ART IN PUBLIC PLACES City of Coral Gables

New work in the City’s downtown Sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. 7

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Turning 19 under Miami beautiful blue skies… Welcome to 2021 Miami Art Season! Art Circuits, bridging art with joy for 19 years, 71 printed editions and 179 digital newsletters. As the local art guide we affirm that art is everywhere, even in public places where you might have passed by without noticing art. We have been pointing to you the usual and unusual art depositories: museums, art galleries, art fairs, and artists’ studios.

O

n page 24, we are premiering Art Initiatives. We invite you to discover, among many others, the Vasari Project, a library collection dedicated to documenting, collecting and preserving Miami-Dade County's art history from 1945 to the present; to visit The Betsy, a hotel in South Beach where poets, musicians and artists (some as residents) make an evening in Ocean Drive an exquisite experience all year round; to enjoy the Coral Gables Art Cinema, a local art house, across the street from another jewel the fav neighborhood bookstore Books and Books. Places where you will experience excellence and joy, some in Broward County, because we are the Metropolitan Miami guide. Miami is special though. It is the home of five very important contemporary art collectors with open to the public private museums and that is a rare circumstance. Curator Dr. Carol Damian writes about it on page 12 “Unique to Miami: Private Museums & Special Collections” where she explains how since as far as 1993 “a select group of South Florida collectors have graciously shared their art in newly designed buildings and renovated warehouses, often in unfamiliar neighborhoods…”. Kicking off the 2021 season, art writer Claire Breukel brings “Miami Land” on page 18. She notes that “while the world quarantined, artists continued to make art, outdoor experiences became essential… as we reenter the Miami art fair megacosm, creativity within the city’s pocketed and context-rich neighborhoods has never been more varied nor rewarding. These multifarious public and semi-public art gems are worth the trip.” For the 8th year we present the Art of Black Program (pages 46 - 51), the amazing multicultural program organized by GMCVB Multicultural Tourism compiling excellent cultural events created by African descent artists and intellectuals. Art Circuits 2021 digital art critic Dr. Donette Francis, wrote “Miami is a city of juxtapositions and simultaneity: urban/rural, wetlands/beaches, northern US/Southern Jim Crow US.“ So dear art-fair-goer visitor, welcome to the immersive art experience of Miami, the crossroads or gateways to the Americas -the Caribbean and Latin America. by Liana Pérez lianaperez@artcircuits.com 8

UNIQUE TO MIAMI:

PRIVATE MUSEUMS & SPECIAL COLLECTIONS by Carol Damian, Ph.D.

Miami has become renowned as one of the world’s most impressive (and fun) art destinations, especially ByMiami Carlo Damian during Art Week that celebrates Art Basel Beach and a myriad of other fairs and events. There is also another unique element that compliments the fairs and the many museums in the city of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and surrounding areas: the private collection open to the public. Unlike many places that are home to remarkable collections that can only be visited by special arrangement, a select group of South Florida collectors have graciously shared their art in newly designed buildings and renovated warehouses, often in unfamiliar neighborhoods not known for cultural events. While most focus on Contemporary Art, the Maldonado Collection about Modern Art, especially Abstraction, and the Girls Club is

about Women Artists. Almost all the collectors have been noted as among the top 200 collectors in the world by major publications. For Art Week, these 6 world-class collections will be open with new exhibitions and installations that will add another layer to the complex schedule of activities and traffic patterns! of Miami and the Beaches North to Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Art Circuits says mark your calendars and maps and find these not to be missed unique exhibition spaces:

12

the margulies collection at the WAREhOUSE A good place to begin is the first warehouse retro fitted as an art venue, the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse (opened in 1999). Housing the collection of real estate mogul Martin Z. Margulies, this huge 50,000 square foot space always offers a variety of art exhibitions and installations featuring some of the most important artists in the world, including Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, George Segal, Will Ryman, among many others. A yearly reinstallation focuses on different parts of the collection and this year one of the featured exhibitions, ARTE POVERA / Postwar Italian Art, tells the story of Italian artists subverting traditional methods with never before seen works from the private collection and new acquisition. It is a first for Miami. The Margulies Collection is also renowned for photography that showcases the history of the medium. NEW VISION brings a selection of vintage photographs produced in the 1920s and 1930s, between World War I and World War II.

de la Cruz Collection The private collection of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz has been a coveted invitation for many years, beginning in their stunning home on Key Biscayne. As the collection evolved and more space was needed, in 2009, the couple hired architect John Marquette to design their three-story space in the Miami Design District. The exhibition: There Is Always One Direction is a re-contextualization of works within annual exhibitions that reflects their specificity within movements and practices, and their significance within the collection's history. "Looking towards the future, there is always one direction, challenging new forms and ideas." - Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz, 2021

de la Cruz Collection Installation: There is Always One Direction, 2021-2022. Featuring work by Martin Kippenberger, Rufino Tamayo, Albert Oehlen, Carlos Alfonzo, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Harumi Abe, Jim Hodges, Gabriel Orozco, Salvador Dali, and Rudolph Stingel. El espacio 23 WITNESS: Afro Perspectives The Experimental Art Center’s Second Show Explores Issues of Systemic Oppression, Identity and More. The dedicated art space founded by leading philanthropist, entrepreneur, and contemporary art collector Jorge M. Pérez continues its current exhibit: WITNESS: Afro Perspectives from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection. Featuring over 100 works by African and African Diaspora artists, WITNESS will serve as a catalyst for much-needed dialogue around issues of racial equity, political oppression and other troubling events brought to light amidst these unprecedented times.

Rubell Museum In 1993, the Rubell Family Collection/Contemporary Art Foundation, now the Rubell Museum, opened with one of the most significant and far-ranging collections of contemporary art in the world, encompassing 7,200 works by more than 1,000 artists—and still growing. The collection is further distinguished by the diversity and geographic distribution of artists represented within it, and the depth of its holdings of seminal artists, introduced at the entrance by the work of Yayoi Kusama. Her mesmerizing, monumental Narcissus Garden, 1966 composed of 700 stainless steel spheres, flows 200 feet along the museum’s central hall, creating an everchanging river of reflection that beckons and visually teases visitors as they walk through and along it. The museum also features two of Kusama’s Infinity Rooms, her celebrated fully immersive works of kaleidoscopic effects. Other collection highlights include the work of Natalie Ball, Otis Kwame Quiacoe, Genesis Tramaine, and Kenney Yanko. Major works by Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, and Jean Michel Basquiat are among the contemporary masterpieces on view.

Juan Carlos Maldonado Art Collection The Poetics of Exactness

Beyond the historical movement, Minimal Art, this exhibition is an attempt to explore the manifestations of a typically modern expressive need that is still active in the work of many contemporary artists: how to achieve that order, that minimal gesture whose materialization is revealed capable of generating the maximum psychic effect on its viewers? Distinguishing a work of art from the other objects of the world, is the task of many contemporary artists who, like their modern predecessors, produce what we could call a calculated and precise aesthetic, a poetics of the exact.

For a break from Miami and the Beaches, take a drive north to the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the NSU Art Museum and stop at another private collection in Fort Lauderdale with a special focus on women artists.

Girls' Club at the Warehouse You Might Believe You're There An exhibition from the collection of Francie Bishop Good and David Horvitz explores the confluence of anxiety, confusion, wanderlust and loss born out of the recent years' global events and upheavals. Work by Lisa Sanditz, Melanie Daniel, Tracey Baran, Maira Kalman, Constantine Manos, Kristen Thiele, and others is on view. There is always art to see and experience in the Miami Metropolitan area and Art Miami Week is a celebration that brings an opportunity to go beyond the usual to the extraordinary as artists, museums, galleries, and private collections share the best of the best. 16

MIAMI - LAND by Claire Breukel

hile the world quarantined artists continued to make art, outdoor experiences became essential, and the histories of monuments were vitally thrown in to question. As we reenter the Miami art fair megacosm, creativity within the city’s pocketed and context-rich neighborhoods has never been more varied nor rewarding. These multifarious public and semi-public art gems are worth the trip. As your private jet touches down at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, pause to experience Troy Simmons newly completed 22-foot tall, cantilevered sculpture. Bridging art and architecture, Simmons uses an aluminum casing in which to cast acrylic resin in his signature style for this Bombardier Inc. and Miami-Dade Art in Public Places commission.

Send your Lyft to the Miami Beach Convention Center’s East Lobby entrance to enter Art Basel Miami Beach. Why? The City of Miami Beach’s Legacy Purchase program has acquired a signature collage work by Ebony G Patterson, an oil portrait celebrating black identity by Amoako Boafo, and a paint-intervened antique quilt by Sanford Biggers. 18

Equally inspired by tapestry-making, artist Mark Fleuridor’s unforgettable mural Being Held offers a message of hope for families visiting the Miami-Dade Children’s Courthouse in Downtown Miami. Commissioned for Fringe Projects 2021 for The Carol Glassman Donaldson Child-Care Center, Fleuridor renders intimate family scenes over a backdrop of painted patterned fabrics.

MIAMI - LAND Two miles away, patternmaking underpins Jorge Pardo’s handmade mosaic Mural de Miami, a wall composed of 8 shaped and 14 color tiles. Commissioned by Miami Dade Art in Public Places, Pardo offers Miami Port goers a lyrical passage to their cruise ship.

Another fantasy-land escape is the Miami Design District where Winners of the 2021 Design Commission, Studio Proba and Enjoy the Weather, have created TomorrowLand—colorful sculptural candy-like seats accompanied by an interactive AR app experience, for visitors to lounge and play.

by Claire Breukel Need another reality? Head to Bal Harbour Shops from November 30 to December 23 for a sound experience emanating from uniquely crafted horn speakers. Sonic Sculpture music installation is designed by Oswalds Mill Audio (OMA)’s famed founder Jonathan Weiss and showcases a DJ line up curated by Miami’s Soundlux Audio, while expanding on the Guggenheim Museum of Art horn speaker commission celebrating the world’s top sound designers.
