So was it all worth it? And why did we do it? In the lead up to setting up this project, it had been increasingly clear that there are many professional arts practitioners working in our region needing opportunities to develop and build their practice and to become better established and recognised for their work. Regional artists can feel isolated and often lack the opportunities for career development and networking or recognition that may seem more accessible to their metropolitan based counterparts. The UK exchange program offered an international experience of showing work, collaborating with arts practitioners from a different part of the world and the chance to experience arts practice in another inland predominantly rural area, in order to address some of the issues of access and opportunity for regional practitioners. The exchange was organised in such a way that the practitioners experienced a chance to showcase their work through either exhibition or performance. They were all given the opportunity to collaborate with UK based artists. The participating Australian arts practitioners were all required to deliver a workshop and were given numerous opportunities to experience UK arts and interact with the arts community. Having this international experience as part of their CV will be an asset. The project also demonstrated the benefits of presenting work in a different context as a way of gaining more skills and understanding of one’s own practice. I was proud of what we were able to take to the UK and felt that our own regional arts practice stood up very well on an international platform. The Australian Pavilion, which housed our exhibition for the Wirksworth Festival, demonstrated a good level of quality, our performance double bill compared favourably with anything else I saw while in the UK, and the Australian party that we hosted with the Derbyshire Eco Centre as part of the festival was a great success. We were able to build some valuable partnerships for the future and felt that everyone involved in the process benefitted from the experience and gained professional development that they can bring back to their regional practice in Australia. Arts OutWest News: The Australian Pavilion in the UK A dozen Central West artists spent September in Derbyshire UK for Arts OutWest's first international cultural exchange. The team of arts practitioners from our region set up ‘The Australian Pavilion‘ at Wirksworth Festival, taking over the Derbyshire Eco Centre, putting artwork on the popular Art and Architecture Trail and hosting a theatre double bill in the rural town in the middle of England. Throughout the visit artists also ran workshops and involved themselves in local activities. Covering sculpture, painting, weaving, digital arts, music, drama, dance and writing, the diverse group of artists explored and showcased their work in another regional setting. As the artists return they are reflecting on how their experiences will transfer to our local Australian setting and how their time in the UK has influenced their professional practice and careers. Connecting and connections The project focused on expanding the horizons of regional artists, providing new markets and connections and building skills in collaboration. It was also about learning from artists from another place and about exploring what the whole ‘regional Australian artist’ tag actually means. Cowra sculptor Ken Hutchinson arrived in Wirksworth first and teamed up with National Trust stone carver Richard Hickton and together they produced beautiful and thought provoking new sculptures for our hosts the Derbyshire Eco Centre. Alison Plevey and Adam Deusien from Bathurst physical theatre company Lingua Franca made great connections with Derby Dance (Deda) and Oberon sculptor Harrie Fasher has lined up metalwork studio space for herself in Derbyshire and plans to return to the UK to make use of it in 2014. Lanny McKenzie learnt new techniques in weaving and in using natural dyes, artist Nyree Reynolds developed a new template for incorporating Aboriginal cultural work into her painting workshops and Kim Deacon collaborated with musicians and Derbyshire’s poet laureate. Aboriginal artists Aleshia and Tony Lonsdale were able to compare their own connection to country with some of the ancient traditions in the English countryside and link to the sustainability work of the Derbyshire Eco Centre while Christine Sweeney used her skills in digital storytelling to reach a new audience of young people. Forbes participant, writer and festival creator Merrill Findlay, used the experience to investigate commonalities of rural festivals and document some of the processes and practicalities of Wirksworth Festival. She’ll use these to help further develop the Kalari Lachlan River Arts Festival and has started an excellent blog on rural festivals (http://ruralartsfestivals.wordpress.com/).
Future partnerships with the UK One of the most exciting things to come out of being in Derbyshire was the development of new partnerships between Arts OutWest and UK based arts organisations. First Movement are a Derbyshire based organisation working in disability arts. First Movement's Level Centre is the National Centre for Digital Arts Installation with Learning Disabled People. Their new project ‘raise’ will

be an international collaboration combining technology and performance, working with people with disability. Arts OutWest has been invited to be one of the international partners of the trial / development of the project, alongside organisations in Poland and Spain and will work with one of First Movement’s artists in a project in Bathurst this October. Derby Theatre, which is both a performance space and a training centre now linked to the University of Derby, has offered studio space and accommodation for Central West based performance artists. Arts OutWest’s Arts and Health Coordinator Christine McMillan introduced belly casting to Derbyshire with great success, working with teenage pregnant mothers who are in the care system. The Derbyshire team plan to continue this work. Arts OutWest, Derbyshire County Council and Wirksworth Festival are very keen to continue the ongoing relationship. Options for future exchanges are being explored. Thank you to... Derbyshire County Council, especially Kim Johnson, Derbyshire Eco Centre, especially Cathy Cooke and her staff, and the Wirksworth Festival, in particular Wendy Johnson and Naomi Wilds. Thank you to all the UK artists who took part. Thank you both Chris Webb and Adam Robertson who their superb photos and videos of the project (many of which can be seen on the PavilionProject.com website). This is, of course, a very brief recap of just elements of what was an enormous project for Arts OutWest. For much more head to the project website.

Post it in Parkes
Parkes Shire Council's Tourism team has launched an interactive social media campaign called 'Post it in Parkes' to directly engage with visitors and find out what they love about the Parkes region. The campaign is centred around the development of the new Parkes Shire Visitor Guide and generating real, 'in the moment' images of visitors enjoying all the attractions and experiences that Parkes Shire has to offer. During the month of October, people are invited to post a picture of themselves at their favourite attraction, activity or event on the Parkes Shire Tourism Facebook Page with the hash tag #postitinparkes. The pictures will be judged and the best image will feature in the 2014/15 Visitor Guide which is a key marketing tool for promoting Parkes Shire as a tourist destination. The 'Post it in Parkes' campaign will provide insight into what the visitor sees as unique, quality tourism experiences. The winning image will be announced on the 31 October 2013.

Metal artist Phil Spark with Lithgow City Mayor Cr Maree Stratham
Lithgow history avenue sculptures Lithgow City Council has unveiled new sculptural works at the Lithgow History Avenue. The sculptures which line Inch St, Lithgow tell the story of the history of Lithgow and its importance in the story of the nation. Funded with support of Glencore Coal, they spread along an area that has been referred to as the cradle of industry in Australia. Metal artist Phil Spark, who created the 'Love Seats' at the front of Eskbank House (pictured above), was project designer. He invited other artists, largely blacksmiths, who were involved in the Lithgow Ironfest, to contribute to the designs. Fourteen people were involved in making the twenty two sculptures. “The industrial history of Lithgow and the steel works is a European story and so whilst acknowledging indigenous presence, I decided to start the time line with the European crossing of the mountains in 1813 and end with the closing of the blast furnace in 1929,” Phil Spark said. “I also wanted to develop a unifying style for the various bits of the work.” The Lithgow History Avenue project also includes a supporting website, www.lithgow.com/historyavenue which includes a host of interesting information and links related to the history of Lithgow.

Cowra’s tree ‘Jacket’ with Pam and Valto Heikkinen and Gwen Clark. The Cowra Art Group members have taken down the knitted ‘Jacket’ that has graced the tree outside the Cowra Regional Art Gallery in Darling Street. It went up to coincide with the Alice Springs Beanie Festival exhibition. The Gallery ran a ‘guess the weight of the jacket’ competition on behalf of the Art Group with the proceeds of the competition to be donated to the Friends of the Gallery. The weight of the Jacket - complete with pom-poms and belt - was found, after careful weighing and re-weighing, to be 4.9 kg. When all the entries were checked, the winners were Ronan and Hayden Gailey.
