Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company

policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Rayleigh & Eastwood areas and

manager Chris Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I have lived in this constituency for 17 years now and know it well. Our country has been through a difficult time economically in the past few years but is now recovering with good growth and employment at a near all-time high. I want to see this economic success, achieved under a Conservative Government, continue for my constituents in the months and years ahead. In 2016 the British people took a fundamental decision to leave the European Union. I campaigned actively for Brexit and have subsequently supported it in the House of Commons, including voting for the Bill which allowed the Prime Minister to trigger Article 50 and begin our withdrawal from the EU. I believe that however people voted in the referendum, whether to Leave or Remain, the decision has now been taken and it is right to rally behind the Prime Minister and do our best to support her to achieve a good deal for Britain in the forthcoming tough negotiations with the EU. The alternative choice is a potentially chaotic coalition, led by a weak leader in Jeremy Corbyn, propped up by Nicola Sturgeon and the Scottish Nationalists. I believe this would be disastrous for Britain’s Future. Lastly, I believe I have been a hardworking constituency MP for 16 years, visiting all 34 schools in my constituency, defending local Post Offices, backing local GP Practices and encouraging charities and community groups. I do hope that the electors of Rayleigh and Wickford will allow me to continue working hard on their behalf at the forthcoming General Election on June 8th. Mark Francois Conservative Candidate for Rayleigh and Wickford

Promoted by Hilton Brown, on behald of Mark Francois, both of Rayleigh and Wickford Conservative Association, 25 Bellingham Lane, Rayleigh, Essex, SS6 7ED. Printed by Black Square Print Media, Graphic House, Billericay, Essex, CM12 0DX

Mark Daniels working hard for the people of Rayleigh & Wickford I was born in Rochford in 1973 and I have lived all my life in the local area, at present I live with my wife and three daughters in hawkwell. I’ve been a train driver for 25 years; a working-class man, growing increasingly disillusioned with the state of our country. I’m sick of seeing my home and the good and honest people who live here struggling under wave after wave of relentless Conservative cuts – cuts which hit the poorest and most desperate in our society the hardest. Slashed public funding has led to oversubscribed and

underfunded schools, the decimation of our local police force, neglected roads and infrastructure, and a systematic failure to maintain the NHS. Isn’t it about time you had a Member of Parliament who’s prepared to speak up for your needs? Vote for me on June 8th, and give Labour a chance to make a difference here.

Flat Roofing Guaranteed for Life Advertorial

Around 70% of homes in the UK incorporate a mineral felt flat roof. Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home. A failing roof & the warning signs - Look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. Felt will attract moss and algae further degrading the roof surface.

IMPORTANT: - ALL PROPERTY OWNERS PLEASE BE AWARE When a flat roof is replaced there are Part L Building Regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. Please call for free information regarding the Part L Law. The home-owner should also be made aware that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old. In 1999, High-Tech Roofing first introduced the most advanced flat roof technology to the

The Problem

homeowner. Protan, based in Norway, has a pedigree in the design and manufacture of water - proofing materials dating back to 1939, and producing the first roofing membrane in 1971. Protan is our preferred PVC single-ply flat roofing system and will cope with all climates, millions of square meters are installed here and abroad with a proven track record stretching over four decades. Protan is predominantly an architect-specified roofing system, winning many awards serving the very competitive commercial sector.

The Solution

A High-Tech roof is dimensionally stable and solar reflective, the material is unaffected by climate change and 100% resistant to moss &

algae growth. The membrane has a unique anti-slip finish allowing the roof to be walked on and is aesthetically pleasing. As it is vapour permeable product it will never blister or become brittle and crack. High-Tech will create a 100% storm resistant watertight roof, maintenance free and guaranteed for life never to leak.

Let there be natural light

Many of our clients are requesting skylights and roof lanterns to be installed in conjunction with our roofing system. We offer a huge range of style and are all made to measure complementing any home. High-Tech will carry out all structural works along with all external and internal finishing works. High-Tech can turn an extension or an ageing conservatory into a stunning thermally efficient orangery compliant with Building Regulation.

Nature Notes Written by Neil Sumner

of Rayleigh

Creative, competitive, conscientious

PATIOS • DRIVEWAYS • FENCING • DECKING • PONDS PLANTING • TURFING • CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 The walk is undulating, through oak and birch, sometimes opening out to spreads of restored heathland. We are at Lingwood Common, which is within a mosaic of nature reserves and wildlife sites collectively known as Danbury Ridge and featuring ancient woodlands, wildflower meadows, heaths, lowland raised bogs and streams. This area was immortalised in the book ‘The Hill of Summer’ by J A Baker. Written in the early 60’s, the book includes sightings of wildlife long gone from the area: Red Squirrels, Common Redstarts and Hawfinches. But Danbury Ridge still has much to credit it. As we walked past reams of Bluebells we heard Willow Warblers and Nightingales, rare now in South Essex, singing in the denser valleys. A Lesser Spotted Woodpecker called from high in the trees but we couldn’t locate it: the name is due to its smaller size but could also mean that it is less often seen. Neither did we find any of the Adders which bathe on the heath edges although they are easily missed, being so well camouflaged against dead bracken. Alerted by a rustle in dead leaves under low stems of bramble we glimpse small dark brown furry bodies chasing each other rapidly through the dead leaves. These were probably Bank Voles, which are more likely to be found in woods than their cousins, the Field Voles. Our explorations took us east to Pheasant House Farm which has nearly 40 acres of meadow grazed by cattle and rich enough to house hundreds of butterflies in July and to provide hunting grounds for Tawny Owls and Kestrels that dwell in the nestboxes. The farm has been restored as a working asset by Essex Wildlife Trust, with dilapidated buildings and fences removed. Nearly 2,000 hedgerows trees have been planted here to link the surrounding woodlands. Nearby is Woodham Walter, with its steep slopes and Sessile Oaks in some small parts being visually reminiscent of Welsh hanging oakwoods. We end at Danbury Common where more Nightingales greet us. One sings very obligingly from the lower branches of a nearby oak sapling, giving us a perfect view. It obviously hadn’t read the books that describe it as a shy and skulking bird. We are grateful for that, as we are for the work of Essex Wildlife Trust, the National Trust and the volunteers in the local communities that make this such a special area.

wallet workout Go grab your purse or wallet. You need it next to you during the five minutes it’ll take you to read this. However, it should be lucrative. Our wallets are a treasure trove of financial information. One of my party tricks is to take a look at someone’s and save them £100s in minutes – and now I want to do it for you. This is my wallet workout, a self-inspection of contents to save you cash. 1. Pull out your debit card – do you have a winner? A debit card reveals where you bank; and mistakes there are a plenty. Do you pay a monthly fee? If so, work out its annual cost (£15/month = £180) and then ask yourself if the ‘extras’ the bank gives are worth this. If not, cancel it. Plus, if you were flogged it or told you had to have it, you may be able to reclaim all packaged bank account fees (see www.mse.me/reclaimpackagefees). Does your bank make you happy? If not, then www.FirstDirect.com is worth considering switching to. It’s a fee-free account (as long as you pay in £1,000 a month), pays switchers £100 and has a linked 6% savings account. It’s won every service poll I’ve ever done, with 92% of its customers rating it ‘great’. Or www.Co-operativeBank.co.uk is giving £150, plus up to £5.50 if you qualify for its Everyday Rewards scheme, and 70% of its customers rate it ‘great’. Are you overdrawn? Debit cards can be debt cards too, and sometimes costlier than credit. For small overdrafts, you can switch again to www.FirstDirect.com which gives a £250 0% overdraft, and the £100 switch bonus will help clear some of it. Or the www.Nationwide. co.uk FlexDirect gives a 0% overdraft for the first 12 months. For larger amounts, you can use special 0% credit cards to clear it - see www.mse.me/moneytransfers

Do you have savings? If so, use your bank account to max the interest, as some now pay by far the highest interest on savings. The top picks are www.Santander.co.uk’s 123, which pays 3% on up to £20,000 and www. LloydsBank.com’s ClubLloyds, which pays 4% on £4,000-£5,000. There’s also the www.Tsb. co.uk Classic Plus, which pays 5% on up to £2,000, plus up to £5-a-month cashback on contactless purchases. 2. Pull out your photo driving licence – is it valid? A whopping 2.2 million licences have a picture that’s out of date. To check yours, look at section 4b on your photo card licence, it’ll show the expiry date. If you don’t and it’s expired, you risk a fine of up to £1,000. You can renew it online at www.gov.uk/renewdriving-licence or at the post office.

“...YOU’LL RISK A FINE OF UP TO £1,000” 3. Got a credit card(s) that you pay interest on? STOP It’s possible to save £100s or even £1,000s a year by getting a 0% balance transfer credit card – that’s where the new card pays off debt on old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. This means more of your repayments clear the actual debt rather than just paying the interest, making you debt-free quicker. There’s up to 40 months 0% available with a fee, or 24 months 0% fee-free. My full best balance transfers guide at www. moneysavingexpert.com/bts includes a free eligibility calculator which gives card-by-card odds of which you’re most likely to get – so you can home in on your winner. Savings can be huge, as Victoria tweeted

me: “I got my fiancé to transfer his credit card balances to a 0%, saved £1,500 interest.” 4. Do you have a donor card? It’s a big decision, but joining the Organ Donor Register could mean you save or improve up to nine lives. If it’s for you, sign up at www. organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23. 5. Got a credit card and always repay in full? Make it PAY YOU Every time you use a card, the retailer pays the card firm a transaction fee. With a cashback card, you effectively get this put back in your pocket. As new regulations have cut these fees recently, cashback’s been cut too, yet Amex cards are mostly exempted, so still pay a good whack. The fee-free www.AmericanExpress.com Everyday pays 5% cashback (max £100) for the first three months, then tiered up to 1.25% after. The best non-Amex ishttp:// money.asda.com Mastercard which pays 0.5% cashback (1% in Asda). As Anna tweeted me: “@MartinSLewisGlad I read about Amex cashback card: I’ll get over £200 paid.” Yet only do this if you’ll set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month or you’ll pay 22.9% (Amex) or 18.9% (Asda) rep APR interest, which more than wipes the cashback gain. 6.Sign up for a my Waitrose card for FREE daily tea and coffee Get the www.waitrose.com loyalty card –

then in most stores you can get a totally free takeaway hot drink, every day from the selfservice machine without buying anything. 7. Not got a credit card…? You’re less protected Pay using a credit card and you get extra protection under the ‘Section 75 law’ – which means buy something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card, and pay for any of it (even 1p) on it, and the card firm’s jointly liable with the retailer for the entire amount. This get-out-of-jail-free card is hugely powerful if the retailer goes bust or won’t play fair, as Michelle found. She tweeted: “Successful Section 75 credit card claim, refunded £125 for non-delivery of phone order, used template on your website, thanks.” PS: If you’ve been burnt with credit cards in the past, or have little financial discipline, then ignore this point. TriaThlon

After completing a 1 mile swim, a 25 mile bike ride or a 6.2 mile run, I am certain that a great sense of achievement would overcome any feelings of exhaustion or tiredness. The ultimate test in stamina would be completing all three of these back to back. Welcome to the world of Triathlon!

The famous London Marathon sends more and more people all over Essex to the streets, stepping up their training in preparation for the great event. However, Triathlon is fast becoming the new way to test your stamina and being used all the time to raise money for charities in need. My first exposure to the world of Triathlon was while watching the Sydney Olympics in 2000, a number of people plunged into Sydney harbour with the Opera house glistening in the background, they were starting the first leg of the gruelling event. After the swim a commentator then said “now for the 25 mile bike ride”, my eyebrows immediately rose, but nearly entered a state of shock when I realised it climaxed with a 6 mile run. Now, 15 years later, I can totally see that if you are ready to test yourself to limit that Triathlon not only offers you variety, but pushes your entire body to the maximum. There are people that train individually for such an event and produce great results. However, there is a club in Essex that are tapping into those that like to train within a group of people and also those who thrive the competitive element of sport and wish to compete against and train with peers and friends regularly. The East Essex Triathlon Club based just down the A127 in Rayleigh has been going for many years and they are the club to join if you are looking to train for events throughout the year in Essex. They train every week, Saturday morning they do a long run and on Sunday morning they hit the roads of Essex on their bikes, this all starts from the Market Car Park in Rayleigh. During the week they have Tuesday night track sessions

at the Basildon Sporting Village as well as Monday night swimming sessions at Runnymede pool Castle Point and Thursday night at the Basildon Sporting Village again. I have been speaking to Zena, a member of the club about Triathlon and its growing popularity. It seems as though Triathlon is now becoming the ultimate challenge, even rivalling marathons and half marathons? Why is popularity increasing? More generations of 40+ adults are still enjoying sport. Some may have come from other sports such as athletics or swimming and realise they can still be competitive at triathlon, which celebrates winners from age groups in 5 year gaps. Many people start triathlon just for a one off event but stay because they find it a friendly inclusive sport. We have also had Olympic and world championship success with the likes of the Brownlee brothers and Chrissie Wellington which has increased the popularity too. London 2012 no doubt has had a big impact, especially the success of the Brownlee brothers as you have mentioned. With Rio looming, what can we expect from East Essex Club to get more youngsters taking an interest and giving it a go? We have regular training sessions for any young people wishing to take part in triathlon and also host a number of events each year including the Go-Tri series, which provides a short, low key taster event at Basildon Sporting Village (for adults and children) and can be entered on the day! The East Essex Club offers a chance to train with Triathlon enthusiasts for either a one off challenge or to explore your hobby of competitive running, swimming and biking. The price of annual membership is £33 for adults and £12 for children and with 300 members from 8-80, the club is going from strength to strength. ROTARY CLUB OF RAYLEIGH MILL For most weeks in the year, we meet on Mondays as a club, with our members enjoying a meal at The Rayleigh Club near Hullbridge, Essex. It is followed by a particular kind of meeting such as ‘committee’, ‘business’ and ‘speaker’ - the latter gives us an opportunity to invite a well-known personality or charity organisation to keep us informed about their work or life. We have a members’ raffle at the end of the evening and our Sergeant-At-Arms is an appointed member of the club who manages to extract small amounts of money from us in friendly fun from personal observations of us which goes to our charity box. The evening is run by our President who sits at the top table with his Secretary and we welcome our visiting guests too. Toasts are made to the Queen and our Rotary organisation. We have a Treasurer to manage our accounts and appointed officers to involve us in the more gentle sports, a press officer to publicise our events, an IT specialist to handle our information, a webmaster to run this website and particular members who take on responsibility for an event eg. our Charity Golf Day and our social trips and dinner dances. Our Foundation officer looks to promote the work of Rotary eg. Purple Pinkie support to End Polio Campaign.

RAYLEIGH LIONS CLUB The Lions Club of Rayleigh is part of the International Association of Lions Clubs, and our primary aim is to raise and distribute funds within out local area. The Lions Club Of Rayleigh was chartered in 1974 and serves the Rayleigh, Hockley, Hullbridge and Rochford areas. Revd Nick Rowan

Questions? At the time I am writing the news is full of campaigning for the forthcoming General Election on Thursday 8th June. Politicians have different ideas of how to respond to the issues facing the economy, the national health service and social care, and education. They also have different visions of how our country will trade and relate with the European Union and the rest of the world following Brexit. There is much for all of us to think and reflect on before casting our votes. Sometimes people say that faith has no part to play in politics. I have heard it argued that faith should be a private and personal thing? But, this does not reflect the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus taught that Christians should make a difference in the world around them. That they should get involved because of their faith. Jesus urges his followers to be ‘Salt’ and ‘Light’. As ‘Salt’ we should add flavour to the world around us, a flavour inspired by Christian moral teaching which can basically be summed us as “loving our neighbour as our self”. As ‘Salt’ we should also seek to preserve what is good. As ‘Light’ we should highlight

where there is darkness, injustice and suffering. As ‘Light’ we should shine, be seen, get involved, be part of the solution to the issues facing the world today. Christians everywhere and throughout the ages have prayed, as part of The Lord’s Prayer, “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done, on earth as in heaven”. This is another reason why politics and the life of the Christians cannot be separated. For this reason the Church of England calls its members to play a full part in the political life of the nation and to support candidates and the future government with their prayers. It is important that we do this in an informed way. This is why at Holy Trinity we will again be hosting Election Hustings where candidates for the Rayleigh and Wickford constituency will be asked questions about their views and their party’s policies. The Hustings will take place on Saturday 3rd June at 8:00pm in Holy Trinity Church. All in the community are welcome to attend. Best wishes Nick
