A VIEW FROM THE CHURCH
A month of Sundays and other days!! The month of June is a particularly busy one with much going on, both in the life of the church and also the community and beyond… The seventh Sunday after Easter is often referred to as White Sunday, in commemoration of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles 50 days after Easter. The word ‘Whit’ derives from the Old English hwīta sunnandæg white Sunday, probably named after the ancient custom of wearing white robes at or after baptism. Also called Pentecost, on Sunday 8 June the churches will be celebrating this ‘feast day’, as it often referred as the ‘Birthday of the Christian Church’. As the churches celebrate Pentecost, it’s not an occasion to blow out the candles on the cake, but to allow the Holy Spirit to stir up the church and to fan the flame of hope that all Christians are called to live and share; the living hope of a new start with Jesus, which leads to eternal life. For our lives to really come to life, we are expected to believe; that is, come to an understanding that Jesus died for each one of us, as individuals, that he
rose from the dead, giving us the hope of eternal life. I hesitate to mention that Thursday 12 June marks the beginning of the Football World Cup 2014, but, giving some hope for those who don’t delight in football, it ends on Sunday 13 July! Taking place in Brazil, with Brazil favourites to win, it has the theme of ‘All in One Rhythm’ with England’s first match, against Italy taking place on Saturday 14 June at the Arena Amazonia, Manaus! Over this weekend the Parish of Rayleigh will be having its own special events as the centenary of the Diocese of Chelmsford is celebrated. On Saturday 14 June you can join in the fun from 10.00am with THE BIG PAINT! Come and add your touch to possibly the biggest ever paint project in Rayleigh EVER!!
Mothering Sunday, when cards and gifts are presented! On the same day ‘Rayleigh in Bloom’ is upon us again with the judging taking place, Holy Trinity Churchyard entered for the Best Religious Grounds, an award which it won last year! And the list of other days goes on, with ‘The Derby’, horse racing event taking place on 7 June on Epson Downs, the State Occasion of the ‘Trooping the Colour’ on 14 June in at Horse Guards Parade, Royal Ascot from 17 June and Wimbledon Tennis Championships from 23 June…. Whatever you are planning to do this month I do hope your days are joyful ones… Yours in the love of Jesus…
Sunday 15 June is a day honouring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society, which is celebrated across the world, usually on the third Sunday in June. Father’s Day originated in the United States in the early 20th century to complement

R AYLEI G H ROTARY CLUB June 28th is around the corner and our ‘Concert in the Park’ is nearly here! I hope that you have seen the banners around town advertising the event, if not go on to www.concertinthepark.org.uk to find out all the details and how to obtain tickets. Although this is our 17th concert, it never seems to be any easier to organise. In fact continual changes to Heath and Safety etc. make it more difficult. If you look into Priory Park on the two days before the concert you will see the club members, from all sorts of professions, setting up the site. Building fences, running water mains, building marquees, organising concessions etc. and then on the day they will all be looking very different as they steward the site in dinner jackets! The English Pops Orchestra, the Southend Boys’ and Girls’ choir, the Flashbax, the firework company and all the club will be working to make it a great occasion for you so we hope that thousands of you will come along with your picnics and flags to make it a great day. If any of you wish to see how the club works, the meetings are certainly interesting around ‘concert time’. We now meet at Mamma’s Romantica Restaurant in Rayleigh High Street at 7.30pm on Monday nights. If you wish to join us please contact Andrew Shackleton on 01702 201783 or robertashackleton@googlemail.com to make arrangements.
RAYLEIGH LIONS CLUB The Lions club of Rayleigh are pleased to announce our Newest member to the Club, Ian Curtis who was inducted at our last business meeting. We are still looking for new members to join our “family” whom are welcome to our business meetings which are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at The Ceders Centre, Castle Lane, Rayleigh at 8pm. We were busy again in May, with collecting the proceeds of the Easter egg raffle, which a number of establishments held on our behalf, and we raised a grand sum of £504. Many thanks to all that participated. In terms of donations, we are pleased to donate a further £1,000 to the first responders in order that they may purchase another defibrillator and ancillary equipment. In total this means a grand sum of £2,000, so both the East and West side of Rayleigh will have access. The first responders - a voluntary group that are trained by the NHS and works alongside the NHS, but have to provide all their own equipment to provide this valuable service. Did you know that Friends of Lions have their own charity shop in Hockley, all donations are welcome. For further information on our group please follow us and like us on our facebook page “the lions club of rayleigh”

‘FAIRVIEW UNDER FIVES’ REOPEN AT EDWARD FRANCIS PRIMARY SCHOOL I recently had the pleasure of attending a party to celebrate the re-opening of the Fairview Under Fives preschool, which was held at their new premises within Edward Francis Primary School (following their recent move from Fairview Park). The party was well attended by staff of both Edward Francis Primary School and the preschool, as well as by the Chairman of Rayleigh Town Council, Councillor Ian Ward, and several local councillors, including County Councillor Malcolm Maddocks, Councillor June Lumley and Councillor Dave Sperring – all
By Mark Francois MP of whom were instrumental in helping to assist the move. It is hoped that the relocation will afford the preschool more space and the exclusive use of an area within the well known school. The new location could also have the benefit of allowing extended opening hours – if the demand is there. At the event I was able to express my thanks to the
school’s Governors and Headteacher, Mr Gary Soars, for their help in supporting the move and also to the local councillors for their encouragement in overcoming a number of bureaucratic obstacles to the preschool’s relocation plans. The staff have all put a lot of hard work into the new premises and it certainly shows. I wish the Fairview Under Fives all the best of luck in their new home. You can put the onions in raw to save time but you won’t get that savoury caramel flavour. If you have a food processor or other gadget to slice the potatoes and onions to the same thickness all the better, otherwise slice them as fine as you can with your sharpest knife. The quality of the stock really makes this dish, so use the best you can.
Ingredients: 2 baking potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1 onion, thinly sliced Olive oil 10g butter Salt and pepper 1 teaspoon dried sage or small handful chopped fresh sage Enough chicken or vegetable stock to cover (about 500ml)
Method: 1.
Pre-heat your oven to 180°C. Add the sliced onion to a baking tray with high sides and barely cover with oil. Bake for 20 minutes until starting to soften. Strain off the onions and put to one side (you can keep the oil for cooking again, it’ll give it a subtle onion flavour).
2.
In the same baking dish, place a layer of potatoes and season generously with salt and pepper. Add a layer of onion. Top with sage then repeat potatoes, seasoning and onion until you’ve used everything up. When full, gently pour over stock – just enough to cover. Cover with greasproof paper or tin foil and put in the oven.
3.
After half an hour, the stock should have thickened slightly and reduced a bit. Discard the paper / foil. Dot the exposed potato slices with butter and put back in the oven for another 25 minutes or so, until you can put a knife straight into it with no resistance.
4.
Leave to stand for 10 minutes before serving - the stock soaks back into the potatoes and makes it extra sticky.

FAMILY CLASS MEANS CHILDREN/ADULTS TRAIN IN SAME CLASS, IDEAL FOR FAMILIES BUT CAN JUST BE CHILDREN OR ADULTS ON THEIR OWN! Have you heard a cuckoo yet this year? 20 years ago many more of you would have said ‘yes’, because there were many more cuckoos around. They could be heard throughout Essex and were common along the coastal farmland and in river valleys. Locally, this year, I have heard just one. So what is causing the decline in our cuckoos? Their favourite food, moth caterpillars, have declined so that is one possible reason. Cuckoos are parasites: they lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and leave them with all the stress of feeding their young. Some of these host species are in decline, or nesting earlier before the cuckoos return, so that may be a factor. But we have also found that fewer cuckoos are making it back from the long return journey to Africa, a journey that we know very little about. When a species declines, we need to gather evidence as to why, so we can take corrective action. In 2011, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) started tagging cuckoos with radio transmitters so they could find learn about cuckoo migration routes. The results are on the BTO web site: search on “BTO cuckoo tagging” and you can see the story of 22 cuckoos ‘missing in action’. In June, even without Cuckoos, there is much to enjoy in the countryside. It’s the best time for wildflowers, in meadows which are unimproved i.e. not sprayed with fertiliser, weedkiller or pesticide, and usually managed by grazing. A local example is Little Haven. Woodlands have wildflowers too – if you are not good at identifying these you would benefit from a guided walk from Belfairs Woodland Centre (this year on 12th June). One of the important woodland plants around Belfairs is the common cow-wheat, which the rare heath fritillary butterfly needs for food. In June, the summer butterflies gradually build up and in good years we see a proliferation of meadow browns, gatekeepers and ringlets. One butterfly that has recovered in recent years is the small tortoiseshell. A wildlife farming expert tells me that this recovery may be to do with the grass field margins on some farms. These margins are part of agri-environment schemes where money is paid to farmers to encourage wildlife-friendly farming. There is much farmland to the north of here, beyond the wooded ridges of Hockley, and where the land drops into the Crouch valley. A walk along the sea wall to the east takes you to Wallasea, a farm where the wildlife is growing year on year as this is being restored to marshland and lagoons. Already there are water voles and special farmland birds, including the corn bunting. The RSPB are creating this wetland for the future, as they believe that climate change will bring more wetland birds from the south of Europe to our coasts. In this area, the local wildlife may look very different to future generations.

Traditional Market Charm with a Unique Twist on Offer at The Lanes
Situated in the heart of Rayleigh town centre is The Lanes, a vibrant indoor shopping hall. The market was originally opened in 1980 by a company called Essex Plan, but by 1994 had become run down and gone into receivership. The Charfleets Group, one of the leading market operators in the UK, established for 25 years and with flagship markets at Dagenham and Pitsea, took over The Lanes in 1994. Since then, they have breathed new life into The Lanes, encouraging traders that can not only provide residents with all their everyday essentials, but also more unique offerings, such as haberdashery goods, and a company specialising in silk flowers for weddings and occasions. Frank Nash, who works at Charfleets and was involved in the takeover of The Lanes, said ‘We took over the Lanes that same year (1994) and got to work finding new traders for the vacancies and making subtle alterations. Since early ’95 The Lanes has remained full’.
26
The market is open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to 5.00pm, and is situated in the middle of the High Street, with Rayleigh’s largest car park, at Websters Way, immediately to its rear entrance. Since its renovation, The Lanes has retained its original market charm, with a traditional butcher and fishmongers, a friendly café, and a children’s toy stall selling jigsaws, toys and sweets. Other traders include a hairdressing salon, a bookshop, a DVD stall, and shoe and watch repair
services. Frank Nash said, ‘We’ve purposely kept that handmade old fashioned look because in a sterile shopping world where most retailers don’t talk to you, the shoppers love it’. As for change to The Lanes in the future, it is evident from the market’s hustle and bustle that residents and visitors like it just the way it is. Frank said ‘We want to keep things exactly as they are. Why change a winning formula?’
