Welcome

Welcome Around Towners to the March edition of Billericay’s leading community magazine. I don’t want to tempt fate, but it seems as if the weather is starting to turn, the nights are staying lighter and it’s not pitch black when we wake up in the morning – It looks as if Spring is well and truly on the way! Speaking of Spring, Sunday 30th March is a date we should all remember this year for two very good reasons. Firstly, the clocks go forward – although this means we lose an hour in bed, we know it’s for the greater good and Spring will definitely have sprung. Secondly it’s Mothering Sunday – now most of us don’t need one day a year to remind our mums of how special they are, but make sure she takes the day off, puts her feet up and relaxes. A bunch of flowers, chocolates and a home cooked meal always go down a treat!! Inside, Kelly has reported on 2 local charities, including Havens Hospice and Step by Step. John Baron MP has also delivered a piece on his charity event ‘Fun Walk 2014’, which this year is taking place at Barleylands Farm on Sunday 18th May. Also inside this edition we catch up with our regular writers: Rev. Paul Carr, Billericay Cricket Club, Nature Notes with Neil Sumner, the Billericay Rugby Club and all three club organisations from the town. So read on and enjoy...

Event date - Sunday 27th April Walkers and families are being encouraged to step up in support of their local hospice by taking part in the annual Havens to Havens Walk on Sunday 27th April - in support of Havens Hospices. Little Havens Hospice is the only children’s for the whole of Essex and has been caring for children and families since March 1998. Little Havens Children’s Hospice - part of Havens Hospices provides respite breaks, symptom control and end-of-life care for youngsters living with serious conditions and who are not expected to reach adulthood. It aims to make their journey - and that of the family - as comfortable as possible, creating special memories along the way. The love and care provided by the Care Team in the homely surroundings at Little Havens is as special and unique as the child. This could not continue without kind donations as it costs £2.4 million each year to keep the hospice open. Fair Havens Hospice, based in Westcliff-on-Sea has been ‘making every day count’ for adults with life-limiting illnesses, and their families for the past 30 years. Little Havens Hospice opened their doors 16 years ago, in Thundersley, to give the same care and attention to children with life-limiting illnesses, as well as supporting their families. Both hospices are ‘making every day count’ for those who need it most. No one knows about the amazing care and support offered by the hospice better than Peter Hall, a member of the fundraising team at Havens Hospices, who was once himself on the receiving end. ‘Fair Havens cared for me when I was seriously ill around 14 years ago and helped support me at the most difficult and challenging time of my life after I was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1993. My prognosis worsened over the years and I was eventually diagnosed as terminally ill in 1999.’ Fortunately, due in part to the amazing care Peter received during this period, he went on to make a full recovery! Peter went on to say: ‘I can never fully repay what Fair Havens did for me and my family - but now I am now fully recovered and celebrating my good health I am determined to do my bit and give something back to the hospice’ Peter now works as a fundraiser for Little Havens and does a fair bit of fundraising himself ‘I am running the London Marathon this year (for the 10th time) for Havens Hospices and am aiming to raise at least £1500 for the charity.’ On top of his 10th marathon and numerous skydives, Peter will also be taking part in the Havens to Havens walk on Sunday 27th April, but purely to support those taking part ‘I am walking to offer encouragement and support to others who are doing the walking - and in celebration and memory of some dear friends who passed away in recent years.’ Walkers taking part will be sponsored for 5 miles from Little Havens Hospice in Thundersley to Fair Havens Hospice in Westcliff-on-Sea. A round trip of 10 miles is also on offer for those who like an extra challenge.‘ Last year the event raised £27,000 with almost 400 people taking part to help raise such a wonderful amount’ explains Peter. ‘This year, we are aiming to raise £30,000 and increase the amount of walkers taking part to 450, if not more!’ To register to take part and to find out more about the Havens to Havens Walk or any of their other fundraising events, please visit: www.havenshospices.org/events

Bless, Eat and Listen! Ash Wednesday is celebrated on 5th March this year and remembers the beginning of Jesus’ forty days in the wilderness. Lent, for many, is an opportunity to practice some form of abstinence or a stimulus to enter into a less indulgent lifestyle. Last year, you may recall, I suggested how we should fast and feast during Lent: fast from bad things and feast on good things. This year, might you be willing to gain a new set of habits that may not only change your life, but the lives of those around you? It seems to me the following three suggestions formed a significant part of Jesus’ servant ministry and give us a helpful model to use today as we seek to serve those around us: BLESS: Might I suggest this could be three people each week: one family member, one neighbour and one person you don’t know! It could be simple words of encouragement; or an act of kindness through something practical such as running an errand or tidying the garden for those who are house bound; or even paying something towards the grocery bill for someone behind you in the queue! We bless others in response to all that we have been blessed with ourselves. EAT: Might you be willing to arrange a dinner party (or a brunch) and offer hospitality to friends and neighbours and spend the time just getting to know each other? There’s nothing more social and engaging than food and conversation. When we eat and talk together we discover how many of us share the same hopes, fears and disappointments. We often gain strength as we learn from the experiences of others. LISTEN: Sometimes we can be so busy, and distracted, rushing about that we don’t have time to listen to those around us. Why not set time aside to listen to someone whom you know is really struggling? Something as simple as a listening ear can be a cause of healing and comfort to others and, especially, in a time poor society, offering time to listen to someone can be a very precious gift. Imagine what difference we could make to our community in the weeks leading up to Easter if every reader of this magazine made an effort to do the three things above? It could be quite amazing, don’t you think? Let your imagination run wild and email me with your stories. NB. You may recall from last month’s column that Churches Together, in partnership with Billericay Town Council, have organising a Civic Service at 3.00pm on Sunday 16th March 2014 at Christ Church, Perry Street, when many organisations will come together in a service of thanksgiving to celebrate all that is good about Billericay, its public servants and residents. However, on Saturday 15th 2014 March, church members from across the town, along with many other groups, will be ‘out and about’ serving and blessing our community in numerous ways: Litter Pickup; Subway Painting; House and Garden repairs; Car Washing; a Family Treasure Trail at Saint Mary’s in the High Street – and much more. Let us know what we can do for you via email TownClerk@billericaytowncouncil.gov.uk or give us a tweet @LoveBillericay #Brillericay With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name

BILLERICAY CRICKET CLUB Est. 1875

Water, Water Everywhere Although not suffering the floods in other parts of the country the water table is at the highest it has ever been at the club and despite drainage being in place there is concern that unless there is a dramatic change in the weather conditions with a prolonged spell of warm dry weather with drying winds the start of the season will be affected. The grass has continued to grow in the relatively mild conditions but it is impossible to put any equipment onto the ground to cut and prepare the surface. What a contrast to last year when it was necessary to water the wickets in March and the outfield in April was parched and brown. As they say, the UK does not have a climate, it has weather. Indoor Nets Thank goodness that the club has these so that practice can continue indoors away from the elements. Other clubs benefit from hiring these and a few time spots remain but early application is required to avoid disappointment. Email djr66@aol.com.. Cricket T20 World Cup comes to Billericay On Tuesday 24 June and Thursday 26 June BCC hosts 8 of the ICC T20 Trophy matches between: Austria, Germany, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Norway and the winner of the Balkans tournament. Billericay 1st XI will play two of these teams on Sunday 22 June their Presidents Day. Look out for more details next month. Why not join? Billericay run 5 Saturday teams, a Sunday team, Vets midweek XI and colts teams from 9 to 17. New members and spectators are always welcome to the Blunts Wall Road ground CM12 9SA. ‘Mistakes = learning’ It’s been some 10 years since I was last behind the wheel of a car – being nervous was an understatement! Now, with just 4 lessons under my belt, my confidence is beginning to build. Initially, my clutch control and gears were pretty good, distance from the kerb and steering however were not. Colin suggested I practised steering at home, using anything round (a plate or a frisbee). My weapon of choice was an actual steering wheel, used for Mario Kart on the Nintendo Wii, which believe it or not, has helped. I’ve nailed ‘The Cockpit Drill’ by using the DSSSM method, standing for Doors, Seat, Steering, Seat belt & Mirrors. All the checks required before heading off on your journey. MSPSL is another acronym used before making a turn or emerging. This is an improved method, based on ‘Mirror, Signal, Maneuver’ standing for Mirrors, Signal, Position, Speed & finally Look. After my first month driving, Colin is happy with my progress and is pleased I am driving independently (i.e changing gear without a prompt). This coming month we’ll be crossing and joining traffic and approaching roundabouts.... STAY OFF THE ROADS PEOPLE!

Ian, 53 has been in the curtain and blind trade for 35 years. Following in his Mum’s footsteps, Ian grew up in the industry and finally went solo eight years ago. “It was a passion of my Mums and now it is a passion of mine, I love the customer satisfaction element of it. It’s a great feeling when you see the overall transformation and another happy customer”. Ian works Essex wide and no job is too big or small. He has over 30 years experience in matching the perfect curtains or blinds to a household and no quote is obligatory. Ian’s wife Linda, helps out behind the scenes taking appointments and keeping his diary organised. Ian is a big fan of motor sport and in his spare time (which he gets very little of) he likes to watch it. “I barely have any spare time because I’m always off here there and everywhere but I love my job and I wouldn’t have it any other way”.

This is the time of the year when amphibians return to the ponds. Sometimes you approach a pond and there is only stillness or a slight movement. If you are lucky there is more activity and I recall early a sunny March morning in Mill Meadows when a pond was boiling with frogs as the males, eager to mate, scrambled for the females. Newts, which have spent their winter hibernating under rocks and logs, will make their way to small areas of freshwater. At this time they feed at night and tend to lie low during the day so you are best checking a pond at dawn or dusk. As spring warms they become easier to see. On warm days in March adders will emerge from hibernation and will be sluggish as they lie absorbing the sun’s warmth in their body. Finding an adder isn’t easy because they often scurry off before we are within viewing range and even if they lie still their camouflage can make them almost invisible. We may have all been closer to an adder than we realised. They are poisonous but not aggressive. A bite is extremely unlikely and although painful, very rarely is it fatal. Adders, and indeed all our snakes and lizards and most native amphibians, are in decline mainly through loss of habitat, so are protected species. Our common frog is also being hit by a disease, chytrid, which is a fungal infection. We can only monitor this disease and hope that some resistance will develop. If you see a sick frog it may be this disease but best to check the symptoms on a web site, such as Froglife. Possibly another threat are the non-native species that have been introduced. If you go to Rainham Marshes you will see large Marsh Frogs which have spread from Kent following an introduction in 1935. There are a spectacular addition to our wildlife and easy to see from the board walks but we are worried that they may outcompete our native frogs so we don’t want them to spread further – if you go to see them don’t bring one home! If you see a long legless animal it may not be a snake but actually a Slow Worm which is a type of lizard. They are common and can be found in gardens, perhaps in compost heaps on under stones. On some nature reserves we put out reptile mats which provide warm places of refuge and it is usually a slow worm that is found under one of these. They can be handled carefully and many years ago in my primary school days it wasn’t unusual for a boy to bring a live one to school. But in those days we collected newts and eels, when they were prolific in the countryside. Today I would urge that we leave them in the wild and campaign vigorously to protect those that we still have. Please feel free to email me your reptile and amphibian encounters.

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB Quiz Night A sell out with over 100 people attending the Italian themed quiz at Stock Village Hall on Saturday Feb 8 when Billericay based Tasta Italia provided different Italian foods between the rounds of questions that tested our knowledge of all things Italian. Apart from being a very enjoyable social occasion the event raised over £1000 for charity. Billericay Summerfest Sunday 13 July 2014 This will take place on Sun Corner with the usual format of stalls including the ever popular Continental Market, arena events and a live stage. A beer and Pimms tent will be available to accompany the many types of foods on offer and of course there will be kiddies rides, pony rides, Punch & Judy and a classic car display. Entry is free to this annual summer community and charity fund raising event. Keep up to date at www.billericaysummerfest.co.uk UK Floods Rotary clubs up and down the country have been responding to local needs resulting from the extraordinary weather conditions. Unlike immediate disaster support that is well provisioned in the UK by Fire & Rescue services together with the Army, Rotary action seeks to support the victims after the immediate response teams have withdrawn. Why not join? Email: imiller1@gmail.com

BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB The Taste of Greece evening on March 29th is now sold out and we have a full house for the fifth year running! A further full report will follow next month, but don’t expect Lions Club members to be wearing a fustanella, the traditional Greek military skirt, when serving! And rest assured, any person engaged in the Greek habit of plate throwing will be asked to leave! Our Big Band Night, is now confirmed for Saturday, May 24th, to be held at The Emmanuel Church in Laindon Road. Tickets are priced at £12 per person in advance, with a surcharge to be decided, for paying on entry, so please book early to avoid disappointment! The proceeds from the concert this year will go to Jay’s Hospice based in Great Baddow, who send nurses into our community to care for young cancer sufferers. Plans are now in progress to put in place Easter hampers in various outlets to be raffled in the two weeks leading up to Easter. All winners will be contacted directly when the draw takes place and the Hampers will be delivered to their homes in time for the holidays! So don’t forget to put your telephone numbers on the backs of the raffle tickets to win that delicious hamper! The 5th Billericay Beer festival is now set for the very last weekend in June at The Billericay Football Club. More details on this will follow in future editions of Around Town Magazine. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.

A Mixed Month…

v

England 12:30pm KO

The month of February has seen some tremendous highs and unbelievable lows for the first team at Billericay Rugby Club. After being called off twice due to a waterlogged pitch, 15th Feb saw Billericay switch grounds to an artificial pitch to ensure the game went ahead. They moved the game to Allianz Park, the home of Premiership team, Saracens.

3pm KO

Willowbrook Sports & Social Club Stock Road, Billericay Essex, CM4 9PQ

Billericay took a strong team to the Allianz to play an Old Gravesendians team, with both sides looking to progress into the next round of the National Cup, it was sure to be a hard fought match. An exceptionally powerful first half saw Billericay blow their opponents away. The final score was 33-15 to the Essex side, who showed their power and skill throughout. The following week bought the area semi-final of the cup, and an away match at Seaford. With the final at Twickenham just 3 games away, this was to be the biggest game for Billericay for a number of years. Sadly, they were unable to exert their power from the first whistle and eventually lost 22-19. A painful, undeserved loss. Hugely disappointed that Twickenham has gone for this season, all is not in vain as the first team are still sitting pretty at the top of the league. Please do you best to come and support your local team in their quest for promotion.

BILLERICAY BREWING COMPANY

Billericay now has its first brewery for over a hundred years. Billericay Brewing have just started brewing on their new microbrewery situated in Chapel Street, just behind the Waitrose Car Park. After a year of brewing at Pitfield Brewery, near Ongar, brewer and company director Trevor Jeffery has developed an impressive portfolio of beers. The aim is to produce craft ales with taste and character. They have started with a range of 4 beers: Billericay Blonde, a refreshing 4% ABV golden ale; Mayflower Gold, a powerful 6.5% ABV hoppy American style IPA; A Mild With No Name, a strong 5.5% ABV dark mild and their latest brew Billericay Dickie, a 4.2% hoppy amber ale. More beers are planned for the near future. Whilst brewing at Pitfield Brewery most of the production has gone into bottles to be sold in The Essex Beer Shop, situated in Chapel Street, next to the microbrewery. Now that the microbrewery has been commissioned, approximately half the production will go into draught aiming to sell to local pubs, bars and clubs. The beers have already made successful appearances at local beer festivals. Ask your local pub if you would like them to stock the beers. The Essex Beer Shop opened in June last year and has quickly established itself as Essex’s leading specialist beer retailer. As well as stocking Billericay Brewing beers it also stocks a wide range of beers from other Essex breweries, such as Brentwood, Crouch Vale, Farmers and Wibblers. In addition it stocks beers from some of the exciting new London micro breweries, such as The Kernel, Weird Beard and Beavertown – if you’ve not tried them yet, you are in for a treat. Also it has frequently changing guest ales from UK and international breweries plus Essex wines and ciders. The shop provides free tastings each weekend and also runs tasting evenings each month – these are good social occasions to learn a little more about beer. Tasting sessions can also be booked for a group of friends or a local club. Bookings are now being taken for brewery tours and later this year there will be the opportunity to become a brewer for the day and spend the day brewing your own beer! Personalised beers for celebrations such as weddings and company promotions are also offered. If you would like to find out more and try some of the excellent beers, then come along to the Grand Brewery Opening Weekend with bar on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th March – see the adjoining advert and the company website for further details.

Happy Birthday Step by Step! Tucked away on 140 Perry Street, upstairs on a second is a close team of staff, parents and children having fun and working together, making up one of Billericay’s most magical hidden treasures; Step by Step Pre School, which is 10 years old this year! Step by Step is registered charity and run by parents and 14 staff for children aged 2 to 5 years old and are open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. With no bulky banners or flashy promotion, Step by Step has survived solely on word of mouth recommendation, a credit to how resourceful, resilient and much-loved they are. Tracy Dix, founder and senior supervisor of such a special organisation is extremely proud and full of pride, looking back on how the school has evolved and developed, “10 years has gone so quickly, there have been so many changes and it’s amazing to think about how we have made a difference to so many lives. ‘You only get out of it what you put in’ rings so true and here, we have an invaluable support network of teachers and trained staff who put every effort into ensuring each child here gains their own personal skill set and development that prepares for their next step in life” “It is an absolute joy planning weekly themes, fun activities and events for the children. We get to know each child individually and realise the importance of settling in. We use learning through play and the government curriculum to shape our daily structure around the interests of the children, to engage them fully and to make every single day exciting and fun.” Mother of two, Tracy previously worked in the city for 14 years until she had her two sons who attended Rainbow nursery. Unfortunately the nursery had to close leaving many families bereft and this was the catalyst for creating Step by Step in its place. It was the understanding of the importance of a fantastic pre school for a parent and their children that the school was built upon. Tracy and the team work together to full fill the needs of parents and their children on a personable level. Step by Step works in conjunction with local organisations to provide a busy events calendar for the children and to plan fundraising for the school and other charities and the Baptist Church from which they operate donates its space as an outdoor play area. At the moment the children look forward to their Easter party and visiting their sprouting Snowdrops that they planted before Christmas in the park with the Friends of Lake Meadows.
