Savings Roundup Has the Bank of England Base Rate increase been good for savers? Last month, we went to print just before the Bank of England met to decide whether to raise the base rate for only the second time in a decade. We had a hunch that they might not, although the market was pricing in a rise, given that we’d been in similar positions in previous months. We got that bit wrong, but we’ve (very sadly) been right in our predictions of what it means for savers. We said ‘the larger banks and building societies still have more savings deposits than they need and we think they are likely to pass on little or none of the benefit of any base rate increase to their savers, instead using it as an opportunity to improve their profits.’ We predicted that ‘savers hoping for a base rate increase to improve their returns are therefore likely to be disappointed’. Lloyds Bank has only increased rates on two accounts, Barclays has increased its Everyday Saver by just 0.05% and HSBC, Natwest and Santander have passed on only 0.10% to customers of their Flexible Saver, Instant Saver and Everyday Saver respectively. Even

backed
National Savings & Investments (NS&I) hasn’t been able to pass on the full increase. NS&I have announced that they will increase some rates from 1st October but these range from just 0.05% to 0.15%. Building societies, who are run for their members benefit, rather than to maximise profits, have been just as bad as the big banks. 29 out of 45 have still to announce any changes. Only 32 financial institutions have changed their savings rates and only three have passed on the full 0.25% rate – Beverley, Holmesdale and Swansea Building Societies.
new firms since our last column – and we believe there are now over 40 firms at some stage of the process. We have been asked a lot this year as to why we haven’t seen many of these come to market yet. The simple answer is that the average time to go from the initial meeting with the regulator to being authorised and live in the savings market is 27 months. We anticipate that 2019 and 2020 will see many of these prospective banks come to fruition with 2020 likely to be the high point before numbers drop back.
When will we see more new banks come to market?
That being said, we are expecting to see some activity this year with Orchard Funding Group announcing last month that it is hopeful of receiving its banking licence by the end of 2018. Marcus, a new arm of Goldman Sachs, which is already live in the US with savings accounts has announced it is open in the UK to employees and expects to be live nationwide in the coming months. With an initial interest rate on its savings account of 1.50%, it is likely to be very popular if that is the rate it launches with given the best buy is currently 1.36% from Virgin Money.
The list of prospective new banks seems to grow by the day - we’ve heard from another two
Zopa, the peer to peer lender has announced it has secured £44m to fund its expansion in to
At the top of our best buy tables, we have seen a host of new names takeover top spots in the past month with only one category (5 Year) remaining unchanged since the start of August. While the providers have changed, the rates haven’t moved significantly. The best increase has been 0.09% on notice accounts with 0.06% (2 Year) and 0.05% rises on 3 Year and instant savings. Otherwise, our tables are largely unchanged.
banking and is now almost two years on from its original announcement that it was seeking to gain authorisation. Civilised Bank, who had to surrender their licence in April this year, have hired a wave of new bankers, including former Harrods Bank CEO, Mark Stephens, for what looks like another assault on the market. While we don’t expect every prospective bank will come to fruition, we believe that a significant proportion of those firms looking at a banking licence will make it to market. What are the best rates currently? The market can move quickly, so we always recommend that you check our website for the latest rates. RECIPE Raspberry Jam
Ingredients: 1kg fresh raspberries Juice of 1 lemon 1kg jam sugar
Method: 1. Make sure you have saved up enough jars to fill with your jam and sterilize these before you start. 2. Put a small plate in the freezer to chill. 3. Place half of the raspberries into a preserving pan and add the lemon juice. 4. Mash the berries down using a potato masher and then leave to cook gently for about 5 minutes. 5. Using a sieve, drain the juice off the berries and firmly work the pulp through the sieve with a wooden spoon until you are left with just the seeds. 6. Tip the juice and the pulp back into the preserving pan and stir in the sugar.
7. Bring it to the boil and allow to bubble for 5 minutes. 8. Remove the mixture from the heat and pop a little of the jam onto the plate from the freezer. 9. Push your finger into it – it should wrinkle and look like jam. If it doesn’t then you need to boil it for a further couple of minutes and test again (don’t forget to put the plate back in the freezer). 10. As the mixture is cooling, give it a little stir. 11. Pour into the jars and seal. 12. The jam will keep unopened for one year and make sure you store in the fridge once opened.

Pension Pot Fraudsters on the Prowl To enjoy a good retirement with a decent pension is something many of us look forward to and save up for over our entire working life. Unfortunately, it is also something fraudsters and scammers look forward to as they aim to capitalise on the fruits of your labour by lining their own pockets with your life savings. Since April 2015 when pension freedoms were introduced, this type of fraud has increased significantly, particularly with the over 55s. Recent information released by Action Fraud shows that, in 2017, there were 253 reports of pension fraud where the victims lost more than £23m between them, an average of £91,000 each! While this is bad enough, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) suggest that the real figure is likely to be very much higher as most cases are never reported.
The scam starts with an unexpected call, text, social media approach, email or even a cold caller at your door offering a free pension review. The fraudster comes across as very charming, convincing and knowledgeable offering investment opportunities for little known schemes which give a high rate of return. Not only that, but the schemes are backed up by guaranteed minimum returns and easy option termination plans with no penalty for exiting. Of course, to make the offer even more attractive, the fee for arranging the investment scheme is very minimal or even free - because the bigger prize is your pension pot. Once the funding is secured, your money disappears over the horizon with little hope of recovery. Some tips to avoid pension scams include: o Ignore unexpected pension reviews offers whether made online, on social media or over the phone o Use the FCA Register at https://register.fca. org.uk/ or call the FCA contact centre on 0800 111 6768 to see if the firm you are dealing with is authorised by the FCA o If it’s too good to be true, it is! Havering Talking Nonsense? In Scottish terminology, to talk nonsense is to Haver, so when someone is talking nonsense they are ‘Havering’. For those who know the lyrics of ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 miles)’ by the Proclaimers, you will know the line ‘And if I haver, I’m gonna be the man who’s havering to you’. Having spent many hours in the Council Chamber, there have been plenty of examples of people talking Havering!

However, we are particularly keen to secure funding to ensure Upminster Station has step-free access from platform to train for those who struggle with their mobility or use pushchairs and wheelchairs. Upminster serves approximately 1,196,801 people with disabilities each year and despite the station itself being step free, getting from the platform to the train is not step free, causing issues for many disabled passengers.
Julia Lopez
Member of Parliament For Hornchurch and Upminster Over the summer my team and I handed out passenger surveys to residents who use Upminster station as the start of a campaign to improve facilities there. Next month departure boards for District line services will be introduced. We are also engaging with Network Rail to avoid clashes in engineering works to minimise disruption to weekend services.
Over the summer, the government announced an additional £300 million to extend its Access for All programme that installs step-free routes across the transport network. My team and I are now working with disability charity, Leonard Cheshire, to nominate Upminster for a share of that cash. Leonard Cheshire believes accessible train journeys can make the difference between getting out to work and seeing family and friends instead of feeling excluded from community life. We shall be putting together a petition that we can present as part of our funding application and hope to obtain your support in the coming weeks.
I am also delighted to announce that we shall soon be opening a new Upminster office after my team and I secured new constituency premises for our parliamentary work. Once our new letter box, security and IT are fully installed, we will publish our new address but will be renting the Coach House within the grounds of Upminster Court, which residents may remember as the former Havering council offices that now house the Supply Chain Academy. We hope to provide constituents with a neutral space to meet the team on casework enquiries, network with other community groups and book surgery appointments. Our rotating surgery system, which moves to venues across the constituency, will continue. As ever, if you have a problem you think my team and I can help you with, please drop us a line! Or if you would like to come and have a look around parliament, we can book you in for a complimentary tour. Julia.Lopez.MP@parliament.uk 0207 219 2631 www.julialopez.co.uk Twitter: @julialopezmp
