YOUR FEEDBACK We want you to receive the best service. Please forward comments.
From the Executive Officer As this is the last issue of Artspeak for 2013 it seems appropriate to reflect on the year and to start looking to 2014. Throughout 2013 we have taken on some large projects: our disability project “Sweet Dreams”, our Aboriginal arts and health project “Spread the Word” and our UK exchange project with Derbyshire, not to mention the numerous smaller events we have organised and the everyday core business we deliver. In 2014 we are not planning so many big projects and intend to focus the year on re-vamping some of our core services. We will be refreshing some of our communication and media tools, building on our professional development services for arts practitioners and working directly with some of our artists to develop their portfolios. We are aiming in 2014 to work more at grassroots level to ensure that Arts OutWest continues to deliver on our mission statement to promote, facilitate, educate and advocate for the arts and cultural development. Increasingly it is important for arts organisations to work alongside other sectors in the community, so Arts OutWest will also be using 2014 to be proactive in connecting our arts and culture program to other areas. We know that the arts can play a transformational role when linked with sectors such as health, education, corrections or the environment. We also aim to continue the support we give for developing arts and cultural businesses. I believe that regional centres need the input of successful creative enterprises as part of being healthy thriving places to live and work. At the same time, it is important that we don’t lose sight of the value that ‘art for art’s sake’ can bring to our communities and the way they contribute to our quality of life. Tracey Callinan, executive officer, Arts OutWest

What’s Zoe up to?
The 2014 round of the Country Arts Support Program has not, at time of printing, been announced by the state government. For those who applied, please keep an eye on your inboxes and letter boxes for a personal annoucement. We will annouce the full Central West list to our email subscribers, on our website and on facebook when it is made public.
Our young people’s project officer Zoe Rodwell has been out and about around the region lately, dropping in to visit and support youth arts events. She’s been in Forbes, Cowra and Bathurst in the last few weeks. She has also been collecting photos, videos and other art for our regional showcase of youth arts, our very cool www.yaow.com.au website. She’d love to come and visit your youth arts event, provide advice and support and help document it. If you have something planned, need some contacts or just want to catch up, get in touch: zrodwell@yahoo.com.au or on the phone 02 6338 6586 or leave her a message through our youth facebok page: www.facebook.com/yaow.youth Zoe works 10 hours a week.

Aleshia in Wesfarmers Arts Indigenous Leadership Program Our fantastic Aboriginal Arts Development Officer, Aleshia Lonsdale, spent 10 days in Canberra in November as a selected participant in the highly competitive Wesfarmers Arts Indigenous Leadership Program. Aleshia is one of ten aboriginal arts professionals from around Australia who took part in the program at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA). Cara Kirkwood, Indigenous Program Coordinator at the National Gallery, said, “We’re really proud of this program and many of our Alumni have gone onto other national and international professional opportunities.” The Mudgee based Wiradjuri artist has worked on our Aboriginal arts development program since 2010. Aleshia got a behind the scenes look at the NGA - who boast the largest display of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in the world - and met a host of respected arts industry people like Franchesca Cubillo, Senior Curator Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art at the NGA; Contemporary Indigenous Artist, Fiona Foley; Tess Allas, Indigenous Editor at DAAO (Design & Art Australia Online) and Associate Lecturer in the School of Art History & Art Education at COFA and Djon Mundine, Leading Independent Indigenous Curator and Art Historian. The Aboriginal Arts Development Officer position at Arts OutWest is funded by the federal government’s Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) and ICS (Indigenous Cultural Support) programs of the Office of the Arts (Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet).

Like it? This new sculpture - Philip Spelman’s Red Jarred Bottle - will make it’s home outside Bathurst Regional Art Gallery in 2014. It was selected from the 2013 Sculpture By The Sea exhibition in Bondi and purchased with a special $20,000 state government grant and $15,000 from the gallery’s art purchasing fund. The announcement of the sculpture’s selection certainly got Bathurst talking - the comments pages of the Western Advocate bursting with opinions. Image: Philip Spelman’s Red Jarred Bottle. Passing by the tree, the skin of memory: Nathalie Hartog Gautier
To 5 January 2014 “This body of work is about my aunt who suffers from Dementia. She remembers very little of the past and to visit her is like entering another world. I wanted to remember our time together. When I see her or think of her I attach images which, to use Proust’s expression, ‘will break the spell’”.

17 December - 26 January Grenfell Art Gallery, Main Street GRENFELL Darren Cooper. Darren was born at West Wyalong in Wiradjuri country in 1970. His career as an artist has taken him to Austria commissioned by Swarovski to showcase Aboriginal art and culture alongside such greats as Ken Done, Salvador Dali and Brian Eno. Locally, his work has been commissioned by the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council for the 1999-2000 State election campaign and, the 2000 and 2004 Aboriginal Health Workers Journal. Darren describes himself as a contemporary Aboriginal artist who style is contemporary modern, mixed with traditional elements with a technique in that he utilises modern methods to enhance the traditional themes addressed in all of his artworks. “My art is something I can share with others. It gives me a means of keeping the Aboriginal tradition of story-telling alvie and I am proud to be a part of that. Most of all art has helped me reconnect with my Aboriginal identity and helped me find security in being able to recognise the traditional lifestyles of my people.” His art is extraordinary.
