PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Long Time No See! To herald the return of the in-person art fairs and stellar openings, Art Circuits is dedicating this issue to all the art in public places that has flourished in Miami, Miami Beach and Broward County, while cultural tourists were not able to visit. We believe that Art in Public Places boosts your mood, (Come to Miami Beach, page 16). This past year of enjoying being safe outdoors, nature sang and confident “urban” animals took over more space. Artists were artists, working in their studios, creating their best, while our city governments commissioned art projects. Works that stay, affording the possibility for long-term looking, for happy family car rides, learning from a young age to notice art and nature. An emotional rescue, very “instagrammmable” too.

Additionally, Carol Damian also highlights on page xx other powerful motivation to visit Metropolitan Miami that makes it Unique (page 10). Beyond the art fairs’ week and since before the XXI century “a select group of South Florida collectors have graciously shared their art in newly designed buildings and renovated warehouses, often in unfamiliar neighborhoods not known for cultural events”. Fascinating to note how Rubell Family Collection (now Rubell Museum) and Margulies Collection at the Warehouse opened in 1995 and 1999 respectively in Wynwood, very “unfamiliar” at that time.

Art historian Carol Damian writes about how to drive over the causeways between Miami and Miami Beach will surprise visitors because the cruise line invested the dark and quiet days of pandemic shutdown building well designed terminals along the Port of Miami, while the Miami Dade County Art in Public Places commissioned its art (Art on the Way, page 20).

We are ready for the new unusual 2021 art season with outdoor-indoor options, with immersive, virtual, hybrid and even traditional art experiences. Art Circuits is Metropolitan Miami local art guide since 2003, a snapshot but with a lesson learned:

Unique to Miami:

PRIVATE MUSEUMS &SPECIAL COLLECTIONS By Carol Damian, Ph.D.

Miami has become renowned as By Carlo Damian one of the world’s most impressive (and fun) art destinations, especially during Art Week that celebrates Art Basel Miami Beach and a myriad of other fairs and events. There is also another unique element that compliments the fairs and the many museums in the city of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and surrounding areas: the private collection open to the public. Unlike many places that are home to remarkable collections that can only be visited by special arrangement, a select group of South Florida collectors have graciously shared their art in newly designed buildings and renovated warehouses, often in unfamiliar neighborhoods not known for cultural events. While most focus on Contemporary Art, the Maldonado Collection about Modern Art, especially Abstraction, and the Girls Club is about Women Artists. Almost all the collectors have been noted as among the top 200 collectors in the world by major publications. For Art Week, these 6 world-class collections will be open with new exhibitions and installations that will add another layer to the complex schedule of activities and traffic patterns! of Miami and the Beaches North to Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Art Circuits says mark your calendars and maps and find these not to be missed unique exhibition spaces: 10

the margulies collection at the WAREhOUSE

A good place to begin is the first warehouse retro fitted as an art venue, the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse (opened in 1999). Housing the collection of real estate mogul Martin Z. Margulies, this huge 50,000 square foot space always offers a variety of art exhibitions and installations featuring some of the most important artists in the world, including Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, George Segal, Will Ryman, among many others. A yearly reinstallation focuses on different parts of the collection and this year one of the featured exhibitions, ARTE POVERA / Postwar Italian Art, tells the story of Italian artists subverting traditional methods with never before seen works from the private collection and new acquisition. It is a first for Miami. The Margulies Collection is also renowned for photography that showcases the history of the medium. NEW VISION brings a selection of vintage photographs produced in the 1920s and 1930s, between World War I and World War II.

de la Cruz Collection

The private collection of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz has been a coveted invitation for many years, beginning in their stunning home on Key Biscayne. As the collection evolved and more space was needed, in 2009, the couple hired architect John Marquette to design their three-story space in the Miami Design District. The current exhibition: There Is Always One Direction is a re -contextualization of works within annual exhibitions that reflects their specificity within movements and practices, and their significance within the collection's history. "Looking towards the future, there is always one direction, challenging new forms and ideas." - Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, 2021

WITNESS: Afro Perspectives The Experimental Art Center’s Second Show Explores Issues of Systemic Oppression, Identity and More. The dedicated art space founded by leading philanthropist, entrepreneur, and contemporary art collector Jorge M. Pérez continues its current exhibit: WITNESS: Afro Perspectives from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection. Featuring over 100 works by African and African Diaspora artists, WITNESS will serve as a catalyst for much-needed dialogue around issues of racial equity, political oppression and other troubling events brought to light amidst these unprecedented times.

Rubell Museum

Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Finding Balance, 2015 Courtesy of Jorge M. Pérez Collection.

In 1993, the Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Art Foundation, now the Rubell Museum, opened with one of the most significant and far-ranging collections of contemporary art in the world, encompassing 7,200 works by more than 1,000 artists—and still growing. The collection is further distinguished by the diversity and geographic distribution of artists represented within it, and the depth of its holdings of seminal artists, introduced at the entrance by the work of Yayoi Kusama. Her mesmerizing, monumental Narcissus Garden, 1966 composed of 700 stainless steel spheres, flows 200 feet along the museum’s central hall, creating an everchanging river of reflection that beckons and visually teases visitors as they walk through and along it (page 2). The museum also features two of Kusama’s Infinity Rooms, her celebrated fully immersive works of kaleidoscopic effects. Other collection highlights include the work of Natalie Ball, Otis Kwame Quiacoe, Genesis Tramaine, and Kenney Yanko. Major works by Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, and Jean Michel Basquiat are among the contemporary masterpieces on view.

Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection

A poetics of the exact Beyond the historical movement, Minimal Art, this exhibition is an attempt to explore the manifestations of a typically modern expressive need that is still active in the work of many contemporary artists: how to achieve that order, that minimal gesture whose materialization is revealed capable of generating the maximum psychic effect on its viewers? Distinguishing a work of art from the other objects of the world, is the task of many contemporary artists who, like their modern predecessors, produce what we could call a calculated and precise aesthetic, a poetics of the exact.

For a break from Miami and the Beaches, take a drive north to the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the NSU Art Museum and stop at another private collection in Fort Lauderdale with a special focus on women artists.

Girls' Club at the Warehouse

You Might Believe You're There An exhibition from the collection of Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz explores the confluence of anxiety, confusion, wanderlust and loss born out of the recent years' global events and upheavals. Work by Ana Mendieta, Lisa Sanditz, Melanie Daniel, Tracey Baran, Maira Kalmna, Constantine Manos, Kristen Thiele, and others is on view. There is always art to see and experience in the Miami Metropolitan area and Art Miami Week is a celebration that brings an opportunity to go beyond the usual to the extraordinary as artists, museums, galleries, and private collections share the best of the best. 14

MIAMI BEACH

T

he city of miami beach art in public places program presents three new initiatives for art week miami beach 2021, including “art outside,” “no vacancy miami beach” and the newly installed legacy purchase program collection at the miami beach convention center. “Art Outside” is a free public art exhibit curated by The Bass Museum of Art. The program aims to give Miami Beach residents and visitors the opportunity to see and experience a selection of public art throughout the city. The works of art were specially chosen from The Bass and from the collections of the city’s Art in Public Places program, The Wolfsonian-FIU, Miami Beach Urban Studios-FIU and the W South Beach hotel. In its second year, “No Vacancy Miami Beach” will exhibit 10 site-specific public art works just in time for Art Week Miami Beach 2021 through a juried contemporary art competition. “No Vacancy Miami Beach” celebrates artists, provokes critical discourse, and invites the public to experience Miami Beach’s famed hotels as destination art spaces and temporary galleries. Finally, the City of Miami Beach is set to unveil its newly installed Legacy Purchase Program Collection in the East Lobby of the Miami Beach Convention Center. The Legacy Purchase Program is a collaboration with Art Basel Miami Beach to purchase works of art for the Art in Public Places collection from the Art Basel Miami Beach fair. The goal of the program is to strengthen the connection between the City of Miami Beach, residents, and Art Basel Miami Beach by allowing residents to be a part of the curatorial process of our public art collection. The Legacy Purchase Program Collection is housed within the Miami Beach Convention Center and includes Cobalt Blue Earring by Amoako Boafo, Ebony G. Patterson’s ...as the garden secretes a swarm of monarchs feast... and the newest addition, Somethin’ Close to Nothin’, by Sanford Biggers.

Art on the Way –

Art in Public Places Brings a New Vision to Miami-Dade he stunning drive over the causeways between Miami and Miami Beach surprises visitors, especially at night, with a line of cruise ports that are remarkable for their architecture and artwork. Created by internationally renowned artists and architects, the lighting installations visible from the road are especially noteworthy and visitors may not realize that the art along the causeways are commissions from Miami Dade Art in Public Places, recognized as one of the most important public art programs in the country. Since its inception in 1973, Miami-Dade Art in Public Places has commissioned works of public art that transform civic spaces, celebrate the diversity of our community, and capture the remarkable uniqueness of Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade Art in Public Places is one of the first programs in the nation to commission fully integrated, site-specific works of public art. Its track record of artistic successes has resulted from innovative, working partnerships of various design professionals, including artists, architects, landscape architects and engineers. Over the past forty-two years, the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places Trust has acquired or commissioned over 700 works of art and gained international recognition as a leader in its field. Artworks are installed countywide at diverse sites including Miami International Airport, Metrorail and Metromover stations, Port Miami, parks, fire stations, libraries, police stations, public housing developments, courthouses, and community health centers. World-class artists in the collection include Tomás Saraceno at Royal Caribbean Cruise Port, Michelle Oka-Doner at Miami International Airport, Carlos Betancourt at Zoo Miami, José Bedia at the Adrianne Arsht Center, Isamu Noguchi at Miami Bayfront Park, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen at Stephen P. Clark Government Center, among many. The latest projects include The Underline, Miami-Dade’s 10mile linear park that will be activated by artwork throughout different locations below Miami-Dade’s Metrorail and transform underutilized space into an urban trail and art destination. The latest cruise terminal B for NCL features works by Jorge Pardo, Claudia Comte, Mark Dion with Ron Holthuysen & Scientific Art Studio, Eduardo Arranz-Bravo, Reynier Ferrer, and Jorge Salas Mora. One of the most dramatic will be MSC Cruise Port designed by international firm Arquitectonica. 20
