Take Action on Stroke this May Someone in the UK has a stroke every three and a half minutes. Stroke kills twice as many women as breast cancer and three times the number of men as prostate cancer. For survivors, the effects can be life-changing, for them and their families. For the Stroke Association, stroke is one of the greatest health challenges of our time, so this May they are bringing us Action on Stroke month. The Stroke Association is the UK’s leading stroke charity, which provides support for survivors to make the best recovery they can, campaigns for improvements in care, and funds research to come up with new treatments and ways of preventing stroke. For them, Action on Stroke month is key to promoting public awareness of stroke prevention and highlighting the support services available locally to stroke survivors and their families. Beverly Reynolds, the Stroke Association’s Assistant Regional Manager for East of England said “This month is Action on Stroke Month, and the Stroke Association is celebrating the vital services available to people living in Rayleigh and the surrounding area. The charity offers a range of support services in the local community, helping stroke

survivors and their families make their best possible recovery from the devastating impact of a stroke. Although it’s one of the UK’s biggest killers and leading causes of disability, far too many people don’t understand it or ever think it’ll happen to them. Around 11,600 people have a stroke every year in the East of England and over 100,000 people live with the effects of stroke. Many people believe that strokes only happen to older people but a quarter of all strokes happen to people under the age of 65.” A stroke is a brain attack which happens when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, caused by a clot or a bleed in the brain. For survivors, this can have a lasting impact both physically and neurologically, depending on which part of the brain has been affected, and how widespread the attack. For the Stroke Association, it is vital survivors get all the support and information they need to make the best recovery possible. In the South West Essex area, covering Billericay, Rayleigh and the surrounding areas, support is available in the form of Communication Support Service and Information, Advice and Support coordinators. The co-ordinators work with clients to help

them meet their recovery goals, signposting them to the services, facilities and opportunities they need, from live-in carers and disability benefits, to retraining and returning to work. They can also match them with volunteers who will work with them in their own home or in a group setting, providing communication support. This May there are fundraising and stroke prevention events happening across Essex. The Stroke Association is one of the chosen charities being sponsored in the 2014 Fun Walk, at Barleylands Farm on 18th May. For further details of Action on Stroke Month and local fund raising/ stroke prevention events, please visit www.stroke.org. uk/strokemonth. For further information on about stroke, including how to recognise the signs and symptoms and support services available, please visit www.stroke.org.uk or call the Stroke Association Helpline on 0303 30 33 100.

Gardening A Beginners Guide - Pest Control Even the best kept garden will be teeming with critters all conspiring to sabotage your growing efforts and you could spend a lot on named chemicals to combat various problems but it may be worth having a go with more environmentally friendly remedies first. For instance, the cabbage-white butterfly, as its name suggests will home in on your cabbages and other brassicas, lay its eggs and, two weeks later, a mass of caterpillars will be eating holes in the leaves. Pick them off by hand, inspecting the plants carefully every day or two and try spraying them with salty water to deter them. To combat greenfly, try crushing a clove of

garlic in warm water, leave for about 6 hours, strain into a hand spray and spray over the plants. It’s very effective. If you find aphids on your rose buds, a disgusting but effective treatment is to rub them out with your fingers. Cats can be deterred with oldfashioned moth balls although the effects don’t last very long. After a wet night a local cat had buried all of ours! Of all the pests that will drive you up the wall, slugs and snails are at the top of the list, particularly when you have young seedlings or are growing hostas or sunflowers. For plants in pots, Vaseline or grease smeared round the pot can help, as can copper strips which cause

electro-chemical shocks. Otherwise, try sharp mulches around the plants that need protection, such as sharp gravel, crushed eggshells or broken seashells. Some say hair clippings work (see your local hairdresser) and caffeine is supposed to be lethal to molluscs so try coffee grounds. Half fill a dish with beer (I don’t think they are particularly fussy about the brand!) and sink it in the ground to attract the slugs which fall in and drown. Of course, nothing really beats a size 10 boot and a thorough search of the garden with a torch in hand on a damp night might pay dividends. Happy hunting!

Victory for rayleigh in tesco car park dispute Around two years ago, Tesco opened a new convenience store on the corner of London Road and Vernon Avenue, in Rayleigh. Although the shop proved to be popular with local shoppers, the disruptive parking situation caused primarily by inadequate car parking provision - meant that all too often visitors hastily parked their cars haphazardly on nearby grass verges and residential roads, which proved to be a nuisance for many of my constituents who lived close by. Further confusion was caused by frequent deliveries made to the store by Tesco lorries, which often blocked the surrounding roads and sometimes made shopping at the local convenience store far from convenient. As soon as I began to receive

By Mark francois Mp complaints from residents, I began to lobby Tesco directly, writing numerous letters to Phil Clarke, the Chief Executive of Tesco, in a campaign which began over two years ago and has resulted in a case file over an inch thick! Following a long and protracted campaign, in which I was assisted by local councillors, I am pleased to report that Tesco have finally agreed to make the necessary improvements and expand the car park. Tesco have confirmed that, subject to local Council approval,

they will purchase the existing grass area on the site and use it to extend the current car park, which will allow more space for shoppers at the busy local store. Regarding the disruption caused by Tesco delivery vehicles, Tesco have consolidated deliveries so that only one will be made per day. This should improve the current congestion caused by multiple lorries travelling to and from the site each day and ensure a much more pleasant experience for shoppers and residents alike. I am pleased that Tesco have finally listened to reason on this. Rt Hon Mark Francois Member of Parliament for Rayleigh and Wickford

Did your enjoy The Voice on TV earlier this year? I didn’t watch it but it’s always on in our house as my wife is a fan. I like to play at my own version and why not try this yourself this springtime – you can play at being in The Voice, nature-style? You could be Tom Jones or Kylie but in the woods, gardens or fields and out early on a nice day in May. Instead of listening to aspiring vocalists, listen to bird-song. And the challenge is not to judge their quality but to separate out the distinctive song of each type of bird. It’s also a challenge to find the source of the song from deep within the bush – you don’t just turn your chair and look it in the eye. Bird song is a wonder. How does that tiny throat make such incredible sounds? A singing wren puts its whole small body into that song. Proclaiming its territory – “this is my patch!”. Attracting a mate: “I sing the loudest so I must have the best genes!”. Great tits have adapted well to the urban environment: their loud repetitive two note “tea-cher tea-cher” broadcasts over the hum of traffic. Nightingales, although much rarer, may turn up occasionally in coppiced woodland in Hockley or Daws Heath or in thick blackthorn scrub on farmland, and sing more at night than in the day. A study in Berlin measured one nightingale song at 95 decibels. European law states that workers must wear ear protection when working in noise levels over 87 decibels, so beware. From The Voice to Harry Hill. I like the slow repetitive notes of song thrush, the purity and variety of nightingale and I like the fast rattling melodies of blackcap and garden warbler? But which is better? There’s only way to find out - go and listen for yourself. You can hear blackbirds, thrushes and chaffinches in the gardens, warblers and dunnocks in the scrub, great, blue and coal tits in the woods and skylarks in the fields. May is when the bird song peaks as arrivals from Africa join our resident birds. The season is brief, although some birds will sing on through June, it does get noticeably quieter as they focus on rearing their broods. But then the warm weather brings more butterflies and flowers – so much to enjoy and look forward to at this special time of year. Questions on bird-song or where to hear it? Feel free to email me

A View From The ChurCh

From one ascension to another!! The Parish Church of Rayleigh has dominated the skyline at the head of the High Street for over 600 years. Known to be the second or possibly the third building to stand on this site, it is likely that Christians have worshipped here for over 1000 years. The present mediaeval building, started in the 1380’s, is built of Kentish ragstone and flint but includes Roman tiles and other materials that may have come from earlier remains. The slender columns of the nave are particularly fine examples of the Perpendicular style and there are many other features of interest both within and without its walls. The Tudor brick porch was added in the 1500’s and served as a shelter for the homeless as well as Rayleigh’s first school for six boys. From 1381 when building work was begun, to the present day, the erection and maintenance of Holy Trinity has been the responsibility of those who love the church. The Friends of Holy Trinity Rayleigh was founded in 1996 to continue that tradition. Today in the early years of the 21st century we have, more than any other generation,

the technology and materials to aid restoration and conservation works. Such skills and materials however, do not come without a price. It is the aim of The Friends to offer financial assistance to support the ongoing task of repair and renewal and it is with much gratitude that over £300,000 has been raised to this end over the past 18 years. And you have an opportunity to add your support to this ongoing commitment to maintain this fine building through the events that are organised by ‘The Friends’. The next main occasion is the annual Tower Opening on Monday 5 May, from 10.00am till 5.00pm, when you can ascend the spiral staircase to the top of the tower and experience the breath taking views across south Essex and into London! The day will also include talks given by the bell ringers and many other activities going on, as well as the availability of refreshments! We are very sorry that due to insurance restrictions only those who are aged 8 and over are able to ascend the tower.

the young at heart, the late May Bank Holiday Monday, 26 May, from 10.00am till 5.00pm, sees the return of the very popular Teddy Bear Parachute Jump, brave bundles of fur and padding hurtling from the top of the tower in fear and trembling, but all in a good cause..! And from the opportunity to ascend Holy Trinity Tower on Monday 5 May (or watch teddy bears descending on Monday 26 May!), we will be celebrating Ascension Day on Thursday 29 May at 8.00pm in Holy Trinity Church, when there will be a service of Holy Communion, as we celebrate the Ascension of Christ, to serve in glory with his Father in heaven. Do plan to come along to mark this important date in the church’s calendar. Yours in the love of Jesus I look forward to seeing you very soon…

However, looking ahead, especially for children and all
