Convergences / Divergences
Primitive Sources of the Modern, at the Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection (JCMAC). Curated by Ariel Jiménez. This year’s annual exhibition at the Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection (JCMAC) Convergences/Divergences. Primitive Sources of the Modern, curated by Venezuelan art historian Ariel Jimenez, showcases a group of extraordinary utilitarian pieces from the Ye’kwanas, an indigenous VenezuelanBrazilian community. Originally gathered by Venezuelan explorer and naturalist Charles Brewer-Carías, who has traveled extensively throughout the Amazonia region since the 1960s, these invaluable pieces will now be part of the JCMAC’s Western geometric abstract collection and will highlight the importance of diversity, ethnography and preservation of all material culture. Ye'kwana Basket, c. 1961 Alongside these objects, the JCMAC will exhibit important works from their abstract geometric collection, with the goal of stimulating conversation regarding these two diverse, yet not quite opposite creative universes. Many questions arise: How similar are the inventive processes between modern art and the primitive production of utilitarian objects that are geometrically decorated? What is the contribution of each to a corresponding symbolic trade? What connections does the viewing public make when we simultaneously exhibit these two diverse cultural realms in tandem? Are there formal elements that coincide? And if so, how do we relate the so-called “primitive” abstract works to those that are the product of a “modern” perspective? Curator Jiménez has put forth these and other queries in an effort to promote a visual dialogue between the Ye’kwana utilitarian objects, and some of the iconic abstract geometric works in the JCMAC collection. The curator’s approach is decidedly away from an attempt at establishing a historical connection between the modern and its origins, but to instead encourage a confrontation between the two, thereby prompting new dialogues, in search of possible semantics and convergences/ divergences. Between both creative worlds there are stimulating connections to be found, artistically speaking: those that can be woven between modernity –specifically, the geometric abstractionists, alongside with the indigenous pieces’ use of geometry. Hopefully, we will be able to detect similar forms of geometry present in both worlds, despite the cultural and historical differences. Such an interesting thematic thread might actually suggest Josef Albers, Homenage to the Square: the seminal definition of the pure Amber Setting, 1959 act of creation, and evoke possible relationships between modernity, the symbolic trade of objects, and the utilitarian nature of the indigenous pieces, be they works of art or artisanal pieces. - Amalia Caputo, Art historian / Writer. A Guide to the
MIAMI EXPERIENCE Miami is a territory where we might be white, black or in between, descendants of original people, born here or elsewhere, but we are all invited to leave behind the common stereotypes and the refusal of not-like-me to enjoy the marvels of great art.
We cannot forget the indigenous population, that’s why the article Convergences / Divergences written by artist and art historian Amalia Caputo (page 4) is so enlightening, because it reveals how a mainly focused on geometric abstraction private collection spots the creative and geometric work of weaved objects from the Ye’kwanas, an indigenous Venezuelan-Brazilian community. This will be the annual exhibition of Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection, one of the 6 private collections that open to the public, adding up to Miami’s must-visit for the art world. (page 32).
For our 16th anniversary and greeting you with a Cuban American flamingo in our cover (perhaps descendant of those brought from Cuba to adorn Hialeah Park in 1934) we asked two cultivated residents to share their views about Miami. For our dearest friend George Neary, Miami is a vault. He is the real expert in the whole Miami experience, debuting now with his own tour company. He wrote So You Think You Know Miami? (page 12) – a fun challenge to you, our readers, to try and see how many places have you visited.
Art Circuits is now “mostly digital” but we keep up the pleasure of printing this collectable and easy to carry fall guide that you have in your hands. This is intended for those who like you and me, like to take notes and touch while we read. For art emergencies our free app is a must, but to read and touch you will find in the fall guide interesting art galleries (page 20), original artists, 19 art fairs on 2018 (pages 28), plus 13 museums (page 30), all 6 private collections open to the public, and for the past 5 years we have had the utmost complete program of Art of Black, promoted by the Multicultural Tourism Department of GMC&VB. (starting on page 47).
To better enjoy the wide spectrum of tropical Miami, without clichés, we asked ourselves about what the black Caribbean aesthetic might look like in front of other Afro descendants and how we perceive in Miami a common thread with many diasporic artists at work. So we requested Haitian artist Adler Guerrier for this season’s guide from an African diasporic view, Miami and the Art of the African Diaspora (page 16).
This is what Art Circuits lives for since 2003.
With his guidance we can learn about how present the artists of these traditions are among our institutions and galleries and how concepts of blackness, class, success, and beauty manifest themselves in many different ways.

So you think you know
Miami? By George Neary
Miami world renowned for its weather/ beaches and as a new city has a long history. There are architectural gems, ancient buildings and colorful wonders found no where else. Tucked away in North Miami Beach is the oldest building in the northern hemisphere-The Ancient Spanish Monastery built in 1133 in Sacramenia near Segovia, Spain. Purchased by William Randolph Herst, who cut down an entire forest to create the boxes to contain the stones, and built an entire train system to carry the boxes to be transported eventually to Miami. This amazing architectural wonder is your chance to explore a bit of medieval Europe in Miami. Spanishmonastery. com/305-945-1461 Close to the end of highway US 1 is an amazing architectural wonder Called Coral Castle. It is listed on the US Register of Historic Places and took Latvian American Edward Leedskalnin 28 years to singlehandedly construct. Legends state he used reverse magnetism to move numerous stones weighing several tons. He was jilted at the alter before he left for America and focused all his life to creating this castle dedicated to his lost love. Here are three iconic Art Deco hotels that all were each so special in their day. The Senator and New Yorker were demolished and live on as architectural martyrs in the history of saving the rest of the Art Deco District. Miami and art of the African diaspora.
BY ADLER GUERRIER studio@adlerguerrier.com adlerguerrier.com/studio/
"
As an artist practicing in Miami, I am fortunate to be offered, somewhat regularly, works, exhibitions, practices, and discourses produced in the aesthetics and in the sociopolitical consciousness of the African diaspora. My views of this art scene have enlarged by such offerings. I hold as a resource, the processing of works seen, with particular formations and concerns, in relation to Miami and its history, and, also, to its curious geographical importance. My prime example is Kerry James Marshall: One True Thing, Meditations on Black Aesthetics, opened at Miami Art Museum, in February 2004. Marshall’s exhibition empowered us in our thinking of the practice of depicting black bodies, the role of fetishized objects, and the sustaining spaces resonant with radical or liberating traditions. I would also note many works, held in private and public collections or shown in exhibitions, function as tributaries to the stream of African diasporic consciousness; works by Edouard Duval-Carrié, Senga Nengudi, Tomás Esson, Maria Magdalena- Pons, Lorna Simpson, Wangechi Mutu, Stan Douglas, El Anatsui, Leslie Hewitt, Lynette Yiadom–Boakye, and Glenn Ligon. In lieu of listing of every artists that I can remember, I offer this guide for this season. " Bethany Collins, The Litany, a site-specific installation with a durational performance, to be presented, at Locust Projects, centers on language, texts, and reading to reveal the meaning in the structural framing of the diasporic life..
