You Say Goodbye and I Say Hello... Bye For Now!

Greetings Around Towners,

After a year and four months of writing for Around Town Magazine, I am sad to say it’s goodbye for now as I venture off to go and live in Japan for a while (as you do). It has been a pleasure working with the Around Town team and I’ve met and spoken to so many wonderful locals who each have an amazing story to tell. From my time, I’ve learnt that our towns are brimming with incredible places, people and tales from the great work done by RRAVS to supporting local independent businesses with Shop at my Local – some amazing stories happening right on our doorstep. So, thank you all for taking the time to talk to me and I’ll catch you Around Town again in a year or so!

I’m Jo and I’m pleased to say I will be taking over the reins from the lovely Kelly and bringing you all your local news on behalf of Around Town over the coming months. I’ve always loved hunting down a good story, so I’m very excited to be dusting off my pen and notebook and venturing into town to discover many untold tales. ‘The Cook Report’ this month details the council’s decision to increase the car parking charges and the scrapping of Saturday’s free car parking in Rayleigh.

I hope you enjoy, and I look forward to seeing you ‘Around Town’!

A VIEW FROM THE CHURCH

From Hot Cross Buns to Easter Eggs Hot cross buns, hot cross buns, one a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns - the first lines of the well-known nursery rhyme. But, why hot cross buns? One tradition of Hot Cross Buns dates back to pagan times, when the cross represented the moon and its four quarters. Also, when the Romans arrived in Britain, they introduced spiced buns which were marked with the sign of the cross. On Good Friday in 1361 it is recorded that small spiced cakes, marked with a cross, were distributed by Father Thomas Rockliffe to the poor of St Albans. After this, it became traditional to make and eat hot cross buns every Good Friday. Law’s Grocer’s Manual for 1895 suggested that the use of a cross on bread during Holy Week owed its origins to the strict fasting that was customary in mediaeval times. ‘Only a certain amount of bread could be eaten, and that was duly marked off in the dough by two lines to show its length and breadth. These loaves were sold in some churches, and were carried from place to place by pilgrims.’ Hot Cross Buns are traditionally served on Good Friday and the cross marked on each one is symbolic of the Crucifixion.

Nowadays the cross is usually made using piped pastry. But, why did Jesus have to die on a cross? We know from the Bible that God had tried hard to restore a previous relationship with the people, but over and over again they had failed, until the cross. However hard it seems to accept, Jesus died in our place so that we can have a relationship with God; but more than that. So that we could be forgiven those things that are wrong in our lives and experience the presence and love of God, over and over again.... Easter Day was the great test after Jesus’ body had been taken from the cross and hurriedly laid in a nearby tomb. If Jesus stayed dead then it would mean that he was a cheat. It would show that he did not have the life of God within him. It would show that we couldn’t receive from him the life of God. It would prove that death is the end for everyone.

to take the risk of allowing Jesus into our lives so that we can receive new and eternal life, today and always. The custom of giving eggs at Easter celebrates this new life. For Christians the egg is a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection and as the eggs are cracked open they represent the empty tomb. No-one actually knows when eggs were first used as symbols, but they were always thought to be special because they do not seem alive, yet they have life within them, especially at springtime when chicks hatch out. As you celebrate the joy of the risen Jesus this Easter take time to ask Him to be a part of your life, remembering that Hot Cross Buns to Easter Eggs is significant, taking us from death to life…

Yours in the love of Jesus and wishing you a very Happy Easter.

On the first Easter morning Mary went to the tomb and saw that the stone was rolled back. The body of Jesus had gone, but the clothes in which he had been wrapped were still there. Something wonderful had happened. In some way Jesus was alive. His life has been made available to us. We have

Scrub! This is not an instruction to wash. I mean it as a noun and in the context of plants. Put simply, scrub is native plants which generated naturally. The word ‘scrub’ sounds derogatory: implying that it is stuff to be removed, something untidy, messy. But the nature lover sees it in a different context, as a haven for wildlife. Scrub is a stage between open ground and woodland. We have to control it especially on rare wildflower meadows and, if left, our lawns would eventually turn into scrub. In turn, trees will seed and eventually grow and shade out the shrubby plants and the scrub will be replaced by woodland. Younger scrub is usually bramble, which is so valuable for wildlife. In the spring the flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies and hoverflies. In the summer, spiders adorn the plants with webs and in the autumn it provides fruit for many species, including blackberries for homo sapiens. All year round scrub provides cover for small mammals, including our declining hedgehogs. Scrub provides dense nesting habitat for many bird species, and long-tailed tits have already been building their domed mossy nests in bramble bushes. In the unusually warm weather in March this year, some butterflies emerged, so a walk through scrub yielded a few species including the comma, with its ragged wings, the peacock with the patterns of purple eyes on the wings and bright yellow brimstones. Hawthorn and blackthorn are other plants which will flourish in scrub, and provide a succession of white flowers in the spring and berries in the autumn. The perfect scrub has a mix of plants including tall herbs and grasses growing along its edges. Sadly, scrub is not always valued so is not protected, like other wildlife–rich habitats such as ancient woodland. Our demand for land for producing food or for development leaves little room for it so a patch can be a little gem. I am always looking for scrub, especially in the spring as with it will come birdsong, and the bigger the patch, then the greater the variety of song.

Residents Fear Impact of Car Park Charges Increase on Local Business Plans to significantly increase car park charges in Rayleigh town centre and scrap free parking on Saturday afternoons has caused uproar amongst Rayleigh residents. From 1 April, motorists will have to pay an extra 20 pence per hour to park their cars, when the price goes up from 80 pence to a £1. Free parking from 1pm on Saturdays will also be abolished as part of the plans. The increases, which were approved at the end of January and is part of Rochford Council’s four year financial strategy that is looking to increase revenue, has sparked fear in local residents and traders, who are concerned the charges will deter the current trade that comes from both within and outside of the town. Over 30 people, including councillors from parish, district and county levels as well as members of Rayleigh Chamber of Trade, turned out to protest against the increases back in February. Carl Watson, chairman of Rayleigh Chamber of Trade, who runs Squires coffee shop in the High Street, said ‘I was really pleased with the amount of people who turned out to protest. This (the increases) could potentially turn Rayleigh into a ghost town on Saturday afternoons’. The decision to proceed with the increases has caused even

greater controversy in light of the ‘Shop at My Local’ campaign, run within the Rochford District Local authority boundary by the council and a range of partners. The aim of the campaign is to encourage trade to the Hockley, Rayleigh and Rochford areas, by supporting traders in raising their profiles locally and online. For local traders, the move to increase car park charges, seems to contradict what ‘Shop At My Local’ stands for. Mr Watson continued ‘Rochford Council is involved with a shop local campaign, and there is a town team trying to promote and regenerate towns and bring people in, and it has the nerve to do this’. Plans to introducing parking charges on Saturdays have not gone without objection within the council either. Despite, the council’s statement that the charges will ‘encourage the turnover of parking and make available more spaces for visitors’, not everyone agrees. A compromise motion, to increase the weekly charges but keep free Saturday afternoons, raised by Lib Dem Rochford councillor for Downhall and Rawreth, Chris Black, went forward to vote on 25 February. Unfortunately, for worried tradesmen, this motion was overturned, and the introduction of the charge will still go ahead on 1 April.

The town remains concerned, with a number of local residents and businesses commenting, via social media and online blogs, on how the charging will discourage trade from the area. Local business, Feathering Your Nest, a gift shop based in the heart of Rayleigh High Street, said ‘The decision to impose parking charges on Saturday afternoon will have a huge impact on the town. Many families prefer to take advantage of free parking and enjoy shopping, eating and using the local facilities by staying longer. Their decision will lose more revenue as customers will choose to shop elsewhere’. Sources: Echo Online, onlinefocus.org

R AYLEI G H ROTARY CLUB I hope that you find the monthly report of our clubs progress of interest. We continue to work hard in preparation for The Concert in the Park on 28th June. Although it may seem some time away, it is amazing how much effort and organisation is needed to pull it all together. Each year there are more ‘formalities’ and the requirements of Health and Safety etc. are many and varied! Our dedicated website www.concertinthepark.org.uk giving details of the event now even includes a video of the English Pops Orchestra to whet your appetite and we have recently reformatted the site to be fully compatible with smartphones and tablets. We are also pleased to announce that we have received sponsorship support from BTMK solicitors and tickets are expected to go on sale in April. More information is on our website and will be in the local press. We are proposing that a significant proportion of the profits from this concert will go to Southend RNLI and ASSET (an organisation that helps purchase new equipment for Southend Hospital), so you can not only enjoy the concert but also help support local charities. On the social side, we had a fun visit to Romford Dog Stadium and were pleased to include some members of Rochford Rotary Club and also some guests. As I have indicated in the past, we always are happy to welcome guests at our weekly meetings, for more details of our club or if you would like to join us on a Monday evening please contact Andrew Shackleton on 01702 201783 or robertashackleton@googlemail.com.

RAYLEIGH LIONS CLUB The Rayleigh Lions Quiz Night was a “ROARING SUCCESS” with the best attendance for a few years and lots of charities benefited. The Winners ‘Pond Life’ won £100 and donated this to their chosen charity Help for Heroes. The 2nd prize of £50 was donated to “COPES” who are a cancer support group based at Southend Hospital. 3rd prize of £25 was donated to the British Heart Foundation. The quiz master also donated his fee of £25 to Southend Hospital Breast Screening. The overall proceeds on the night totalled £315, which was rounded up to £500 from The Lions Club of Rayleigh Charity Fund which was donated to Southend Hospitals “Bosum Buddies”. Also on the night, a young man by the name of Charlie Berwick was selling sweets for his chosen Charity “Click Sergent” and raised £72.00, to which The Lions again donated a further £50 to this charity. Once again a big thank you to all attended to make this possible!

AN INSPIRING NIGHT WITH THE MUSHROOM THEATRE COMPANY I spent a wonderful evening at SEEVIC College in Benfleet recently, as a member of the audience for a production by the Mushroom Theatre Company. The company is run by a group of adult volunteers, led by founder Penny Bubb, who some 10 years ago created a theatre company, in which able bodied and handicapped children could perform side by side. The company put on a 10th anniversary show, which was a mixture of numbers from classic musicals, like Les Miserables, Blood Brothers and The Lion King, as well as sketches and individual solo performances. The really wonderful thing about this theatre company is to see both able bodied and handicapped kids

Method: 1. Preheat oven to 190 C / 375 F or gas mark 5. Heat half the oil in a saucepan. Add the onion and garlic and fry for 5 minutes. Add the lamb and cook until it loses its pinkness. Add the tomatoes and can juice, rosemary and salt and pepper to taste, and stir well. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a frying pan. When it is hot, add the aubergine slices and brown on both sides. Add a little more oil if necessary. Drain the slices on kitchen towels. 3. Mix the ricotta, eggs and single cream together. 4.
