Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company
policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Rayleigh & Eastwood areas and
manager Chris Miller agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Rayleigh residents as well. Castledon School, which is based in Wickford is a special school, catering for children with special and additional needs and taking pupils from the ages of five through to sixteen. The school has converted to become an Academy and it enjoys a good reputation among parents who have children that might require the special environment that it provides.
mark francois conservative Parliamentary mP for rayleigh & Wickford
This month brings some good news from the Wickford part of my Rayleigh and Wickford Constituency but something which also has positive implications for some
However, Castledon School does not have a sixth form and indeed none of the special schools in South Essex have such provision at present. This obviously limits the options for those pupils turning sixteen who might want to remain in the traditional school environment whilst completing their education up to eighteen.
Given this, I was strongly supportive of a recent bid by Castledon School to be granted sixth form status and I am delighted that they have recently heard back from the Department for Education to confirm that they will be allowed to proceed and establish a new sixth form, starting from September 2017. The aim is that this should be open to pupils across the South Essex area, including across my constituency, who might have children who could benefit from such provision. As regular readers of Around Town Rayleigh will know I am pro sixth forms generally (I strongly supported them at Sweyne Park and FitzWimarc) and so I am very pleased that a specialist school like Castledon will now be able to provide sixth form provision across South Essex as well.

Neilsumner123@aol.com twitter.com/neilsumner123 On a warm day last month at Rainham Marshes RSPB reserve, dragonflies were prolific and being hunted by Hobbies. This year, dragonflies were late in the season and hence Hobbies have been seen less. Butterflies too have struggled. The cool spring and cloudy summer, together with a mild winter, which can cause caterpillars to emerge then die of cold, have combined to bring many species’ numbers down. But some species are still on a general upward trend and the Marbled White is one of these benefitting from a warming climate. At a private site in Rayleigh in July this year they were prolific in the grassland. Long grass is so important to help insects and other wildlife too, including small mammals and reptiles. I like to see parks, such as Swayne Park at Rayleigh and Queens Park in Billericay, managed in a way that balances mown grass for access and recreation with areas of rough grass which add that possibility of a butterfly sighting to the walk. In Basildon Borough, there are roadside verges where grass is cut rotationally every 2 years. The cuttings are removed to reduce nutrients in the soil and this benefits wildflowers as well as insects. Another beneficiary of long grass is the Wasp Spider, a recent arrival in our country and there was a lovely example at Rainham Marshes.

But the main reason for being at Rainham was for the third annual Hen Harrier day, where many of us gathered to voice our protest against the illegal persecution of these magnificent birds known as ‘skydancers’. The speakers included Chris Packham and RSPB chief Mike Clarke, who recalled, as a boy, watching wintering Hen Harriers along the Thames. They summer on moorlands but only 3 pairs managed to breed last year in England, when there should be around 300. Anything that affects grouse numbers is killed, not only predators but Mountain Hares too, as they carry a tick which can transfer to grouse. If you also object to this you can add your voice here: https://petition.parliament.uk/ petitions/125003. September is the time of comings and goings, as insects dwindle or hibernate and the birds that depend on them head south. Redwings start to arrive later in the month and sometimes at night you can hear their ‘seep’ calls as they pass overhead. A more audible herald of Autumn is the croaky ‘rruk’ of the Brent Geese returning to our atmospheric coastal marshes.

CAR INSURANCE This is a warning for everyone who pays for car insurance - check NOW if you can slash the cost. Do note, I haven’t said “If you’re at renewal”; it’s important to do this even if that’s many months away. Car insurance prices have exploded over the last year, up 20% according to the AA index, while the ‘Association of British Insurers’ says 10%. And both predict rises to continue this year. Yet by locking in on a cheap price now, that means those rises won’t affect you. Here’s a tweet I got from Iain: “Just saved £375 changing car insurance MID-POLICY thanks to @MartinSLewis- thank you, man.” For full help, see my cheap car insurance system at:www.moneysavingexpert.com/ carinsurance. Here’s the key need to knows. 1. Ensure you’re on TODAY’S cheapest deal, then if prices rise, you’re protected If the predictions are correct and prices keep moving up, today’s prices will soon look cheap. Plus, many are overpaying already, especially those who just auto-renewed. Here’s what to do: - AT RENEWAL? Then it’s easy, just move to the next point. - RENEWAL WITHIN 60 DAYS? Some firms such aswww.aviva.co.uk ,www.Nationwide. co.uk andwww.LV.com give quotes valid for 60 days so get one now, then check against quotes at renewal time. As @dimuthuj7 tweeted: “@MartinSLewis. Renewal £521. Quote a month ago, which was honored, of £319. Thanks.” - MIDWAY THROUGH A POLICY? Follow the steps below to see if you can save a chunk by switching. If so, provided you’ve not claimed, for a £50ish admin fee (factor that in) you can usually cancel and get the rest of the year refunded. You won’t earn the year’s no-claims bonus, but if it means you save now and prevent
future price rises it can be a big winner. 2. Don’t just use one comparison site, combine them. There’s no one cheapest insurer, as prices are set individually. So the aim is to check as many quotes as possible, quickly and easily. Comparison sites do that, yet they don’t all cover the same insurers or even give the same price for the same insurer, so use more than one.My current order’swww. Confused.com,www.Gocompare.com and www.MoneySupermarket.com. If you can, use all three. 3. Then check the biggies comparison sites miss. www.DirectLine.com,www.Aviva.co.uk and www.Zurich.co.uk won’t appear on comparison sites, but can be competitive especially if you’ve no convictions and a clean licence. As @damianderby tweeted me: “Did your car insurance checklist and saved £100 (1/3) off my renewal. It was Aviva. Pays to go past the comparison sites.” 4. Hidden hot deals comparison sites miss... There are also special promo deals around, some of which aren’t listed on comparison sites. These often mean you get, say, £60 Amazon voucher or free gifts with policies. There’s a daily updated list of the hottest at www.moneysavingexpert.com/carinsurance. If you’re a member of cashback websites, you may also be able to get money back on the policy you’ve chosen.
ADDING MY HUSBAND I GOT IT DOWN TO £298. 5. Check multi-car policies if you’ve more than one car in the home A few insurers offer special discounts if you have more than one car. It’s always worth
trial and error to compare these against standalone deals. Sadly, comparison sites’ tech doesn’t allow this, so you need to do it manually. www.Admiral.com Multicar gives discounts of up to 25% depending on how many cars you insure. You can also get discounts by linking the household standalone policies with www.Churchill.com, www.DirectLine.co.uk and www.Privilege.co.uk. 6. Check if comprehensive is cheaper than third party I know this doesn’t make sense. Yet merely selecting comprehensive means some insurers see you as a lower risk, and it lowers the price. So if you want the cheapest cover, check if comprehensive’s cheaper. 7. Adding extra drivers can cut your cost Yes, covering more people can be cheaper. This is because if they’re a lower risk profile, it can bring down the average risk. It’s especially strong if you’re a young driver adding a responsible older driver, yet everyone should try, as forumiteBouncybubbles told us: “Quoted £900 from £500 previous year. By comparing then adding my husband I got it down to £298.” 8. Legitimately tweak your job title You can’t claim to be the boss of Barclays if you’re a ‘butler in the buff’ (or vice-versa) but many people have wide ranging roles. Yet I once did a TV makeover for someone who saved £50ish by calling himself “bar staff”, not “bar steward”. Fabsternation tweeted: “Changed from creative director to marketing manager - saved £300.”
martin L E W IS Money Saving Expert
9. ‘Paying monthly’ doesn’t exist - instead it’s a 107% APR loan Insurers may call it paying monthly, but actually they loan you the year’s cost and charge often hideous interest, sometimes above 100% APR. So pay upfront if you can and, if not, try to get one of the many year-long-plus 0% credit cards (seewww. moneysaving expert.com/0%cards). Just ensure you pay it off over the year, then there’s no cost. 10. Don’t want to switch insurer? Haggle, haggle, haggle This works best at renewal. Simply find the best price you can at speed and then ask your existing provider to beat or match it. Often it will. Eddy emailed: “My car insurance renewal offer arrived, a shocking £345. A quick phone call achieved a reduction to £143 - not bad.” And don’t be surprised if your existing insurer offers a far cheaper price as a new customer via comparisons than its renewal quote. Revd Canon Mike Lodge
For whom the bell tolls… For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1940, and tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades and attached to an antifascist republican guerrilla unit in the mountains of Spainduring the Spanish Civil War. Regarded as one of Hemingway’s best works the novel tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal. Over the last month during the Rio Olympic Gameswe have seen many examples of loyalty and courage, notwithstanding examples of loving devotion and defeat,or loss, but certainly not the death or loss of an ideal. The goal of the Olympic Movement is ‘To contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport, practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.’And the first half of September (7th – 18th September) we are able to enjoy the Rio Paralympic Games. The word “Paralympic” derives from the Greek preposition “para” (beside or alongside) and the word “Olympic”. Its meaning is that Paralympics are the parallel Games to the Olympics and illustrates how the two movements exist side-byside.The vision of the International Paralympic Committee is ‘To enable Para athletes to achieve sporting excellence and inspire and excite the world.’ The ideals of the Olympic and Paralympic Games help us to understand the importance of the
ideals or values that each of us can, and perhaps should, aspire to in our lives and endeavours in life. And as a model of this the Churches and Christian organisations in Rayleigh seek to communicate the values of the Christian faith and the positive place of this faith and ideals in society today. The Christian life is about a personal relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ and, in common with other Christians, seeking to deepen that relationship and to follow the way that Jesus taught. Similar to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Jesus brings a message of peace with a real sense of unity and justice where there is division and discrimination. But more than this; for us all to ask ourselves whose values we live by and in response to seek to achieve excellence in all that we do, to encourage and motivate those around us to build a better world in which to live… We are reminded of the Church’s presence in Rayleigh when the eight bells of Holy Trinity Church ring out every Sunday, signifying that hundreds of people from across the Town and further afield are gathering to worship a God of love, compassion, forgiveness and hope for the world. The bells are especially significant at the end of this month, on the 29th of September, whenMichaelmas Day is celebrated, remembering St Michael the Archangel, the patron saint of the sea and maritime lands, of ships and boatmen, of horses and horsemen. Michaelmas also used to be a popular day for the winter night curfew to begin - the first hint that winter was on the way!The curfew took the form of a tolling of the church bell, usually one strike for each of the days of the month that had passed in the current year and generally rung at 9.00pm. The bell was tolled every night, apart from Sunday, until Shrove Tuesday.Chertsey is one of the last places to still ring a Curfew bell at 8.00pm from Michaelmas Day to Lady Day, on 25th March. For whom the bell tolls – it tolls for each of us, as a reminder of how we might build an ideal world… Yours in the love of Jesus,

ROTARY CLUB OF RAYLEIGH MILL For most weeks in the year, we meet on Mondays as a club, with our members enjoying a meal at The Rayleigh Club near Hullbridge, Essex. It is followed by a particular kind of meeting such as ‘committee’, ‘business’ and ‘speaker’ - the latter gives us an opportunity to invite a well-known personality or charity organisation to keep us informed about their work or life. We have a members’ raffle at the end of the evening and our Sergeant-At-Arms is an appointed member of the club who manages to extract small amounts of money from us in friendly fun from personal observations of us which goes to our charity box. The evening is run by our President who sits at the top table with his Secretary and we welcome our visiting guests too. Toasts are made to the Queen and our Rotary organisation. We have a Treasurer to manage our accounts and appointed officers to involve us in the more gentle sports, a press officer to publicise our events, an IT specialist to handle our information, a webmaster to run this website and particular members who take on responsibility for an event eg. our Charity Golf Day and our social trips and dinner dances. Our Foundation officer looks to promote the work of Rotary eg. Purple Pinkie support to End Polio Campaign.
