Sending a shoebox is a very practical way of showing love to others and I know, from firsthand experience, the difference a simple gift makes to children, young people, families and whole communities. Might I please ask if you and your family, your place of work, school, club, group, organisation or business might be able to collect the following items for the 2018 shoebox appeal? • Something Fun: Small Football; Dominoes; Whistles; Toy Car; Harmonica. • Something To Love: Cuddly Toy; Teddies; Barbie Doll; Finger Puppet; Wind Up Toy. • Something Creative: Chalk; Crayons; Colouring Books; Play Doh; Small Sewing Kit. • Something To Keep Clean: Toothbrushes; Toothpaste; Soap; Flannels; Combs; Brushes. • Something To Put On: Hats; Scarves; Gloves; Head Bands; Small Bag. • Something To Learn With: Pens; Pencils; Sharpeners; Paper; Solar Calculator. • Something Homemade: Letter/Card or Photograph from the person/group who fill the shoebox.

It’s so simple to get involved with OCC and I know how much pleasure many people in Billericay receive from: collecting the above items; knitting scarves and hats; and putting a shoebox together. Your contribution, however small, is greatly appreciated. You can bring your collected items/ shoeboxes to Emmanuel Church (Laindon Road, CM12 9LD) on Friday 16 November from 19.00 21.00 or Saturday 17 November from 9.30 - 13.00 and stay for our ‘Shoebox Filling Extravaganza’ coffee and doughnuts provided! We also invite you to our ‘Shoebox Celebration Service’ on Sunday 18 November at 10.00 am. Leaflets are available from me/Emmanuel and you can find more information and downloads on our website at emmanuel-church.info I have been a team leader on shoebox distribution teams to Belarus, Crimea and the Ukraine and I’d be happy to come and speak with your group, show some slides and tell some stories. This is a prayer we often use as we gather the shoeboxes together at our Sunday ‘Shoebox Celebration Service’: Heavenly Father, we thank you for the fun we’ve had in getting these shoeboxes ready: they are a sign of the many good things you have given us. We offer them to you with our thanks and our love. Be with the children and young people who receive these gifts. Shower them with your love; fill their lives with hope; and may the joy of Jesus be made real to them this Christmas time. In your precious name we pray. Amen. Thank you for your continued support.

Nature Notes Written by Neil Sumner
Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 Each season brings different sensations to enjoy in the natural world. In autumn, in our gardens, parks and nature reserves we enjoy colourful leaves, fungi and berries and smells of ripened fruit. Parties of Scandinavian thrushes come to the hedgerows and other small birds, including the tiny Goldcrest, migrate here to find food and shelter. Largely unseen are rodents feeding on nuts and berries to build up fat reserves to see them through the winter and Foxes start to establish their territories with high pitched barks during the night. Probably the biggest impact of autumn is the trees as their leaves turn from dull green to various shades of yellow, orange and red. The importance of trees, especially, in our towns and cities, is much more than just visually enhancing the street scene and open spaces. Trees provide us with oxygen, store carbon and help to clean our air by filtering out toxins and pollutants. In the ground they reduce flooding by regulating the flow of water and holding the soil so preventing erosion. And they are temperature regulators too. I recently met someone who moved into a house next to two fine oak trees which were removed by a neighbour within a few years. The house became noticeably hotter after the removal of these natural air conditioners. Trees also are good for our mental health and well being. We have a natural affnity w ith t hem a nd w alking a mongst woodlands has been proven as an anti-dote to stress and depression. As with so many elements of our natural world, trees are under pressure. Because of the leaves it drops, the light it filters or the space it takes, a tree is sometimes perceived as a nuisance. New housing developments leave little room for them, and many front gardens have been paved and their trees have gone. Trees do outgrow their space or become diseased but a professional tree surgeon can often cut back, rather than remove, the tree so it still safely performs its essential services. In response to the loss of many trees and desire to protect those remaining, many towns in Essex, including Billericay, have created Tree Wardens to promote the value of the trees, look for threats to them. New Tree Wardens are always needed so if you might want to be one and so help to conserve the natural environment within the Town please get in touch. Neilsumner123@aol.com

What makes a beautiful smile?
t FACEmed when it comes to transforming your smile we believe in starting with the basics. Looking after your teeth and giving them the time they deserve plays the biggest part in getting you on the right track for that showstopping smile. Transforming your smile is not a one treatment wonder, it’s a journey that starts with good general oral health and maintenance of your precious teeth to researching your options in order to optimise what you already have. It is not just ‘straight teeth’ that make a wondrous smile stand out, it’s the full package. Regular dental and hygienist appointments are essential with an experienced dentist who you can trust and who will explain all of the options available to you and not just what they can do. Short-term orthodontics such as Invisalign are the cornerstone to contemporary smile transformations. The majority of clients looking
to straighten crooked teeth are eligible for the clear aligner system. Invisalign is the discreet easy-to-manage option involving minimal invasive work with maximum results. Your visits to the dentist are few and far between, meanwhile in the comfort of your own home you can exchange your aligners on a regular basis and watch your smile transform before your own eyes. For the few who are not best suited to Invisalign or with complex cases, long-term orthodontic treatment plans such as full braces or implant reconstruction whereby an artificial tooth/teeth are placed in order to replace missing teeth may be an alternative. White teeth are a vital part of your dazzling smile. Available as a standalone treatment or as part of a wider cosmetic plan, teeth whitening such as Enlighten can help remove stains and brighten your smile, gently and safely by up to 16 shades. At FACEmed we work with only the most experienced dentists and hygienists who each have their own specialist background from expert periodontal hygiene advice to Platinum Provider clear brace/aligner Specialists and Implantologists. The practice is CQC registered and fully equipped with state-of-the-art scanners (no more gooey impressions!) and microscopes.
To find out more about your smile transformation options, enquire at FACEmed on 01268 833680 or email enquiries@facemed.co.uk.

But if you’re not happy with how yours looks, and you’re hiding it from the world, then it’s time to do something about it. Enjoy a future of straight teeth, heightened confidence and greater oral hygiene with expert dental services from FACEmed and Invisalign, the world’s most advanced clear aligner system.

negotiated between the EU and the Government before our exit date of 29th March 2019. I believe that the Chequers Agreement suffers from some significant shortcomings, not least because the ‘Common Rule Book’ would hinder the UK signing free trade agreements with countries outside the EU by obliging imports from these countries to keep to these rules.
John Baron Conservative Parliamentary MP For Basildon and Billericay
Since the declaration of Article 50, the clock has been ticking on our departure from the EU. However, what that exit looks like remains up for grabs, to be
Before
As the Prime Minister has rightly said on many occasions, ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’. Moreover, ‘no deal’ is a misnomer – World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules are there for us to fall back on if necessary. Many countries use these rules to trade easily and profitably with countries outside the EU, and it should be no different for Britain.
A free trade deal with the EU remains the preferred option. This is the arrangement put forward by the Prime Minister at Lancaster House, Mansion House and Florence, and I still hope that we will be able to proceed on this basis. After all, a good deal is in both the interests of the UK and the European Union. However, if this is not possible to achieve, MPs will have to make a set of difficult decisions. The overriding message of the electorate in the 2016 referendum was to leave the EU. By many definitions, Chequers measures up to this, even if I am not comfortable with all of it. If the Opposition supports a second referendum – which I strongly oppose – this would add a wholly new dimension.

Savings Roundup Interest rates on savings on the rise There were two significant movements in the savings market at the end of September which were good news for savers. The first came on the 27th September when Marcus launched. Marcus is part of Goldman Sachs and is named after its founder, Marcus Goldman, who set the Bank up in 1869. While Goldman’s is famed for being the bank of multimillionaires with a $10m minimum entry point, Marcus will let you open an account with just £1. With a launch rate of 1.50%, which is the best easy access savings rate since March 2016, many savers are expected to do just that. Admittedly, the account comes with a 0.15% bonus that is payable for the first 12 months, however, even without it, the account comfortably makes our best buy tables with only Charter Savings (1.40%), Kent Reliance (1.37%) and Virgin Money (1.36%) currently beating the 1.35% on offer after the bonus expires. While the Marcus account can only be opened online, it has much going for it, aside from the attractive interest rate. The internet application is slick and easy to complete – within 5 minutes. The £1 minimum balance means it’s open to even the smallest of savers. It pays interest monthly, which will appeal to income seekers, and any change of interest rate comes with two months warning before it is implemented.
30
The significance of the move is that Marcus is looking to raise high volumes deposits from savers. Whereas many of the new banks have only been looking to raise a few hundred million of the £1.5trillion savings market, Marcus is understood to want much more. This means we expect the competitive rate to be around for a while and we expect to see other banks raise their interest rates to respond. Islamic Banks on the move The second move that was important for savers was that Islamic Banks, BLME and Al Rayan, increased their rates on 18 months (BLME), 2 and 3 Year Fixed Bonds (Al Rayan). Nothing new here I can hear observant savers say! That’s true, Islamic Banks are often at the top of the tables due to some UK savers being uncomfortable with the fact they pay ‘expected profit’ rather than interest. This is despite the FSCS protection and that none have failed to pay the expected profit rate yet. The significance is that they’ve been left behind with a number of mainstream rivals either paying similar rates or overtaking them. This move just brings them back to what’s often been natural positioning. What it means though is that we are likely to see a further response from some of those banks and we expect to see a consolidation around these price points and possibly a few breakout slightly higher. Given that we have now seen a (pretty much) 0.20% rise in rates
across all products since the turn of the year, equivalent to 10% rise or more in some categories, any consolidation or further rises will be a boon for savers in a market that has been a desert for the past few years. Upgraded website A couple of months ago, I mentioned that we were investing in upgrading the website. The new look went live at the end of September and we now have a cleaner, more modern look and feel. As well as this, we’ve made a number of enhancements with the site now covering: • Business savings • Six banking providers per category • 18 month fixed rate bonds with a dedicated page • Videos on helpful topics like the Financial Services Compensation Scheme There’s more still to come with a banking directory under construction, which will provide detailed insight in to all the providers in the market. This is in response to feedback from a number of readers who have asked about some of the newer banks, who they are and whether they are safe. With around 200 banks and building societies operating in the UK, this is quite a piece of work. The first banks will go live this month with more being added on a regular basis. We’d love to hear your feedback so please do let us know – drop us a line on the website or email us at hello@thesavings.guru
Savings Guru supports Billericay charity BOSP with football partnership For the 2017/18 season, Savings Guru is sponsoring Billericay Town forward Jake Robinson. Last season the striker scored 57 goals and this year Savings Guru have pledged £10 per goal to Billericay based charity BOSP (Brighter Opportunities through Supported Play). BOSP look after over 600 children and young people with very serious disabilities all over Essex and rely 100% on donations. Jake has continued this season where he left off last year and has 12 goals already to his name! That’s £120 already for BOSP and we hope that Jake continues to find the net so that we write an even bigger cheque for BOSP. What are the best rates currently? The market can move quickly, so we always recommend that you check our website for the latest rates. At time of going to print, our best paying personal savings rates are:

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB Money raised by Billericay Mayflower Rotarians at summer events is already being spent on good causes both here and in some of the world’s disaster areas. Thanks to the generosity of local people the £4,700 raised at the highly successful SummerFest at Sun Corner plus another £2,000 from a Jazz in the Garden event at Little Burstead sent the July Rotary year off to a flying start.
These figures plus cash already in the pot meets a huge “shopping list” including, among others, a major £11,000 boost for local school projects, help for families of handicapped children and emergency donations to areas like the Indian flood disaster. The busy club that raised up to £50,000 in a single year – and had fun doing it -- is now preparing for its biggest challenge, Billericay Christmas Market on Sunday December 2 when a crowd of more than 20,000 is expected to throng the High Street. Members are also preparing for another success story as the satellite club it launched earlier this year is gaining members under chairman Lynn Talbot and is hoping to become a club in its own right as The Rotary Club of Billericay Town in the new year. Want to know about Billericay Mayflower or the satellite club? Want to share productive leisure hours and play a major role in the Billericay community? Contact www.mayflowerrotary.org or secretary@mayflowerrotary.org.
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB At a presentation at the September meeting of the Lions Club of Billericay, the wives and partners of the Lions Club members, donated £1100 to Carers Choices, who provide day care services to those in need and their carers. All the monies were raised by their ladies from their activities over the past year, including their table top sales at the Reading Rooms in Billericay High Street. In the photograph, Lisa Hull (left), wife of last years Club President, presented the cheque to a delighted Angela Allum, The Silver Birch Centre Manager, who thanked the ladies for all their fund raising work and said that the monies would greatly assist in the continued work of the three centres across South Essex. For details of Lions events and tickets, or if you are interested in joining, please have a look at our website www.billericaylions.com
Looking forward, we are back into the regular routine of our monthly social/sports events and reviewing donation requests. As ever, we are looking to attract new members who are up for a bit of fun and looking to do some extra-ordinary things - things which you would not typically arrange with your normal mates! Check us out at www.facebook.com/billericayroundtable and www.billericayroundtable. co.uk or contact us directly on bepartofit@billericayroundtable.co.uk. We would also really like to hear about any special causes which we might be able to offer monetary support for – no matter how small or large the value, we treat all cases individually and in confidence. We are a registered charity and have been able to help many local people over the years and we want to continue so – please check out the request form here: www. billericayroundtable.co.uk/funding
