Mesto Ptuj vsako leto znova postane za mesec in nekaj dni globalno središče in prostor iskanja, odkrivanja in sprejemanja različnih pristopov in tendenc v sodobni umetnosti. For a a little more than a month each year the city of Ptuj becomes a global centre and place of searching, discovering and accepting various approaches and tendencies in contemporary art. In this day and age it is possible to accept and prefer different arts streams, styles and orientations, and Art Stays enables one to do just that. Innovative and daring contemporary visual art projects by accomplished artists, drifting from painting, video, photography, installation, performance, which all find it a challenge to prepare and present new projects in Ptuj. New connections and ideas for the future are forged and created every year, and they are a priceless source of energy for the artists, as well as for the city, which is opening up as the future European capital of culture. We are honoured that we are able to create the most contemporary projects from all around the world in Slovenia's oldest town.
The 8th edition of ART STAYS 2010, dedicated to the relations and differences between art, sound, territory, sciences and technology, consist in a dialogue versus different approaches to all forms of the visual and sound arts. The goal is to interrogate the singularity of the artists and curators ideas and their differences and exhibit them in some particularly places, forms and formats in Ptuj. Through a new view ART STAYS practices a creation, analysis and dialogues of artworks, lectures and workshops; the idea is to promote a platform for understanding the connections between traditional visual arts as painting, architecture or sculptures with new forms and research as video art, performances, installation etc.
It has been 10 years since I have started dedicating my time to contemporary visual art in Ptuj. In 2000 we have started organising exhibitions of important Slovenian artists and brought a fresh wind into a sleeping visual art scene of our city. Three year after we began organising a workshop for young European visual artists that today became one of the biggest and most important festivals of contemporary visual arts in Slovenia and abroad. Every year it brings to Ptuj artists, curators and much audience from all over the world. The exhibition of this year festival, that is open in fifteen diffrent exhibition spaces in Ptuj and nearby is a result of years work and it proves that big cultural projects can happen also outside capital cities.

ZAPLETEN SVET ART STAYS
A COMPLEX WORLD OF ART STAYS
S tem katalogom se Art Stays in njegovi dnevi odpirajo in javnosti razkrivajo intenzivne trenutke skozi besedo in dokumentarno fotografijo, skozi umetnike in prijatelje. Art Stays, poletna akademija in Art Ptuj so v 10 dneh organizirali preko 35 dogodkov s področja sodobne umetnosti, ki vključujejo 15 različnih projektov, 5 nacionalnih paviljonov, 5 mednarodnih posebnih projektov, 5 projektov Art Stays in kopico dogodkov, predavanj, delavnic in srečanj v dneh, ko so na Ptuju gostovali kustosi, umetniki in profesorji z različnih področij umetnosti. Z njimi so potekale debate o vidnih temah sodobne umetnosti.
When the viewer comes to Ptuj to visit the Art Stays exhibitions, he enters a complex world made up of areas, sections, plans, artists and works. Everything has its place just as it is intended. Hard work, ideas, insights, challenges, unexpected, improbable claims, people and artists who meet and discover, mishaps, bad timing, spaces you need to reinvent and time to find ... all this is part of the the past. The busy, imperfect and confused world of Art Stays – this is what this catalogue wants to describe; everything that happened, for those who did not live among us day by day with emotions and passions, but want to understand. Months of work, weeks or only ten days to complete many of the artworks, installations, videos, paintings, photos, events – all specially created for Art Stays. With this catalogue Art Stays opens itself and its individual days, revealing intense moments to the public through its story and documentary photographers, artists and friends. It presents the most exciting and meaningful moments that were a part of the creation of Art Stays 2010. In this way we discover and follow the hectic days of work, when artists and curators came to Ptuj from Australia, USA, Japan, Singapore and 12 European countries to give life, form and space to the leading contemporary art event in Slovenia. Art Stays, Summer Academy and Art Ptuj have promoted and organized over 35 contemporary art events in 10 days for the 2010 edition, including 15 different projects, 5 national pavilions, 5 international special projects, 5 Art Stays projects and a series of events, lectures, workshops and meetings in the days of residence to present curators, artists and teachers of various arts and sections, to discuss with them about the great themes of contemporary art. The result of our work; 50 artists and the group exhibitions presented in 15 public and private spaces of the city that include well over 135 different artworks that have been collected here – with different looks and ways but sharing the same passion and desire to spread the word about how Art Stays is once again a journey, exposed in front of the eyes of the spectators, not focusing on who is the author and organizer, the artists, editors, teachers, friends, critics, journalists, photographers, but by exposing the essence of the project itself.

MEDNARODNA PLATFORMA
INTERNATIONAL PLATFORM
The timing of Art Stays makes it an interesting platform for curatorial exploration: with so many international art institutions searching for public attention, Art Stays remains viable in that one can use it as a sounding board for more experimental projects and as a test bed for emerging arts. Art Stays has given me the possibility to try out new combinations and “installational constellations” – in the context of the festival I have always worked in a cross-disciplinary format; the artists I chose were then installed to create a very new experience: this factor about developing your program through on-site research and enjoying the energy that comes out of a live development is unique to Art Stays and a delightfully fresh platform.

ARTISTIC FIRST AID IN REVIVING THE OLD TOWN CORE / INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Z množico kulturnih dogodkov prinaša v vse preveč zaspano in meščanskega življenja osiromašeno zgodovinsko središče ustvarjalni nemir, novo energijo in znanje. Novo upanje! Razmah nakupovalnih središč ustvarja zapeljivo iluzijo razvitega okolja, kjer prihaja do neharmoničnega povezovanja starih in novih tradicij. Zato smo lahko še toliko bolj vznemirjeni, ko nam kulturno umetniško društvo Art Stays vsaj enkrat letno, a zato toliko bolj silovito, kaže mednarodno kulturno ogledalo v obliki že osmega festivala sodobne umetnosti.
Even though the history of the Art Ptuj festival is young and short, it seems as if the festival has been with us for ages. With a plethora of cultural events it brings creative restlessness, new energy and knowledge into the all too sleepy and impoverished city life of the historical town core. A new hope! It clearly shows a direction in which the city should direct its development in order to become internationally competitive, interesting and recognizable as well as a place where locals and visitors feel good. The massive growth of shopping centres creates a seductive illusion of an urban environment, where old and new traditions connect in a non-harmonious manner. The old town core's living body is decomposing, it is becoming helpless and numb and in desperate need of urgent, fast and effective measures to recharge its redevelopment. It needs knowledge, energy and capital, especially from external sources. It needs a new development paradigm based on internationally comparable potentials, which can also be found in the rich heritage and culture of Slovenia's oldest town. If we connect the concept of heritage with contemporary art and creativity, we are facing the Art & Heritage development model, which is based on the consideration of local traditions and global artistic practice and innovation. After all, the development project European Capital of Culture is a story about Art & Heritage! Without heritage and culture, without tradition and contemporary creativity Ptuj can never become an urban centre with an urban lifestyle. This is why we should be all the more excited when, once a year, Cultural and Arts Society Art Stays hands us an international cultural mirror in the shape of the festival of contemporary visual art. The festival is not only an international parade of the most contemporary and up-to-date artistic practices inspired by the numerous historical details of our city, but also a unique artistic reflection of the understanding and feeling of the town. A reflection, which establishes a creative dialogue between the old and the new – the old, which gives meaning to the new, and the new, which is inspired by the old. Two new chapters in the concept of the festival of contemporary art deserve special mention this year. The first one is the brave and ambitious start of the International Summer Academy of Contemporary Art, which underlines the meaning of knowledge in developing various artistic practices through its lectures and workshops. This kind of academies could enable “Art & Heritage Ptuj” to develop not only into a romantic historical town living and breathing with contemporary art, but also into an internationally acclaimed hub of information and knowledge. The second important new element of the festival is the project Portrait Over Coffee in Park Hotel Ptuj. Accomplished painter Igor Molin was brought in to paint portraits in various techniques at, as the organizers say, affordable festival prices. This fact is a testament of the festival's creators' wish to bring contemporary art closer to people – those who do not visit galleries and perhaps even those who are not really interested in contemporary art. These perhaps seemingly trivial gestures of art being for sale and available to a wider audience create a wide but certainly not trivial dialogue, which enables a critical creative reflection and social responsibility of art of the 21st century. And if we have a good time in the process, life can be – even in Ptuj – almost perfect!

Mehkoba, izmuzljivost, svetloba in percepcija so elementi projekta Ptujing, “site-specific” umetnine oziroma umetnine, prilagojene prizorišču, avtorice Caterine Margherite. The Italian project curated by Domenico Papa consists of a painting installation of 60 small paintings by Antonello Tagliafierro, which presents a new concept of abstraction according to a geographical gestalt of the image. Softness , elusiveness, light, perception are the elements of Ptujing, a site-specific artwork created by Caterina Margherita, consisting of four medium-sized encaustic canvases and steam, inspired by the location and the thermal waters which are present in the city.

Curator Laszlo Laszlo Revesz has chosen two artists to represent contemporary Hungarian art. Eike, who is known for his videos focusing on the duality of space, is presenting here in Ptuj three different artworks (“House of Cards“, „Utopia-The Collection“ and „Utopia“ video) moving between videos, installation and light box, where he is playing with the situation between the real and the virtual. The younger artist György Szaszák's double video „Parallel“ works with a central issue of understanding and researching the interactivity of the spectator.

Dve zanimivi deli znanih figurativnih slikarjev, Španca Jorgeja Villalbe in Nemca Andreasa Lessnerja, ustvarjata dialog v okviru posebne predstavitve projekta Ptuj Unfold avtorice Marion Eichmann, ki vsebuje tri risbe na papirju, narejene s svinčniki, drugimi pisali, tehniko kolaža itd. Kmalu bo zaključeno in predstavljeno tudi veliko delo, posvečeno strukturi mesta, njegovi zgodovini in prebivalcem. Two interesting pieces by well-known figurative painters, Spaniard Jorge Villalba and German Andreas Lessner, conduct a dialogue with a particular project presentation called Ptuj Unfold by Marion Eichmann. There are three drawings on paper made with pencil, pens, collages etc. A large work dedicated and related to the structure of city, its history and its habitants will soon be completed in Ptuj.

Beti Bricelj and Tanja Špenko are two female Slovenian polyedric artists that represent two generations in confrontation for a unique project in Gallery Magistrat, curated by Vladimir Forbici. While abstract style, coloured forms and mathematical rules are the basic elements of Bricelj's research and painting, Špenko's artworks, paintings, prints and sculptures have already assumed a deeper meaning through representations consisting of symbols, signs of man's presence, fragments, traces of a long transformation that is still in process.

INVOLVING THE CITY
We are sure that the public is excited to get to know the new directions in today's contemporary art. Therefore, it is important for us to involve in Ptuj in the festival's events. In doing so, Ptuj positions itself as a contemporary art city, which also accepts avant-garde projects. The role of a contemporary artist is to undertake all challenges and push the language of art to the extreme.

BIOALLOY, Gary Cass & S Chandrasekaran kustos / curator: Marika Vicari

Projekt, ki ga je občinstvo opisalo kot glavni dogodek festivala Art Stays 2010, je novi projekt avstralskega biologa Garyja Cassa in singapurskega umetnika S Chandrasekarana, Bioalloy and the Body. Peristaltic Bodies (Biozlitina in telo. Described by the public as the main event of Art Stays 2010, the new project of Australian biologist Gary Cass and Singaporean artist S Chandrasekaran, Bioalloy and the Body. Peristaltic Bodies, curated by Marika Vicari, probes the diminishing space between humans and machines. The machine allows living bacteria to produce its own skin, a material was created in relation to the human body during the process of the performance. The question of when will machines become human-like is already passé and boring; the more interesting question is, when will humans become machine-like?

Presented during the official opening of the Art Ptuj Festival in the Courtyard of Ptuj's Castle, the project Portrait of Traces by Italian artist Marco Gradi involved the public in the production of an artwork through a seemingly quotidian act of walking on paper coloured and prepared with varnishes. On its surface, the people were participating in a ritual that resulted in the creation of an artwork. After the production of two large black and white pieces, those were exhibited

Cesare Pietroiusti has made 300 unique drawings using two local products: pumpkin oil and pelinkovec. The drawings were individually signed by the artist and distributed for free during a public art performance on 25th July in front of Ptuj's Theatre. A caption at the bottom of each piece states that it only has to be considered an artwork until a certain date. Is it a critical comment of the art market, or is it an attempt to create a paradox in which the traditional concept of "author" with his typical manifestation, such as the signature, or the act of dating an artwork, are used in a different way?

URA DRŽAVLJANSKE VZGOJE / HOMELAND LESSON, Đasper i Đons kustos / curator: Jernej Forbici
Đasper i Đons are present only indirectly, as an expression of artistic actions and are never personally present at openings and events, though they do follow them closely the entire time. The project is alive and ever-growing and always deals with the current political reality/banality, as served by the politics trough the media. Politics is not in the service of the citizens, it is its own purpose and it expresses itself with the help of “politically correct” methods and other tools of reality distortion. The political conscience is dead and the citizen's consciousness intoxicated by its own problems.

SONGSPOT, Lynn Book kustos / curator: Raphael Di Luzio & Jernej Forbici

SongSpot, created by American trans-media artist Lynn Book during her residence in Ptuj, is an interactive performance and site-specific installation that calls forth the threshold nature of the voicing body. After having collected some audio and image artefacts from the city-wide activation accumulated at the SongSpot hub, the artist created a resonant architecture of the sound of living, which was presented in a culminating concert on the day of the openings that featured both solo compositions and collaborative compositions and improvisations with people from Ptuj, who transformed themselves and others through the power of voicing bodies.

Small Histories is an evolving artwork in which the visitor can exchange an item of their own for one of the multiple objects created and displayed by the artist. Each object will be attributed a false history, and in exchange the participant must also attribute their object with a written history attached as a label. These histories can be true or false and used to enhance the status or desirability of the item. Bypassing the monetary value of an item, its value is deemed by the exchange of object for object, and through the exchange of stories and imaginings.

RAZSTAVA / EXHIBITION: THE AREA OF BUSTLE kustos / curator: Manuel Frara

The Area of Bustle NEW MEDIA MADE in ITALY je platforma, ki vključuje 12 umetnikov, povabljenih k raziskovanju izražanju skozi umetnost in iskanju novih interpretacij glavnih orodij novih medijev. Conceived as a single work composed of various elements – single-channel video, sound art and digital painting, glitch art just to name a few types of works that were completed by the artists in residence in Ptuj during Art Stays 2010. The Area of Bustle NEW MEDIA MADE in ITALY is a platform involving 12 artists, who were invited for the particular research expressed through art, reinterpreting some of the main tools of new media. In this sense the exhibition hosted in the space of the Former Prison has built a path in which the viewer is confronted with the totality of the project and the singularity of the work: a unique experience where the point of view repositions itself and begins moving through the exhibition space.

A fraction of the Italian mosaic from Terme di Caracalla in Rome has been reproduced and is now part of the collection of the archaeological area of the Sun Park in the outer Dominican Monastery Courtyard in Ptuj. Making a comparison between the real but different histories of Rome and Ptuj, both Roman cities, Swiss artist Oppy De Bernardo reflects on the importance that sites like thermal baths had during the Roman age and how they have contributed to the development of the city in the last few centuries.

The house of Memory (Hiša spominov) ameriškega umetnika Raphaela Di Luzia je sestavljena iz dveh projektov, nastalih za Art Stays 2010: In My Mind Eye: A House of Memories, velika risba na papirju, ki je postavljena v Galeriji Tenzor, ter veliki “Yurt”, zgrajen iz odpadlih drevesnih vej in drugih naravnih materialov, ki so odmrli in padli na zemljo. Slednji stoji na Slovenskem trgu. Obe deli sta način prikaza kraja, kjer avtorjevi spomini nekaj časa metaforično prebivajo. The house of Memory by American artist Raphael Di Luzio consists of two projects created for Art Stays 2010: In my Mind Eye: A House of Memories, a large charcoal drawing on paper presented at Gallery Tenzor, and a big Yurt, formed with fallen tree branches and other purely natural materials that have died and fallen to the ground, placed in Slovenski trg square. Each of them is a different form of representation of the place of memory, where his memories would metaphorically be housed for a short time.

Interno3 presents to the Italian and international public a capillary phenomenon that is becoming more diffused, in which individuals and partnerships confront themselves within a new interface, working side by side to develop a free and independent form that takes shape by using various media – from the video to the computer, from sound to the use of literature connected with the participating artists' own work. What distinguishes Interno3 is not just the pursuit of new media but mainly the produced mutation of an electronic image as in A Beautiful Day and Skytape #3, the artworks presented at Art Stays 2010.

RAZSTAVA / EXHIBITION: NEW MEDIA EXCHANGE MAIN kustos / curator: Raphael Di Luzio

New media is a wide-ranging term often tied to technology. Perception and interaction is reaction, response, cognition and other kinds of feedback between an individual and a work. Raphael Di Luzio has chosen 11 American artists who use various forms of new media and individually interpret the idea of new media as an expressive tool, a tool of perception, a means to create the transformation of the viewer into a participant in the artwork. New Media Exchange Maine, USA is not a project limited to the use of technology. It must exist in time and allow the viewer to transform from the act of the passive gaze and role of the observer into a relation of heuristic feedback with the piece.

Izhajajoč iz dejstva raznolikosti so dela mednarodnih umetnikov Johanne Klement, Ine Loiztl, Stefana Luciana, Darine Peeva in Tomaža Plavca ustvarila dialog različnih izražanj, kjer je skupni imenovalec čista in natančna, preprosta ali informalna grafična poteza.
