Welcome
Hi Around Towners and welcome to the March edition of Rayleigh’s newest community magazine. I don’t want to tempt fate, but it seems as if the weather is starting to turn, the nights are staying lighter and it’s not pitch black when we wake up in the morning – It looks as if Spring is well and truly on the way! Speaking of Spring, Sunday 30th March is a date we should all remember this year for two very good reasons. Firstly, the clocks go forward – although this means we lose an hour in bed, we know it’s for the greater good and Spring will definitely have sprung. Secondly, It’s Mothering Sunday – now most of us don’t need one day a year to remind our mums of how special they are, but make sure she takes the day off, puts her feet up and relaxes. A bunch of flowers, chocolates and a home cooked meal always go down a treat!! Inside this edition, Kelly has reported on the Havens to Havens Walk and speaks with Peter Hall – a fundraiser at Havens to find out more about this incredible hospice. Mark Francois MP has delivered his thoughts on Part Night Lighting which has been implemented in Rayleigh and welcomes your views. Also inside, we catch up with our regular writers: Rev. Mike Lodge, Nature Notes with Neil Sumner, Byfords recipe page, Know your Tradesman with Ian’s Blinds and Curtains and the Rayleigh Rotary Club. So read on and enjoy...

From Pancakes to Posies… The Tuesday before Lent is known as Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, this year falling on 4th March. The name Shrove comes from the old word “shrive” which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of Lent began. The origins of eating pancakes arose from Christians who observe Lent and wanted to use up all the rich foods in their cupboards before Lent, which included eggs, sugar and butter, so these ingredients were used to make pancakes. Today, many people celebrate Pancake Day regardless of their religion or beliefs… The following day is the Christian Festival of Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins, marking the beginning of forty days of repentance and the assurance of forgiveness as declared in the Bible. The question is often asked, ‘Why is it called Ash Wednesday?’ For Christians, ashes are a symbol of being sorry for things they have done wrong and want to get removed from their lives. Since early days Christians have observed Lent with great devotion, a time of growing in faith through reading and meditating on what is written in the Bible in prayer, as well as fasting and restraint in preparation for the most important Christian Festival of Easter; coming into a deeper knowledge of the love of God shown through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus. On the fourth Sunday of Lent, which falls this year on 30th March, Mothering Sunday is remembered. Most Sundays in the year churchgoers worship at their nearest parish or ‘daughter church’. Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their ‘mother’ church - the main church or Cathedral of the area. Inevitably the return to the ‘mother’ church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away returned home. It was quite common in those days for children to leave home for work once they were ten years old. Most historians think that it was the return to the ‘Mother’ church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family. As they walked along the country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift. Today it is a day when children give presents, flower posies, and home-made cards to their mothers and in our churches on Mothering Sunday flower posies are given to all the women in the church as a token of love and appreciation. March is a busy month this year, especially as important Christian Festivals are celebrated, but also as popular traditions are lived out, from Shrove Tuesday to Mothering Sunday, from Pancakes to Posies, which I hope are also significant moments for you as we journey through the month… Yours in the love of Jesus,

In March, thoughts should already be turning to Spring. White snowdrops are nearly finished blooming in gardens and may be found naturalised in woodland. On one farm I visited recently they were mixed with a delightful patch of yellow winter aconites. Hazel bushes have dangling displays of ‘lambs tail’ catkins on the many straight stems which come from past coppicing, and catkins will soon follow on willow and alder. The mild weather has brought out some leaf buds in sheltered places and I even found a hawthorn in a leaf, a month earlier than usual. Winter does not suddenly end and Spring start. The seasons and wildlife behaviour can swap almost on a daily basis as the temperature rises and falls. One day hares are boxing and chasing in the fields and song thrushes are singing, then on another day both may be searching desperately for food on cold ground. This year, though, there has been plenty of natural food as well as mild weather so it’s the spring behaviour that has dominated. It is pleasing for bird survival that we had a mild winter but I feel a sense of selfish disappointment that we haven’t had the populations of visiting wintering birds that we have had in recent years. As the month progresses, the blackthorn bushes will give some roadside hedges a vivid ivory colour, and it is the time of year to enjoy the wood anemones in ancient woodland, of which we are fortunate to have locally, around Hockley and Daws Heath. The first of our summer-visiting birds arrive, the very first being the chiffchaff, which takes its name from the sound it makes. Anywhere where there are tall trees you may hear the monotonous 2-note song repeated over and over. Look for a tiny light brown bird flitting between branches as it searches for insects. The song is not to be confused with the great tit which also has a two-note song ‘tee-cher, tee-cher’ louder, bolder and often ending in a bell-like jing. This is the time of the year when amphibians return to the ponds. Sometimes you approach a pond and there is only stillness or a slight movement. If you are lucky there is more activity and you may find a pond boiling with frogs as the males, eager to mate, scramble for the females. Newts, which have spent their winter hibernating under rocks and logs, will make their way to small areas of freshwater. At this time they feed at night and tend to lie low during the day so you are best checking a pond at dawn or dusk. Please feel free to email me your sightings of amphibian or March chiffchaffs.

R AYLEI G H ROTARY CLUB The planning for our summer Concert in the Park is now in full swing. For many years this was the second largest public event in the area after the Southend Airshow and we aim to continue its popularity this year with the English Pops Orchestra. Mark 28th June in your diaries and check out our website (www.rotary-club.org.uk) and the YouTube link for an insight into what to expect. We have just donated £200 to the Testicular Cancer Charity following a very informative and humorous talk by Darren Couchman from the charity. We also donated £200 to the local ‘Paint Box’ charity which runs painting therapy for elderly people at the Cedar rooms in Rayleigh. Our club members always seem to do well in Rotary area sports competitions and to maintain our competitiveness, two of our members are taking part in the 2014 Sports Relief 50 mile charity bike ride in March which starts from the Olympic Stadium and travels through Essex – as one of them has already cycled from Land’s End to John o’Groats twice for charity it should be easy! On the social side, in addition to our weekly Monday evening meeting, we are having an evening at Romford Dog Stadium, always good fun even if we don’t manage to find the winners! For more details of our club or if you would like to join us on a Monday evening please contact Andrew Shackleton on 01702 201783 or robertashackleton@googlemail.com.

Event date - Sunday 27th April Walkers and families are being encouraged to step up in support of their local hospice by taking part in the annual Havens to Havens Walk on Sunday 27th April - in support of Havens Hospices. Little Havens Hospice is the only children’s for the whole of Essex and has been caring for children and families since March 1998. Little Havens Children’s Hospice - part of Havens Hospices provides respite breaks, symptom control and end-of-life care for youngsters living with serious conditions and who are not expected to reach adulthood. It aims to make their journey - and that of the family - as comfortable as possible, creating special memories along the way. The love and care provided by the Care Team in the homely surroundings at Little Havens is as special and unique as the child. This could not continue without kind donations as it costs £2.4 million each year to keep the hospice open. Fair Havens Hospice, based in Westcliff-on-Sea has been ‘making every day count’ for adults with life-limiting illnesses, and their families for the past 30 years. Little Havens Hospice opened their doors 16 years ago, in Thundersley, to give the same care and attention to children with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their families. Both hospices are ‘making every day count’ for those who need it most. No one knows about the amazing care and support offered by the hospice better than Peter Hall, a member of the fundraising team at Havens Hospices, who was once himself on the receiving end. ‘Fair Havens cared for me when I was seriously ill around 14 years ago and helped support me at the most difficult and challenging time of my life after I was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1993. My prognosis worsened over the years and I was eventually diagnosed as terminally ill in 1999.’ Fortunately, due in part to the amazing care Peter received during this period, he went on to make a full recovery! Peter went on to say: ‘I can never fully repay what Fair Havens did for me and my family - but now I am now fully recovered and celebrating my good health I am determined to do my bit and give something back to the hospice’ Peter now works as a fundraiser for Little Havens and does a fair bit of fundraising himself ‘I am running the London Marathon this year (for the 10th time) for Havens Hospices and am aiming to raise at least £1500 for the charity.’ On top of his 10th marathon and numerous skydives, Peter will also be taking part in the Havens to Havens walk on Sunday 27th April, but purely to support those taking part ‘I am walking to offer encouragement and support to others who are doing the walking - and in celebration and memory of some dear friends who passed away in recent years.’ Walkers taking part will be sponsored for 5 miles from Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley to Fair Havens Hospice in Westcliff-on-Sea. A round trip of 10 miles is also on offer for those who like an extra challenge.‘ Last year the event raised £27,000 with almost 400 people taking part to help raise such a wonderful amount’ explains Peter. ‘This year, we are aiming to raise £30,000 and increase the amount of walkers taking part to 450, if not more!’ To register to take part and to find out more about the Havens to Havens Walk or any of their other fundraising events, please visit: www.havenshospices.org/events
