What makes a beautiful smile?
t FACEmed when it comes to transforming your smile we believe in starting with the basics. Looking after your teeth and giving them the time they deserve plays the biggest part in getting you on the right track for that showstopping smile. Transforming your smile is not a one treatment wonder, it’s a journey that starts with good general oral health and maintenance of your precious teeth to researching your options in order to optimise what you already have. It is not just ‘straight teeth’ that make a wondrous smile stand out, it’s the full package. Regular dental and hygienist appointments are essential with an experienced dentist who you can trust and who will explain all of the options available to you and not just what they can do. Short-term orthodontics such as Invisalign are the cornerstone to contemporary smile transformations. The majority of clients looking
to straighten crooked teeth are eligible for the clear aligner system. Invisalign is the discreet easy-to-manage option involving minimal invasive work with maximum results. Your visits to the dentist are few and far between, meanwhile in the comfort of your own home you can exchange your aligners on a regular basis and watch your smile transform before your own eyes. For the few who are not best suited to Invisalign or with complex cases, long-term orthodontic treatment plans such as full braces or implant reconstruction whereby an artificial tooth/teeth are placed in order to replace missing teeth may be an alternative. White teeth are a vital part of your dazzling smile. Available as a standalone treatment or as part of a wider cosmetic plan, teeth whitening such as Enlighten can help remove stains and brighten your smile, gently and safely by up to 16 shades. At FACEmed we work with only the most experienced dentists and hygienists who each have their own specialist background from expert periodontal hygiene advice to Platinum Provider clear brace/aligner Specialists and Implantologists. The practice is CQC registered and fully equipped with state-of-the-art scanners (no more gooey impressions!) and microscopes.
To find out more about your smile transformation options, enquire at FACEmed on 01268 833680 or email enquiries@facemed.co.uk.

september Savings Roundup Has the Bank of England Base Rate increase been good for savers? Last month, we went to print just before the Bank of England met to decide whether to raise the base rate for only the second time in a decade. We had a hunch that they might not, although the market was pricing in a rise, given that we’d been in similar positions in previous months. We got that bit wrong, but we’ve (very sadly) been right in our predictions of what it means for savers. We said ‘the larger banks and building societies still have more savings deposits than they need and we think they are likely to pass on little or none of the benefit of any base rate increase to their savers, instead using it as an opportunity to improve their profits.’ We predicted that ‘savers hoping for a base rate increase to improve their returns are therefore likely to be disappointed’. Lloyds Bank has only increased rates on two accounts, Barclays has increased its Everyday Saver by just 0.05% and HSBC, Natwest and Santander have passed on only 0.10% to customers of their Flexible Saver, Instant Saver and Everyday Saver respectively. Even

backed
National Savings & Investments (NS&I) hasn’t been able to pass on the full increase. NS&I have announced that they will increase some rates from 1st October but these range from just 0.05% to 0.15%. Building societies, who are run for their members benefit, rather than to maximise profits, have been just as bad as the big banks. 29 out of 45 have still to announce any changes. Only 32 financial institutions have changed their savings rates and only three have passed on the full 0.25% rate – Beverley, Holmesdale and Swansea Building Societies.
new firms since our last column – and we believe there are now over 40 firms at some stage of the process. We have been asked a lot this year as to why we haven’t seen many of these come to market yet. The simple answer is that the average time to go from the initial meeting with the regulator to being authorised and live in the savings market is 27 months. We anticipate that 2019 and 2020 will see many of these prospective banks come to fruition with 2020 likely to be the high point before numbers drop back.
When will we see more new banks come to market?
That being said, we are expecting to see some activity this year with Orchard Funding Group announcing last month that it is hopeful of receiving its banking licence by the end of 2018. Marcus, a new arm of Goldman Sachs, which is already live in the US with savings accounts has announced it is open in the UK to employees and expects to be live nationwide in the coming months. With an initial interest rate on its savings account of 1.50%, it is likely to be very popular if that is the rate it launches with given the best buy is currently 1.36% from Virgin Money.
The list of prospective new banks seems to grow by the day - we’ve heard from another two

At the top of our best buy tables, we have seen a host of new names takeover top spots in the past month with only one category (5 Year) remaining unchanged since the start of August. While the providers have changed, the rates haven’t moved significantly. The best increase has been 0.09% on notice accounts with 0.06% (2 Year) and 0.05% rises on 3 Year and instant savings. Otherwise, our tables are largely unchanged.
banking and is now almost two years on from its original announcement that it was seeking to gain authorisation. Civilised Bank, who had to surrender their licence in April this year, have hired a wave of new bankers, including former Harrods Bank CEO, Mark Stephens, for what looks like another assault on the market. While we don’t expect every prospective bank will come to fruition, we believe that a significant proportion of those firms looking at a banking licence will make it to market. What are the best rates currently? The market can move quickly, so we always recommend that you check our website for the latest rates. Fun Walk Trust organises the whole event. Last year, nearly 100 local causes and charities raised £120,000 – bringing the total raised by the Fun Walk to over £964,000 since its inception in 2002. Many local charities now see this as their main fundraising event of the year.

A unique feature of the Walk is that, because of the generosity of corporate and individual sponsors, each charity and good cause will receive a bonus over and above what they raise themselves. In 2017 for example, for every £100 raised in sponsorship, £55 was added by way of a bonus. This year’s ‘bonus pot’ is as strong as ever, with sponsors already pledging over £40,000. This amount looks set to rise, as some
have yet to decide how much they will contribute. Sponsors so far are: Swan Housing Association, c2c, Abellio Greater Anglia, Brown & Carroll, Hallmark Care Homes, Tunnelcraft Ltd, Leonardo MW Ltd, McDonald’s, RSE Building Services, and others. Our thanks go to Barleylands Farm for hosting the event, Hallmark Care Homes for hosting the reception, and Waitrose for helping run the event. If you know of a project that would benefit, then do come and join in – it is not too late to register. For more information please contact the Walk on 07544 324 218 or on funwalk@ hotmail.co.uk – you will then be sent a Factsheet and registration forms. RECIPE Raspberry Jam
Ingredients: 1kg fresh raspberries Juice of 1 lemon 1kg jam sugar
Method: 1. Make sure you have saved up enough jars to fill with your jam and sterilize these before you start. 2. Put a small plate in the freezer to chill. 3. Place half of the raspberries into a preserving pan and add the lemon juice. 4. Mash the berries down using a potato masher and then leave to cook gently for about 5 minutes. 5. Using a sieve, drain the juice off the berries and firmly work the pulp through the sieve with a wooden spoon until you are left with just the seeds. 6. Tip the juice and the pulp back into the preserving pan and stir in the sugar.
7. Bring it to the boil and allow to bubble for 5 minutes. 8. Remove the mixture from the heat and pop a little of the jam onto the plate from the freezer. 9. Push your finger into it – it should wrinkle and look like jam. If it doesn’t then you need to boil it for a further couple of minutes and test again (don’t forget to put the plate back in the freezer). 10. As the mixture is cooling, give it a little stir. 11. Pour into the jars and seal. 12. The jam will keep unopened for one year and make sure you store in the fridge once opened.

ALL ABOUT
B.A.R.K Just imagine. What if there was a town where… • Residents had worked together to improve safety of each other by providing free first aid courses. • Residents posted online because they found they had free time and wanted to help a local charity. • If you had an unexpected tyre puncture, someone came and changed it for you in the pouring rain. • Residents looked out for others in trouble and helped without being asked. • Unconnected people donated money to enable a young teacher to voluntarily teach in the Solomon Islands to help break the cycle of poverty so many people experience there. • Strangers lent each other items that are requested for a one-off event.
• People experienced a surprise random act of kindness and pledged to pay it forward. This is Billericay! The kindness revolution continues. These are all stories that you can read about on the BARK facebook page. A random act of kindness is a selfless act performed by kind people to either help or cheer up a random stranger, for no reason other than to make people happier. These can be completely spontaneous or planned in advance. Some acts can cost the giver in money or time or effort but there are many that cost nothing. Examples could be: • Leave money on vending machine or pay for someone. • Bake a cake or biscuits for a neighbour. • Leave flowers on a random doorstep.
• Pick up litter in public places. • Let someone go in front of you in a queue. • Give a stranger a compliment. • Smile If you have experienced a BARK, please post it on the facebook page so that others can see what is happening and how much simple acts can help. If you have offered a BARK, please also post information so that we can all read about ideas and actions taken. If you have had an idea and want others to help, post it on the facebook page to see who can. BARK- Billericay Acts of Random Kindness
B.A.R.K’S WISHING LINE The idea is that wishes are gathered from older people and the community are challenged to make these wishes come true. Wishes are advertised in public areas and wishers and granters are put in touch to make them come true. As this is growing, they are in need of a third person to help with the running of it. They are also ready to go into other care homes so more residents are able to make their wishes. If you are able to help then you can contact us by email on billericaywishingline@gmail.com

Oyez!” Then, having got everyone’s attention, they announced the time of town meetings and other items of interest to the people. Even after printed newspapers came along, you could hear the voice of a newspaper boy crying out: “Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” Then he would shout out the day’s headlines, hoping to get the attention of those who were passing by so that they would buy a newspaper. Hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 40) to tell how a messenger would spread the Good News of the coming of the Messiah. John the Baptist was the messenger Isaiah spoke about. John the Baptist was a very popular figure and amassed a great following, but he always told the people the Good News about Jesus (Mark 1:7): “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am. He is so much greater, I am not even worthy to untie the straps on his sandals.”
www.billericaychurches.org
Many thought John the Baptist was strange (which he was, living in the desert and surviving on locusts and wild honey). His message was unpopular. He told people of the need to repent (turn away) from their wrong doing, be baptised and to follow God. Many became angry with him. In fact, John ended up being beheaded because of some of the things he said. It’s not always easy sharing the Good News of Jesus with others. But just as John was faithful in bringing the Good News of Jesus to the people of his day, each of us, who would label ourselves ‘Christian’, are called to be God’s messenger to share the Good News of Jesus in our day. If you haven’t heard about the Good News of Jesus, or you are not quite sure about what you believe as a Christian, then the Alpha Course might be just what you are looking for. You may have heard about Alpha on social media or seen adverts on buses or on the tube. Alpha is a place to discover more about the Christian faith. Each week we address a key issue of life from a Christian perspective, followed by a discussion, an opportunity to ask any question you want, express opinions or, alternatively, you are free just to sit and listen. An Alpha Course at Emmanuel starts on Sunday 30 September at 6.00 pm. We begin with afternoon tea and the talks begin at 6.30 pm - we finish promptly at 8.00pm. We’d love to have you with us - even if it is only for the introductory session: ‘Is There More To Life Than This?’ If you would like to know more, do get in touch with me (details below) or contact us by email alpha@ billericaychurches.org or leave a message with the Church Offce on 01277 658055. Good News is worth sharing and, in a world where Good News is often in short supply, the Good News of Jesus, of love and mercy and forgiveness, is a welcome antidote to the sadness and cynicism that surrounds us in so many ways. So … what are you waiting for?

Nature Notes Written by Neil Sumner
Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 It was a beautiful morning earlier this month, windless and sunny. I looked at the horse chestnut tree across the road from our house, noting how long the shadows were becoming in the shortening days. Some of the tree’s outer leaves started to move at random, and then small birds flittered quickly in and out from the dark dense green. They were a moving feeding party of mixed tit species supplemented with a few Chiffchaffs, busily putting on fat reserves to see themselves through the winter. Then a small brown bird flew up into the air from a bare twig and alighted on a TV aerial, perching upright, flicking its wings and twitching its head while it consumed an insect. Using my binoculars (carefully, to avoid accusations of peering into bedroom windows) I focused on it and found it was a Spotted Flycatcher. A nice record for the housing estate where we live, aided by us being lucky enough to be next to a nature reserve. I was pleased at the sighting but sad too, as this is one of many birds that were common in Essex for centuries, but no longer. As with the Turtle Dove that used to purr from this same aerial in summer, it is just an occasional migrant. And it is not just migrant wildlife that is missing. The butterflies and bees in our garden are much fewer and the Hedgehog no longer comes. We are given the statistics again and again about the declines of our wildlife in our towns, in the woods and on the farms. It is true that there are many success stories of restorations through the hard work of conservationists but the overall trend in numbers and diversity is down. That is why I will be joining Chris Packham’s People’s Walk for Wildlife on the 22nd of September. It’s making a point, something we can all do. Expressing a real concern about what Chris calls the normalisation of these saddening statistics. I am going because the more of us that go then the greater the expression of concern. Please check this website, watch the video, make the time to go, make it a family day out perhaps – most of all, help us to make the politicians listen and feel compelled to act. https://www.chrispackham.co.uk/the-peoples-walkfor-wildlife

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB Money raised by Billericay Mayflower Rotarians at summer events is already being spent on good causes both here and in some of the world’s disaster areas. Thanks to the generosity of local people the £4,700 raised at the highly successful SummerFest at Sun Corner plus another £2,000 from a Jazz in the Garden event at Little Burstead sent the July Rotary year off to a flying start.
These figures plus cash already in the pot meets a huge “shopping list” including, among others, a major £11,000 boost for local school projects, help for families of handicapped children and emergency donations to areas like the Indian flood disaster. The busy club that raised up to £50,000 in a single year – and had fun doing it -- is now preparing for its biggest challenge, Billericay Christmas Market on Sunday December 2 when a crowd of more than 20,000 is expected to throng the High Street. Members are also preparing for another success story as the satellite club it launched earlier this year is gaining members under chairman Lynn Talbot and is hoping to become a club in its own right as The Rotary Club of Billericay Town in the new year. Want to know about Billericay Mayflower or the satellite club? Want to share productive leisure hours and play a major role in the Billericay community? Contact www.mayflowerrotary.org or secretary@mayflowerrotary.org.
BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB I hope you managed to come and see us during the Billericay Volunteer Day exhibition at the Library.
I also really hope you managed to come along to our 8th Billericay Beer Festival at Hannakins Farm Community Centre, and that you had as much fun as we did. To mark the 100th anniversary of Lions being founded, local Clubs funded the creation of a Centennial Path at Barrow Farm, a purpose built riding centre (between Chelmsford and Brentwood) designed to make riding accessible for people with special needs and disabilities. The Lions Centennial Path is now fully open, complete with plaques commemorating our Centenary. We are sure this path will help to enrich lives through riding in a more natural environment. For details of Lions events and tickets, or if you are interested in joining, please have a look at our website www.billericaylions.com
Looking forward, we are back into the regular routine of our monthly social/sports events and reviewing donation requests. As ever, we are looking to attract new members who are up for a bit of fun and looking to do some extra-ordinary things - things which you would not typically arrange with your normal mates! Check us out at www.facebook.com/billericayroundtable and www.billericayroundtable. co.uk or contact us directly on bepartofit@billericayroundtable.co.uk. We would also really like to hear about any special causes which we might be able to offer monetary support for – no matter how small or large the value, we treat all cases individually and in confidence. We are a registered charity and have been able to help many local people over the years and we want to continue so – please check out the request form here: www. billericayroundtable.co.uk/funding PLEASE MENTION AROUND TOWN MAGAZINE WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS
