WELCOME

Those of you who have been good and ‘endured’ a ‘Dry January’ will be really pleased that February has arrived! Do be careful though as you don’t want to undo all that hard work and effort! The weather seems to be getting colder and the mornings are particularly cold and icy. So please keep a watch on any older or vulnerable neighbours you may have who may struggle in these conditions. A friendly chat with a neighbour can make all the difference to someone who may not be able to get out. Here at Around Town we can’t believe that we are already on edition number 3 of our new Beaulieu Magazine. We are extremely pleased with the kind words from both advertisers and readers 4

alike about this magazine exclusively covering Beaulieu and Channels. We are always most grateful to all our advertisers and would encourage you to use them whenever possible. If you can mention Around Town that helps the advertisers gauge the response from advertising with us. Finally, we must thank all our contributors who write for this magazine. They are providing some very interesting editorial about your community. If you have something you would like to be included in this magazine then please get in touch with us. Until next month, wrap up warm!

From everyone at Around Town Magazines

LOCAL MP

I

Update From The Local MP

was very pleased to be able to take the Secretary of State for Health, Matthew Hancock MP, to visit the new Medical School at Anglia Ruskin University just before Christmas. They are making outstanding progress in training the next generation of GPs. This will make a huge difference in years to come. The Government’s Long Term Plan for the NHS has now been published, which brings a historic £20.5 billion increase in funding for the NHS over the next five years. The NHS Plan has been developed and driven forward by clinicians, patients and medical experts. At its heart is the principle that prevention is better than cure. The biggest increase in funding will go to primary and community care, especially to GP surgeries. These are the bedrock of the NHS, and we need to do much more to treat people out of hospital and help all to keep healthy in the first place. The Plan also provides for flagship improvements in areas such as cancer detection and treatment, cardiovascular disease and mental health. Many Chelmsford residents tell me how much they value the NHS so this is extremely good news for the future of our health service. There was also good news locally as we learned the outcome of a recent inspection by the CQC, the independent regulator of health and social care in England, at Sutherland Lodge GP Surgery. This is the largest surgery in the Chelmsford constituency. I know many people were concerned about the fact that the surgery had been put into special measures, which was also putting pressure onto other nearby GP Practices. Inspections are often stressful for those working in our schools or health service but they do help to identify areas where there are problems. This means concerns are not just swept under the carpet but can be addressed.

Improvements at Sutherland Lodge have now enabled it to move out of special measures and to attain a rating of ‘good’ in the domains of caring and responsive. Key issues regarding patient safety, especially those effecting medicines, prescriptions and hospital appointments have been addressed, which is good news. There has also been an increase in permanent staff. This turnaround is down to the hard work of many people including the team at Sutherland Lodge, the Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS England. There are still areas that require improvement, but this is a step in the right direction and most welcome progress. In the House of Commons, I introduced my first 10 Minute Rule Bill. Each day when the House is sitting, one MP gets a chance to propose a change to UK law on a single issue that they think could be improved. My Bill is in response to a request from Chelmsford’s postmen and women whom I met just before Christmas. Some housing developers have been fitting front doors with very low-level letter boxes. These cause problems for postal workers, as the repetitive bending results in back problems and other injuries. I’m suggesting that building regulations should be changed so that low level letter boxes are not fitted as standard in new developments. MPs from many parties have told me they support the Bill so perhaps it will be a moment of unity across the House of Commons. Of course, politicians deliver leaflets too so perhaps they should all declare an interest! The situation on Brexit is moving rapidly, by the time this is published the vote on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement will have occurred. I will endeavour to post updates on social media via Facebook and Twitter.

As ever, please do get in touch if you have questions or would like to raise any matters. You can contact me

STILL RUNNING WINDOWS 7? If you are still running Windows 7 on your computer you need to be aware that Microsoft support will cease in a years time. Windows 7 will still work but will no longer receive software updates from Microsoft. Normally your computer will automatically download and install software updates from Microsoft to fix bugs and problems. Most of these updates are security related. As security vulnerabilities are discovered, Microsoft quickly fixes them and sends out updates to secure your computer. After January 2020 Microsoft will no longer provide these updates

10

for Windows 7, so from that time Windows 7 could become more and more insecure over time. Windows 7 could be more vulnerable to malware and hacking. The solution is to upgrade to Windows 10 before the end of the year. Windows 10 is much more secure and fully updated. The good news is that most Windows 7 computers should be suitable for Windows 10. It is possible to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free online. If you would like any further help or advice on this, please call DH Computing on the numbers shown below.

DAN THE VICAR Why prayer doesn’ t “work” and why it’s not supposed to.

P

rayer doesn’t “work”. Fridges work. Calculators work. Central heating, compasses and motorbikes work. Prayer doesn’t “work” Mobile phones & solar panels work. Food mixers, cardiac monitors & combine harvesters work ….And if for whatever reason they don’t work there’ll be a mechanical failure that can be rectified if you have the right expertise because barring technical breakdowns there are things that “work”, you switch them on and off and with almost total predictability they work. Prayer doesn’t “work” Variable white goods and other household appliances

work. Hot tubs, toasters, laptops, lawnmowers, stereos, sex toys, games consoles, tan stands, deep fat fryers, air rifles, sowing machines all work. Plug them in, flick the switch, turn the handle, pull the trigger or whatever it might be and they work. They fall into the category of things that “work”. Part A meets part B and bingo it works Prayer doesn’t “work” It’s a different breed of thing altogether. All these other things, kettles, cars, strobe lights and amplifiers all have a clear dominant function. They do ‘A thing’. They have a linear sequence of mechanical functions that

have an expected, exclusive principal outcome. Prayer just isn’t like that. Prayer is not one thing that we do to another thing to make it do things. Prayer is conversation with God. More than that even, prayer is relationship with God. Prayer doesn’t “work”, it is a relationship with all it’s complexity. In prayer the whole range of emotions is open to us; joy, anger, anguish, frustration, elation, intrigue, wonder, confusion..... God’s relationship with groups of people and individuals in the bible is evidence enough that relationship with the divine is not straightforward.

B eau L ieu

Continued... There’ll be those who try to sell you the idea of prayer like it’s washing detergent or pain medication. “Take a dose and you’ll feel better” “Works on 99% of tough stains” Don’t settle for this kind of cheap marketing campaign. Prayer is popularly reduced to a duke box, vending machine, transactional kind of enterprise. As if you put your money in the slot, add the write sequence of digits and out pops a tune or some m&m’s. If your understanding of prayer has been shaped by that kind of expectation then prepare to stand by the machine

banging on the glass. Prayer doesn’t “work”. Don’t get me wrong. Things happen. Life can and does change because of prayer but prayer is not one thing that we do to another thing to make it do things. Prayer is relationship with God. Relationships take time and are as much about us investing in the other party than receiving from them. It’s about listening as much as speaking. It’s sometimes about the silences between conversations. It’s about answering as well as asking. It’s about posture

FEBRUARY 2019

and disposition. It’s about agreement and argument and affirmation and curiosity. Let us not settle for prayer like it’s some kind of pill for life’s aches and pains. Let us not treat prayer like it’s a faulty machine that frequently fails to spit out confectionary when we’re sure we typed in the right code. Instead, let us enter relationship with the divine. Let us make time to get to know the one to whom we speak. Let us ask, seek, knock, ponder and wrestle. Let us pray.

A TRIBE CALLED SWEAT

How’s it going so far? e are now on month two of 2019. For those who set goals, you’re now basically in one of three categories:

in the morning. When you get that done a few days in a row, add in some push-ups or planks. Then, just keep building from there…

1. You haven’t started yet. The holidays extended into January and you’re still feeling behind.

If you’ve already given up, ask yourself “WHY?”

2. You’ve already given up. 3. You’re cranking away with multiple daily wins in the book, and you’re excited to keep the momentum going. So, where do YOU stand? If you haven’t started yet, what are you waiting for? The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time time is today! Life is always going to throw curveballs and things will go unexpectedly… Just take a simple, small step. £1 saved everyday, from 01st January 1989, would now be about £15,000 cash if just saved, and approximately £30,000 if invested. If your goal was to start exercising in 2019, do 30 seconds of jumping jacks when you get up

Not just, “why did I give up?” Ask yourself, “WHY did I set this goal in the first place?” Your reason WHY is one of the most important and powerful things when it comes to goal achievement. When you have a powerful enough WHY obstacles and excuses will fade away… If you’re cranking away, CONGRATS! Keep the momentum going. Make sure you recognise your wins and give yourself praise for what you’ve accomplished and the progress you’re making. Never underestimate the power of small wins and rewards… Just don’t get cocky and please don’t celebrate your successes with things that completely contradict your goals (e.g., meet your weekly exercise goal so you celebrate with a piece of cake, save £500 and spend £600!). 2019 is still just getting underway... How’s it looking for you so far? Reply back and let me know. :-)

ITS OK CAMPAIGN Its ok not to be ok Firstly we are excited to announce Dr Sara Kayat as our Campaign Ambassador. Dr Sara is best known for being in the tv show GP’s Behind Closed Doors and also numerous appearances on ITV’s This Morning. Sara also gives some words of advice on Mental Health

W

hilst evolutionarily the purpose of stress was related to triggering the fight or flight response when confronted with a survival situation, in modern day life, there is little benefit in feeding stress. We have long been aware of the role that stress plays in exacerbating anxiety and depression, but more recently research has also focussed on its effects on physical health. Studies have uncovered a link between stress and cardiovascular disease and have suggested that it may be as important a risk factor as smoking and high blood pressure.

Other lifestyle measures that may help include reducing your alcohol intake, ensuring you are getting enough sleep and having a well-balanced diet. More research is going into how diet may affect mental health, and the concept of a “brain-gut axis” is becoming more widely accepted.

...IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGERS.

Certainly, if these measures aren’t helping your stress, it is important to speak to your doctor, as you may benefit from talking therapies and other psychological input.

Stress can be multifactorial but a good first step in managing it, is to identify your triggers. Unsurprisingly given that we work the longest hours in Europe, work is one of the biggest contributors to stress in the UK. As such, maintaining a good work-life balance is paramount, and keeping an open dialogue with colleagues and managers about mental health is important in maintaining wellbeing in the workplace, as well as making sure you carve out time to do things you enjoy, and see people that make you happy. We know that cardiovascular exercise is also important in tackling anxiety, stress and low mood, by increasing you’re your dopamine and serotonin levels, but other forms of exercise like yoga is also beneficial in promoting relaxation techniques like meditation, breathing and mindfulness, all of which have been shown to help manage stress. 20

appy New Year to all of the Beaulieu residents, thank you for all of your support throughout January and making great use of the centre! We have been extremely busy taking bookings for parties and regular classes which are filling up fast for 2019. With which we are pleased to say we now run 61 classes per week over 7days, we are thrilled with the response the centre is receiving from you as local residents and general public from surrounding areas. One thing we are extremely passionate about is ensuring that we are engaging with local residents and giving back to the community whenever we can. You may have seen on our social media page that we will be supporting a “holiday hamper appeal working alongside the Chelmsford Child and Family Well-being service to put together holiday hampers for local school aged children and their families who may struggle during the school

holidays. The community centre will be collecting and storing food items between the week of Monday 4th February and Monday 11th February, these items will them be passed onto local families as part of a hamper. If you can help us support this fantastic cause please donate during these times, we would be so grateful for your support. For more information please get in touch with Emma or Meg on 07778145958 or email Kirsty. roberts@barnardos.org.uk We would welcome your suggestions and ideas for any community engagement evenings that you would like to see here at the community centre, if there is something specific you would like us to look at putting together please do get in touch and let us know! We would welcome your ideas Thank you again for your continued support!

THE CRISIS COACH

I

Fresh and promising new year

t’s 2019! We are underway in this new, fresh and promising year. I didn’t set any new year resolutions, January is a terribly overrated time of year to make life changes! Instead I’ve been working on me. That sounds odd to anyone except to every parent who had a life before children, had no idea that those little precious moppets would not bend around our afore created lifestyle, and so end up in a hand-to-mouth existence of doing whatever the hell we can to look like a functioning parent, member of society, reputable working person, environmentalist, equal rights guru befitting of the multi-faceted roles that society expects of every living being over the age of 25 to be! This working on me thing is basically peeling back the layers or roles that I try to fit and to reconnect with who I actually am, what I actually want to achieve, and what sort of legacy I want to leave to my moppets and their future generations. I’m a life coach and NLP Master Practitioner. I retrained after having my sons and while I’ve been qualified for a couple of years, I’m just getting around to finding time in the schedule to be an NLP Therapist and life coach. I call myself “The Crisis Coach” because being in a crisis is something that I know a fair amount about: as a mum (crisis 1), finding my place in the world after giving up a finance management career that didn’t bend around my children’s needs (crisis 2),

26

and I’m an ‘Autie’ mum (my son has autism – crisis 3, 4 , 5, 6… etc etc!). We have had to tackle a few crises along the way of navigating an out of date ‘best fits no-one’ special needs system! NLP – what is that? You ask… Well its stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and in my own summary it looks at how we function mentally, more importantly what we do and how we think when we are successful, and how we can sabotage our own success through thinking ourselves into negative behaviours and patterns. NLP is an effective tool to enable you to understand how you think, to identify what you really want, and what you are currently doing that is creating a barrier to that success. As a student and as a therapy tool it is a positive and empowering experience, which can help in all areas of your life – work, home, relationships, overcoming fears and phobias, changing habits… the possibilities are endless! And so is the literature. I have spent far too long thinking that I’d like to learn more and read more on this topic (trust me the qualification is just an open door to whole new world of insight) and so by committing to share what I learn with an audience, I think that I might pick up a damn book or two! As a closing comment I wonder what your New Year resolutions are? Are they getting you closer to the person you want to be… do you know who you want that future self to be?
