R AYLEI G H ROTARY CLUB Welcome again to the Rotary section of Rayleigh Around Town magazine. I hope that you all had a Happy Christmas. The last month has been a typical one for the Rotary Club of Rayleigh Mill – a combination of fun, fundraising and charitable work. Fun and fundraising were combined when the 60’s/70’s band ‘Wheelz’ – mainly made up of Rayleigh Mill Rotarians – starred at the Inner Wheel Club of Rayleigh Mill’s fundraising dance which was enjoyed by more than 100 people and raised over £900 for Inner Wheel charities. Rotarians held a collection at the switching on of the Rayleigh Christmas lights to support a further £200 donation to the Philippines disaster appeal. Pre-Christmas fun with partners included a trip to the Christmas markets in Cologne, Germany and also our annual Christmas dinner dance at the Arlington Rooms. A fund raising Casino Night is to take place at Rayleigh Lanes snooker club on 11th January open to non members with £15 tickets which includes a buffet and a £5 gaming chips voucher. Call John Culwick on 01702 201439 if you would like to join us. We have just donated £2000 to the Africa Sand Dams Foundation (ASDF) to enable a project in Kenya to be completed which will provide the local community with 20 million litres of clean water a year. In Kenya, many women and children walk over eight hours a day to collect water which is often unclean. Children in many cases are unable to go to school, so their education suffers and the women do not have time to work in their local communities. £150 has also been given to the local ‘Family in Need’ appeal. The club is currently trying to complete sponsorship arrangements for the Concert in the Park. After 16 successful years, concerts have not taken place for the last two years due to lack of sponsors. We are hoping for a better situation in 2014. If any company wishes to be involved in one of Southend’s biggest events which would take place in June see our own website www.rotary-club.org.uk or contact Andrew Shackleton on 01702 201783.
RAYLEIGH LIONS CLUB The Lions Club of Rayleigh are actively looking to increase their membership to assist in raising funds for the Community, Charities both local and internationally. Our club is a group of people who wish to serve the community - to give something back. We want like-minded men and women to contact us so we can do more. Initially we welcome individuals to become involved, without commitment, to get to know each other. If we get on together we will then consider enrolment as a member We meet for Charity/Business meetings on the 1st Tuesday of each month, and on the 3rd Tuesday have a social meeting, which could be Bowling, a meal or just a talk from a guest speaker (cheese, biscuits and wine may also be on the cards). At our social meetings partners are welcome to enjoy the fellowship of our club. Anyone aged 18 or over can apply to be considered for membership .We believe in recognizing a member’s priorities: family first, work second and Lions third. Lions derive tremendous satisfaction and fun. Raising charitable funds is very fulfilling, with events such as raffling Easter Eggs from local public houses etc , Discos, Fetes and Fairs. But it is not all too serious. There are social events, such as a Christmas Meal, an annual Charter Night anniversary dinner dance, guest nights and an annual meal to celebrate the change of President in June. As a Lions club member, you’ll join a local group of service-minded men and women who are doing local volunteer work to support your community – right now. You’ll also become a member of Lions Clubs International, a respected international organization, a leader in your local community and a friend to people in need. To find out more how you could having fun whilst raising funds please contact our membership committee on 01702 589419 or email membership.rayleighlions@gmail.com Looking forward to hearing from you!

Happy New Year! Welcome Around Towners to the January edition of Rayleigh’s newest community magazine. We at Around Town HQ have had our fill of turkey, trees and wrapping paper for one year, but hope you all enjoyed your festive season and didn’t over indulge! January, for many, is a time for reflection – to look back over the past years events and decide whether things have turned out the way you thought they would or not. It is also a time for making plans and looking forward. 2014 marks the centenary of WW1 – the Great War, as it was known. In November, many of us would have remembered the fallen from both world wars and at Around Town Magazine we will be introducing a new segment this year, looking back at our town’s history. If you have a story of local interest from the past 100 years or more, then please get in touch – we’d love to hear from you! Inside this month we have a great article on Shop at my Local, by Around Town’s journalist Kelly Plume, who has also delivered a piece on the Rayleigh Action Group! We’ve also got all the regular updates from Rev. Mike Lodge, Nature Notes with Neil Sumner, MP Mark Francois, Know your Tradesman featuring Alan Chamberlain and both the Rayleigh Rotary and Lions Clubs. So read on and enjoy... Is there something we’re missing? What would you like to see from your community magazine? A subject we aren’t including, which you think would be of interest to fellow readers? Please get in touch and let us know – sales@aroundtownmagazines.co.uk or call 01277 658444.

Shop at my local At present, it is more important to us than ever before to shop and source locally in order to fuel our towns and villages but also to know exactly what we are getting and exactly where from. In Rayleigh, Rochford & Hockley there is a remarkable project encouraging just this, organized by Rochford council to breathe new life in to the shops in our High streets. ‘Shop at my Local’ offers local retailers, tradesmen and shoppers alike the opportunity to “facilitate local supply chains” and genuinely find some great bargains. The project aims to generate business and awareness for local traders by creating a platform to launch events and create great promotional offers. There’s something for everyone to be found at ‘Shop at my Local’ from bistros and brasseries to beauticians and boutique accessories. So if you feel like getting involved or want to find out more you can check out all the details of this fantastic scheme at: Website: www.shopatmylocal.com By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume

New Year - New Beginnings… The period between Christmas and New Year is often seen as a chance to look back over the past year and think about everything that has happened, both positive as well as challenging; the hopes and the despairs, the joys and the sorrows, the pleasures and the regrets… All of these aspects of life can relate to us personally but also from a community perspective, because each of us is part of the bigger picture, supporting the achievements and sharing together in the disappointments. And having reflected on what has been we move into the last days of the year, which quickly disappear behind us a New Year emerges. New Year is just one of many pivotal points in our lives, but it is one that occurs annually, without fail, on the 1 January, and as we turn to the first page of our new calendars or diaries, or as we see our smart phone or computer screens light up, they are announcing a new day, a new year and new beginnings… And for many these new beginnings are an opportunity to resolve to do things differently, described as New Year’s Resolutions; a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something that we might consider to be unhelpful. Some examples include resolutions to improve physical well-being, learn something new, become more organised, spend more time with family and friends, help others by giving to a charity, become more environmentally responsible, deepen our spiritual awareness, to suggest just a few. However, a recent study revealed that 88% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, despite the fact that 52% were confident of success! It has been suggested that Resolutions are more viable when shared, although this can be challenging in itself, especially if we struggle to maintain our goal. Whatever we decide, the overriding message that I want to share as we start the New Year is that of the opportunity for new beginnings. From a Christian perspective God, in Jesus, is not only the beginning he is also the end, embracing all aspects of our lives, faith and church. We understand that God not only created the earth and everything in, but at the beginning of time Jesus also existed, and with him a message of love and salvation is brought into everything that affects us, in word and action. This is the foundation on which the Christian faith is built, where the church is a symbol of light and hope for everyone and where all are welcome. We are not only beginning a New Year, but a new period in our lives as we create a new direction for ourselves and for our community, responding to the needs and expectations of those among whom we live. And together, we can accomplish this… With God’s rich blessing for 2014... Yours in the love of Jesus,
The Revd Canon Mike Lodge Team Rector Parish of Rayleigh

My favourite winter days are those when it is bright and crisp and still. With the leaves now gone, it is much easier to see birds in the trees and hedges, so this is a good time to look for our resident birds. By standing quietly in the woods and listening, you might hear the light tapping of a great spotted woodpecker as its digs for insect larvae. If you can spot it, its black, white and red colours are stunning in the winter sunshine. The great spotted woodpecker is common locally nowadays. Some of you will be lucky enough to see one in your garden. But it is not good news for all woodland birds. Another woodpecker, the lesser spotted, has declined, along with some of the woodland tit and finch species. We still don’t fully understand why this is. We know that in some woods deer browsing and a lack of management have removed much of the lower storey vegetation on which some wildlife depends. But even in healthy woods we have suffered losses. Nature cannot exist in a box. This is another factor affecting wildlife. Our nature reserves are small oases but often surrounded by areas which are unsuitable for many species. Wildlife needs stepping stones and corridors of friendly habitat so that it can move around to feed and to reproduce. If one wood loses its dormice in a bad year then other dormice need hedgerows to be able to travel to it as the population recovers. Ponds need to be well-distributed so that newts and frogs can travel and find new locations. Reptiles and small mammals need to move through grassy field margins to find mates. This is why our main conservation organisations are not just managing their nature reserves; they are also working with the public and landowners to improve areas between the reserves. We call these areas Living Landscapes and locally these are being actively pursued around Belfairs and Daws Heath and Hanningfield. Essex Wildlife Trust drive these supported by volunteers, local councils, landowners and other organisations, to help restore, reconnect and recreate important habitat for wildlife. If you do see a great spotted woodpecker it is worth reflecting not just on its natural beauty, but on the part it plays in the life in and around the wood. Whilst it is a predator of insects, its excavations also provide places for them to lay eggs and an old nest can even provide a home to a colony of bees. Some insects are essential in controlling pests and pollinating our plants. And the woodland not only hosts useful wildlife, it filters air and water, and provides us with useful material. Our natural world is not a luxury and not just a place for relaxation and leisure; we are totally dependent on it for clean air, for clean water and for growing our food.

Rayleigh Action Group Rayleigh Action Group is a team of Rayleigh residents from varied professional backgrounds who all have the same interest in the environmental welfare of the district of Rochford. In summer this year the group opposed Council plans to build over 1000 houses, some upon greenbelt land and introduce a mixed traveller site into the area. A petition was signed by 15% of the Rayleigh population and it even reached the local press and BBC News. Rayleigh Action Group claim that by making the public more aware of Council plans, procedures, meetings and developments is just doing what ‘the council have fallen short of doing’ in relaying information clearly. The passionate, lengthy campaigning, initiated by Rayleigh Action Group was set up in July to speak out and bridge the gap between the voice of the residents and Rochford District Council. In just three weeks, thousands of people had joined the group on social media sites, signed their petition and supported the aims of the group. HONOURING A VETERAN WHO CHASED THE BISMARK Just prior to Christmas I had the privilege of presenting a medal to a fascinating man called William Harvey, who had been involved in the chase of the Bismark by the Royal Navy in the Second World War. Bill was born in Wandsworth and joined the Navy early on in World War II and found himself posted to HMS Suffolk – a cruiser which picked up the Bismark as she ran through the Denmark straight in 1941. As a young wireless operator, he was on HMS Suffolk and took down the message that the Bismark had sunk HMS Hood – something which he told me he will never
By Mark Francois MP ever forget.
very pleased to present Bill, who lives in Rayleigh, with his medal in a small ceremony in the Rayleigh Conservative Club, in my role as Minister of State for the Armed Forces – but also as the son on a Naval Veteran as well.
Bill went on to serve on the Arctic Convoys in 1941 to 1942, and as such he qualified for the award of the Arctic Star medal, which commemorates those men who undertook what Winston Churchill once called “the worst journey in the world”.
We owe a great debt to men like Bill who, by their bravery, ensured we can still live in a free country and I am sure my constituents will be pleased to know he has been honoured in this way.
