From the Executive Officer Welcome to 2014. January has slipped away all too easily – or maybe it melted, given the hot weather that dominated the month. So now as we head into February the year is getting fully underway. We’re looking forward to the year at Arts OutWest as we have a number of things planned. The website is currently being worked on for an upgrade, this newsletter is also in the process of being re-vamped and our staff members are of full of ideas about how to make the year productive for everyone. Our Board is also undergoing some training and up-skilling with a development day coming up with one of Australia’s leading experts in governance and management, David Fishel from Positive Solutions who wrote the invaluable Book of the Board. We are planning a series of events throughout the region during 2014: some networking events, media training, grant writing workshops, a regional gathering in Condobolin for our AGM, some events to support our new donations program and hopefully a small conference or symposium. We’re looking at developing a new project for the region called The Portfolio Program in which we will work with arts practitioners from all artforms to develop their work portfolios to promote themselves. While we still have a number of projects being delivered in the areas of arts and health and in Aboriginal arts development, I’m also looking forward to getting out and about in the region more frequently this year – one of them most enjoyable aspects of my job. We’re very open to ideas from our arts communities about the support and events that are most needed, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like to discuss any possibilities. Making the ‘Forbes Finest’ hip hop track The song and film clip ‘Forbes Finest’ is crammed with issues and messages and some bleak realities; but also speaks of the aspirations of the young participants. The clip was made by Desert Pea Media as part of Arts OutWest’s Spread the Word Aboriginal arts and health project. Aboriginal filmmaker David Towney also followed the process with his video camera. 13 new CASP projects for the region
The NSW government has announced $18,941 in small projects funding to the Central West region through the Country Arts Support Program (CASP). Across the Central West region there were 22 applicants requesting around $42,000 in funds from the 2014 program – double the number of applicants and nearly twice the funds requested by the community last year. 13 applications from the Central West region were successful in the 2014 round, with projects spread across the region. CASP is a key regional arts funding program for NSW which provides support to employ artists in locally initiated arts and cultural projects. The aim is to provide access to arts activities for small communities, to encourage communities to work together on cultural projects, to foster cultural diversity in the region and to ensure that regional and rural areas have an artistic voice. Projects to be funded include: • Public art activities in Bathurst and Carcoar • Community music making workshops and performances in Canowindra, Forbes, Bathurst and Orange • Artistic workshops in quilting (Quandialla), sculpture welding (Oberon), water colour painting (Lake Cargelligo), photography (Trundle) and life drawing (Condobolin) • A project that weaves visual arts with local history in Cowra • Support for local musicians in the Macquarie Philhamonia’s 2014 season “These 13 projects offer exciting new opportunities to communities, arts makers and audiences in the region. They also offer employment opportunities to local artists and arts workers,” Arts OutWest Executive Officer Tracey Callinan said. “Whilst the Central West region had a bumper year for applications, the success rate for this program is still relatively high compared to other funding sources. This is a program we really encourage people to consider for the future,” Tracey said. The grant applications can be for up to $3000. The grants program is coordinated locally by Arts OutWest with funds distributed by Regional Arts NSW. Any incorporated, non-for-profit group can apply.

Robot warriors from Parkes’ Big Box Battle in 2013
Time-travel, Godzillaversus-robot battles, zombies and now... the region’s first comics fest Dr Matt Finch has been a Reader in Residence at Parkes High School and Parkes Shire Library since mid last year, running a farfrom-ordinary literary program. In December, Parkes High students worked with Matt to create book trailers in a joint project with Parkes TAFE. The summer holidays kicked off with a sequel to September’s Godzilla battles at Parkes Shire Library. The UK literary expert has also been working with the popular Parkes Writers Group and together with Tracie Mauro and the team at Parkes Shire Library, has been making literary and education links with a range of other groups and opportunities in the wider region. Recent fun has included a scheme to create new, linked comic collections in Parkes High School and the Parkes Shire Library, in advance of a big comics event planned for February. Starting February 10, students from Year 7 and 8 will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the creative storytelling process for a whole week. Comic creator Pat Grant will visit the school facilitating writing and drawing workshops, taking the time to also talk to older english and art students. On Saturday 15 February Parkes Library will also be offering a comics workshop with Pat Grant for over 14s - adults welcome. Kings Comics will be visiting on the day and catering for those wishing to purchase. This is the first time the library has hosted a comics event it’s hoped it won’t be the last. Enthusiasts from all over the Central West region are invited to attend. Matt Finch is in the region until April. The workshops are FREE. Crowd funding to support Cowra community performance The Cowra- Canowindra Arts Project are crowdfunding to present a concert ‘Namae’ at the Japanese War Cemetery on March 9. The project will bring artists Weizen Ho and Alan Schacher to perform with local musician Shigeki Sano and youth performers Lauren Townsend, Jessica Harris, Bonnie Keys, Brianna Hindmarch and Bianca Riggio at the Japanese War Cemetery as part of the Festival of International Understanding. This performance is the end result of workshops held in 2013. The workshop part of the project was funded by Arts NSW. The team are using the crowdfunding platform Pozible to get the final funds to put on the community performance and only need a few dollars more to make it happen. Other activities organised as part of the project include the exhibition ‘Evidence: The fate of an Okinawan emigrant in New Caledonia, interned in Hay, buried in Cowra’ at Cowra Japanese Gardens; and ‘Gamalan Man’, a shadow puppet theatre show in collaboration with Cowra Musical & Dramatic Society, Jumaadi and Cowra artists and musicians (Thursday 6 March, Cowra Civic Theatre). OAM for services to the community through the Arts Mr Courtney Robert Hawke of Orange received an OAM Order of Australia General Division in the Australia Day awards for service to the community of Orange, particularly through a range of arts organisations. Mr Hawke was a founder member, Orange Arts Foundation, since 1986. A founding member, Orange Regional Gallery, since 1986. Board Director, Orange Festival of Arts, 1983; Member, since 1965. Joint initiator, Orange F.O.O.D Week, since 1991 and is a current member, Orange Museum Working Party. Mr Hawke wrote the submission for a proposed sculpture to be located at the Orange Botanical Gardens, 2000; was a co-organiser, arts program for Western Area Health Care Centre and a member of Raffins Gallery, 1970-1980.

Familiar faces, new directors for both Orange and Mitchell Conservatoriums
There’s been a changing of the guard, but not of the faces, at the region’s two conservatoriums of music. Orange Regional Conservatorium has officially appointed Donna Riles to the position of Music Director, a role she has been acting in for 12 months since the departure of Graham Sattler after his 11 years at the helm. “Donna was an outstanding applicant and she will play an enormous part in ensuring the ORC will continue to be one of the leading conservatoriums in NSW,” said Chairman of the Orange Regional Conservatorium, Russell Turner. “Donna has over 30 years of experience in teaching music and I am confident that in her new role as Music Director of the ORC she will pass on her enthusiasm and experience to all our valued teachers as well as our wonderful students,” Mr Turner said. Meanwhile at Mitchell Conservatorium (which has branches in Bathurst, Lithgow and Forbes) Fiona Thompson has retired as Director after 9 years in the role. Fiona has already filled her ‘retirement’ schedule with more teaching, community committees and music. Graham Sattler was appointed the new director of Mitchell Conservatorium at the end of 2013 and began in January. Graham Sattler also brings a wealth of experience to the role. “My commitment ... is to build on the terrific education and performance programs, and community partnerships... developed [at Mitchell Con] over the last 35 years... support students, staff and the broader Mitchell Con community... and offer exciting broad-range opportunities to our community,” Graham Sattler said. Lithgow’s Small Arms Factory Museum on the lookout for ‘foreign’ objects The Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum shared a month-long display in Penrith Library for January. The display included some of the commercial work and foreign orders - those items made 'unofficially' by Factory employees and smuggled out past the guards, normally at risk of losing their job if they were caught. The items on show ranged from jewellery, an ink stand, and models such as a sub-miniature cannon and spitfire plane to paint stirrers made from bayonets. The museum is always on the lookout for 'foreigners' to either add to their collection or to photograph in cases where the owner wishes to keep them. Obviously there are no official records (apart from when somebody got caught) of this important part of the Factory's story. More about the museum: www.lithgowsafmuseum.org.au/

Bathurst produced theatre, first Mardi Gras OUTPOST event A new verbatim theatre work, The Death of Kings by Bathurst writer Colette F Keen, will be staged at The Hub in Bathurst (February 21) as part of the first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras OUTPOST program, the festival’s new schedule of regional satellite events. Mardi Gras is reaching out to regional communities to create a greater sense of inclusion in the Sydney celebrations. The show will also have a season at Ginger’s at the Oxford Hotel in Sydney. Built on interviews that took place in 2012, The Death of Kings is a cabaret style performance of verbatim theatre that relives Sydney in the early 80s during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Drawing on both laughter and tears the show focuses on the experiences of gay men and the response to the epidemic by the gay community. Writer Colette F Keen, director Adam Deusien, dramaturg Fiona Green and technical creative Becky Russel, are all Bathurst residents and key artists on the project. “As regionally based artists, it’s important for us to perform our work in the community that sustains us,” says Adam Deusien, “Being part of the OUTPOST program allows us to connect our community directly with Mardi Gras, and extend the celebration beyond the city.” The performance has also received support from Positive Life NSW, a non-profit community organisation that works to promote a positive image of people living with and affected by HIV, and Local Stages at BMEC.

New Banjo museum Banjo Paterson …More than a Poet is the name of the wonderful new Museum/Exhibition based around the life and times of the great Australian poet and storyteller A B ‘Banjo’ Paterson. Open every day from 9am till 3pm, this exhibition aims to tell the story of this remarkable Australian through writings and associated memorabilia. Andrew Barton Paterson was born in Orange and then after the birth the family returned to the family run “Buckinbah” at Yeoval where young ‘Barty’ spent his childhood years. Handwritten letters, unpublished poems, photos, stories, editorials, as well as memorabilia of the era are all woven together to give a very interesting, informative and historical display. The museum, set up by Alf and Sharon Cantrell, is at the Wellington end of the Yeoval village, opposite the Banjo Paterson Bush Park. It sits on ground where Banjo, as a small boy, would have sat for days whilst shepherding his father’s sheep on the Buckinbah run and on country he described in his memoirs as ‘dingo infested wasteland’. The museum includes a cafe, toliets and play area. It will be officially opened on Banjo’s 150th birthday, Monday February 17. WANT MORE LOCAL NEWS? The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Board has announced that former ALIA President, Jan Richards, has been conferred with the honour of ALIA fellow. Jan is currently the Chair of the ALIA Public Libraries Advisory Committee, a member of the IFLA standing Committee on Public Libraries, a member of the Library Council of NSW and Manager of Central West Libraries. This achievement recognises Jan’s exceptional contribution to the Australian public library sector throughout her career.
Congratulations and best wishes to all the Central West nominees in the CAT (Canberra Area Theatre) Awards 2013. The Gala Awards Night will be held on Saturday 22 February 2014 at The Llewellyn Hall, ANU Canberra. One Farm Day blog wins social media award An outstanding project by the Central West Writers’ Centre, Central West Libraries, Department of Primary Industries and the National Year of Reading team has been recognised with a 2013 NSW Public Libraries Marketing Award. The One Farm Day blog was awarded highly commended for the partnership allowing agricultural communities to tell their stories. Writer-in-residence Sophie Hansen visited 10 rural sites throughout the Central West, interviewed farmers and uploaded their stories to a dedicated blog: http://onefarmday.blogspot.com.au/ It was part of a nationwide campaign by Australian libraries, library associations, writing centres and workplaces to improve literacy skills.

The Portland Art Exhibition has been a major event on Portland’s calendar for the last 37 years. The not for profit Portland Art Purchase Society works hard to ensure the exhibition showcases the work of many talented artists from within the local region. All works exhibited will be for sale. In prior years, any money raised from art sales has been distributed back into the local community. The Society takes great pride in the fact that a large number of local schools and organisations have benefited from the Art Exhibition over the years. Typically, the Portland Art Exhibition includes the work of over 100 local and well known Australian artists who submit more than 400 works of art. First Saturday and Sunday of month, 10am – 2.30pm Since Orange City Council purchased the Wentworth Main Mine site it has implemented a program of works to conserve the buildings and the iconic poppet head, create pathways, install electricity to all buildings, make the site safe for visitor access and develop an exhibition that tells the story of Wentworth Main Mine. The Wentworth or Lucknow goldfield (as it was known) was discovered in 1851 and became one of the richest in NSW. Lucknow was a thriving mining village among a network of mine shafts and mullock heaps. The Wentworth Main Mine reveals more than 100 years of history, it is remarkably intact and a prominent landmark in Lucknow. $2 adults/ children, students and pensioners are free. March 6-9 Civilian Internment in Australia during WWII: history, memories and community heritage. This international symposium will be held during Cowra's annual Festival of International Understanding. About 200 graves of the Japanese internees who died during the Pacific War are now located in the Cowra Japanese Cemetery. Participants will learn about civilian internment in Australia during WWII - a lesser-known part of Australian history. It will be of interest to both researchers and non-researchers, as well as former internees and their families who will share their life stories. Historians, creative writers, artists and members of the local community where internment camps were built will tell us how they have maintained and developed the legacy of the wartime camps as part of their community heritage. Exhibition 23-25 May, Dunedoo Central School Hall, DUNEDOO Art Unlimited, Dunedoo’s annual art competition and exhibition, one of regional Australia’s leading art competitions with artists, photographers and ceramicists vying for prize money in excess of $11,000, and hundreds of art lovers attending the opening night and weekend exhibition. Regional Arts Australia Summit 2014: Arts + Edges WHEN: 16-19 Oct 2014 WHERE: Kalgoorlie Boulder, WA The Summit will share the experience of desert life through stimulating content, networking, artistic programs and inspiring talks. An exciting fourday program with boutique elements will showcase the unique cultures of Western Australia’s GoldfieldsEsperance region to national and international visitors. Become a part of the Summit by presenting work in one of seven categories. Apply for one, some or all – it’s up to you. Both individual artists and groups can present work at the Summit, the process will require you to complete a form online. Orange Buskers given poetic licence
There is a call out for buskers of all kinds to put themselves forward for the February 2014 Banjo Paterson Festival in orange (the Slow Summer Festival and celebrates Banjo’s 150th birthday). Busking will take place at the festival between February 7 and 17. Two Orange-area writers have taken on the most popular genres with their new novels. Jennifer Rae has cracked the highly lucrative romance market with her debut novel. Rae becomes the latest Australian author to be picked up by the world’s leading romance publishers, Harlequin Mills and Boon. Her novel was picked up by the publishing juggernaut within a week of her submitting. C.S Boag describes his lead character, Mr Rainbow, as “a retro private eye in a contemporary Australia”.
