Truly motivated, we redesigned our logo and launched a new website. Also connected through social media, promoted daily all the local artists and institutions who did something meaningful. We dreamed with this interactive annual guide and when it was safe to carefully go out, we embraced a new program of cultural joy and called it the art treks. In this 18 th anniversary edition we explored downtown Miami as an open air museum. We n this unusual 202 invited the Girls’ Club Team: celebrate. A Miami Art Season without international visitors, led me to start in-depth conversations with Master librarian Barbara Young about Miami art roots, who were we before the art market materialized in about 20-25 art fairs coming to town every year since December 2002, and how those strong seeds in constant evolution flourished into today’s institutions and projects. Barbara, together with her celebrated librarian partner Margarita Cano, established Miami Public Library System’s standing art collection and was instrumental in curating multitude exhibitions by local artists. For more than 40 years she has been passionately devoted to the development of the cultural life in Miami and one of the three magnificent Graces (watch the video on p. 10), This video is also a homage to the memory of our beloved friend Helen Kohen. uoyant artists and art institutions of Miami and Miami Beach are offering a range of innovative experiences for pandemic and weather-weary art lovers. Virtual exhibitions and programs have dominated the activities for several months. Miami’s internationally lauded family collections – The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, the Rubell Museum, and the de la Cruz Collection are opening with timed
and ticketed attendance, social distancing, and always masks. The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum at Florida International University, The Bass Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami Dade College Museum of Art and Design, and the Lowe Museum – the University of Miami, as well as the Museum of Graffiti are receiving visitors while implementing safety precautions.

Miami artists have often chosen to present their work out of doors and with our climate “outside” is the perfect venue. In the early 1970s, Purvis Young, inspired by the Wall of Respect in Chicago, covered the walls of Overtown’s Goodbread Alley with his paintings. Some forty years later Tony Goldman established the Wynwood
Walls as an outdoor museum of international street art. There are numerous public murals and three dimensional works throughout our community. Many have been commissioned by Miami-Dade Art in Public Places Trust. Check their website to navigate. miamidadepublicart.org

This year, Oolite Arts’ Ellie Awards gave a needed infusion of financial support and of hope to South Florida’s diverse artist community with grants going to many projects that focus on the environment, social issues, and outside projects. Like the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, Oolite Arts physical presence on Lincoln Road gives artists exhibition opportunities, studio space, financial recognition, and now a strong virtual presence.

While times are challenging with health and economic issues plus climate and water realities, the South Florida art community has come together with ideas and compassion. There is much to see and experience. Our art world is hanging in and staying afloat with wonderful flexibility, imagination, and empathy. We are getting through hard times together.

Art Trek Longing for air, sunlight and art, as soon as the museums and art galleries started opening, we felt an immense
JOY!
ART TREK DOWNTOWN BY ART CIRCUITS' TEAM
T
hat is why last September we started the art treks, with masks, following the rules, with dear friends, and with a happy heart. Art treks are better with friends, that’s why each Thursday artcircuits.com sends a newsletter full of art news that are potential itineraries. We try to make one weekly, usually with our peers from the art community that are art lovers and foodies just like me! Art is a party!
Downtown Miami was on my bucket list with the Library and all three recently opened museums: History Miami, MOAD – Museum of Art and Design, PAMM - Perez Art Museum. What I didn’t expect was to see the city empty, so many stores and restaurants closed. It was a very, very windy day, it seemed like ghost town, just like those empty images from every city in the world. My heart shrunk. But if you are like me and love visiting downtowns in every city you travel to, you have your favorites sites in each: a Googlelike map of “must visits”. Here in Miami I always look out at the

look down to Burle Marx’s sidewalks, make a quick stop at
the InterContinental hotel’s lobby to admire the solid 70-ton Henry Moore’s Spindle (the lobby was

This time I enjoyed the day with art circuits’ art director Miguel Manrique, great company, and as a finishing touch I took him to
charge batteries to Main Library, the source; it was a peaceful, nice change from the streets. We admired Ruscha’s strong work: Words Without Thoughts Never To Heaven Go (Hamlet, Shakespeare). I looked around
to find the word Joy in the sixty Ruscha’s lunettes for this story. I didn’t find Joy but Positive, Yes, Sure, Certain and If greeted me, and I loved it. After such an intense art trek we sat down for a tasteful plate of pasta at Fratelli Milano, one of our old pals from MAM’s era".
