forced other providers to respond. Last month, we featured Nottingham Building Society’s eSaver paying 1.55%, which briefly topped Marcus. Savers needed to be faster than Usain Bolt to take advantage though, with the account being withdrawn within 48 hours of launch due to the overwhelming demand. However, other banks have responded too with Kent Reliance and Virgin Money joining Marcus in paying 1.50% on their account. The Kent Reliance account is particularly attractive as it can be opened and managed by internet, post 18

and in branch – with the former building society (now part of FTSE listed One Savings Bank plc) having nine branches across Kent and the South East – and having no restrictions on the account.

come in two options. Regular savings style accounts which look for a minimum monthly commitment and ordinary instant savings accounts which can be accessed without any notice being required.

Virgin Money’s Double Take eSaver comes with a lower £1 opening account balance than Kent Reliance’s, but savers can only with draw money twice a year from the account. There’s also a clutch of banks paying 1.40%, including Charter Savings Bank, Essex based Shawbrook and Sainsbury’s Bank as well as NS&I’s Premium Bonds paying a prize pool of 1.40%. This is all good news for savers and a 20% increase on where easy access rates were at the start of 2018!

The regular savings versions offer the best rates with Halifax paying 4.5% on their ‘Kids Monthly Saver’ which can be opened online or in their network of branches. A minimum monthly commitment of £10 is required.

Children’s savings for Christmas With Christmas looming, I often get asked which are the best savings accounts for children, from parents and relatives who want to gift money – either instead of a present or in addition to. The good news is there are some great options for children as banks are keen to attract them. Banks know that statistically we are more likely to leave our partners than our bank! Therefore, they are keen to attract children in, knowing there’s a good chance many will stay with them when they are adults. Consequently, they offer some very attractive rates. Children’s

Saffron Building Society, which has a network of branches across Essex, pays 4% on their Children’s Regular Saver, which has a lower monthly minimum commitment of £5 per month – a rate that they have paid since 2015 – and can also be opened and managed by post. For parents looking for an account that doesn’t need a regular commitment, Nationwide pay 2.50% on their Future Saver account. If the parent also has a Nationwide account then that rate is boosted to 3.50%. However, the rate is reduced by 0.50% if you make more than one withdrawal a year. Relatives looking for an account with no restrictions should look at Virgin Money’s Young Saver which pays 2.25% and can be opened in their stores or by post. Accounts can be opened with just £1 too. Halifax’s Kid’s saver pays 2% and can be accessed via their branches and managed

COMPUTER RUNNING SLOW? If your computer is running slow you don’t necessarily have to replace it. Many people throw away perfectly good computers that just need a little work and perhaps a few upgrade parts. Older computers can often be greatly improved for a fraction of the cost of a new computer. Your computer may have a software or hardware problem slowing it down and this can be investigated. Hard drive faults are a very common cause of slow running computers and this is fairly easy to diagnose. Hard drives (even if not faulty) can be a performance restriction in a computer.

The best computer upgrade around these days is to upgrade the old style mechanical hard drive to a SSD (Solid State Drive). These have no moving parts and are a similar technology to USB Flash drives. SSDs make a huge difference in performance, even on computers that are several years old. If you would like further help or advice with this, please call DH Computing on the number opposite. DH Computing specialises in computer support for homes and small businesses.

BEAULIEU COMMUNITY CENTRE A Special Day for the Springfield Community

A

fter more than five years of discussion between countryside properties, springfield parish council, chelmsford city council, chelmsford diocese and the beaulieu community trust charity the new ‘beaulieu community centre’ was officially opened.

A GOOD DEAL OF HARD WORK LIES AHEAD!

It was several years ago that chelmsford city council approached springfield parish council to commence negotiations on how a new community with over 3,500 homes being constructed might achieve its ‘sense of place’. In the early stages of the project several consultation events were held within the community who identified a wish to have a ‘place to meet’, this finally led to the setting up of beaulieu community trust, an incorporated charitable organisation (bct cio) with a membership of 9 trustees. The charity has, since its inception in november 2015, worked tirelessly to reach the day of opening.

On the 28th september local dignitaries, m.P. Vicky ford, mayor of chelmsford yvonne spence, chairman of springfield parish council, susan sullivan and bishop of chelmsford, steven cotterell, together performed an official ribbon cutting to mark this special day in springfield. The community centre has been provided by countryside properties as part of their planning requirement, known as a s106 agreement, which means the facility comes to the community at no cost to the local people. Successful funding bids have helped to employ staff and install telecommunication equipment at the premises. A good deal of hard work lies ahead for the trustees of the bct cio, but this excellent new facility, in the heart of springfield will serve both our new and existing residents well. For details of the centre and bookings you can call 07778145958 or email secretary@beaulieutrust.co.uk
