Arts OutWest News UPDATES
From the Executive Officer In the midst of a busy time for funding programs, we’ve also been hectic with our planning for the UK trip that is coming up. I am delighted to have been able to develop this opportunity in partnership with our Derbyshire partners. Before coming back to Australia at the end of 2008, I lived in Wirksworth in Derbyshire for four years, where our artists will be based this September. During my four years I learnt so much about arts management, both through being employed by Arts Council England on the Creative Partnerships program, and through my volunteer work on Wirksworth Festival. I’m looking forward to being able to share this with our participating artists. I’m sure our Central West artists heading over to the UK will also learn a lot from their contact with the arts sector there. But we also have a lot to share about the things we have learnt here in regional Australia from developing arts practice in often challenging circumstances. We also look forward to telling the stories of the Central West and getting people to know more about our part of the world as well our region’s arts practice that often reflects our location. The Derbyshire people have brought together a great group of their local artists, so I’m sure it will be exciting to see how the collaborations will progress and what is produced. This has not been an easy venture to fund. Many arts funding programs do not give grants for overseas projects, and many of the artists we are taking are considered emerging rather than established. However I have always felt that the potential benefits both to the participating artists and to our region make it worthwhile. Tracey Callinan, Executive Officer

Arts OutWest News EXPORTING OUR CREATIVE PRODUCT
Local artists take on the UK
At the end of August a team of artists from the Central West will head to the UK to share work at the Wirksworth Festival in Derbyshire, taking over the Derbyshire Eco Centre for a two week showcase of Australian arts and culture. The focus of the project is to showcase the unexpected variety of contemporary art coming out of regional Australia and expose regional artists to an international market. In partnership with Derbyshire County Council, and under the banner of ‘The Australian Pavilion’, visual artists Lanny McKenzie (a weaver) and Harrie Fasher (sculptor) will exhibit their work in front of an audience of thousands. They’ll join Nyree Reynolds (painter), Ken Hutchinson (sculptor), Christine Sweeney (digital media) with Arts OutWest’s Christine McMillan and Aleshia Lonsdale (both in their capacities as visual artists) in running collaborative workshops with Wirksworth locals. Theatre maker and designer Becky Russell will send multimedia work to be shown at the Eco Centre. Arts OutWest has also been invited to present a theatre double bill for the festival. Performer Kim Deacon (harpist and singer) will take her show about the women in Henry Lawson’s life. This will be staged alongside Lingua Franca’s ‘Right Behind You’ (performed by Adam Deusien and Alison Plevey) which will head to the UK after their Australian season at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre. The Wirksworth Festival runs 6-22 September. www.wirksworthfestival.co.uk Follow the project, including background, dates and details, at: http://pavilionproject.com

SPREAD THE WORD PROJECT
Health through hip hop Diet, disease and positive media messages are themes in a new hip hop song and film clip produced by Desert Pea Media, starring young people in Orange. It’s part of Arts OutWest’s federally funded ‘Spread the Word’ Aboriginal arts and health project. DPM also ran a hip hop and film project in Forbes (video out soon) and in Condobolin, producing the clip ‘Who I Am’ with The Condo Crew and Roy Peterson. See the Orange film clip at: http://youtu.be/AVGABWEAaj4 or look for it on the Desert Pea Media you-tube channel. This Local Community Campaign was developed with funding from the Australian Government through the Department of Health and Ageing. Focus on: Arts Marketing Nourishing food for thought for those trying to woo audiences to arts events Back in May our Communications Officer Maryanne went to Canberra for the Australia Council for the Arts’ annual Arts Marketing Summit. Two days of case studies and conversations sprouted lots of ideas to mull over, and a few to hopefully implement in due course. Most of the Summit is now available as videos and slide shows. Follow the link on this page and take a look. Does anything grab you as a great idea that could work for you locally? What burning questions or needs do you have around arts marketing? Feel free to share your stories, successful tactics and thoughts and continue the conversation on our www.facebook.com/artsoutwest page.
Jane uses ArtStart Orange-based visual artist Jane Tonks has spent the last year making the most of her federal ArtStart grant for emerging artists. As a recipient of an ArtStart: Career Kickstarts for Arts Graduates grant, Jane has just launched a new website all about her work and experiences as an artist. Wondering how to write an artist statement? How to list your exhibitions in a CV? How to display and explain your work? Jane’s site is a really good example - and her ‘art hire’ scheme is a clever way of marketing her work too. Jane’s site: www.janetonks.com.au More about the ArtStart program: artstartgrant.com.au

Local Arts News Cowra Vocal Ensemble: 20 years in song and looking to the next generation The Cowra Vocal Ensemble has been celebrating 20 years of song with a series of concerts. Whilst looking back on some of their favourite tunes they’re also looking forward to the next generation by raising funds for a local musical scholarship. The ensemble started twenty years ago when some of the members of Cowra’s Musical and Dramatic Society were looking for a way to keep singing between productions. Lawrance Ryan and Janet Battle got a group together and they had their first public performance at the Musical and Dramatic Society’s Broadway Ball in April 1993, with Janet battle as director. A mixed voice choir of around 15-20 members, now under the musical direction of Maree McKay, they have a fairly eclectic repertoire - songs from musical theatre and to a smaller degree the lighter classical repertoire, movie themes, popular songs - old and new - and some folk songs. Through the concerts the ensemble hopes to raise a pool of funds towards a scholarship for a young resident to assist their development as a vocalist or accompanist. The first concert raised $285 towards the scholarship and it’s hoped the second and third shows will significantly add to that. “Every lesson, course, master class or workshop is expensive enough but our young people usually have to travel to them and pay for accommodation as well. It is no hardship to us to help out a young student while doing something we love and our audience is happy too because they are being entertained,” Ms Braithwaite said. The first two concerts was held June 30 and July 28 at the Cowra Civic Centre. The final will be held Saturday August 31 as an evening Gala Performance. There will be food and wine included in ticket price. Prebooking essential. 02 6345 3515. This story first appeared in Arts Sunday July 7, 2013

Bundaburrah Music grows After more than 50 years of trading in Forbes, Bundaburrah Aboriginal Art Company - or Bundaburrah Music as it is known by many throughout the region - is opening a second music store in Parkes. Facing the challenges all music stores are looking at, as the music industry continues to change, Managing Director Wally Biles has made the decision to expand instead of sell. "People need a local music shop and we will continue to provide that service," he said. Bundaburrah Music will be opening the second store within the next month and there are plans for the store in Forbes to be more than just a one-stop music shop. The Parkes store however will encompass all things music. "Like all retailers who have struggled in country towns recently we have decided to diversify the business to encompass all things art which includes music and musical instruments and we will also have a stronger online focus," said Wally. Bundaburrah Music will be in Parkes from early August in the old Country Energy building on the corner of Church Street and Clarinda Street. SHARE YOUR NEWS Don’t by shy!
