PUBLISHER’S NOTE

HAPPENING NOW IN MIAMI Latitude 25° 47’ 25.19” N Longitude -80° 07’ 60.00” W

It is that time of the year when everything is just fine: the weather, the museums, the shows, Art Basel tsunami is coming, together with Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas. Hurricanes’ menace is gone - and it feels good!

Yes, she was in a very Madonna mood. This year we have 20 art fairs and many other shared spaces that spice up the horizon. If you have trouble deciding where and how much, there’s a fact sheet that will help you to prepare your schedule (30)

Time to welcome our cultural guests, the art circle, the theater of the art world for one week is visiting, all our friends; do you know that feeling that you have when your family is about to arrive? These intense days we will be saying hello non stop, with our eyes wide open to take advantage and enjoy so many valuable pieces of art, many of them arriving to the art fairs from private collections, never seen before, and also so many radical artists and curators reflecting in front of us, feeding us with new ways to “read” the new. Art Circuits proposes an informed way to read Miami, and its newness. What is really new in Miami to tell our regular habitués friends to check on that, and also what should we highlight to the newcomers? Art writer Claire Breukel accomplished the two lists. The new El Espacio 23 of art collector Jorge Pérez and its neighbor The Rubell Family Collection, now Rubell Museum, in a new space in the burgeoning Allapattah, are in both lists and you can be guided through them in detail on pages 12 to 19. Of course you can make your very own checklist: Art Basel Miami Beach: What’s new and True Blue for our regular visitors, and Like a Virgin to the art fair? for the newcomers.

December 1st kicks off the Miami Art Week and it hosts the Progressive Art Brunch, a new inspiring “art tour” that leads you to 12 very cool art galleries in the vibrating neighborhoods of Little Haiti and Little River, opened to the public. ArtCircuits.com will always send the invitation to the selfguided tour, so check it out if you are subscribed to our newsletters and receive free invitations! Miami is a crossroad, a bridge, a melting pot or all of this. That’s why the initiative Art of Black is richer every year celebrating the black diaspora. For current showings go to pages 46-51 where there is surely something of interest in a Miami heritage neighborhoods near you. It is a joy for Art Circuits to be cheering the art news every day, staying truthful and providing accurate information, one more year. That is what a guide is all about. We at Art Circuits believe that art is many things for each of us, but it’s also a reason to feel good, and we want to be your art compass. Liana Pérez liana@artcircuits.com 12

WHAT’S NEW AND

A

t first glance, art fair week is a Candy Store, but just as Madonna’s ever-evolving persona is her enthrall, Miami’s perpetually “new” contemporary offerings add excitement to spaces inarguably True Blue.

The first major Miami public-private collection opened in 1993. Cut to 2019 and the Rubell Family Collection (now Rubell Museum) move from their renowned DEA warehouse to a 100,000 sq. ft. space in the heart of the Allapattah neighborhood opening with a collection exhibition of fixtures such as Keith Haring, Marlene Dumas, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and more. A block away, Peréz Art Museum Miami (PAMM) namesake Jorge Peréz debuts El Espacio 23 with a “social unrest” themed collection exhibition. With Wynwood relegated to street art and restaurants, with exception of the masterful Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, Allapattah is the gentrifying art frontier. Conversely, Ella Cisneros has closed the Cisneros Foundation in Downtown Miami to program nomadically. Speaking of Material Girls, must see gallery exhibitions include John William Bailly at LnS Gallery whose work questions the origins of history and culture using mathematics, mythology, and nature, with words by poet laureate Richard Blanco. In addition, Venezuela-born Florida-based artist Eugenio Espinoza opens “Good Blue Day” offering colorful grids across the expansive Piero Atchugarry gallery. A design pop-up gem is a coveted Eames Retrospective exhibition at CA Modern Home in Miami Beach, opening with featured speaker Eames Demetrios. Open your Heart at the Freedom Tower’s MDC Museum of Art + Design exhibition Where the Oceans Meet merging the work of late Cuban artist Lydia Cabrera and Martinican philosopher Édouard Glissant. Expansion fever reaches The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach boasting a new $100m contemporary art wing. Stop by collector Beth de Woody’s “Bunker” in Palm Beach - access permitting. Art for Everybody? Drive by Hank Willis-Thomas and Nekisha Durrett’s I See Myself in You mural at the Audrey M Edmonson Transit Village, to be unveiled by Miami Dade Art in Public Places during fair week. 14

LIKE A VIRGIN TO TH E AR T FAIR ?

S

outh Beach is La Isla Bonita, but there are worthy spaces further afield. For an optimal experience plan your visits by neighborhood. Here’s how.

The “main” fair is Art Basel Miami Beach at the Miami Beach Convention Center flanked by Design Miami, the two fairs offering “blue chip” art and design, respectively. Look out for 2-for-1 access tickets. Other South Beach musts include The Bass Museum and Art Public’s sculpture exhibition on its doorstep as well as Untitled Miami Beach art fair offering international galleries in an airy seaside tent. Mid Miami Beach is home to Pulse Art Fair’s tents offering beachside parking. Over to the “mainland” and the Design District’s highlights include ICA Miami, Locust Projects and respected private collection fixture The de la Cruz Collection. Nearby, Cherish the Anselm Keifer’s at Wynwood Art District’s Margulies Collection at the Warehouse before heading to the burgeoning Allapattah location of the Rubell Museum and new art center Espacio 23. Sound overwhelming? Take your time as art fair season means extended hours. Head Downtown to the funky NADA art fair at the Ice Palace, and stop by the new “trade fair” owned Art Miami, an accessible art fair crowd-pleaser. From there hop on the free Metromover, and one stop away the Peréz Art Museum Miami is showcasing Miami native Teresita Fernández. Keep an eye out for the newly restored George Segal sculpture Abraham’s Farewell to Ishmael (1987) also at the museum. Want to cross the Miami Dade Borderline? Along the Tamiami Trail the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU has a New York-centric Stonewall Riot Anniversary exhibition sharing the LGBTQ civil rights movement story. Due North? Catch Chilean artist Cecilia Vicuña at The Museum of Contemporary Art / MOCA or Get in to the Groove with Happy an exhibition at NSU Museum Fort Lauderdale featuring FriendsWithYou and a celebrated Mark Rothko.
