One issue that has appeared a lot in my postbag/email inbox over the past few months has been the performance of the Southend to London Liverpool Street line, which is run by Abellio Greater Anglia.
Constituents have complained about a number of matters, including the cost of tickets, poor reliability, delays to services (and lack of information when this happens) and old rolling stock, which lacks air conditioning unlike on the parallel C2C line into Fenchurch Street.
they should expect. On the point about lack of information for passengers during delays, he explained that Abellio have now started installing Ipads in their drivers’ cabs, so that drivers can be sent up to the minute information on delays and then inform passengers in turn.
Abellio have recently won the extended franchise to run the line until 2025 and they are promising new investment and a range of improvements as a result. I have been in correspondence with their Managing Director, Jamie Burles, for some months now to highlight constituents’ complaints but following the franchise award I thought it would be good to meet him to talk about problems with the service and how things will hopefully improve - and in early October I did just that.
As part of the new franchise,in 2018/19Abellio will begin introducing over 1,000 new carriages across East Anglia, including on the Southend line. Costing over £1 billion, these new trains should be state-of-the-art, with air conditioning, wi-fi and much greater reliability than the old trains they will replace. As he argued, this should also help to reduce delays significantly.
To be fair, Mr Burles admitted that in recent months passengers have not been receiving the quality of service
This all sounds encouraging but the new trains are still some years away. In the meantime I shall keep up the pressure on Abellio to raise their game and to provide a more reliable service, which my constituents would no doubt wish to see.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company
policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Rayleigh & Eastwood areas and
manager Chris Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 The colours of autumn in November are dominated by yellows and orange. A low sun, light diluted by mist, is a pale yellow, the leaves of oak trees are of a russet orange and patches of dying bracken turn yellow before orangey-brown as they collapse upon the woodland or heathland floor. Robins create flashes of dark orange as they fly up to a low perch on the edge of a bush. Other wildlife is giving way as we walk along woodland paths. Squirrels, with mouths full of acorns, scamper up the trunks and the white rumps of Jays flash between the branches before alighting somewhere where their colours camouflage them from all but the trained eye. At times we hear the calls of mixed flocks of tits and other small birds moving through the woods. Or from the canopy we may hear the ‘pik’ call of a Great-spotted Woodpecker or the mournful cry of a Siskin. In the patches of sky above, there are flocks of Woodpigeons, gulls and chacking Jackdaws moving between fields and roosts. Recently as I walked in ancient woodland I recalled a November day several decades ago. We were a young family, new to South Essex, migrants of opportunity from the North West. I saw similarities in the inland landscape but, here, more open arable fields and less grazing and silage grassland, and the brooks in the land we left behind were lined with alder trees. In the woods, there were subtle differences too. Although Oak and Ash are predominant in both, here we have more Sweet Chestnut and Hornbeam. So, on a cold and misty Sunday afternoon it was a novelty to find the bounty of edible chestnuts on the woodland floor and we took many home in the early dusk. With glowing faces, we experimentally roasted them on a gas fire (don’t try this at home folks). Returning to the present, I stopped to take in the structure of a magnificent ancient Oak. But my mind went back in time again when I thought of the centuries it had endured. How many birds and animals, many species now gone from here, had perched, bred, roosted or hibernated in its branches and cavities? If it had not been witness to the slaughter that took place here after the Peasants Revolt, perhaps the tree that begat the acorn from which it grew had done so. Many of its cousins were once in woodland or farmland and are now surrounded by houses but, if allowed to do so, will carry on cleansing our air and water and giving us a lifelong and seasonally changing picture, a piece of precious natural heritage. You can enjoy a guided Autumn Colour Walk from Belfairs Woodland Centre on 13th Nov (http://tinyurl. com/h4bneyl) or a Veteran Tree Walk on 3rd December at Mill Meadows, Billericay (http://www.millmeadows. org.uk/).

MORTGAGES
Is now the perfect time to cut the cost of your mortgage? Rates are at historic lows - for the first time a two-year-fix is below 1% and a ten year fix is 2.39%. Many people can cut their mortgage costs by £1,000s. Yet after Brexit many are asking if could it get even cheaper. My mailbag’s been rammed with messages from nervous mortgage-holders wondering whether they should do anything with their mortgage due to the uncertain economy right now. I don’t have a crystal ball and don’t know what the future holds, but in short here’s my analysis on the situation… 1) Will fixes get cheaper? The rate at which fixes are set is based on complex ‘long-term City swap rates’. And the markets’ gloom has pushed those down, so fix rates could (there’s a lot of crystal-ball gazing here) trickle down a touch further. 2) What about variable rates? There’s certainly pressure on them to drop, Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England, has indicated cuts that may happen, though the last meeting of the bank it kept them on hold. So should people wait? The big picture... mortgages are at historically cheap rates already. If you can slash £1,000s off your cost and get peace of mind that you can afford it (and if you’re worried about uncertainty, go for a longer fix), then do it. Yes, there’s a chance it could get even cheaper, but if you’re bagging something that’s easily affordable, that safety and certainty has a value too. Playing the market is never a sure-fire win. And big savings are possible, such as Kperat’s, who emailed me: “Following your email we did some research, fixed at 1.24%
for 2 yrs, reduced term to 13 yrs without paying much more a month. Will be saving about £20,000, even after fees. THANKS.” Just how cheap are mortgages? HSBC is offering a 0.99% two-year-fix, though you’ll need a good credit score, to be borrowing less than 65% of your house’s value and pay a huge fee of £1,499. Yet see this is an example of the type of rates available. At 90% of your house’s value you could get 2.49% fee-free for two years, or if you want to fix for longer, there are five-yearfixes in the 2%s too. So examine what your rate is now; many people are on their lender’s standard variable rate, the rate you go to when a fix or discount ends. So for Barclays, RBS, Halifax, NatWest and most Nationwide customers, it’s around 4%, though this is likely to drop if there is a rate cut. And just remember, every 1% point you cut off your mortgage is around £80/month less per £1,000 of mortgage.
“I’LL GET 6 YRS OF CHARGES BACK AND A GOODWILL £70” How to find the cheapest mortgages For easy benchmarking, to see what’s out there, start with a comparison site that includes all deals, including ‘direct only’, those that aren’t offered by broker. These include my Mortgage Comparison at www. mse.me/mortgagebestbuys or sites such as TotallyMoney.com. Yet it’s not just the rate that counts: these days getting accepted isn’t easy. Both your credit score and whether you’re deemed able to afford the mortgage count. (The latter is often calculated as if interest rates
are far higher than they are, so you can still pay if rates do rise.) Matching your characteristics to available mortgages is something a good mortgage broker can do that you can’t do yourself. But do ask if the broker will check all deals available to them and not just a panel of lenders. Also, check how much using a broker will cost and ensure you use a qualified one. Some phone-only brokers such as www.LandC.co.uk are fee-free but if you want face-to-face help, ask friends for a local broker recommendation or use www. Unbiased.co.uk or www.VouchedFor.co.uk to find one. Don’t ignore the fees The smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact of fees, especially on smaller mortgages. A good way to compare mortgages is to divide the fee across the discount or fixed period. So a £1,200 fee on a two-year (i.e., 24-month) deal is £50 a month – add that to the monthly repayment. And if you usewww.mse.me/mortgage bestbuys to compare, the ‘total cost’ function does this automatically for you. Fix or variable rate? The advantage of a fix is you get price and budgeting certainty that the rate won’t move for a set time. Variable deals move with UK interest rates – and sometimes just at the provider’s whim. Generally, you pay a
martin L E W IS Money Saving Expert
little more to fix, but not much. Ask yourself how much you think rates will rise over the period. If safety’s what counts for you, err on the side of fixing, and fixing for longer. Got savings? They could get you a better mortgage For this, you need to find your current loanto-value (LTV), the proportion of the value you’re borrowing. E.g., £80k on a £100k property is 80% LTV. At every 5% LTV threshold from 95% down to 60%, deals tend to get better, so a little extra can have a big impact on your rate. For example, if you’ve a £150,000 home, and want a £137,000 remortgage, that’s 91% LTV, and the top 5yr fix is 4.49%. Yet use £2,000 of savings to reduce the borrowing, and you’d then be at 90% LTV – where the top 5yr fix is 2.84%, saving c. £1,600/year in payments. Rayleigh Remembers....... Annual Services of Remembrance will be held across Rayleigh on Remembrance Sunday, 13 November, alongside the Royal British Legion Parade through the town and Wreath Laying outside the Royal British Legion Memorial Hall. TheCivic Parade through the Town Centre, will form up in the Websters Way Car Park at 9.30am and march off at 9.40am, with the salute being taken at the High Street/ Bellingham Lane junction before the parade reaches Holy Trinity Church, where there will be a Service of Remembrance held at 10.15am, with a parallel service being held in the Parish Centre Main Hall at the same time. For those not wishing to attend the Church, there will be a shorter outside Service in front The Royal British Legion Memorial Hall, London Hill, commencing at 10.40am. All the Services and will be concluded by 11.15am, and there will be the opportunity for all to join with the Chairman of Rayleigh Town Council, Councillor Mrs Christine Callis, and other local Civic Dignitaries, together with various Uniformed Groups to attend the Wreath Laying at The Royal British Legion War Memorial Wall, London Hill, where this short Service will be held. On this Remembrance Sunday we are particularly recallingthe 100th Anniversaries of the Battle of Jutland (31 May – 1 June 1916)and the Battle of
the Somme (1 July – 18 November 1916). The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle of the First World War. It was the only time that the British and German fleets of ‘dreadnought’ battleships actually came to blows.Although it failed to achieve the decisive victory each side hoped for, the Battle of Jutland confirmed British naval dominance and secured its control of shipping lanes, allowing Britain to implement the blockade that would contribute to Germany’s eventual defeat in 1918. The Battle of the Somme was a joint operation between British and French forces intended to achieve a decisive victory over the Germans on the Western Front after 18 months of trench deadlock. In December 1915, Allied commanders had met to discuss strategies for the following year and agreed to launch a joint French and British attack in the region of the River Somme in the summer of 1916. The location was mainly chosen as it was where French and British forces on the Western Front met. But the German attack on the French at Verdun in February 1916 forced Britain to take the lead in the Somme offensive. The Somme was a strategic necessity fought to meet the needs of an international alliance and British commanders learned difficult but important lessons that would contribute to eventual Allied victory in 1918. It has been seen in previous years how important this day is for so many in Rayleigh when those of the Town come together in Remembrance of all those who have given so much for us. During each of the services the following dedication will be spoken, “When you go home, tell them of us and say,for your tomorrow, we gave our today” (Kohima Epitaph). We give thanks for all who gave so much in the cause of peace, not only giving their today, but their lives also…‘Lest we Forget’ Yours in the love of Jesus, Parish Office 01268 742151 info@parishofrayleigh.org.uk

ROTARY CLUB OF RAYLEIGH MILL For most weeks in the year, we meet on Mondays as a club, with our members enjoying a meal at The Rayleigh Club near Hullbridge, Essex. It is followed by a particular kind of meeting such as ‘committee’, ‘business’ and ‘speaker’ - the latter gives us an opportunity to invite a well-known personality or charity organisation to keep us informed about their work or life. We have a members’ raffle at the end of the evening and our Sergeant-At-Arms is an appointed member of the club who manages to extract small amounts of money from us in friendly fun from personal observations of us which goes to our charity box. The evening is run by our President who sits at the top table with his Secretary and we welcome our visiting guests too. Toasts are made to the Queen and our Rotary organisation. We have a Treasurer to manage our accounts and appointed officers to involve us in the more gentle sports, a press officer to publicise our events, an IT specialist to handle our information, a webmaster to run this website and particular members who take on responsibility for an event eg. our Charity Golf Day and our social trips and dinner dances. Our Foundation officer looks to promote the work of Rotary eg. Purple Pinkie support to End Polio Campaign.

FORMULA 1 Lewis Hamilton kept his slim world championship hopes alive with a crushing victory over his rival Nico Rosberg in the Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday.
an investigation by the stewards - he remained in the lead. Despite being bumped on to the grass, Rosberg retained second ahead of Verstappen.
Hamilton, who recorded his second triumph in seven days following his masterclass in the United States, is now 19 points adrift of Rosberg with just two races remaining.
Esteban Gutierrez, Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein then tripped over one another with the latter sustaining significant damage to the front of his Manor. His race was over, and the safety car was deployed with debris scattered across the track.
The championship battle remains out of the Briton’s control, however, after Rosberg survived a lunge from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to cross the line in second place. Indeed Rosberg will now secure his maiden title if he wins the Brazilian Grand Prix. The German can even afford to finish second and third at the remaining two races to clinch the crown. Verstappen finished third ahead of Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel, but the former was given a five-second elapsed penalty for leaving the track at turn one and refusing to give the place to Vettel. The German was subsequently bumped up to third. Hamilton, 31, revealed earlier this week that he is relishing the challenge of usurping his Mercedes teammate Rosberg at the top of the championship standings.
When the race restarted on lap four, Rosberg failed to threaten Hamilton, and from there the show was all but over. Vettel, on a longer first stint, led for 12 laps but, after he pitted at the end of lap 32, and Hamilton was released back into the lead, it was only a matter of the world champion nursing his Mercedes home, which he did to fine effect. Hamilton took the chequered flag a distant eight seconds ahead of Rosberg to move alongside four-time world champion Alain Prost, into second on the all-time winners’ list. Only Michael Schumacher has tasted more victories in Formula One’s long history than the man from Stevenage.
And the Briton was in inspired form from the get-go here, comfortably faster than Rosberg in practice and qualifying before claiming the 51st victory of his career with a dominant display in front of 135,000 fans.
For Rosberg, second could yet be enough as he bids to emulate his father Keke, the 1982 world champion, and win the title. In a race of little drama, Verstappen attempted to pass Rosberg on lap 50 after the German came unstuck while lapping Carlos Sainz, but Verstappen failed to make his move stick.
Hamilton’s season has been plagued by engine troubles and slow starts but, for the second race in succession, the triple world champion got the perfect getaway to retain the lead on the near 1,000-metre run down to turn one.
There was controversy late on, too, after Verstappen was stripped of his podium place following a timed penalty which promoted Vettel to third and Daniel Ricciardo to fourth.
But perhaps preoccupied with keeping Rosberg behind, Hamilton locked his front-right tyre and ran on to the grass. He essentially missed out the opening four turns before rejoining the track but, as Rosberg and Verstappen banged wheels behind him - a coming together which was declared a racing incident following
Verstappen, who only discovered he had been penalised as he prepared to step on to the podium, was adjudged to have left the track and gained an advantage. Jenson Button, the 2009 world champion, crossed the line in 12th with British rookie Jolyon Palmer 14th.
