Operation Christmas Child Some of you may be familiar with the excellent work of Operation Christmas Child (OCC) and shoeboxes filled with presents for less fortunate children than our own across Europe. Since 1990, over 100 million children and young people, worldwide, have been able to receive a Christmas gift that they would not have received because they live in extreme poverty or because they are orphaned or their parents are just too poor to buy them a Christmas present. A fantastic achievement from the simple idea of a friend of mine, Dave Cooke, a carpenter from Wrexham who was so deeply moved by the plight and images of children in the orphanages in Romania on TV in 1990 that he decided he had to do something about it. OCC was born to become what is now the largest children’s charity in the world. Might I encourage you and your family (and/or your place of work/club/organisation/school) to join in with us this year and collect the following items over the next few weeks? • • • • •
Shoeboxes: We always seem to run out! (Please wrap these in colourful wrapping paper). Toiletries: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, flannels, combs, brushes. Sweets: Such as Haribo or boiled sweets but NO chocolate! Drawing Equipment: Pens, paper, pencils, colouring books, coloured pencils, rubbers, sharpeners. Woollens: Hats, scarves, and gloves.
You can bring them along to Emmanuel on Friday 15th November from 7.30pm onwards. Might I also invite you to join in with our ‘Shoebox Filling Extravaganza’ at Emmanuel from 10.00am on Saturday 16th November and our special ‘Shoebox Service’ at 10.30am on Sunday 17th November (completed shoeboxes can also be brought along on these days). Your contribution, however small, would be much appreciated. I have been fortunate to help lead shoebox distribution teams to Belarus, Crimea and the Ukraine and I have seen, at first hand, the joy a simple shoebox ‘filled with love’ can bring. Sending shoeboxes is a very practical way of showing God’s love to others. However, I think it’s worth remembering that shoeboxes have a two-way ministry. I know how much pleasure people get from buying small gifts and making things to make the shoebox complete. Leaflets are available at Emmanuel and you can find out more about OCC here www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk I’d be happy to come and speak with you about my experiences, show some slides and tell some stories! With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name Revd Paul A. Carr Emmanuel Church, Billericay Web: www.emmanuel-church.info Email: paul@billericaychurches.org Tweet: @EmmanuelCM12

Mac’s First Autumn With flip flops and summer dresses making their way to the back of the wardrobe, we are once again leaving summer tucked away in another photo album. The slow cookers are out and we are suddenly swapping salads for soups, cardi’s for coats and an evening in the garden for a cosy night in front of the telly. With rosy cheeky and the crisp smell of autumn in the air, the transition of seasons are having us layer up and on the Sunday the 27th October it is the official end of British Summertime. Which means one thing; one hour less in bed. I can’t dress it up any more than that I’m afraid. In my household, it isn’t just me who is preparing for the colder months. It will be my pet mouse, Mac’s first autumn and I am ensuring it will be a snug one for him. Mac is nearly 11 months old (around 40 in mouse years) and is the most handsome fancy mouse in town. And we, for two, can’t wait to have an excuse to stay in on a Saturday night in our pj’s and hibernate from the cold with our hot water bottles. By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume

Gary Powell, 54 from Billericay has been an Electrician for 25 years and has run his own company, Mercury Electricals for the last 16, with business partner David Roberts. “Throughout my life I’ve always come back to being an electrician and enjoy the job so much. It takes you somewhere different every day and you meet all sorts of peopleâ€?. As well as working locally a lot of the time, Gary and David are used to travelling to London and all round with Mercury Electricals. “We branch out further aďŹ eld because our industry is so broad, its great having so much varietyâ€?. There isn’t much time when Gary isn’t working but in his little spare time, Grandad Gary is kept busy by his two grandsons and also likes to play squash. “Because I’ve been doing this for years I know so many people and it’s always nice bumping into friendly faces. The best thing about working for myself is that I don’t have to report to anybody when I’m not coming in‌ Only joking!â€? BILLERICAY CRICKET CLUB Est. 1875
Despite a strong finish to the season with big wins over Horndon and Gidea Park & Romford, Billericay 1st XI just failed to secure a second season of promotion finishing third in division 2 of the SNEL Essex cricket league, only 6 points behind second place. Having beaten the two promoted sides, Billericay are left to rue two early season defeats against lowly opposition. The 2nd XI secured promotion finishing second in their division whilst the 3rd & 4th XIs finished in the top half of their leagues. Billericay will now concentrate on securing Clubmark and close season work to further improve the already excellent Blunts Wall ground while seeking to strengthen the team ready for another promotion push in 2014. Indoor nets are available to hire and slots are already being booked for winter training. Billericay run 5 Saturday teams, a Sunday team, Vets midweek XI and colts teams from 9 to 17. New members and spectators are always welcome to the Blunts Wall Road ground. See www.billericaycc.co.uk for more details of joining and to hire the clubhouse for parties or wakes where the views over the Essex countryside and substantial parking provide an excellent setting.

Remember, Remember the 2nd November! Now in it’s 44th year, the biggest firework display in Essex is back and bigger than ever at Lake Meadows Park for another dazzling spectacular. It’s wellies and wooly hats at the ready as we join Heart FM’s Martin & Sue, Leanne Jarvis from The Voice and a host more surprise guests in Billericay this November for what is dubbed to be the biggest one yet! The Round Table’s Tony Sprackling, who has been organizing the event for nearly 10 years, tells me why, this year, it’s going to go off with a bang! (sorry) “There are thousands of people involved in bringing the whole night together and I find it awe inspiring that so many give up their time for free. This year we’re supporting Little Havens and St Luke’s Hospice. Last year the firework display helped St Luke’s Hospice buy another vehicle and they’re bringing it along on the night to show everyone. “We keep the event as local as we can; Billericay police, fire brigade, St Johns Ambulance service, the cubs and scouts, friends of Lake Meadows and even the rugby club are on board, helping us out this year. I love the community spirit that there is surrounding the event, the buzz around the High Street. Everyone plays their part; Smokers Paradise and other local shops help us sell the tickets and pubs base events around the night so people can disperse afterwards and carry on having fun.” This year a massive £21,000 has been spent on the show. The original total was 20K but an extra thousand has been added, solely for an especially powerful finale! Tony, whose background is in health and safety, explained, “The best thing about my job is seeing so many smiles and so much happiness. People still approach me months afterwards and tell me how much fun they had and how amazing it was. But the main thing is that everybody is kept safe”. I couldn’t let Tony go without asking my last, most important question and was overjoyed to learn that, yes! This year, those really cool, amazing heart shaped fireworks will be making an appearance!! Have you seen a hedgehog recently? I doubt that many of you have. They were once common in our countryside and regular in our gardens, but hedgehogs have declined enormously, from an estimated 30 million in the 1950s to less than one million today. Why? A lot of people blame the badger, as badger numbers have increased and they do predate hedgehogs. But badgers and hedgehogs have lived together for thousands of years. Hedgehogs need several things that we have been slowly taking away: areas of dense scrub and the creepy-crawly species such as beetles and caterpillars that they eat. And many of the areas they live in have been isolated by building and removal of vegetation so small populations become isolated and die out. Hedgehogs are one of the 60% of our wildlife species that are in decline. This was highlighted in the State of Nature report published earlier this year (available online). At its launch it was described as a very worrying picture but also a sign of hope. The hope is in our proven successes - we have already reversed declines in species and there are local examples in our county such as water voles, otters, avocets and oxlips. But the threats continue. There is a shortage of housing and we are must grow food so development and intensive farming are essential to our expanding population. Is it really possible to make space for nature in our local plans? Well, not only is it possible, it is essential. The natural world does things for us: filtering water and air, making soil fertile and storing carbon, as well as giving us something to enjoy. And we need it for our economy. Just one example: animal pollinators, including bees, generate 1 billion dollars worth of sales of plant produce every year across the world. We must include space for nature in our plans and we can do this, by restoring areas that are good for wildlife, such as woodlands, patches of scrub and ponds, and by re-connecting these areas with corridors for wildlife, such as hedgerows, field margins and wide verges. In the forthcoming years we can expect to see a lot of change locally, especially with new development, and the wildlife populations will change with it, but it doesn’t have to be change for the worse. October is a time for change. Hedgehogs are amongst the many animals that go into hibernation whilst others, such as swallows and house martins, head south. Flocks of duck and geese swell on our marshes and inland waters and parties of wintering thrushes and finches are in the hedges and woodlands. The leaves are in glorious colour then fall to the ground and, in dying, enrich the soil below which fuels more growth in future years. All part of the marvellous cycle of the natural world on which we depend.

MAYFLOWER ROTARY CLUB On Sunday September 8 nine teams assembled on the banks of the River Chelmer at Chelmsford boating club to participate in the second Bell Boat Race organised by The Rotary Club of Billericay Mayflower. Crews of 8 settled themselves in a catamaran style canoe to race against each other over a 400m course and included local representatives from Billericay Lawn Tennis Club who were last year’s runners up, Billericay Rugby Club and Mayflower Rotary Club but the winning team this year, Red Hot, came from a team based in Brentwood. Mayflower Rotary Club were runners up sustaining only one defeat, against Red Hot when a cox error steered them into the bank. Friends, Families and supporters enjoyed viewing the spectacle from the river bank whilst enjoying the barbecue and refreshments laid on for the day and the event raised £1,000 for the Thriftwood School 6th form project. There were more participants this year and based on the fun that was had by all it is hoped that the number of teams will increase again next year. Planning is well advanced for this year’s Billericay Christmas Market that will be held in Billericay High Street on Sunday December 1st. We are pleased to announce that High Street solicitors, Paul Robinson LLP have joined Essex Auto Group, Burstead Golf Club and Para Bar Moir as platinum sponsors of the event with Waitrose and Anisha Grange continuing as gold sponsors. Please visit www.billericaychristmasmarket.com for more details. New members are welcome to join us. In addition to charity fund raising there is a social programme of fun events to be enjoyed with like minded friends. We meet in Rose Hall, Chapel Street at 8pm on Thursdays. BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB The Lions annual Senior Citizen’s Concert was held on September 14th when nearly 200 of our Seniors were treated to a live show at The Emmanuel Church. Those people who had no transport were returned home in good spirits by club members. A great time was had by all! The first Lions’ Fundraising event of the year has been announced – a Quiz on the Last 5 Decades. This is to be held on Saturday, 16th November, at Christchurch Hall in Perry Street. Tickets will be £5 per person, please bring your own drinks and nibbles. The Christmas Market and the Christmas Sleigh is now under preparation with routes being organised, licences applied for and permissions for staging the event sought. More details will follow on our website when available. Next year’s popular ‘Taste of ...’ night is expected to be ‘A Taste of Greece’, to be held on March 29th. Remember to book early for this event as it sells out very quickly. Again, more details to follow. Our first Social event has already been held – a mystery walk in Maldon, where cryptic clues were given to be solved at different spots around the Town much to the amusement of the locals. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.
Whats been on? Eight of the guys recently spent their weekend in Ilfracombe, North Devon for the Round Tables National Sporting Weekend. This is an annual event, this year nearly 600 Tablers from across the country took part to take as many points away as they could. What a great weekend full of sporting activities, banter, eating, some drinking and some dancing/swaying. Our target was to beat our previous years points of 92.5 with a overall position of 16th. We did not beat last years score, “we smashed it in to touch”. In addition the the existing members a BIG thank you to our NEW members who took part in their first year on Table. Whats coming up? October 9th, some of the guys are going to visit a Nitro Scalextric track in Benfleet, we are sure that they will have a good race night to make a break from the norm. Fireworks tickets will be available online VERY SOON Remember to allocate November 2nd in your diary for this years Billericay Round Table Firework Spectacular at lake Meadows. Keep your eye on www.billericayfireworks.co.uk for what we have planned. TOWN LEFT IN THE DARK Essex County Council will be implementing Part Night Street Lighting in the Basildon area from 1st November. As it stands, lights will be extinguished between the hours of midnight and 5.00am. These proposals follow similar schemes elsewhere in our county, which have proved to be a success. This initiative will save energy, as well as reducing carbon emissions and costs – all areas which are very important to improve upon. There will understandably be concerns as to the potential consequences of these proposals. Pilot schemes in Maldon and Uttlesford have been operating since 2007, with no evidence of increasing crime rates. Indeed, crime
(such as banks or jewellers). Lighting for remote footpaths and alleys will not be affected, and the police will naturally have a say if they believe public safety and security is in doubt.
By John Baron MP has continued to fall in line with the national average. There will of course be areas where it would be inappropriate for this scheme to operate. At present, it is envisaged that 30% of street lights in Basildon will remain lit throughout the night. Sites where there are a large number of conflicting traffic movements (such as roundabouts) will be exempt, as will streets with a high proportion of high security premises
The County Council is also keen to hear your views on these proposals, and I would encourage local residents to respond to the consultation it is currently running. In particular, the Council is exploring possible further exemptions to the changes. Residents should visit the council’s website before submitting their responses to partnightlighting@essexhighways. org, noting the location of the lights and reasons why they should be exempted.

And so it begins… Saturday 21st September saw the first league Willowbrook Sports & Social Club match for Billericay RFC’s 1st XV. Pre-season Stock Road, Billericay had gone well with fitness sessions being taking Essex, by Sara Du Plessis from SX Fit (@SXFitPT), this CM4 9PQ saw the squad reach fitness levels much higher than in previous years. Having put in the hard yards during a long preseason, involving rigorous fitness sessions, and tough matches, the first match had been eagerly awaited. New captain Adam Young led a young Billericay team against, newly promoted Ilford Wanderers, who proved to be no push-overs! With an exceptionally weighty forward pack, Ilford were able to dominate the scrum set piece area. However, as the game went on they began to tire, allowing Billericay’s superior fitness to prevail. Billericay scored 2 tries in the closing minutes to secure a vital 1 point victory! Billericay’s 2nd XV played a tough game against a very well organised Wanstead team. With a depleted pack, Billericay fought hard but a few lapses in defence and some good moves from the Wanstead team resulted in the opponents reaching an unassailable half time lead. A much tighter 2nd half was unfortunately was not enough to rescue the game. The youth section of BRFC goes from strength to strength. The season kicked off on 1st September with over 120 members signing up to play for the Billericay Bee’s. We are now coaching rugby to reception, school year 1, up to year 9. Training is every Sunday from 10.00am and lasts for an hour for the minis, the under 10’s and above runs for 2 hours. If you are interested in coming along and playing then please just turn up and speak to any of the coaches who will be happy to help talk to you about our club. Alternatively you can contact Andy Collings our Youth Chairman (andycollings999@hotmail.com & 07970 194995).

The Mysterious Hauntings of Chimney Charlie As summer gives way to the inevitable autumn, there’s a palpable nip in the air. But it’s far too early for Jack Frost to be showing his face just yet, for this chill is of a far more paranormal nature. Just beyond the gloomy weather and darker evenings, the spooky shadows of Halloween will be cast upon us and I’ve been sleuthing my way into the eerie tales of the occult that lurk amongst us. For many, Halloween embroils a nocturnal sugar binge, plenty of fake blood and the left-over dregs of pumpkin soup. However, All Hallows Eve has a rich and varied heritage spanning hundreds of years, based on when the spirit world and the living world are at their most neighbourly. And so a visit from the undead is par for the course. I don’t know about you, but I don’t necessarily tick the pagan box on the national census and I’m definitely more Hobby Craft than witch craft. But in the weird wonder of October, I grabbed a torch, a reliable friend and the very little courage I possess and headed out on my very own ghost hunt around town. With the Ghost Busters on speed-dial and a healthy dose of scepticism, I set about exploring a number of local sites known for slightly more than just their charm. I peered beyond the cobwebbed gates of Ghostmore (Goatsmoor) Lane as darkness fell, crept through the unearthly echoes of ‘Devils Woods’ and overheard the ominous whisperings of the librarian who had a startling tale or two to tell. According to our sources there’s more than the dewy decimal system to fear between the dusty tomes and aging encyclopaedias in Billericay Library. And you can hardly be called a local without knowing at least one hushed story about Burghstead Lodge... Shifty eyes, anxious overtones. But our most chilling findings came from The Bear Inn of Stock. When Brenda Ellis took over pub 6 years ago, she knew well of its haunted history but couldn’t prepare herself for the scary happenings that have entailed since, by the ghost of Charlie Marshall. Years ago, the pub had a stable where Marshall worked and lived. Punters would leave coins on the wooden beams for him to perform his party trick of clambering up one chimney and reappearing down the other, covered in soot, to catch unawares, the workers in the bar parlour. Everyone knew him as Spider. One Christmas Eve, Spider disappeared up the chimney as he always would in jest, but this time he never came down. It is thought he got stuck in the bacon loft that straddles the two chimneys, where he often hid mischieviously until patrons smoked him down. From that day on, there was no trace of Spider and none of his remains were ever found. Brenda Explained “Everyone warned us of the haunting of Spider Marshall and I was sceptical until one night after we had just bought the place, my husband and I were decorating late into the night. We’d bought a newspaper to read in case we took a break but never got round to even opening it. It was left on the side. We returned the next morning to find all the newspaper pages opened up and scattered on the floor surrounding the fire place as if somebody was about to climb the chimney.” This was the first of many unexplained incidents that customers, staff and even her own sons have reported to her. “The presence here has never felt like an evil one but there is a constant feeling of being watched. My chef caught a man in white out the corner of his eye once, walking around the staff quarters and even went as far as checking the rota to see who was on shift that day. It turned out nobody he wasn’t already aware of was working and the man he’d seen was a mystery.” Curious cases have been so common place that Brenda decided to invite in professional help in the form of psychics, mediums and masters of the macabre. All of which experienced a strange pressure and choking sensation whilst seated near Spiders chimney of choice. Authors have documented and sceptics have speculated but while The Bear Inn is still standing and that bacon loft is still locked shut, there is no conclusion as to where Spider disappeared to that Christmas Eve or, in fact, how he died. The great mystery of the haunted Bear Inn, lives on. By Around Town Journalist Kelly Plume
