‘Back to School!’ is the cry for September, by relieved parents and excitable kids, heading out on a new adventure. Whether it be a new class or new School, let’s hope they settle in well. Congratulations to everyone who received GCSE and A-level results over the past month too - we hope you all got the grades you wanted and accepted into the Sixth forms, Colleges and Universities you applied for! Education doesn’t have to stop there though – Around Town’s Jo Cook investigates available opportunities for Adult Community Courses in Essex (P.11) proving it’s never too late to learn something new or refresh what you already know. So dust off those pads and pens and take a seat – class is about to begin.

Going Back to School this September It’s that time of year again, when the parents out there amongst you are rushing around preparing your little’uns for the start of the new school year. This includes, but is not limited to, spending hours online finding a uniform that your child/ children won’t grow out of by December, and spending a small fortune in a crowded stationery store on the latest must-have accessory (in my days, a pencil case, in 2014, probably Apple’s latest offering). While children across Essex anxiously/ excitedly await the start of a new school year, and their parents breathe a sigh of relief, those yet to experience parenthood note the change with little more than a curse that rush hour traffic is about to increase. But how about looking at things differently this year? As someone who, selfconfessedly, always enjoyed academic pursuit, and to this day still gets a kick out of learning something new (albeit the latest Buzzfeed ‘17 things’ list), this September I’ll be looking

at the Adult Community Learning (ACL) courses available from Essex County Council in the local area. Whether you are looking to improve your literacy skills, gain key examinations/ professional qualifications, or like me are simply looking for a new challenge, ACL in Essex offers a wide range of courses suitable for new and/ or returning learners. Course guides and full listings can be found at www.essex.gov. uk/Education-Schools/AdultLearning with details of term times and local centres in the Essex area. The autumn term for the South and West Essex areas begins on 1 September and run until 19 December, with centres in Broadmayne and Felmores End, Basildon, 132/4 High Street, Rayleigh and Bishops Hill, Brentwood. Essex County Council tailor the courses available throughout the year according to demand, following feedback from learners, and pride themselves on delivering excellent courses led by experienced tutors, with 95% of learners being satisfied with the quality of teaching

(2012/2013, source: ACL Course Directory South Essex). Information and Enrolment Sessions are also run at each ACL centre at the beginning of the new term, with autumn’s events being held on 3rd and 4th September. As well as offering opportunities to learn a trade and gain English / Maths GCSEs, courses available range from the creative, such as jewellery making and floristry, to the practical, like First Aid and IT for beginners, and the downright bizarre, like microwave cooking… And as for me? I’ll be looking to learn a European language. I just need to decide which. Perhaps I’ll check Buzzfeed for the latest ‘17 useful languages’ list… By Around Town Journalist Jo Cook

he had, or at least thought he had! In his mind he had two existing Personal Pension plans, one of which he was paying into, and the other was an older scheme from when he started work. He told me that these were going to give him “a really good Pension”. As the summer draws to a close we can all put away our sun cream and costumes and go back to the more mundane world of looking after our Financial Future!

When we delved into it we found that the older scheme only had a fund value of just over £12,000, and that the newer scheme (which he was paying £40 per month into) only had a slightly higher fund value of £16,000.

This month I’d like to remind you of the need to constantly review your savings and pension arrangements.

As he was in his early 40’s if he had kept going like this he would have ended up with a pretty small Pension.

I meet so many clients who tell me that they are “all sorted thank you” or that “I’m saving plenty in a really good scheme” when in reality although they may have set something up many years ago, the fact that they haven’t reviewed what they have done regularly means that whatever they do have in place is probably woefully out of date. I met with a new client recently who I’d been introduced to by his brother, a long standing client. He was recently self-employed and wanted to review his pension arrangements. When I first met him I did what I always do and carried out a full review of what

In addition, although we discovered his Attitude to Investment risk was quite adventurous, he was in fact invested almost exclusively in fixed interest funds, which are for the very cautious investor. He was quite surprised, if not shocked by what we found, and was worried that he’d left it too late. Now although ideally we could have caught this sooner, he did have 20 odd years left do something about it. After explaining his various options, we agreed to transfer his two Pension plans into a new, lower charging scheme based on an Investment platform. We invested the money in funds relative to his attitude to risk, and increased his

monthly contribution to a more realistic £300 per month. More importantly we agreed to review his Pension arrangements every six months, something I’d recommend you all do! If this has made you wonder if your Pension and Investment plans are doing what they should and would like a review please as always get in touch on the numbers below. Have a good month and see you next time. Consolidating your pensions could make financial sense It’s essential that you regularly review all your retirement plans, to make sure you know what you’ll get when you retire. If you don’t, you could be: • Paying more charges than you need to. • Investing in funds that don’t suit your goals or attitude to risk. • Paying less than you need to fund your retirement, as it’s difficult to work out what you’ll get if your pensions are paid from several pots. It’s never too late to consolidate your pensions and be able to make better plans for your retirement. Call me now and talk to the experts about the best way forward for you. The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

Billericay CC (Shirts sponsored by Paul Robinson Solicitors) 2nd, 3rd and 4th XIs looking good 1stXI improves With only 4 league games left at the time of going to press the 2ndXI are top of their league and are 52 points ahead of 3rd place so look certain to secure successive promotions being undefeated since June 2012. The 3rd XI are second but face a tough run in and will have to be at their best to be promoted. The 4th XI are second with two of their remaining games against the top and third placed teams and will also have to be at their best to secure a promotion spot. But whilst these three teams have their destiny in their own hands, the 1stXI, despite a convincing 5 wickets win over second placed Orsett will have to rely on other results whilst putting in top performances themselves if promotion is to be gained.

Weather warm but wet June and July have been very warm and often dry, but when it has rained it has been heavy and as a result the water table is high and with the start of August being cooler and very wet means that the playing conditions will have an important role in deciding the outcome of the leagues. I am surrounded by large brown beasts and the sounds of munching. Something flutters and alights on top of one of the remaining flowers of Devils Bit Scabious and binoculars reveal the bright orange of a small copper. The Scabious have been abundant this year, as have the crimson Common Knapweed with which they mix. And the munching beasts, Red Poll cattle, part of a herd owned by Essex County Council, will contribute to future abundance of flowers. The cattle exist to help us manage nature reserves, and have been introduced to Mill Meadows this year for the first time.

Grazing for wildlife habitat is not as simple as it seems. In a wildflower meadow the cattle should be there briefly in the spring, to reduce the early growth, then taken away to allow the wildflowers to flourish, and returned in mid or late summer. Of course they need somewhere to go in the meantime which means some of the land has to be kept only for summer grazing. Before the animals are deployed in any field, fences have to be checked, the land has to be inspected for hazards and the grazier has to be sure that there is enough fodder for them. o ish t

The benefits of grazing are not just about keeping the grass short, it’s the manner of the method, the random reduction of grass as well as the trampling of hooves, which causes tussocks and tufts, leaving clumps and hiding holes for small burrowing creatures. And there is another great factor for wildlife. Dung. This provides feeding and breeding ground for the insects at the bottom of the food chain. In our local farms if you are to find Swallows nesting in the barns it is nearly always those with animals: cattle, sheep and most common in our area, horses. s to

Recently at an equestrian farm near Billericay, I saw many resident Swallows, juveniles as well as adults which were still feeding second or third broods. The Swallows were supplemented by a passing flock of twittering House Martins and, down below on the pastures, young yellow wagtails and goldfinches mixed with pied wagtails and house sparrows. Suddenly there were alarm calls from the swallows and martins which gathered into the relative safety of flying clusters. The wagtails and sparrows responded with their own calls and headed for cover under the hedges, Over nearby woods, one could discern the dark shape of a Hobby, with its scimitar wings. Hobbies are falcons, which prey on dragonflies and small birds, and the landowner described how he’d seen one chase a young Swallow between his stables, with incredible speed. The Hobby, Swallows, martins and Yellow Wagtails are migrants and will soon be on their way to warmer climes. As custodians of the land, we want to keep places for insects on which they depend, so they can return once again and adorn our farmland.

CANCER’S ‘MAGIC KEY’ It is a disgrace that the NHS first diagnoses a quarter of cancers as late as A&E. Thousands of lives annually could be saved if we matched international averages. The key reason for these failings is that we diagnose cancer far too late. Last month the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer (APPGC), of which I am Chairman, staged a Parliamentary reception to celebrate the recent publication of one-year cancer survival rates. These figures, broken down by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), allow us for the first time to measure the performance of our local NHS when it comes

cancer survival indicators at a local level.

By John Baron MP to earlier diagnosis – as late diagnosis makes for poor survival rates. The best way of improving one-year cancer survival is to encourage earlier diagnosis, since the chances of successful treatment are greatly magnified if caught in its early stages. Consequently the APPGC, together with the cancer community, successfully campaigned to persuade the NHS to introduce one-year

Compelling the NHS to focus on one-year survival will force it to do more to encourage earlier diagnosis. By putting the survival rates up in lights, CCGs will have to introduce or improve local initiatives, tailored to the needs of their populations, to detect cancer earlier. I am pleased to say the Basildon and Brentwood CCG’s performance over the last year was slightly above the national average – 70% of patients survive a year after diagnosis, against 68% nationally. Overdrafts are a debt like any other, if you don’t manage it, it will spiral out of control. While there are methods to cut the cost, they’re often far less talked about than the common techniques for cutting credit card bills – but are just as important. In a nutshell your aim should be to cut the cost and repay what you owe. Here’s my tips on how… Get paid £100 to take a free overdraft. There are two big players who offer decent deals for those with overdrafts who switch account. Though you’ll need to pass their credit score. Move to www.firstdirect.com, which is the no. 1 rated bank for customer service (92% of my web users rated it ‘great’) and you get an ongoing £250 overdraft. Crucially it also gives you £100 sign up bonus, which you should put straight towards your debt. To get it you’ll need to pay in your salary or income, which must be at least £1,000 a month. Shift your overdraft to a 31 month 0% card. While you may have heard of credit card debt shifting deals called balance transfers, a few cards also offer a ‘money transfer’ where it simply pays cash into your bank account, so you can then pay off your overdraft, meaning you then owe it instead. This is a good option if you’ve a bigger overdraft and will need more than a year to repay it. My top pick card right now is www.mbna.co.uk, which lets accepted customers do it at 0% for 31 months for a one-off 4% fee (it’s just 2.88% for normal balance transfers). However, it’s credit score dependent, so use the www.mse.me/eligibility tool which will show you which money transfer cards you’ve the best chance of getting. If you are doing a money transfer do follow these golden rules: a) Don’t assume all cards do this, most charge a fortune. b) Always repay the monthly minimum or you’ll lose the 0% deal. c) Plan to clear by the end of the 0% period or it jumps to the full rate - with

MBNA that’s 22.9% rep APR. d) If you’re unsure of what you’re doing use the step-by-step help in www.mse. me/moneytransfers.

income. Do ensure you can make monthly repayments to clear the card before the 0% ends though or the rate jumps to 34.9% representative APR.

Organise incoming cash and move it into bill pots at the start of the month so you’re not tempted to spend unnecessarily, it’s called piggybanking. Use this technique to make payments - eg, £100 a month - to your overdraft, treating it like any other bill. Use my free automated budget planner to help at www.budgetbrain.com.

“I got £1,560 in unfair bank charges back.” If you have an overdraft the nightmare scenario is exceeding your limits and getting stung with bank charges – these transaction fees can be £6 per day or up to £25 per transaction. Get it wrong and they can add up to £100s or £1,000s a year. Do everything you can to avoid them and communicate with the bank if there’s no solution. However, if you are or have been hit, do remember reports of the death of unfair bank charges reclaiming have been exaggerated. Admittedly now it’s mainly for those where charges put you into financial hardship, yet some do get money back, Alice emailed me to say: “I sent your template... a day later the bank refunded £1,560. Thanks.” For full help and template letters on how to reclaim bank charges for free see www.mse. me/bankcharges.

Use savings (if you’ve any). Having overdrafts and savings isn’t sensible. Think about it: a £1,000 overdraft at £20 a month equals £240 a year, but the same in easy access savings, after tax, earns a paltry £13 at best. So repay debt with savings and you’re £229 per £1,000 up each year. Once the overdraft’s paid off, you can save more freely. You may think: “But I’ll have no savings if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in.” True, but in an emergency, access the overdraft you’ve paid off again and you’ll be no worse off. To beat the fear of being without savings, read: www.mse.me/repaydebts. Poor credit? Get 0% respite from bank charges. The options above won’t help if your score’s poor, but there is one card that offers 0% on spending until October even for those with a poor credit history. The www. luma.co.uk card accepts some with CCJs or defaults over a year old to get it. Now as this isn’t a debt shifting card, you have to play clever and be disciplined to take advantage of it for reducing overdrafts. The technique is you do your normal, budgeted, dayto-day spending on the card up to the credit limit, instead of from your bank account. This builds up the debt on the card, but allows your overdraft to be repaid by your

In dire straits? If the debts are all too much for you, it’s worth considering non-profit debt help from agencies like www.stepchange.org, www. citizensadvice.org.uk, and www. nationaldebtline.org. Don’t be scared to speak them, they’re there to help not to judge.

Operation Christmas Child Some of you may be familiar with the excellent work of Operation Christmas Child (OCC) who send shoeboxes filled with small gifts to less fortunate children than our own across Europe. I was greatly encouraged, last year, by the way many of you supported our shoebox appeal at Emmanuel (and other churches in town) Billericay shoeboxes were delivered to Belarus. Many of you suggested that I should have mentioned it sooner last year - so here I am, a month earlier! Since 1990, over 100 million children and young people, worldwide, have been able to receive a Christmas gift that they would not have received because they live in extreme poverty or because they are orphaned or their parents are just too poor to buy them a Christmas present. A fantastic achievement from the simple idea of a friend of mine, Dave Cooke, a carpenter from Wrexham who was so deeply moved by the plight and images of children in the orphanages in Romania on TV in 1990 that he decided he had to do something about it. OCC is now the largest children’s charity in the world. Might I encourage you and your family and/or your place of work, club, organisation, business or school to join in with us this year and collect the

following items over the next several weeks? • Shoeboxes: We always seem to run out! (Please wrap these in colourful wrapping paper). • Toiletries: Toothbrushes, Toothpaste, Soap, Flannels, Combs, Brushes. • Sweets: Such as Haribo or Boiled Sweets but NOT chocolate! • Small Toys: Tennis Balls, Cards, Dominoes, Teddies! • Educational Equipment: Pens, Paper, Pencils, Colouring Books, Rubbers, Sharpeners. • Woollens: Hats, Scarves, Gloves. Your contribution, however small, would be greatly appreciated. You can bring your collected items along to Emmanuel on Friday 14 November from 7.30 pm onwards. You are also invited to join us for our ‘Shoebox Filling Extravaganza’ at Emmanuel from 10.00 am on Saturday 15 November and our special ‘Shoebox Service’ at 10.30 am on Sunday 16 November (completed shoeboxes can also be brought along on these two days). Each shoebox costs £3 to send - all donations welcome! Sending shoeboxes is a very practical way of showing God’s love to others. However, I think it’s worth remembering that shoeboxes have a twoway ministry.

I know how much pleasure people get from buying small gifts, knitting scarves and hats to etc., loom bracelets are sure to be the craze this year! Leaflets are available at Emmanuel and you can find out more about OCC at their website here www. operationchristmaschild.org.uk I have been fortunate to help lead shoebox distribution teams to Belarus, Crimea and the Ukraine and I have seen, at first hand, the joy a simple shoebox ‘filled with love’ can bring. I’d be happy to come and speak with you about my experiences, tell some stories and show some slides! With every blessing in Jesus’ precious name Web: www.emmanuel-church.info Email: paul@billericaychurches.org Tweet: @EmmanuelCM12

BILLERICAY LIONS CLUB

Hi Folks The new Lions year is now up and running with events being planned for the forthcoming months. We have previously mentioned the Senior Citizens Concert on September 20th at The Emmanuel Church, (don’t forget to book early!), and a further International Disabled Swimming event is planned for October with our sister clubs Voreifel from Germany and Bruxelles Royale. We have held this event bi-annually for the last 25 years in alternate venues and many lasting friendships have been forged between organisers and competitors alike. Other events planned are very much in the embryo stage but plans are afoot for the Christmas Market, the Christmas Sleigh and our extremely popular Taste of ....... night for spring next year. We are also planning a standard quiz night in November, and more details will follow next month. Of course, some of the club still haven’t returned from holiday yet, but we are conscious that our own social side doesn’t suffer and we have a walk and lunch planned in Hatfield Peverel on September 14th for the benefit of all our members and a chance to get to know our newer members and their partners. If you are still wondering what the Lions might offer you why not come to one or two of our meetings? There’s always a warm welcome from Club members – just contact us on the addresses below. For details of all Lions events please visit our website www.billericaylions.com or telephone 0845 833 9849.

The summer months have of course been filled with plenty of fun and laughs, and as well as helping out at numerous local fundraising events, our Round Table members have made sure that they have been able to enjoy some time coming together with family and friends with a variety of events – Chairmans Barbeque, Climbing at Thriftwood Scout Camp, Family Picnic and Nerf battle to name but a few. Behind the scenes we’ve also been very busy planning events for the months ahead! Fireworks night may seem like quite a way ahead, but planning for this event started straight after the last fireworks night had finished! Everything is coming together really well, with just a few smaller details to be organised still, and we think that this years event is going to be right up there with the best Fireworks nights we’ve put on over the years. This years event is set for 8th November, and if you’d like to find out more, please visit our website www. billericayfireworks.co.uk which will give you all the information you need. We’re including a smaller scale Kids firework display earlier in the evening this year, so there truly will be something for the whole family to enjoy! Most of you will know that the Round Table organisation is aimed at men between the ages of 18 and 45, but did you know that we have a sister organisation called Ladies Circle? At present, we are working with the Ladies Circle National Membership Secretary to try to get Ladies Circle up and running in Billericay, after all, why should us men have all the fun?!? If you are female, between the age of 18 and 45 and interested in finding out more, please email membership@ladiescircle.co.uk or call Emma on 07738 176515 to find out more. If you’d like to find out more about Billericay Round Table, either visit www.billericay.roundtable.co.uk or email us at info@billericayroundtable. co.uk we’d love to hear from you!
