Urban vs. Rural B etsey Gravatt is a visual artist living and working in Denton, Texas. She is finishing up a BFA in Studio Art, with a concentration in Drawing and Painting, from the University of North Texas. Her mixed media 2D works and her clay sculptures have been in several exhibitions in the north Texas area, including the Annual Student Exposition at the 500x Gallery in Dallas, and the Fort Worth Community Art Center’s annual Art in the Metroplex, where her paintings have won awards such as the 55th Annual Voertman’s Award and the Cindi and Mike Holt Award. Betsey’s paintings and sculptures are colourful,

whimsical, inviting and include elements derived from nature and the human body. Her current body of work is influenced strongly by childhood, during which she lived in rural areas of North Carolina and Texas, and spent her summers camping. Her experiences in rural environments fuelled interest in the differing ways of life in rural and urban areas, and have encouraged her to make art that addresses the varying degrees of interaction between natural and tman-made worlds. Rather than show these relationships though realistically rendered landscapes or scenes, Betsey translates her ideas onto paper and panel

non-objectively, through the colors, shapes, and lines she uses. The juxtaposition between natural and man-made is shown in her works through the use of organic and linear forms. Through the interaction of these forms, she attempts to depict environmental relationships in the real world. Betsey uses bright, vibrant colors that she associates with happy memories, and although she may have a specific memory in mind while creating each piece, it is not crucial that the viewer comprehends each concept or idea while looking at her pieces. Identity is an important, if not central, factor in the creation of her pieces, and she believes that the viewer’s identities and life experiences can help shape their interpretations of her work. Because of this, Betsey puts an emphasis on experimentation in many of her pieces, whether it is with composition, colors, shapes, or materials. She attempts to create another reality in her work that leaves room for exploration for and in the process, is creating works that are as spatially ambiguous as they are bright and inviting.
“Betsey Gravatt is an emerging painter and sculptor from Denton, Texas, working in a variety of mediums such as watercolor, gouache, ink, pencil, and clay.
In the upcoming months Betsey will be busy graduating from the University of North Texas and exhibiting in several juried exhibitions, popup shows, and art fairs around North Texas. If you are interested in seeing more of her work or purchasing a piece, you can follow her progress at www.betseygravatt.com.

Awakening Through Music 14
artinzene/ Issue #2
By Daniel Bellone
www.danielbellone.com
“Awakening Through Music” is the most amazing journey that I’ve ever experienced in my life. Actually, these days I’ve been looking at my life in depth trying to see what is the most extraordinary thing that I’m experiencing. Some of my friends say, “travelling all around the world must be so thrilling, meeting so many people and being able to do what you love” but actually there is something much beyond any of these things. The powerful wave of Awakening that I’m witnessing is in another league, far beyond anything! People are transforming their lives in such miraculous ways, healing their bodies, their relationships, growing to deep levels of consciousness and awakening to love, among many other things. This is something revolutionary and is the most challenging journey
that you could even embark. As you go through this transformation, they way you see life changes. It’s the same reality, the same people, the same things you do, but how you experience them completely changes. Life becomes more like a mystery, more childlike again. As you go into deeper levels of awakening, many physical transformations beign to happen to the brain and the heart. It is like a complete rewiring of our organs and our energy. The nervous system expands and your senses become very heightened and extra sensitve. Life becomes vibrant and you find peace within. From this wonderful state creating a happy world around is very natural. As more and more people start becoming awakened to their “natural self”, the world in which we live in will be completely different.

I started playing the guitar when I was 10 years old. Music has always been the most inspiring thing in my life. I had my first band at the age of 13, playing in the most popular clubs in Buenos Aires, but somehow a couple of years later I lost all my motivation. Music felt completely empty so I buried my guitar in the closet for almost 5 years. It’s only when this awakening started happening to me that everything acquired a completely different meaning. Music came back strongly; the only difference is that this time music was like a vessel carrying something precious, the mantras. Actually there are 3 things in my concerts: the music, the mantras and awakening. When I play the guitar and sing, people get entertained and the mind finds enjoyment in the tunes, in the rhythm and
16
artinzene/ Issue #2
in the variety of things they see on stage. The second factor is the mantras. Their high frequency vibrations change the environment completely, making it sacred, pure and ecstatic; silence becomes full and complete, the Presence is so strong. The mantras create the context for the third element to come in strongly, the awakening. This is where the transformation happens to people. Awakening doesn’t need the music or the mantras, is far beyond the first two, but creating this context is a very easy and powerful way of getting it. This is my passion and all the music I create has this deep intent to bring awakening to people. I believe that a new genre of music is being born. This is not something new, it’s ancestral; the only new thing is
that now we are able to access to this sacred science of sound and vibration and share it with big crowds with beautiful tunes. In the past, these mantras where only shared in a very reserved context and to receive one mantra could take years of austerities and preparation. This music not only provides all the entertainment we are looking for, it also makes you grow. Happiness and growth cannot be separate; you cannot separate heat from fire, they come together. Now humanity is ready for a leap, in a world where technology and information is advancing at an outstanding rate, we are in the perfect time for the awakening. This will give us the sense of direction we need and we’ll slowly move from competition to cooperation, feeling connected and one with everything.

Creative Entrepreneurian's Network
E
by Michelle Ward
lissa Freeman has created a new movement through Facebook, the Creative Entrepreneurian’s Network. It’s a place where artists and creative people can meet, interact and share their artwork,
make friendships through the group, and inspire each other to live their lives in a more creative way.
18
artinzene/ Issue #2
I sat down with Elissa and she told me how it all began. “It all started because I was looking for a group that was global and full of creative people and allowed people to sell and promote their artworks. I looked around for something of this nature, however all I could find was regional or statewide groups. There didn’t seem to be anything more than this and I found this frustrating. Most creative groups don’t allow the members to sell or promote their creative gift. “ “In 20 minutes I had created the Creative Entrepreneurian’s Network. And yes, I know Entrepreneurian isn’t really a
art
word. It’s made up to differentiate our group from other groups with a similar name. It grew from there, and is gaining momentum everyday. I do zero promotion for this group. I don’t need to. It’s a force of nature, People from the US, European, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands and South America; all continents have been covered. The international connections create a global community of like-minded people. It’s place where the creative person can share their latest works. “
“In a matter of just twelve months we have reached almost 1000 members. What is really exciting about this group is that the members drive it. They are so passionate

art about what they do they and they use this as their virtual gallery, stage and studio. Musicians, artists, filmmakers, poets, writers, any creative field can join the group and contribute.” “Alliances form and friendships are being built around the world. An author, who is a member, was looking for an illustrator for her book found exactly what she was looking for through a simple post in Creative Entrepreneurian’s Network. Artists from this group created the Barefoot Conversations talk show logo and banner. “ Elissa hosted and opened an art show for artists discovered in this great group. There is nothing else like it. She also opened the launch of Artinzene Magazine 1st
Issue in February 2015. Elissa has a passion for helping creative people clear what is blocking them from finding their success. She has set up Creative Entrepreneurian’s Network as a no-cost forum. Members also have access to her and can ask her any questions for free. She believes it’s important to have a good coach and mentor. If anyone is interested in joining, please go to the link below or search Creative Entrepreneurian’s Network in Facebook and click “Join”. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ CreativeEntrepreneuriansNetwork/

Film Review Mad Max: Fury Road
::
by Mark Wambold
Action Thriller
::
Director - George Miller
Mad Max: Fury Road is a steampunk, rock’n roll nitrofuelled ride from start to finish. It’s a post apocalyptic chase movie rarely slowing down for long - bad guys chasing good girls (and Max). Part of the visceral thrill of the action is that instead of CGI, we’re watching stunt people thrown around, big stuff is rolling over and blowing up – and you can tell it’s all really happening!
in which ugly might not prevail. It’s not surprising strong women refreshingly abound in this film. Miller has often favoured Amazonian-type characters in this world before: the Warrior Woman in Mad Max II, and Aunty Entity (Tina Turner) in Mad Max III come to mind. Apparently Miller has plans for the sequel entitled Mad Max Furiosa which one can only hope is made – Charlize Theron is awesome!
Stylistic influences are mostly drawn from the 2nd and 3rd Max Max films. Deep desert ambers and golds fill the frame, monster-muscle-cars, and the fuel tanker/war truck return, along with paired-down dialogue (who needs words when a look and an action will suffice).
Very few directors can return to the very same material years later and triumph. George Lucas had free reign to recreate the magic of his Star Wars trilogy and mostly failed. James Cameron returned to his Terminator material and made one of the best science fiction/action films ever. That George Miller has also succeeded 30 years later is no mean feat. See this film on the big screen while you can, and enjoy one of the best action films of the past decade.
Likewise familiar characters abound: a well-cast Tom Hardy as Mad Max, King Immortan Joe – a tyrannical mad-man (akin to ‘Lord Humungus’ from Mad Max II), and countless mostly faceless War Boys who eventually make up the bad-guy casualties. Yet it’s the female characters that really front up and kick ass in the film. Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa calls the shots and often overshadows Mad Max in ability. Later on in the film a biker gang of older women heroically slide into the narrative. It’s also fitting the only conventional examples of beauty in the film (other than the desert) are the Five Wives – played by various model/actresses. They represent hope, a future 22

Food Intolerances By Rhianna Smith
Food
intolerances are becoming more and more common in our lives today. They differ from food allergies in their symptoms and time of effect. While food allergies often show symptoms immediately after consumption, food intolerances can display symptoms up to 48 hours after ingestion. Because food intolerances do not cause an immediate reaction they can be difficult to identify. They are often responsible for long term and constant symptoms such as headaches, bloating, constipation, diahorrea, skin rashes, acne, allergic rhinitis, and food cravings. The top five foods responsible for food intolerances are dairy, wheat, soy, eggs and nuts. A reactive food needs to be 100% removed from the diet for 8 weeks to allow the immune system to reset and the symptoms resolve. In treating food intolerances, an elimination diet removes the most common reactive foods for 8 weeks and then reintroducing them again on a rotational basis, watching for a recurrence of symptoms. Elimination diets can be difficult to adhere to and take time and planning. A faster way to investigate for food intolerances is through an IgG food intolerance test. These are available 26

Universal Touch Since the historic impact of your personal Yang comet spirit “sperm” collided with your vast voluptuous Yin moon “egg” to come together and compose a symphony of you. When the double helix snakes unwrapped and rewrapped in loving embraces to recite the poetry of nucleotides recounting stories recycling ancestral realizations and gene mutations. While secured to the wondrous womb of the woman who would be your first contact to the world at large, ambassadors of chemicals were there to meet and greet with agents from the vegetable kingdom. Diplomatic proteins were the prolific products of such unions and produced pantheons of your person. Activation by first inhalation of air actualizes the necessary connection between your being with the galactic breathe. Neurological signals transduced tacitly through the first cuddles transmit all the chemicals needed to further tactical trajectories of growth. Oxytocin is in motion perpetuating a commotion of bonding parental and relative relations cross-generations.
by Izzy Shafey
As you tumble and toss yourself across, and on and in and through and through all that life has to offer you, while never a single part of you is not in junction with what’s “not you”. Your fingers reach out to breach the world, your nose thinks it knows it. You taste with your tongue tantalizingly trying to turn calories into your embracing tummy. Your eyes are the spies that mesmerize in the touch of light to synthesize the universe visualized Then you meet one, who… you are convinced that it’s true that they cannot possibly be you. and by first touch a tingle ensues, until a time you must subdue … OR … pursue… pleasures’ kingdom , after all, is the conspiracy by which genes renew So this is how it always is, with all you crazy kids, thinking that you are alone and no one understands though, but as above so below. Since the start of it all when time and space decided to touch the result was all this and such. Then you really could know, that the urge to touch is just a sign of the entire universe’s design.

The Benefits of Morning Exercise By Rhianna Smith With the weather starting to get cooler it becomes easier and easier to sleep in, spending as much time as possible between the sheets. Exercise often goes out the window in the colder months, when warm comfort food and relaxing at home trumps getting up early and working up a sweat. But there are actually some very good reasons why you should not to give up your morning exercise. Melatonin Regulation Melatonin is a hormone responsible for sleep patterns and works in response to light stimulation. Sunlight stimulates the pineal gland and helps to ‘turn down’ melatonin production and ‘turn up’ cortisol production. This is like switching our function button from ‘sleep’ to ‘wake’. Without adequate sunlight exposure in the morning you can feel groggy and tired. It is best if you exercise first thing in the morning, without sunglasses, to boost the suns wakeup effect. Waking early can also encourage healthy sleep patterns. Early to bed and early to rise is the healthiest sleep pattern you can have, so even if getting up an hour earlier is hard to adjust to, you will be doing your body a favour.

Fat burning Exercising before breakfast can encourage the body to start burning stored fat, which can be beneficial if you are wanting to lose weight. If you try exercising on a full stomach you may feel heavy and uncomfortable, or may suffer from stiches or cramps. Exercising before breakfast means the body does not have a lot of glucose in the system from recently digested food, so the body is more likely to reach for stored fat to provide fuel for the muscle cells. Over and Done With This is a good one for those who have a very busy schedule. If you choose to exercise in the morning, by 8am you should have finished your exercise for the day. This means no matter what happens during the day, if you get caught up at work, or if you make some unhealthy food choices, at least you have already done some healthy exercise! Energy Boosting Many people find that exercising of a morning gives their body a great energy boost. Exercise boosts endorphin levels and can give you a happy hormone rush, increasing mood and energy levels over the day.

Bowel Moving The benefits of morning exercise on the bowels are fantastic! If you find yourself a little sluggish going to the bathroom, then some morning stretching and exercise might just be what you need to get things moving. Yoga, walking, jogging, and other stretching can all help to ‘wake up’ the digestive system and encourage the elimination of waste. Morning Dose of Vitamin D Morning sunshine is often gentle enough to go out in without the fear of getting sunburnt. This is especially true for the autumn, winter and spring months. Vitamin D is created on the surface of the skin after sun exposure, and needs 15 minutes to soak in and be absorbed by the body. If you go for a 30-45 minute walk without sunscreen, you are likely to absorb a healthy dose of D. This will depend as well on your geographical location, so make sure you judge your sun exposure based on your location and personal skin tone. With all these benefits to help encourage you, morning exercise is a wonderful way to make the most of these autumn mornings.

Detox Your Pet!
by Dr Elaine Cebuliak
We all want our health span to equal our life span, and we certainly want our pets to live a happy, healthy and long life. Unfortunately we cannot make this an “eternal” or forever life – but we can try to help them bypass the poor quality events – arthritis, dermatoses, otitis externae (ear infections) and cancer caused by poor diets, and toxins. The simple answer to detox is to feed fresh, organic balanced foods that are species appropriate, and to provide ample sources of pure clean water.www.catinfo. org gives great information about feeding cats, and our clinic www.animalwellness.com.au can help with specific diets.
36
artinzene/ Issue #2
Adding a good quality Spirulina or chlorella and Zeolite can help to bind out toxins that have accumulated in one’s body. If there are heavy metals - such as Lead in the environment eg. in Mt Isa or Broken HIll mining towns, Zeolite given as small amounts weekly can help remove some of the toxicity. A complete blood count and serum analysis prior to embarking on a diet change or “detox” helpful to customize a particular organ system recovery. For example, renal problems (picked up on elevated BUN and Serum Creatinine) are helped to detoxify with the herb Rehmannia, and liver (serum ALP,GGT,ALT elevations) toxins are cleared with s-AME, milk thistle, dandelion root and vitamin B’s. All require thorough rehydration therapy.
Where are these pollutants? Our pets, and us, drink them in our water (fluoride, oestrogens “the birth control pills”, agricultural chemicals), and eat them in our foodinsecticides, herbicides (GMO produce are glyphosate friendly-meaning you will get a big dose of BT toxins and Round up ready gut problems if you ingest corn, maize, wheat! We also absorb them from our skin - which is a carrier NOT a barrier. Avoid putting unnecessary toxins onto your, or your pet’s skin: This has implications for nanoparticles in sunscreen (linked to cancer) and phthalates and parabens in soaps, shampoos and cosmetics. Bodies also produce endogenous toxins, that is stress and its dependent hormones. Adrenaline, cortisol etc cause some wear and tear on internal tissues and produce some waste that also needs to be cleared out. Think your dog is chilled out and not stressed? Think
again. Most little white fluffies (maltese, poodles, shitzu) just love and miss their owners so much that they can burn out their adrenals the same as their humans. Talk to an animal behaviourist to improve their attitude, and work on “Calm and mindful” pet therapy. Check your food labels: Natural does not necessarily mean “Natural” as in “gift from Nature”. It is commonly a marketing tool meaning “can taste like a natural food” or smells like a “Nature derived smell” when in fact it can be entirely synthetic and made from plastics, coal tar - a by product of the petrochemical industry. It’s a lot cheaper and therefore more profitable for the company too. They can make liver or chicken flavour and use red erythrosine dyes onto plastic “food” chews that so many dogs go Wacko (you know the TV commercial!) from.

health Don’t be fooled! If a substance has “not yet been found” to cause cancer it might just mean that the correlation has not been documented in enough places - and that possibly too many doctors/ research scientists are on the receiving end of a pay back! (Conspiracy theorist? Nah, its just business as usual! If your research funding pays your mortgage who/what ya gunna call??). You can check pubmed entrez – the scientific research site– for information about the anthropogenic (ie synthetic man made substances) found in the atmosphere that DO NOT BREAK DOWN in the ocean’s waters. As a rule of thumb think about these 5 ALIVE Actions: 1) Fluid therapy – ensure food is hydrating (this is *not * dry food) 2) Avoid all Artificial “food” colourings, and most preservatives (vitamin E, C are ok) 3) Fresh is best. The organic produce and pulp from your juicer is an awesome addition to the pet’s meat. 5% for cats, up to 40% for dogs. 4) Green supplements detox--chlorophyll (spirulina, chlorella, kelp powder) – small amount for cat, larger for dogs. 5) Consult with an Integrative Holistic Veterinarian. www.animalwellness.com.au

Intuition and What Happens When an Unstoppable Force Meets an Immoveable Object by Melanie Brockwell
www.livingintwoworlds.com From your first breath to your last thought, you are a continuation of energy already in motion. At no point did you ‘come in’ as a separate being with an undistorted view. And it is the distortion that makes you unique; and it is the way you understand the distortion - the way you feel about how you show up in the world - that makes a difference. For example, if you’re on a mission of great import, and your self-work asks you to be different, better, or somehow less who you are and more what you idealise yourself to be... then this is your life! In this way, your self-work is not self-acceptance, it’s a rejection and ideal that highlights who you are as a list of flaws. And your life is a rejection of the I Am which means you can’t trust anything. Remember: the difference you make is your experience of yourself, your experience of life as self-acceptance.

health This means, a man or woman can be unconscious of their ‘impact’, live a fully present existence and still do all the things that appear to make the world a better place even though that was never their intention or focus. And on the flip side, a man or woman can spend their whole life believing they are committed to making a difference when each day is full of doubt, hatred of the system or people in opposition to their efforts, and distress around achieving the outcomes that are important to them. When the outcomes are more important than the experience, your life is a series of battles and constant assessments of how well you are doing based on the evidence you can see. And here’s the thing! We can’t see the whole picture. There is more going on than our senses can transcribe, and the filters in place make it impossible for us to be objective. No matter how scientific you think you’re being in your commitment to doing the ‘right’ thing or being your ‘best’ self, there is no way around our subjective nature. You can surround yourself with like minds and only read the books that support your way of seeing the world, but none of this reinforcement makes your truth universal. Your truth is yours. It’s based on the configuration of energy that nature and nurture have made you; and it’s a powerful recognition of how life works for you (so don’t reject it), but it’s not an immoveable object.
For example, you say “Spirit is all powerful and I am an expression of the Divine” but then you don’t trust your voice and you make other people responsible for your feelings. Why? Most of the explanations for this will make you faulty or unwise. I don’t think that helps. I don’t think you say one thing and act on another belief because there is something wrong with you or because you haven’t figured it out yet. I think it’s an invitation. For instance, the idea of a self-sabotaging belief is based on the assumption that you made a mistake or someone else was wrong. So even before you’ve started looking at what makes you the way you are, the story is founded in trying to change something because you’re a victim either of your own stupidity or someone else’s malice or neglect. How the hell are you supposed to trust yourself when your first point of self-awareness is about being right, wrong or incomplete? I think there is another way to begin our exploration of selfawareness. It’s called Heart Alchemy. Heart Alchemy is about self-acceptance, presence and translating all of our experiences as a conversation with the cosmos. All of our emotions, thoughts, dreams, relationships, issues and everyday scenarios are showing up for selfawareness without judgement. You still get to feel, fornicate and follow your experience wherever it takes you. It’s just that when you’re telling the story about what’s really going on, your trust in who you are is powerful enough to hold your trust ARTINZENE / Issue #2

The Strong Village Project Hi, I’m Tracey and I live on the Gold Coast, Australia with my mother and 21 yr old son (I’m also known as The Gift Fairy) As a 10 year old girl, I read a book titled Nobodys Children - I’ve never forgotten that story ! about children who were unwanted or whose parents were unable to care for them.

For many years, I was drawn to visit India and in 2012 visited Shikshangram Childrens Shelter as a volunteer. Upon leaving, I knew I would return to India and find a way to be able to help the children living in poverty. This was my dream to be able to provide a loving home and safehaven for the many children in need.
health I’ve sponsored children thru World Vision since 1999 which gives meaning to my life and I am very driven with a goal to provide homes for street children with one in India and one in North Thailand. Once the home in India is built I plan to work with and contribute to what is known as The Strong Village Project. Please help me to make this happen. I have plans for Homes for Children to be as self sufficient as possible (I have a Health Charity Business, purely to assist with ongoing expenses and enable me to also pursue ongoing Volunteer work and projects in 3rd world countries) . Having survived much adversity in my life I’ve dedicated my future to my son and my charity goals. Please help me to care for and protect street children by providing them with a home and ensuring they attend school. We are also looking for volunteers assisting those most in need. The Home Shelter will have guest accomodation and you would be welcome to visit. For donations over $2000 you may stay 5 days
as a Guest of Honor and share love, laughter and joy. The joy in helping others fills my heart and soul completely and it could fill yours too. Alternatively, you could think of it as Timeshare with a Difference . Any donations over $5000 would include a 5 day holiday all inclusive for 5 years. On behalf of street children, Please help me to fulfil this dream goal. (Naturally background checks will apply to unknown visitors.) Children are the future - let them lead the way, all children deserve a nurturing childhood. Please give what you can so that those children who have been neglected may be given a chance to have faith and know love and be properly cared for in a nurturing caring environment. From the bottom of my heart. I will always thank you for making this possible. Blessings !

The Journey
by Gordon Ray
We are all born into a growing awareness of this, our material world. We have relations, friends, school and later a job, a partner and life rolls on. And yet, we can go through life feeling comfortable and be unaware that there is a metaphysical existence beyond this physical life. So the danger of this life is that it can seduce us into becoming absorbed by it. Yet we are here to experience this life in preparation for the real life which is the spiritual life which lies beyond this earthly existence. There are several ways that can alert us to our metaphysical existence. There are the myriad forms of life around us, all of which have been created. There are the wonders of natural beauty that lie around us. There is the wonder of loving relationships which may or may not involve sexual activity. It is easy to be so wrapped up in daily activity that the underlying spiritual life is ignored. This is why great teachers such as, Silver Birch advise us to seek quiet periods where we switch off from the volume of the daily round and enter into silence and
48

become a receptacle for spiritual voices. This practice may take some time, but eventually we will start to receive intuitive promptings. These are never malicious or injurious to anyone, but we are made aware of the existence of the world beyond this present one. We become aware that it is our natural home. Yet until this knowledge arises in us, we can just go on involved in this life to the exclusion of any deeper considerations. Yet if we ask ourselves: Why are we here? Is it a mere accident? Is being here a meaningless event or do we live in a meaningful world? This is where we can point to the real beauty of nature, to the wonder of birth’ to love. We may then see the world as being involved in purposeful activity and of people also so involved. You may ask: Why are we not born with this awareness? Infact we are. It is just an unquestioning acceptance of this material life and seeking its comfort that blinds us to the metaphysical. As Buddhists tell us, we must awaken and not be subservient to a false consciousness; the song of materialism.

Hello and welcome to my page of hope. Through my own personal and professional experiences as a teacher and healer, my understanding is that life is necessarily about ebb and flow. We create and attract to us experiences that provide us with opportunities for Soul growth and development. That if we allow ourselves to trust in our own divinity, we can glean insight and wisdom from our experiences. So in order to affect change, we need to understand that experience begets opportunity and that opportunity presents us with choice. Breaking Through
by Aaron Cook
Brothers and sisters, No doubt all of you at some point, if not already, will encounter a creative block. It can come from many different directions for many different reasons, whether your passion is painting, music, poetry, photography, writing or dance. I enjoy all of these artistic expressions (especially photography, a good picture like any art form has the ability to stop you in your tracks and clear your mind, it brings perspective, I like that) however to me these expressions are more hobbies than passions. I come and go from them, out of enjoyment and interest rather than following a creative calling as you may be. My passion and my fire is selfenquiry. We who prioritize our creativity and self-expression over material possession, wealth and power are just simple people following an inner calling to spiritual truth, though sometimes for

health various reasons we get stuck. Maybe you need a muse, some inspiration or a new goal to work towards. Maybe as you’ve grown so much as an artist, as you’ve followed more and more your internal, individual, spiritual compass you’ve come to see the world in a very different way. Your paradigms have shifted, your motivations, triggers and pleasures have swung. Lately I’ve gone through some challenging blocks and obstacles in my practice that I’d like to share with you, perhaps there’s some perspective through my experience worth sharing. Somewhat recently I had begun to resent in a way my spiritual practice and the inevitable changes in my outlook and perspective on life. When you live with a mindset that happiness is somewhere and in something else other than you there are occasional peaks that my practice was seemingly denying me. The rollercoaster was

health now more level, sure it’s nice not to have so many downs, more shallow downs at least, but I was feeling the ups were leaving me too. My motivation was wavering when I came across an article from Ram Dass, a great teacher I’d like to share a bit of with you: “Very often people report to me that meditation has brought an emptiness into their life. Everything seems meaningless. It takes great faith to ride through such heavy periods of spiritual transformation. I recall the near anger I had towards spirituality as I saw my favorite rushes fall away. Things I had previously gotten great thrills from became empty.” Talking about an event that years ago brought much excitement but now the second time around with a different outlook was not so magical Ram Dass says, “I had to realize my memory of that moment was so high because by comparison the rest of my life was much lower. Instead of peaks and valleys, I had a plateau. Each moment starts to have a richness or thickness of its own. Fewer moments are special as more of them become richer.”

These words really spoke to me and I remembered why I chose this path, not to have the highest highs that inevitably precede some low lows, but to spread the highs, the happiness through every moment, to embrace peace. Sure there will be hard times, that’s part of the human experience but with non-attachment and universal perspective you have the tools to work through these challenges with grace and wisdom. When you start to question why you are doing what you are, following your creative impulses, letting your light shine, remember why you are doing it, because it brings you peace and happiness. There may be no more important pursuit in life however yours and others judgments and opinions may have you second guessing yourself. Sometimes we can catch ourselves feeling guilty about our state of happiness. Your friends, family and the wider society may not want your happiness and freedom around them because it highlights their unhappiness and bound limitation in the
never ending quest for more. More money, more possessions, more power, more recognition, but all of these things are outside of the self, they are very much short term securities and momentary pleasures, they can’t last. That which is phenomenal will one day surely be gone. The harder we cling to these things, the harder it will be to let go and there is no escaping that process. No doubt you will have your motivations, priorities and goals questioned at some point as an artist. Maybe you have had supportive families and friends, maybe not. If you have it’s because it was for you, if not, it wasn’t. There are lessons on both sides but there’s no right or wrong, better or worse, there just is. You get only what you need. Sometimes you just need to step back and look at it from a deeper perspective, a more universal awareness. Just follow your heart and grow at the rate you grow, don’t worry or have attachments to the outcomes. Just listen, just flow, just be. Much love, Aaron.

India When Two Cultures Meet by Brendan McMullan
India is the type of place you either love or hate or both only minutes apart. This place is defiantly one of a kind. Nowhere on earth is as diverse and crazy as India. Nothing can prepare you for the intense colors, smells, people, food and absolute mad house. My purpose as a photographer in India was to get down and dirty and capture the soul of the every day people on the street - peer into their eyes and wonder what life they have been living in comparison to my sheltered lifestyle back in Australia. When we arrived down south in Chennai there was a massive culture shock. There didn’t appear to be any westerner’s around and everyone was looking at me, people were asleep on the side of the road and cows walking everywhere and alot of rubbish on the streets. It took a few days to adjust to get used to the madness and the way of life for most indians. ARTINZENE / Issue #2

My favorite thing to do is walk along the street and snap pictures of the local business people working in there trade. After I say hello, they love to have a chat and be photographed. I’ve got to say Indian people are the friendliest people I have ever met. Our next town we visited was Coimbatore which was in the middle of nowhere. We were lucky enough to get one of the old men to give us a tour of the town. He was a retired postman so he took us to some really fascinating places behind the usual tourists places, such as the local hospital, post office and coconut oil factory. It was an awesome experience and I’m sure not many tourists get to see this. Delhi was one of my favorite places to photograph because nowhere else are you able to step outside your hostel and have such great photo opportunities. Old Delhi in particular for the ancient architecture, the immense variety of business and the diverse range in Indian people. However all of these factors make it hard to take a photo. All in all India is an amazing place, you will love it but its not easy because of the language barrier, the heat and the hustle and bustle. All these things do take their toll so I recommend now and then you should take out a day to just chill. You need to visit and find out for yourself what India is really like. ARTINZENE / Issue #2

B utterflies & P omegranates
Red, rich and juicy pomegranates and butterflies everywhere. It’s the month of August 2014 and I am back in India. The special deepening has begun and there is transformation in the air. To be back on these sacred grounds and feeling the energies once again, every cell in my body was buzzing about, bumping around moving on saying “we have work to do” feeling beside themselves. We would have to say a deep sensation of tender gratitude was occurring inside me, feelings of oneness - I was home. It always surprises me in how much effort is made to every course I have taken here. They always deliver 110% of heartfelt joy infused with the intention of raising the consciousness of humanity, helping us all to evolve spiritually. All the teachings fromSri Amma Bhagavan is given freely, an unselfish act of compassion and love to help deepen the feelings of divine grace here on Earth.
This time around for me there were plenty of extraordinary experiences. I was more aware to what could happen and what to ask the divine for such gifts, but nothing could have prepared me for the unexpected blessings of this sanctuary. Such mystical mysteries and miracles unfolded everyday. This place is what you would call a phenomenon, it’s true – one would have to experience it for themselves. Day one - Travelling to campus and passing the temple! What a beautiful site to see but this time the most magnificent puffy white clouds were above her. I was in awe, it was so picturesque and I decided to take some photos. Later we saw a little golden spirit being or would you say, a golden fairy helper who protects the temple was in full view making him known to the world. Just amazing. See website for photos.

The first two weeks were my favourite in the world; butterflies everywhere. It was like heaven, walking to the bus of a morning I was afraid to step on one. I was living a dream so amazing to see. Surrounded by awakened people I couldn’t help but feel liberated and extremely blessed at one time. There was a sense of peace and a knowing of such treasures we were all embarking on. 5.30 - Rise

Shall we pray and give thanks for yet another day. All in silence we bow our heads. The days were filled with gifted knowledge, sacred tools, and ancient yogis preparing the human body to evolve and raise its vibrations. You see the concept of Oneness is neither a religion
nor a cult. It is simply a community that teaches us to discover our own path to freedom, to discover the love and compassion within us, that helps people to awaken to the self and helps transform their lives. Oneness supports our growth, helps us move forward with the company of the divine grace passing down powerful tools and applying thousands of year old yogis to strip away the built-up barriers we have accumulated over the years of conditioning so we may truly experience the God life force within all of us. I can’t tell you how much I am feeling blessed to be a part of oneness by receiving the support and been given ancient knowledge as tools to apply in my life. to appreciate the beauty of life and to live with freedom in our hearts, I couldn’t ask for anything more. Let as all continue to pray for higher consciousness for the world, for the divine’s love to fill everyone’s heart and mind. Let us all pray for our Mother Earth to be saturated with golden healing light and unconditional love, for all the animals to be protected and freed. Let us all pray that all relationships be engaged with tender care and kindness. May we all feel the divine’s love and grace and share it, feel gratitude and embrace it, experience the moment and enjoy it. The journey into the divine continues, there is no turning back now. America
by Louise Moriaty
If you had ever told me I would have a love affair with America, I would have told you you were nuts. Ideologically for a long time I saw them as the ‘Devil Devil’ of the patriarchal capitalist culture. When I decided to go to India to do my social work field placement at an orphanage, the cheapest way to buy a ticket was to go round the world. A friend told me the perfect place for me in America was a summer camp in Pennsylvania for kids with learning disabilities. As a side line I was blaming everyone else in my life for feeling incomplete, so my mission at the time was to free the children of the world from all the tyrannies they were having their freedom squashed by. So it seemed natural that I would go to the two far ends of the spectrum in the world and have an experience ‘helping’. Describing summer camp as the ideal of consumer culture does not begin to explain the one use, throw away world I lived in for nine weeks. Then four months in Hyderabad with orphans who between the 100 of them had less stuff than me or my brother and sister individually. Even so, this first foray into the world turned the tables of my mind upside down. Nothing was ever as it seemed and as I tried to keep things in their boxes, America is like this, Indian orphans are like that, I was continually overwhelmed by the unique qualities of each life and 70

each story and how I, as an outsider, could turn peoples stories round like a diamond and read them from so many different angles. I had done my first tour of duty of the world and was drawn to return to Summer camp in Honesdale again. I wanted to re-experience the exquisite beginnings of fall, rafting on the broad rivers, skunks, racoons, fireflies, bumblebees and bears, and of course kids who made visible so much about my own culture. I was intrigued. The expansiveness of not only the nature of the country; Green and White mountains, cultural icons so familiar from movies, rivers exploring giant rocks that leaked the otherwise unacknowledged indigenous energy. Then of course all the diversity and disparity of city, old and new, rich and poor, re-claimed and forgotten. So similar and yet removed from my experience here in Australia. I had thought American’s ignorant and arrogant, loud and coarse. So their kindness to me and their willingness to want to understand was not what I had expected. I was seeing how little I knew of this diverse and exquisite country that seemed to be the beacon that most other countries were emulating. Since that time I have returned four times and have found an innate artistic cultural diversity with a freedom to express that I find sometimes lacking in Australia. My next trip you can follow on my blog www.lovelouisemoriarty.com I have been gifted the opportunity of being mentored by some of the greatest living poets of our times and I will be making the most of it. After creating Cambridge University’s first weekly Student TV Show for a local channel she subsequently managed upon graduation, Oonagh’s first national television appearances came through accepting her second role a year later in London - segment producing/reporting for Europe’s biggest breakfast show GMTV (6 million daily viewers). 78

A natural lucid dreamer, tel(e)mpath and intuitive adept since childhood, Oonagh also works as a talent scout, space creator and healer, weaving personalised manifestation practice workshops, remote readings and Love CLUB (Official) live shows into her life as additional on-purpose offerings of the heart. An accurate Asperger’s Syndrome diagnosis omitted (to both amusement & heartache!) during childhood was initially flagged by professors at Cambridge, who were the first to position Oonagh’s talents at the communicative end of the spectrum. They credit this with accounting for her “equal-parts genius and eccentricity” - while she reckons it may well explain the popular nude talk on ‘Body Image Consciousness’ she delivered at The Sydney Opera House for the ABC that time. Oonagh is available for TV/Radio presenting, media coaching, guest/keynote speeches or copywriting services (excellent references across all genres). She also accomodates professional, by-donation & sliding-scale bookings for her unique Bespoke HeArtcrafted Poetry (ideal written or performed as special occasion gifts), Telempathic Readings/ Manifestation Sessions (proven track record; Skype/phone/in-person) and Conscious Touch Intuitive Healing Massage (unique approach; inspiring results). Joshua Holms ”Truth seeking, bummily poetic, freedom fighting, word bending free spirit on a quest to command the English language in a bid to attain and express the unthinkable; to shed light on inequality and spark the mind that might change the world.”
poetry Gentlemen’s honor. Your fragrance lingered in the air as I catch that sweet smell of your perfume, my mind is chaos. Desire to have you in my arms and yet held back for Waaters gentlemen’s honour. To have held your By Sashton hand in mine, but only for a little while awoke a stirring inside. Passionate my heart grows for you but friendship constrains me. For if I try to pull you near, I will only push you away further. Has all good grace given to me, been taken away to have someone placed in my life that I cannot have. Patience I must endure to see what the future holds.
White rose petal As a single raindrop falls and comes to rest on the white rose petal, it will balance for a time but will run its course and fall again coming to its final resting place among the earth. The rose clings to the moist embrace of the water and draws it in, waiting for the next drop in hope it lingers longer.
Ever green fields The wind whips around my body as I walk with the unwavering warmth of the sun on my shoulders. In my mind’s eye, I am neither here or truly there. Lost in my imagination of ever green fields and bright blue flowing streams. A place where I am free from all that ails me during my waking hours. Beauty, peace and perfection surround me; embraces me and washes through me. How I yearn to be there always.
Joshua Gorissen I started writing poetry last year around April and have written about two a week since then. I have 119 so far and I don’t feel as if I’m out if ideas yet. ARTINZENE / Issue #2

My Soul Sister Dionne
by Michelle Ward
I am sitting on a plane as I write, travelling deep into the night All of my heart goes to one special girl. A magical being through and through The best friend a girl can have, what an adventure we did share. From diving in Fiji, partying all night and travelling in NZ You are such a shining star. I remember how our paths crossed So many moons ago at a party upstairs in little Old K Road. You always remembered my purple hippy top An instant spark between us and we were friends for life. It just felt right. You have been there for me through thick and thin So many laughs together and a tear or two You always knew how to light up a room Your dazzling smile and smooth aplomb Your gracious gift of positive vibes Always there to have a FABULOUS time. We have shared some amazing memories Diving into the deep blue sea in Fiji, Sharks, Night Dives and Photography And maybe some kava in the evening too. Travelling around the South Island was sensational What an epic journey to get to the gathering. Back in the days at the very beginning. My heart overflows with love for you I cherish the love we have You have my deepest care You are protected that is for sure Looked after and loved forever more. You brought the most gorgeous being onto this earth. Samuel is a testament to the adorable you and Kris. I am so blessed to call you my friend, Its an honour a gift I hold precious deep within. I thank you my darling dearest friend Im so grateful to have known you. 82
